The sky may be the limit for some, but for San Francisco-based painter Bill Samios, it’s his
point of departure. “Birds are amazing and beautiful, even in cities, where they live side by
side with us,” he says. “They’re so adaptable and travel between different worlds. That as a
spiritual metaphor really interests me.”

Raven Lotus
When Jay Jeffers of Jeffers Design Group was planning the Hamptons Showhouse, he
chose three of Bill’s smaller, exquisite aviary paintings, placing them adroitly atop one of
Bill’s more dramatic works. Featuring the larger than life image of a raven that dominates
Raven Lotus, an acrylic work on canvas, the painting is a study in the mythology of the
raven, “the only bird to fly toward the sound of gunfire,” Bill explains. “I thought it was timely
because we’re still at war.” And the lotus above the scavenger’s head? “I’m trying to
combine it with a peaceful metaphor.” Click here to read more about Jay Jeffers.

To consider how one chooses art for any room is a compelling question, for any
home-dweller as much as for any designer. To attempt to merge outdoor elements in an
inside space was the perfect opportunity to feature Bill’s paradoxically delicate yet edgy,
timely work, which has flown into (and after being sold, out of!) two of Manhattan’s chic
home boutique/galleries, Artware Editions , and Nest Interiors, while his murals have landed
on the pages of the most recent West Elm and Target Catalogs.
