Social Innovation and Sustainable Livelihoods
Venue: Room Z209 / Main Auditorium

Asian
Social innovation
is the process of creating and enacting new ideas to address social issues. People’s
Venture
livelihoods are
constrained by different bundles of local factors: economic, cognitive, normative,
power Philanthropy
and politics. Social innovation attempts to identify and address which of these challenge the
realization of
sustainable livelihoods the most.
Network
Conference 2015
As of late, social innovation has become an ideology- innovation is good, but more innovation is
better. This has lead to the phenomena of innovating for the sake of innovating. Consequently,
innovators sometimes fail to consider productive perspectives on social innovation that facilitate
strategizing, resource allocation, and learning.
Venture Philanthropy
in Practice
This plenary session explores the role of social innovation in addressing the challenge of sustainable
livelihoods, with panellists discussing and debating the following questions:

Collective Impact
Venue: Room Z205

Asian acknowledges that working within our silos limits the impact that we are able
Venture Philanthropy
Venture
to achieve, and
at AVPN, we encourage the community to work across sectors in order to leverage on
Philanthropy
each others’
strengths and resources. In recent times, the concept of collective impact has started to
take off within
the AVPN community. This is where funders and the community work collectively
Network
together to achieve social goals.
Conference 2015
Working towards Collective Impact is complicated and aligning each organisation’s agenda,
measuring and monitoring the impact is also a complex process. For this session, we feature
Collective Impact cases from Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong. They are all at different stages of
developing and executing their programme and will share their challenges and experience.

Key Takeaways
- Why Collective Impact?
- What were the main obstacles and challenges faced by each group?
- What are the main goals that the funders hope to achieve that they cannot achieve by

how does it decide which pressing problem to invest in addressing, among the many facing
Network
our economies, ecosystems, health systems, and communities? How can it make investments that don’t just
‘do some good,’ but are highly-leveraged—actually catalyzing transformation?
Conference 2015
For us, the answer lies in identifying problems that are not just pressing, but also dynamic and ripe for
engagement and innovation. Through a fast-paced, forward-looking workshop, we will immerse participants
in the methods and tools that we use to identify high-leverage opportunities for social impact. Participants
will:
Venture Philanthropy
in Practice
- Identify early signals of change around pressing social, economic, environmental, and health problems
in Asia
- Assess the “ripeness for engagement” of different problems
- Explore future possible global shifts that could affect problems of interest, as well as investments in
addressing them
Programme Book
Participants will leave the workshop with early ideas about new social investments and opportunities for
impact.

KNOWLEDGE SHOWCASE
Dealflow Platform
You've come to the AVPN Annual Conference to get updated on the state of social development
across Asia, connect with partners and learn from peers. Rather than do this once a year or each
time AVPN brings
an event to your country, you'll soon be able to stay plugged in to these
Asian
activities round
the clock!
Venture
Philanthropy
PN
At the core of
increasing collaboration within the social impact sector is the AVPN Deal Flow
Network
Platform and AVPN has launched a beta version in collaboration with early adopters from the
community. This early version of the Deal Flow Platform will allow AVPN members to post
funding or non-financial support requests from the social purpose organisations that they are
supporting. These requests will be publicly accessible to AVPN members and non-members alike.
AVPN's role will be to facilitate information sharing of such funding requests within the
community, but not to function as a broker. Drop by the Knowledge Showcase to preview this
beta version and more importantly, share your feedback on where you see the gaps in the sector
today and where we should focus our efforts!

To connect professional education with societal needs, we have taken the lead to introduce a
