The Keynote Address July - September 2008 UPCOMING EVENTS August 2, 2008 Iowa Cubs Employee/Client Baseball Outing (Des Moines, Iowa) August 5— 5—7, 2008 Kansas Environmental Conference (Overland Park, Kansas) Annual Client/Vendor Golf Outing The Annual Client/Vendor Golf Outing was held Friday, July 11, 2008 at the Country Club in Newton, Iowa. It was a beautiful sunny day, with warmer temperatures and higher humidity...but but a nice breeze! breeze August 16, 2008 Kansas City T-Bones Employee/Client Baseball Outing (Kansas City, Kansas) Members of Keystone Staff were joined by Clients from—Apex Environmental, Barker Lemar, Geode Environmental LLC, Lincolnway Energy, Montgomery Watson Harza, and Trileaf Thank you also to all the participating Vendors, including—Art a la Carte, Edge Construction Services, Forbes Office Solutions, Gallagher Benefit Services, Interstate Insurance, Matthias, Campbell, Tyler, Nuzum & Rickers, Maxim Advertising, Midland Scientific, SESCO Management Consultants, UPS, US Bank, and Quality Environmental Containers (QEC) and Phillip Lilly who provided the bottled water for the event. August 18— 18—20, 2008 New Jersey Audit—Newton September 1, 2008 Labor Day Holiday September 5, 2008 United Way KickOff Clients, Vendors, and Keystone Staff all took part in the noon lunch (catered by Quiznos), 18-hole golf event, evening supper (catered by Culvers), and some social time to “talk shop” or just get to know each other better as partners in business. September 8— 8—9, 2008 Iowa Rural Water Fall Conference (Okoboji, Iowa) The Newton Country Club Staff, Golf Pro, and Pro Shop Staff were very accommodating and great hosts for Keystone’s golf outing! Recently, KMT has been getting business from a couple of biodiesel plants including Central Iowa Energy right here in Newton. KMT is pushing ahead into the biofuels testing market with new equipment set to arrive in mid August. KMT has also recently published a new E-Commerce web www.dieselcart.com, and is experiencing strong growth in that area as well. site, If you get a chance, please visit the KMT web site, www.kmtlabs.com, and check out the analysis we plan to offer the biodiesel and diesel testing market. ~Josh King Department Spotlight— Spotlight—Microbiology New Incubator Jim Pryke— Pryke—Sample Technician This picture was emailed from Gerald Edgar—the Safety Team Leader at SauerSauer-Danfoss (Ames, Iowa) We recently purchased a BOD incubator incubator. It will allow us to increase our BOD storage capacity. The incubator stabilizes the temperature of the BOD/CBOD bottles for the five day incubation time frame. It is a picture of Jim Pryke safely sampling at Sauer-Danfoss “Safety is its own reward—earn it!” Farewell— Farewell—Lisa Riegel A farewell party for Lisa Riegel’s last day was held on May 22, 2008 from 11:30—12:30 PM in the conference room. It was a special time to recognize Lisa for her dedication and 17+ years of employment with Keystone Laboratories. Page 3 The Keynote Address Summer Employees— Employees—Newton During the summer months when we need a little “extra” staffing to help us keep up with our increased sample load, we rely on our Summer Employees, who most usually are high school or college students. Some of the students are working here for the first time, and some have returned for several summers. We thoroughly enjoy having them and we look forward to their return as the busy season comes. This crew has provided exceptional help to get us through Summer 2008. Thanks to each one of you! Stephanie Goos Stephanie Goos was hired May 27, 2008 to assist the Inorganics Department. She attends Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and will be a sophomore. Stephanie’s prior job was as a lifeguard. She loves all sports, especially soccer. Stephanie also likes to be outside and listen to music. She has a dog named Roxy, and a cat named, Speedo. Jocelyn Isley Jocelyn Isley was hired May 19, 2008 to assist the Sample Prep Department. She attended Newton High School, and graduated in 2008. Jocelyn’s prior job was with Pizza Ranch. She enjoys singing, running, shopping and spending time with her dog, Chloe. Jocelyn will be attending Evangel University in Springfield, MO in the Fall 2008 as a freshman. Stephanie Larson Stephanie Larson works as a chemist for the Inorganics Department. Her prior employment was with Iowa State University as an undergrad lab assistant. She has since graduated from Iowa State University (May 2008) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry, and she will attend Veterinary School in August 2008. Stephanie has some pets that include horses, dogs, cats, and a betta fish. She also enjoys golfing and riding her horse. Rebecca Roth Rebecca Roth was hired July 22, 2008 to work as a Lab Technician in the Sample Prep Department. Her main duties are to work with testing water and soil samples. Her prior employment was with the Maytag Dairy Farm. She is currently attending Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa for media studies. She would like to go into Film/TV, mostly behind the scenes. Her hobbies are dancing, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. She has one cat named Edison. Rebecca enjoys traveling. One of her most favorite places to go is Estes Park, Colorado to hike. Rebecca and her sister are planning on going to the top of Long’s Peak this summer. She also enjoyed traveling for two weeks in Europe during the Summer of 2007. Welcome….we’re glad to have you as part of Keystone’s Summer Crew! Keystone Laboratories, Page 4 The Keynote Address Employee Pictures “While the Cat’s Away the Mice will Play!” Bill and Denell Henninger Celebrated Their 28th Wedding Anniversary— Anniversary—June 26, 2008 “Jerry the Model Model” “If our clients have questions about their data, we are always happy to talk to them and make sure they have the answers they need.” ~Jerry Dawson Organics Laboratory Manager Iowa Floods Update The Iowa clean-up effort is underway as the state struggles to try and “put back” all that was washed away. EPA Region 7 has been granted an additional $4 million of funding from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to continue hazardous materials and oil-related operations. Keystone Laboratories is also making efforts to provide services to the communities that are dealing with the aftermaths of our flood. Our Waterloo location has experienced and increased volume of samples in the area. We are also offering 1/2 off the first work order of all new clients who choose to bring the sample to Keystone. Page 5 The Keynote Address Staff Profile— Profile—Wyatt Schmidt Wyatt Schmidt works as a Chemist I for the Inorganics Department at Keystone Laboratories’ Newton location. His main job duties include— running the Distillation Rack, NOX, Total Phosphorus, and many other Wet Chem analyses. Wyatt has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and his previous employer was Lincoln Orthopedic Physical Therapy where he worked as a Physical Therapy Tech. Wyatt began his employment with Keystone Laboratories in February 2007. His family includes his parents, Jim and Debbie, who live in Lincoln, Nebraska. His father, Jim, is a Professor of Economics at the University of Nebraska. Wyatt has an older brother Mike (age 28), and a little brother Owen (age 21). Wyatt shares that he had a hamster named “Harry” who sadly passed last year. Wyatt’s “off-work” interests include fishing, hunting, and boating. He also enjoys going to Nebraska football games...and driving to Kansas City every weekend! Wyatt shares that his favorite vacation spot is Las Vegas. Also, Wyatt occasionally delivers for Quiznos despite “being treated poorly by the ownership” Wyatt would like to include “I don’t care what other people say, I think Peter’s jokes are hilarious!”! We’re glad to have you as a part of Keystone Laboratories, Wyatt! ICPICP-MS Update Happy Birthday, Denell! The Iowa DNR has granted provisional certification for metals analysis by methods 200.8 and 6020 by ICP-MS. We have already started to analyze drinking water lead and copper samples. A group of co-workers celebrated Denell Henninger’s birthday on July 2, 2008 by going to lunch together at Panda Garden in Newton. A great time was had by all! Welcome Summer Intern— Intern—Risa Heck Bazal Risa Heck Bazal is working as an intern in the Marketing and Human Resources Department. She is a 5th—year senior at Buena Vista, majoring in Business Management and Human Services. Her prior employment was as a Senior Customer Sales Consultant at Maytag. Risa is married to Jared, and they have a son—Nicholas who is 8 years old and going into 2nd grade. Her hobbies include reading, shopping, and changing hair colors! She has four dogs including three Cocker Spaniels—Sadie, Cooper, and Jackson and one Pomeranian named Kobe. The family also cares for one foster dog—Skyler—who is also a Cocker Spaniel. Risa shares that she and Jared are licensed foster parents and they enjoy coaching their son’s soccer team—the Newton Bulls. Welcome to Keystone, Risa!
