Financial Aid Guide for Completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid 1 Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov Click on this icon to start 2 Get Started Select this option if you already have an FSA ID Select this option if you DO NOT have an FSA ID 3 Select START 2016-2017 FAFSA Click on this icon to start your 2016-17 FAFSA 4 To Start the Renewal Process If you are renewing your FAFSA, you will have the option of using your existing information 5 Create a Password You must create a password. If you need to pause the application process, the password allows you to return to your application and continue the process from the last section you completed. 6 Introduction Continue 7 Help and Hints Instructions are provided for each FAFSA question in the Help and Hints section on the right side of the page Have your personal information on hand 8 Online Chat When you select Help, a window similar to the one shown below will appear. Select the Contact Us tab and then click on Federal Student Aid Information Center. If you need additional help, you may chat with a Federal Student Aid Information Center representative by selecting the Help icon on the top left 9 Online Chat When you select Federal Student Aid Information Center, a window similar to this one will appear. To chat with a representative, select Chat with Us. 10 Enter Your Personal Information If you are married, divorced, widowed, or separated, you must indicate the date of your current civil status (Month and Year) 11 Complete Each Field If you are not a US Citizen, enter your Alien Registration Number Select #1 or #2 for a Bachelor’s degree, #3 or #4 for an Associate’s degree, #5 or #6 for Certificate or Diploma Select “Yes,” if you have already completed a Bachelor’s degree Select from 0 to 5 according to the years of undergraduate college education (associate’s and bachelor’s) 12 Complete Each Field Answer the questions according to your personal circumstances 13 High School Enter Name, City and State of your High School 14 School Selection Enter the Code: 015953 After entering the code, click Search Select the box Click ADD Continue 15 Housing Plans If you DO NOT live with your parents, select “Off Campus” Continue 16 Dependency Determination If your answer for all of these questions is “NO,” you should have your parents information on hand. You will need to provide parental information. GO TO SLIDE #18. Dependent Student If the answer to one or more of these questions is “YES,” GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE (#17). Independent Student 17 Independent Student Household Size: Enter your current household size. Include yourself. How many will be in college in 2016-17? Include yourself. GO TO SLIDE #27 18 Parental Information This option is automatically selected for Dependent Students Important: If you cannot provide your parent’s information, you may loose eligibility to some financial aid For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office 19 Complete the fields that apply to your situation Household Size: Enter your current household size. Include yourself How many will be in college in 201617? Include yourself. Do not include your parents, even if they are studying at a college level. If you parents are Married, Divorced, Separated or Widowed enter Month and Year 20 Did Your Parents File a 2015 Tax Return? If they filed a Tax Return, select “Already completed” If they did not file a Tax Return, select “Not going to file” IMPORTANT: Remember that, if your parents are married or live together and they filed tax return separately, you must include both tax returns information If they did not file a Tax Return, GO TO SLIDE #22 21 If Your Parents Filed a 2015 Tax Return Select the option that applies to your situation If you parent is given the option to transfer information from the IRS, he/she should do so by entering their FSA ID and clicking LINK TO IRS If your parent does not have an FSA ID he/she should click on Create an FSA ID and GO TO SLIDE #35 22 If Your Parents’ Filed a 2015 Tax Return Select the type of Tax Return filed by your parents If your parent did not earn money from working, enter $0 23 Where Can You Find the Requested Information? The Help and Hints section indicates where to find the requested information according to the type of Tax Return. In some questions there will be an indicator next to the question. If your parent filed a Taxed Return select NO. He/she must answer questions related to their income and assets. 24 If Your Parents Filed a 2015 Tax Return This is found on your parents Income Tax Forms: IRS Form 1040 use Line: 56 IRS Form 1040A use Line: 37 IRS Form 1040EZ use Line: 10 Enter exemptions claimed on your parents Tax Return IMPORTANT Include the taxpayer and the Spouse, as applicable 25 Additional Financial Information (Parents) If one of your parents pays child support for a minor who is not part of the household size, you may include the amount paid Enter amount of child support received in 2015 Enter amount received in 2015 of: Unemployment and Family financial assistance (cash given by other family members) Do NOT enter the amounts for untaxed income, such as Social Security and SNAP benefits American Opportunity Tax Credit: For IRS Form 1040 use Line: 50.For IRS Form 1040A use Line: 33. 26 Additional Financial Information (Parents) Answer questions 27 Student’s Financial Information (and Spouse, If Applicable) Student (and spouse) If a Tax Return was filed, select “Already completed.” If No Tax Return was filed, select “Not going to file.” IMPORTANT If you are married you must include information from both tax returns even if you have prenuptial agreements. This is a federal requirement. 28 Student/Spouse 2015 Tax Return Select the option that applies to your situation If you are given the option to transfer information from the IRS, you should do so by entering their FSA ID and clicking LINK TO IRS 29 Student/Spouse Income for 2015 Enter the income. If there was no income, enter $0. IMPORTANT If you indicated that you are married and you filed a Tax Return separately, you must include both Tax Return information, even if you have prenuptial agreements. If only one of you filed a Tax Return, you must include it. The Help and Hints section indicates where to find the requested information according to the type of Tax Return. If the FAFSA is not signed, it will be rejected Select Agree Enter your FSA ID and click SIGN Select NO If you DO NOT have an FSA ID, select Create an FSA ID and GO TO SLIDE #35 Independent Student: Click on SUBMIT MY FAFSA NOW. GO TO SLIDE #37 34 Parent’s Signature Select Agree One of your parents have to enter their FSA ID and click SIGN If neither of your parents has an FSA ID, select Create an FSA ID. One of your parents will have to create one and sign the FAFSA. GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE (#35) Click SUBMIT MY FAFSA NOW AND GO TO SLIDE #43 35 Create an FSA ID The username and password you choose will be your FSA ID The password must include numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and special characters The system will open a window, similar to the one shown in this image, to create your FSA ID. Complete all the fields. If you already have an FSA ID and you have submitted your FAFSA, GO TO SLIDE #43 36 Personal Information: FSA ID Enter your personal information 37 Link your FSA ID to your PIN Enter your PIN and click VALIDATE If you already have a PIN, a window similar to the one shown above, will appear. Enter your PIN number. If you DO NOT have a PIN, the system will not display this option. If you DO NOT remember your PIN, click on Forgot my PIN 38 Profile Information: FSA ID If you included your PIN in the previous step, your information will automatically appear and you will only have to confirm and/or update your information Complete all the fields 39 Security Questions: FSA ID Select 2 security questions Create 2 personalized security questions Enter an important date of your life 40 Review Your Information: FSA ID Review your information to make sure it is correct Read the terms and conditions, and click here to accept them 41 Confirm Your Email: FSA ID IMPORTANT You will receive an email with a code. Open another tab in your web browser to view your email without closing this window. Enter the code you received via email Click CONTINUE 42 FSA ID Confirmation A window will open confirming the creation of your FSA ID. Return to the FAFSA window to continue. 43 FAFSA Confirmation Select this option to print or send your confirmation via email Estimated elegibility amount 44 Response: Student Aid Report (SAR) 2016-2017 * In the next few days, you will receive the response to your FAFSA Application called Student Aid Report (SAR). If you were selected by the U.S. Department of Education for Verification (*), you must submit a copy of the documents used to complete your FAFSA, as applicable. You must also submit the completed Verification Form to your Financial Aid Office in order for them to determine to which financial aid you qualify. You DO NOT have to wait in line.
