Susan Clewlow has had a tough year. Not only has
the 46-year-old from Penkhull had a stroke as a
result of a heart defect, she has undergone surgery
to correct the condition. The mum-of-two, who
works at Sainsbury’s in Stoke, was nominated for a
makeover by husband Carl
Hair & Beauty, gave Susan a fresh but
glamorous look.
Donna says: “Susan doesn’t really wear
make-up so I decided to keep it natural.
“The range we use in the salon is Art Deco.
“I started off with a light foundation to even
out Susan’s skin tone and enhanced her
cheeks with pink blusher.
“I then used a brown in the corner of her
eyes and highlighted to the corner with a pale
cream. I finished off with a light application of
mascara and a plum lipstick.”

Sally Willis, from Fenton, is a
former learning and development
co-ordinator who is now a fulltime mum to 16-month-old Oliver.
The 32-year-old is married to
Steve, aged 31, who is the house
learning manager at Birches
Head High School. She is
expecting their second child.

“I had a fantastic time,” says Susan. “I
have had a tough year although I’m
recovering now. I get very tired easily but I’ve
got a good husband who has been looking
after me.
“He’s been fantastic.
“Everyone was lovely during the day.
“I used to have longer hair and then when I
had my stroke it became too heavy to
manage so this style is much easier.”

Vanessa Rushton cut and coloured Susan’s
hair.
The hair stylist at Keido Hair & Beauty in
Town Road, Hanley, says: “Susan was ready
for a change. Her hair style was growing out
but she still had some short layers. I razored
it into a more manageable length and created
layers throughout to give more volume and
movement.
“Her roots were lifted into an ash blonde to
match her existing colour and I added lots of
darker, honey tones to complement her
complexion.
“I used Matrix gloss and wax to finish her
versatile and easy-to-manage style.
“She looked really lovely and enjoyed her
pamper day.”
■ Susan’s cut and colour would have cost
£75.
Natalie Anderson is deputy manager at
Dorothy Perkins in The Potteries Shopping
Centre.
She helped to create a smart and dressy look
for Susan.
“Susan usually wears trousers,” says
Natalie. “So we chose a black pencil skirt
with a black belt and gold buckle priced at
£25 for a real change.
“We then picked a cream top with gold and
black flower embellishment for £29.50 and a
chunky gold necklace for £12.50. The
necklace comes with a pair of earrings as
well.
“Next we picked a pair of court shoes for £17
which were higher than she’d normally wear,
but they have cushioning in which makes
them quite comfortable.
“Finally we selected a retro type bag for £20.
“She bought everything that we chose for
her.”

Sally and her family moved to
Stoke-on-Trent from East Sussex
in August 2011. They have been
exploring the area and finding fun
places to visit as a family.

Sally often takes Oliver to free

Library, where they sing songs
and play musical instruments.
“There are similar sessions at
libraries across the city,” she
says. “They’re suitable for babies
from just a few months old right
through to pre-school children.

■ To chill out: Fenton Children’s
Centre.

sensory room at Fenton’s
Children’s Centre so that she and
Oliver can relax and enjoy
watching twinkling lights and glow
tubes.
She says: “I used to use the
sensory room a lot. It’s something
we didn’t have access to when we
lived in the south.”

■ When the weather is good:
Central Forest Park.
“We enjoy walking around the
park, but there is also a massive
adventure playground for slightly
older children,” says Sally.
“We also enjoy visiting our local
park in Fenton.”

■ A day out: Biddulph Grange.
The Willis family are National
Trust members, so Biddulph
Grange was a natural choice for
days out.
“We used to have quite a few
National Trust properties near us
in East Sussex, so it made sense
for us to pay for an annual pass
and then visit as many times as
we liked for no extra charge,”
says Sally.
“There is lots to explore at
Biddulph Grange, although there
are quite a few steps, so it is
better for walking children or
babies in slings rather than
people pushing buggies.”
Cost: Adults £7.35, children
£3.70 or families £18.40. Annual
membership is available.
■ When the weather is bad:
Funsters, Stoke.
The soft play facilities have
proved the ideal place for Oliver to
run around and explore when the
weather is not good enough to
play outdoors.
“There are soft play areas, ball
pits and lots of toys to choose
from,” says Sally. “We’ve been
there a few times.
Cost: £3.75 for one hour or
£4.25 for unlimited play. Midweek term time tots sessions are
£2.75 for one hour or £3.25 for
unlimited play.
