Except with the La Porte Hospital Auxiliary, whose members give so generously of it that time can only mean one thing: the opportunity to transform a life for the better. Whether Auxiliary members are volunteering inside the hospital, hosting a fundraiser or sharing their resources and talents for special projects, one thing remains true: the group embodies the mission of making a positive difference in IU Health La Porte Hospital and our community. 8 • 2013 La Porte Hospital Foundation Annual Report A GLIMPSE AT STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS MADE WITH AUXILIARY PHILANTHROPIC GIFTS Fiber Optic Laryngoscope System $13,000 This highly advanced equipment used in surgery produces magnified high-definition images to aid anesthesiologists while preparing patients for surgery. It’s nice to be a member, to belong. Imagine what good can come when in membership you help transform your own life, your community and even the health and well-being of others. It’s possible even a little at a time. Two La Porte families are proof. Dr. Seth and Rose Philbrook settled in La Porte by accident in the late 1940s and have been charter members of The Foundation since 1978. Craig and Heather Menne made a conscious decision to return to La Porte after launching their careers in another city and have been Foundation members for a few years. Both families are great examples of the rewards that come from giving. The Foundation and IU Health La Porte Hospital are vital stakeholders in making sure we have high quality healthcare. “We are members because it’s a privilege, not because we have to,” said Rose Philbrook from her La Porte home of 56 years. “ Seth and I heard of La Porte when doctors tried to recruit him here during his residency. We were on our way to Ohio, but we thought we would stop in La Porte on the way. Well, the rest is history, as they say.” The Philbrooks were named Honorary Life Members of The Foundation in 2006 — Craig Menne TransformING LIVES THROUGH MEMBERSHIP Vibrant Connections and Lifelong Memberships 10 • 2013 La Porte Hospital Foundation Annual Report The one thing that resonates with our family when we think of IU Health La Porte Hospital and The Foundation is trust... It is through these contributions that they have been able to watch their community grow and become healthier. “La Porte Hospital is a wonderful place, and they do wonderful things. While volunteering at a Foundation fundraiser about 12 years ago, I had a heart attack. You better believe the place Seth took me was (IU Health) La Porte Hospital,” Rose said. “This community is a better place because of the hospital.” Rose said one of the transforming moments for her was watching Holy Family Hospital and Fairview Hospital combine in 1966 to form La Porte Hospital. “We knew something great would come of healthcare in this town, and we wanted to be part of it,” Rose said. Heather Menne knows a little bit about the rich history of this endeavor. Her grandfather, Ben Bortz, led the campaign that raised more than $3.5 million to build a new La Porte Hospital in 1972. “Obviously my grandpa’s work contributes to why we are members of The Foundation, but for us it’s more than that,” Heather said. Her husband, Craig, President of General Insurance Services, said, “It’s about making the community a better place.” “The most elemental part of it is that, having a family, we want to raise them in a community that is vibrant; we know that it’s critical to have a health system with the highest quality of care available for that to happen,” Craig said. “Both of our daughters were born at IU Health La Porte Hospital. While we understand our contributions may be small, we have seen The Foundation grow them,” he said. “There are a wide variety of worthy causes to consider when you want to be connected, but The Foundation is so well run that We are members because it’s a privilege, not because we have to. — Rose Philbrook we feel this is where we need to be to have the most impact in transforming lives,” he said. Our rewards are hearing the wonderful stories of people who have been cared for at the hospital,” Rose said. Membership in The Foundation provides that sense of belonging and connection but also provides the feeling of well-being that comes from doing something good. Heather said she and Craig are proud to raise their daughters in their hometown of La Porte and are also proud to give back to the community through The Foundation. Of her daughters Heather said, “It’s our hope that giving doesn’t become something they do, but part of who they are.” “We are very active in the Methodist Church, so being part of something greater is not new Join us in transforming the health of our community! Today, we recognize this quality in Mrs. Eunice Dahl Wright. Her artistic outlet was understanding the power of an endowment, and her canvas will continue to be La Porte and surrounding communities for years to come. Eunice lived a quiet but remarkable life, helping to transform a local business from humble beginnings to exceptional success. Born in 1924, Eunice lived in La Porte until she married Doane F. Wright, and they lived on their Hanna farm for many years until returning to live in La Porte. Growing up, Eunice and her 2 sisters often shirked the traditional dolls for paper and pen, and she understood at an early age the importance of mathematics and how a dollar could grow. After graduating from high school, Eunice became a part time accountant at the La Porte County Farm Bureau Co-op and retired 50 years later as controller, overseeing 7 satellite offices. After Doane’s passing in 1991 and even in retirement, she stayed on part time to assist with the fine details of the transition. ClubTM program last year as 4th graders, both admitted they were shy and a little apprehensive. Today the young ladies, ages 10 and 11 respectively, are outgoing and quite outspoken about how Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM has helped transform their lives. health and wellness practices and continues throughout the school year with modules on Bullying, Nutrition, Exercise and Heart Health, Dental Hygiene, Self Esteem and Hygiene, Tobacco Awareness and Summer Safety. “I learned a lot of information I need to know so that when I get older, I can keep making the right choices,” Jordan said. “I am not afraid to raise my hand anymore in class because if I get it wrong, it’s OK. Nobody’s perfect and we all get things wrong sometimes.” Danielle Kessler is the Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM coach and wellness specialist with Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital. “Children at this age have an inspiring drive to learn and succeed. It’s our job as a whole to cultivate that, and I feel really fortunate to be able to bring these lessons to them and see that they remember and use them every day,” Danielle said. “My grandpa in Pennsylvania cut down on his smoking a lot after I explained the dangers to him,” Erin said, adding that she intends to try to help him kick the habit all together. The Foundation launched the Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM pilot program in 2008. It has grown to a full-blown health and wellness initiative incorporated into the curriculum in 19 schools within La Porte and Starke counties. Averaging 1,200 students yearly, this program starts with an assessment of 4th graders’ knowledge of A post assessment helps capture how well the information was retained. Jordan, who has an artistic flair and wants to be an interior designer when she gets older, enjoyed the cookbooks funded by The Foundation that students took home as part of the nutrition component. “My mom started to buy healthy foods like Greek yogurt and baked chips and no sugary cereals.” “I learned that the messages on food boxes are sometimes commercials and don’t really tell you if the food is good for you. I can make breakfast for myself now that is healthy and fun.” “We are pretty active on our 90-acre blue-gate farm,” said Erin, describing her homestead by the gates at the end of the drive. “I am already pretty good with having a lot of energy, but Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM helped me learn to pay closer attention to food labels and it helped me get really organized,” Erin said. Her mom is a pathologist and Erin, too, plans to explore the field when she gets older, so the scientific aspects of the program interested her most. Teacher Chris Gesse said she believes a powerful part of the program lies in the self-esteem and self-confidence the girls have gained in just one year. “I am lucky to have witnessed the change in them throughout the year. These are young girls who were once shy and now can stand tall and proud and who definitely don’t quit very easily,” she said. “I know that the choices I make will always have consequences later in life. I can say ‘No,’ and I know Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM helped me learn to pay closer attention to food labels and it helped me get really organized. — Erin Johnson if someone says something bad about me, it’s truly what I think that matters,” Jordan said. “Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM will help me make the right decisions because it has helped me think of the consequences and have enough self-esteem to say ‘No’ before it is too late,” Erin said. As the girls transition into teens and young adults, they said they will look back at the Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM and remember the strength it gave them - right down to the secret handshake that binds club members to each other and their promises to live a healthy future. Meet Danielle Kessler, the Lil’ F.I.S.H. ClubTM coach and Wellness Specialist for IU Health La Porte Hospital. Danielle joined the organization in 2012 but began working with the Club while in a wellness position at the La Porte County Family YMCA. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in sports medicine and is a certified personal trainer. When school is out, Danielle focuses on other community wellness projects. Welcome, Danielle! Thanks to the generous support of The Foundation donors who fund this program, I have a unique opportunity to promote healthy behaviors in children and a chance to change lives in a positive way. – Danielle Kessler, Lil’ F.I.S.H.
