Inspired by true events, The Land of Five Towers
tells the story of Alif, who had never set foot outside
of West Sumatra. He passes his childhood searching
for fallen durian fruit in the jungle, playing soccer
on rice paddies, and swimming in the blue waters
of Lake Maninjau. His mother wants him to attend
an Islamic boarding school, a pesantren, while he
dreams of public high school. Halfheartedly, he follows his mother’s wishes. He takes a grueling threeday bus ride from Sumatra to Madani Pesantren in
a remote village on Java. On his first day, Alif is
captivated by the powerful phrase, “man jadda wajada,” or, He who gives his all will surely succeed.
He quickly becomes friends with five boys from
across the archipelago, and together they become
known as the Fellowship of the Manara. Beneath the
mosque’s minaret, the boys gaze at the clouds on
the horizon, and imagine distant lands like America
and Europe. Where will these dreams take them?
They don’t know. What they do know was: never
underestimate dreams, no matter how high they
may be.

Ahmad Fuadi was born in Bayur, a small village on
the shores of Maninjau Lake. After graduating from
Padjadjaran University in International Relations, he
worked as a journalist at Tempo magazine. In 1999,
he won a Fulbright scholarship for his master studies at the School of Media and Public Affairs, George
Washington University in Washington DC. While doing his studies, he also worked as correspondent for
Tempo and Voice of America (VOA). They reported
In 2004, Fuadi won the Chevening Award to study
documentary filmmaking at Royal Holloway, University of London, and also the opportunity to live and
learn in Canada, Singapore and Italy. The Land of
Five Towers was made into a movie in 2012 and
won several awards. In 2011, Fuadi won the Liputan
6 Award, SCTV for motivation and education, IKAPI
Best Writer, and First Prize for Best Fiction by Perpusnas (The National Library). Ahmad was selected
as resident at the Bellagio Center, Italy in 2012,
and the following year won an award from DJKHI
Kemenkumham (Directorate General of Intellectual
Rights) in the novel category.
A portion of the royalties from the trilogy go to build
Komunitas Menara, a volunteer-based social organization that provides free schools, libraries, clinics,
