”What a long strange trip it’s been.” I
would add to that, “What a wonderful trip
it’s been!” I cannot thank each and every
one of you enough for your continued
support for the ONLY massage organization
that supports the profession. Whether
it be by volunteering at the local Unit or
Chapter level, or by just sending in a little
extra along with your membership dues to
support legislative activities of our Chapter,
I wholeheartedly thank you.
In March, my first year as president

ends and the next one begins. Most of my

hopes and plans have been realized. One

(California Massage Therapy Association.),
the organization that preceded the AMTA in

California. This allows us to operate more
efficiently. I have many plans and hopes for
annual conference & my second year, and I ask for your support

decided to do things a little different this

appointee. Longtime advocate, Stacey
DeGooyer has resigned from the Chair
position, and Tony Siacotos has been
appointed. Stacey is still involved with the
work in government relations and has been
mentoring Tony this past month. We are
grateful for all the hard work Stacey has
done in her role. I have had the pleasure of
working with Tony and am confident that
he will bring his expertise and powerful
energy to the membership. (see page 7) As
we move forward, we face some powerful
hurdles, including moratoriums on massage
businesses, clean up legislature to fix some
of the issues with AB1147, and continued
work with the CAMTC. Watch your eblasts
and the website for some great things to
come.
We are looking for new people to join
our Chapter Board. There are positions open
for 1st and 3rd Vice Presidents, Treasurer,
Northern Rep, and three Delegates and
elections will occur at the Chapter Business
Meeting on March 21. You might wonder
how serving on the Chapter Board compares
to a Unit Board position? The Chapter
Board meets monthly, mostly by phone,
with four face-to-face meetings throughout
the year. Travel expenses for the meetings
are paid and lodging is either supplied by
Chapter members or at reasonably priced
hotels local to the meeting. I try to keep
our phone meetings concise, and not go
over two hours. Expectations are that you
take on certain tasks, particularly if you
have an interest in a particular area like
sports massage, continuing education, or
legislation. Communication is generally
through email, and you need to check in once
or twice each week for communications
related to Chapter business. For more
info, please call or email. Given that my
Presidential term is for only one more year,
I’m looking for people who are interested
in the President position and who could
be mentored. Even if you’re interested for
some time in the future, please consider
this opportunity! Hope to see you all in the
coming months.

Open Board Positions in 2015
To be elected for a 2 year term
1st & 3rd Vice President
Treasurer
Northern Rep
Any professional member in good standing is eligible to run
for these Open Board positions (scheduled for election in
the odd years.) Complete Job Descriptions can be found on
the Chapter website or in the Officer’s Training Manual.
Eligibility: Must be a Professional Member in good
standing, reside in the State of California, be working in
massage therapy, and be in attendance at Chapter Business
Meeting to be elected.
General Requirements of All Offices
• Must attend all Chapter Board of Directors meetings
including Officers Training and annual Conference
• Must attend AMTA-CA Chapter Business Meeting
to be held at least once a year during the Chapter
Conference
• Agrees to uphold and abide by National AMTA
Bylaws and Code of Ethics, AMTA-CA Chapter
Standing Rules, Financial Policies & Procedures, and
Human Resources Guidelines
1st & 3rd Vice Presidents
• Presides as President Pro-tem in the absence of the
Chapter President and the other Vice Presidents
• Assume assignments as directed by the Chapter
President and/or Chapter Board of Directors
• Monitors the activities of assigned Chapter committees
• Recruits and mentors future Chapter leaders
• Submits articles to the newsletter
Treasurer
• Conducts day-to-day financial business
• Processes reimbursements
• Completes and submits reports
• Manages and oversees the budget
• Ensures operations are consist with National Bylaws
Northern Representatives
• Act as the primary liaison between the Chapter Board
of Directors and the Units in the northern section of
the Chapter
• Must reside in the northern section of the state of
California
• Provide a written report of Unit Activities at Chapter
Board Meetings and for the newsletter
Process: A Commission on Candidacy will vet all resumes
submitted for the open positions. If all positions have at
least one person running, there will be no nominations

DELEGATE ELECTION INFORMATION: At the Chapter Business meeting, we will elect
three Delegates to serve for a two year term (2015-2016) to represent California at the National
Conventions. These three Delegates will serve with continuing Delegates Mark Dixon (OCU)
and Jeannie Martin (REU). Delegate recommendations are currently being accepted from the
Units.

Keynote Presentation: Be an Activist in Your Success
Beverly May began her massage practice in 1973. For twenty
four years, she volunteered “in her spare time” to help massage
emerge from a soup of sincere new age explorations to the
profession it is becoming today. Beverly will discuss healing
the attitudes, fears and outdated laws that too often hold
massage therapists back from the full
potential of this incredible profession
to heal ourselves, our clients and
communities. Hear her story of vision
and activism and how we all need to
engage in creating our future.
Beverly May, CMT #1, has been
practicing massage professionally
since 1973, with 30 of those years fulltime. She worked for and by herself
for many years and later managed a
multi-therapist massage and sauna business. For 21 of those
years, she volunteered to help get the first massage regulatory
law in California. After helping create CAMTC, she spent
three years on the CAMTC Board of Directors. In 2011, she
was hired by CAMTC as Director of Governmental Affairs
and Special projects.
Integrative Spa Massage (SPA TRACK)
Many individuals who are sensitive to touch or who experience
injury or chronic pain are hesitant to receive massage for
fear that it will be painful. The SPA techniques taught in this
course are designed specifically to help these client gently
transition into deeper structural or therapeutic work without
pain or fear. Participants will learn to use exfoliation, mud
treatments and body wraps in combination with rhythmic
compressions to help clients develop
trust, increase circulation and relax
leading to a more effective and less
painful experience. Wet room not
necessary. These techniques can be
integrated into any practice.
Angie Dubis has 17 years of
clinical experience and 14 years as
an educator in the massage and spa
industry. Angie enjoys producing
treatment videos and is an active blogger for BIOTONE
Professional Massage Products.
3 hour Ethics Class
Massage therapists and bodyworkers will have an opportunity
to reflect on their own professionalism. Ethical issues and
situations within the massage therapy
and bodywork profession will be
discussed.
Dr. Karen Boulanger has been a
nationally certified massage therapist
since 1999. She is Editor-in-Chief of
the International Journal of Therapeutic
Massage & Bodywork and a trustee for
the Massage Therapy Foundation. In
addition to her office in San Jose, Karen
sees patients and conducts research at Stanford’s Children’s
Hospital.
Massage in the Medical Setting:
Getting your hands in the door (MEDICAL TRACK)
The gateway into clinical for the massage profession has
never been more welcoming, yet there are still few massage
therapists working in medical center settings. This workshop,
divided between lecture and hands-on, will give you a better
understanding of how to get your hands in the door, and
what to do with them once you get there. No new hands-on
techniques will be reviewed, but you may be reminded of
some you’ve forgotten. Please bring a
bed pillow. No lotion or massage table
needed.
Johnnette du Rand, LMT, works with
several southern California cancer
centers, and has been the coordinator
and trainer for their oncology massage
programs since 2003. A Greet The Day
co-founder and Society for Oncology
Massage Charter Member, Johnnette was recognized for her
contribution to the field of massage in the clinical setting with a
2008 award from the Women’s Cancer Research Foundation,
and received the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of
Greet The Day from the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer
Center, University of California Irvine, in 2013.

Meet Your New Government Relations Chair
AMTA-CA welcomes Tony
Siacotos as newly appointed
Government Relations Chair.
Tony entered the massage
therapy profession full-time in
1993 while living in New York.
He still considers this the single
smartest professional decision
of his life. In the past he has
served the New York AMTA
Chapter as Newsletter Editor and Chair of their Massage
Emergency Response Team. Since returning to California
in 2013, he has been fascinated by its unique regulatory
structure and was thrilled to become Government Relations
Chair for AMTA-California.
Tony Shares His Plan for Government Relations
The broad plan for the Government Relations Committee
this year is to support our members in working at the local
level with their legislators and city officials while the
Chapter Officers concentrate on mitigating the effects of
the most severe local ordinance changes and preparing for a
successful Sunset Review in 2016.
Yes, I have read that ridiculously long sentence five times
and it nearly BORES me to death. Nevertheless, it’s true,
and you will be astonished at how much fun you are going to
have being a part of it.

secret? It’s EASY! No, I’m NOT kidding. It’s actually
It's time for you to Adopt a Legislator!
The State of California has 40 Senators and 80
Assemblymembers who have NO ONE to teach them
the truth about massage therapy. Yes, these 120 poor,
unfortunate souls need guidance and patience, and YOU
can be the one to provide it for them. Your Chapter is
looking for 120 volunteers who will each agree to adopt
one of these deserving souls.
I know what you’re thinking: “They’re SO much work.”
“They can be VERY difficult to deal with.” “They NEVER
listen to me.”
Well, we all know that they can SEEM that way much
of the time, but the truth is that they are good-hearted
individuals, and they want to do the right thing. But for
too long they have been left on their own in their attempts
to understand our profession. And for too long they have
had others, people who do not understand our work and our
lives, telling them that we are really prostitutes and that we
need to be regulated as if we were prostitutes.
But YOU can change that. You can be the one that tells
them the truth about your profession. And the surprising
easy. Look at it this way: It is just a conversation about
work. If you can bitch about your job to your friends, if you
can describe the value of your work to a person you just met,
then you can do this.
All you do is talk to your adopted legislator about your life
and your concerns as a massage therapist. Our primary goal
is to be REAL to legislators and their staff. MOST of them
do not know a massage therapist or understand the day-today concerns of our working lives.
Without that knowledge, they will listen to whoever is in
their office presuming to talk about you and your profession.
And for the last two years, you may rest assured, it has not
been us. But now, it can be YOU.
So don’t delay. Send an e-mail to me with the subject line: “I

Therapist’s Thoughts on the Rosen Method by Carlos Messerschmidt
I was a fresh massage therapist when I met Marion Rosen
in 1997 and her work has touched, changed and inspired
many aspects of my life. I have a very successful practice
and enjoy the trust of many professionals as well as the
trust of my patients and clients. I deeply believe that
Rosen Method enhances every hands-on therapist skills to
an authentic level something that is in you, that can’t be
learned, that only you bring into this world.
The Rosen Method principles have enhanced my ability to
embody the trust that is essential to working successfully
with clients and patients as well as doctors. Learning to use
a soft and listening hand, that makes contact and connects
with muscle tension, I had to retrain my hands from doing to a
non-doing hand. Presence with myself and the client taught
me to follow subtle changes in the client’s breath and muscle
tension, supporting the possibility of shifts and changes.
A subtle change becomes a doorway into the recovery of
vast potential. That potential is you. Making contact with
muscle tension,
connecting
with the client,
observing
the
breath, waiting
for relaxation to
occur and being
with the unknown
is what it’s all
about. Trust is
the essence; it’s
powerful, easy, gentle and beautiful, a work your hands can
do for the rest of your life.
Rosen Method bodywork can deepen our capacity for selfawareness. Through gentle, non-intrusive touch and verbal
dialogue we can experience a fuller sense of relaxation.
Rosen Method works to access the unconscious feelings and
emotions that may be stored in our bodies. Rosen Method
touch allows us to acknowledge what is true in our bodies and
our being, creating a deeply felt sense of self.
Rosen Method Movement classes are held in a group setting
with people gathered in a circle to provide support and have
fun together. Set to music, these easy, unhurried movements
are designed to lubricate the joints and improve alignment and
flexibility. They also move and stretch all the muscles, allow
more ease when you breathe, and deepen awareness of the body.
The result of Rosen Movement includes relaxation, reduced
pain, improved posture, sense of wholeness, increased physical
and
emotional
awareness, joy, and
new vitality in the
participant’s body.
