Fair to offer mix of attractions
Familiar favorites and
new events planned
By Melody Vallieu
[email protected]
MIAMI COUNTY — Break out your
boots and cowboy hats because plans
are well under way for the 2016 Miami
County Fair, according to organizers.
Miami County Fair Board member
Roberta Jacobs said the 169th year for
the fair, which will be held Aug. 12-18,
will offer some new events, along with
many things the community has come to
expect.
Jacobs said this year’s events will see
an extra night of harness racing — a
popular attraction at the fair — for a
total of three nights this year.
The truck and tractor pulls will return
on Saturday night, along with the human
tractor pulls during the day.
The band spectacular has been moved
to Thursday night, the last night of the
fair, according to Jacobs.
“I’m kind of excited about that. The
last night of the fair used to be as big as
the first night of the fair. It will bring out
a lot of family members — moms, dads,
grandmas and grandpas.”
The popular wood carver, located
along the midway, will return, along with
a favorite from a few years ago, Swifty
Swine.
“Everybody loved the Swifty Swine.
They are hard to get, they are pretty popular,” she said. “We’re lucky to get them
back; they are coming straight from the
Kentucky State Fair.”
Pony rides, pro wrestling on Saturday
and the mechanical bull riding all also
will return.
The Burton Brothers will return with
the rides for the fair.
“They have been very good to work
with,” Jacobs said.
This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the stadium, which was com-
pleted in 1916.
“We have no plans of changing the
stadium,” Jacobs said. “It will see many,
many more years.”
The weather plays an important role in
the success of the fair each year. Jacobs
said organizers hope for a year of nice
days with lower humidity — and no rain.
“The fair goes on, unless it’s dangerous
weather. Rain or shine, we still have the
fair,” she said. “Honestly, we just hope
for no rain. If it’s not raining, people will
come,” Jacobs said.
The annual Salute to Veterans ceremony will be offered on Wednesday
in conjunction with Armed Forces Day,
when veterans and a spouse are admitted
free with ID. It is also Senior Citizens
Day, when those 65 and older get in free
and receive a free lunch.
“These are several things people look
forward to,” Jacobs said.
Kids Day is scheduled for Monday,
Aug. 15, and one parent gets in free per
child under the age of 10 until 1 p.m.
Kids Day will include lots of activities for
kids in the morning, according to Jacobs.
She said children also will receive a free
lunch, special entertainment and there
will be ride specials in the afternoon.
The entertainment tent promises different kinds of music every evening from
local talent, including Gospel Fest on
Sunday.
“That has become very popular,”
Jacobs said.
The Sunday concert this year will
feature Chris Janson with special guests
Carter Winter and Jameson Rodgers.
Jacobs said Janson having performed
at the 2016 Country Concert in the Hills
has peaked interest and ticket sales are
steady.
“People are saying he put on one of the
best shows of the weekend,” she said.
Tickets for the concert are on sale
at the secretary’s office inside the fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays,
online at www.miamicountyohiofair.com
or call (937) 335-7492 for more information.
Anthony Weber | Troy Daily News
Children from Angela’s Circle of Friends Child Care and Learning Center, including Mackinsey DeJesus,
get an up-close and personal experience while visiting an American toad from Brukner Nature Center
during Kids Day in 2015.
Fair entry will again be $5 and a season pass $20, Jacobs said, which she
considers a great deal.
“For a $5 value, look at all you get,”
she said of the midway, entertainment,
the merchants building and more.
But, Jacobs reminds that the barns will
be chock-full of livestock and other 4-H
youth and adult projects.
“Of course, you can’t forget all of the
barns and the kids showing their youth
projects, that’s what we’re all about,” she
said.

‘We’re going to have a good time’
Janson ready for Miami County Fair debut
By Jim Davis
[email protected]
Don’t be afraid to shout and let
Chris Janson know you’re having a
good time at his county fair show. In
fact, he’s counting on it.
Fresh off the success of his debut
album “Buy Me a Boat” Janson said
he’d like nothing better than to throw
a little party when he headlines the
Miami County Fair concert Aug. 14 at
the fairgrounds.
“I thrive on hand-clapping and
people standing up and having a good
time in the name of music,” the Missouri-native said during a recent phone
interview. “I feed a lot off the crowd.
The louder they yell, the better I get.”
Joined by opening acts Carter Winter and Jameson Rodgers, Janson said
he plans on playing a selection of his
own hits, as well as songs he’s penned
for other artists through the years.
“We’re looking forward to coming to Troy. It’ll be a family oriented
show - classy, clean and good times,”
Janson said. “We’re going to sing a lot
of songs off the ‘Buy Me a Boat’ album
and a bunch of other hit songs that I’ve
written for friends of mine that have
been on the radio. There’ll be a lot of
harmonica playin’ guitar playin’ and
hand clapping. We’re going to have a
good time.”
An accomplished songwriter – he cowrote LoCash’s Top-5 hit “I Love This
Life” as well as songs for Tim McGraw,
Justin Moore, Lee Brice and Randy
Houser – Janson wrote or co-wrote all
11 songs on “Buy Me a Boat.”
The title song, he said, helped take
him to new heights over the past year
PROVIDED PHOTO
The Miami County Fair concert is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 14 with singer/songwriter Chris Janson slated to
headline the show.
and a half.
“It changed the game for us. That
song started out as an independent
release and it’s succeeded to platinum
status and a No. 1. It’s just unbelievable how big a song can be and goes to
show how big one can get. It’s pushed
over into this year in a big way, too,”
he said. “It’s just a fun, happy song. I
wrote it from real life and a perspective of how I look at things. It’s very
blue collar, how I grew up and how I’ll
always be.”
It’s a thread that seems to run
throughout many of Janson’s songs,
including subsequent singles “Power
of Positive Drinkin’” and “Holdin’
Her.”
“A lot of my songs are very honest,
real songs. Some of them are made
up, but I always tell people one way or
another,” he said. “I hope people leave
with a good understanding that I’m a
Christian man and also a guy who likes
to have a great time up there on stage,
and I hope fans take home a feeling
that I’m a guy they can grab a Mountain Dew or a beer with and hang out
on the back porch.
“I like to be who I am and I hope
people enjoy that,” he added.
Janson, 30, said he’ll share the stage
with a trio of fellow musicians he looks
forward to performing with each night.
“I have a three piece band – real simple. I like to keep my crew small and
the music big,” he joked. “I’m proud of
these guys. They bring a good attitude
and they’re great musicians and I look
forward to playing with them every
night.”
And while Janson’s in town there’s
a good chance you might run into him
— he’s been known to sneak off the
bus and grab a bite to eat or look for a
good place to fish.
“I grew up in a small town and I love
getting that personal interaction with
people,” he said. “I like to get out and
explore the town and may even fish a
little.”
The Sunday night show is slated to
get underway at 7 pm. Ticket information can be found on the Miami
County Fair website at miamicountyohiofair.com.

Janson or to check out his tour schedule, visit chrisjanson.com.

Kids ready to enter art, projects
Adults also enter
many projects at
annual event
By Sam Wildow
[email protected]
MIAMI COUNTY — Many county
participants are gearing up for the
Miami County Fair with many children
and teens putting the finishing touches
on the projects they are entering for
the Art Hall or other groups.
“We have a variety of stuff entered,”
Brandy Norman of Girl Scout Troop
32404 said.
Norman said that last year it
appeared like participation in the Art
Hall went up, but their participation in
Girl Scouts had decreased.
“In the Girl Scouts, they’re working
on Journey badges,” Norman said.
Her girls like to do all kinds of projects for Girl Scouts and the Art Hall
when it comes to the fair.
“They like to do the sewing projects,” Norman said. “One year they
made bird houses.”
This year, they are working on inventions to enter.
“My Daisy (Girl Scout) is making an
invention to help wash dishes faster, so
she’s looking forward to it,” Norman
said. “My Junior (Girl Scout), she’s
doing a photography one.”
In the Art Hall, Norman said that
her girls enjoy the baking and cooking
side.
“In the Art Hall, they usually like to
do all of the cooking projects,” Norman
said.
When it comes to help from social
media, Norman said that she limits her
girls’ use of Pinterest or other websites

for ideas in order to have the girls
think up their own ideas.
“Not with my girls, but a lot of them
do,” Norman said when asked if her
girls use Pinterest in preparation for
the fair. “But not with my girls, they
have to use their own imagine. With
their recipes, sometimes I let them get
them on Pinterest.”
In regard to social media for the
Miami County Fair, they can be
found on Facebook and on Twitter @

can also share their Miami County
Fair moments with others by using the

Bednar said the most important
thing the public can do to ensure
they stay healthy at the fair is to
wash their hands regularly.
“Proper hand washing is so important, especially before eating, and
after handling animals or using the
restroom,” Bednar said. “Make sure
to wash hands thoroughly with soap
and hot water.”
Miami County Public Health officials are busy at fair time, helping to
ensure food is safe and sanitary.
“All food booths are required to
obtain a license and be inspected,”
Bednar said. “Miami County Public
Health staff will be onsite to ensure
that all food operations are properly
licensed and that all operators are
following food safety rules.”
Miami County Public Health will
have a booth set up in the Merchant building. The booth will be
staffed by MCPH employees who
can provide information and answer
questions about a variety of healthrelated topics.
The MCPH staff will also promote
health topics on specific days of the
fair. For example, nursing staff will
be offering height, weight and blood
pressure monitoring for seniors on
Senior Day, Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Staff will also conduct height, weight
and BMI checks for children on Kids
Day, on Monday, Aug. 15.
Throughout the fair week, MCPH
will promote the Safe Communities
Drive Sober Pledge, summer safety
topics, Zika Virus information, and
getting children ready for the school
year regarding vaccination information, physicals and nutrition tips.
For new mothers, the MCPH will
also offer a “Nursing Nook.” The
breastfeeding area will include rocking chairs for mothers feeding their
children. The booth will be located
next to the MCPH booth in the Merchant Building. The booth is made
MARKET
possible by a donation from the Ohio
Lactation Consultant Association
and assistance from True Life Community Church and Miami County
WIC.

“We’ve had no problems at all. We partner a lot with the Miami County Sheriff’s
Office for security and we have people
here who help out as well,” Wright said.
If you choose to consume alcohol
at the fair, remember to be safe. If the
weather is hot, drink plenty of water
in between beers. Alcohol is a diuretic,
which means it encourages the kidneys
to lose extra fluid. That is why you go to
the bathroom more frequently when you
drink alcohol.
Alcohol also makes you sweat more. In
combination with heat and frequent trips
to the bathroom, this could cause you
to lose more fluid than you take in and
become dehydrated.
And last, but certainly not least, don’t
drink and drive.

Ready … set … recycle!
By Belinda M. Paschal
[email protected]
MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami
County Fair will be replete with recreation and rides, but while you’re romping
and reveling, don’t forget another important “R” — recycling.
“We will have recycling containers with plastic bags in them located
throughout the fairgrounds,” said Fair
Manager Jill Wright.
“We’ve been recycling at the fair for
several years, longer than I’ve been in
this position, and this is my fifth year.”
The recycling containers will be supplied by RT Industries/Riverside, Wright
said.
“They’re really good about setting
them up and checking them daily. They
come in and collect them every day,” she
noted. “It’s something we’re happy we
can do to help support them.”
Not only do the fair’s efforts support
the workers from Riverside and RT
Industries, but recycling also is a great
way to:
• Reduce the amount of waste that
goes to landfills
• Conserve natural resources
• Prevent pollution by reducing the
need to collect new raw materials
• Help save energy
• Help sustain the environment
Wright said that the recycling containers are well-used, even by vendors and
concessionaires. “All the cardboard that
the vendors have, they make sure they
get separated and put in the proper containers,” she said.
Hopefully, fairgoers will help Mother
Earth by continuing to utilize the bins to
dispose of bottles, cans and other recyclable items, Wright said.
“It’s good for the environment, and it’s
also helping out the local people from
RT/Riverside,” she said.

MCAS receives $50,000 grant
By Melanie Yingst
[email protected]
MIAMI COUNTY —The Miami
County Agricultural Society was
awarded a $50,000 grant from the Ohio
Department of Agriculture recently and
plans are under way to add to the fairgrounds facilities.
The MCAS will match the grant
with another $50,000 to build a new
restroom/shower facility near the horse
arena, as well as install an LED message
board to promote the fairgrounds’ various activities throughout the year.
MCAS secretary and manager Jill
Wright said the grant was awarded to
the county’s agriculture society this
June.
“Ever since they tore down the restrooms (near the horse arena) several
years ago, we knew we’d like to put
in restrooms out there,” Wright said.
“This is just a great way to kick-start it.
With campers out there, they have to
walk up to the Duke Lundgard building
… our hopes are we can rent that area a
little more because they’ve been working on the horse arena and getting that
going and they can have more horse
shows out there. We needed it.”
Wright said the building will include
handicapped-accessible restrooms, as
well as three shower shower stalls on
each side for patrons. The former facilities in the horse arena were torn down
several years ago. The new restroom
facility is expected to be completed in
the spring of 2017.
“We are looking forward to it because
it’s something that was needed out
there for a while now,” Wright said.
The LED sign will be located outside
of the fair board office, which will be
visible from County Road 25-A.
“We will have it change for events.
We only can fit one event on the board
we have now so with this, we can have
many different rotating events on the
screen,” Wright said.
Other improvements to the fairgrounds this year also include the
regrading of the cattle barns floors,
Cove Springs Grange’s exterior paint
and roof repairs, and septic system
updates.
Other ground improvements includes
the clearing of the north end of the fairgrounds.

Volunteering a way for life
Wheatons honored for contributions to fair
By Melody Vallieu
[email protected]
SPRINGCREEK TOWNSHIP — Randy
and Paula Wheaton were both excited and
surprised to recently be honored by the
Miami County Fair Board.
Paula said being named the 2016 Fair Supporter of the Year is indeed an honor, but
they were surprised because she believes
there are so many other worthy people that
could have been chosen.
“We were kind of excited and kind of
surprised,” Paula said. “You know, there are
so many other people that they could have
picked, we were just really surprised.”
Fair Manager Jill Wright said the Wheatons are absolutely deserving of the recognition.
“Randy and Paula Wheaton were chosen
for all of their time and dedication given
throughout the years. For me personally, I
can depend on them to lock up a building
late at night and then turnaround and unlock
it first thing in the morning and not have to
worry about it getting completed,” Wright
said. “They are just dependable and always
willing to help if needed.”
Paula said the couple got to attend the
annual fair convention in Columbus to
receive their recognition, which is fun in
itself. She said people from other counties
are recognized similarly throughout the state
at the convention as well.
Both Randy and Paula have a storied past
in the agriculture world.
Randy was a 4-H member in Clark County
in his youth, showing hogs, and Paula was
a 10-year member of the Springcreek Loyal
Worker’s, taking sewing and cooking. Paula
also represented her township as a Junior
Fair Board member.
In their adult lives, Paula has served on
the Miami County 4-H Barbecue Committee,
holding many positions, including chairman. She also was involved with the Miami
County Farm Bureau where she served as
secretary and president, making several trips
to Washington, D.C. to represent Miami
County.
The parents of two, Chris and Allan, they
supported Allan in 4-H for many years as he
showed rabbits and goats, Paula said. Following in his parents’ footsteps, Allan also was a
Junior Fair Board member and continues to
volunteer his time at the fair.
“We had so much fun when he was in 4-H,”
Paula said.
Continuing their legacy, the couple’s grandchildren also participated in the fair for the
first time in 2015 in the Art and Horticulture
halls.
Beyond the fairgrounds, the couple farm
more than 200 acres together. Paula also is
a cook at Piqua Manor Nursing Home and
Randy was formerly employed at Shepard
Grain Co., where he also farmed for the
Shepard family. He currently is employed at
Premier Feeds.
The two are known for doing whatever is
needed done, according to fair officials, from
helping with weigh-ins, to loading animals,
checking projects in or transporting
people to their cars. They also help
in the Art Hall and Horticulture Hall.
Paula also helps with the Christmas
tree and tablescaping entries at the
fair, helping to set the entries up and
getting judges for the events.
“If someone asks us, we help them
whatever it is needed,” Paula said.
Paula said her favorite part of the
fair can sometimes be the saddest.
“I think mostly seeing everybody
come out and then seeing the kids
show off their 4-H projects that
they’ve worked so hard on, that is
definitely my favorite part of being
involved,” Paula said. “But, watching
the kids sell their projects, that is
hard, they get attached.”
Paula and Randy hope the community will support the fair by attending
the week of Aug. 12-18, and hope to
get a chance to stop and say hello to
so many they have met through their
involvement.
“We plan on being there in and
out, and if people need something,
they usually just have to ask,” Paula
said.

Royalty to reign over fair
Carsey, Troy tapped as king

MIAMI COUNTY —The Miami
County Fair crowned its 2016 royal
advocates during its annual contest
on Saturday, July 23.
Keagan Carsey and Megan Troy
will proudly represent their hometown fair at this year’s Miami County
Fair from Aug. 12-18.
Carsey, 15, of Troy, is the son of
Casandra and Ryan Carsey. Carsey
represented the Miami East FFA in
the contest. The Miami East High
School sophomore said he decided
to enter the contest after Miami
East FFA adviser Marie Carity urged
him to enter to represent the FFA
throughout the fair.
Carsey will exhibit chickens at both
the county fair and at the Ohio State
Fair.
“Every day I go out there to feed
and water them, clean their pens —
stuff like that,” Carsey said. “I really
enjoy showing. There are really specific standards, especially at the state
fair, that you have to follow. I’ve gone
to state fair for the past four years.”
Megan Troy, 16, of Troy, has participated in 4-H for eight years. She
represented Concord Odds and Ends
and is the daughter of Andrew and
Nicole Troy. She will be a senior at
Troy High School.
“What I found the most interesting
about 4-H is that there is a hobby for
everyone, so nobody is left out when
you are in 4-H,” Troy said.
Troy shared how she had entered
the contest two years ago and decided to give it another shot this summer.
“This year I felt a lot more confident and I wanted share all my experience from what I’ve grown from
learning the last time I was in it,”
Troy said. Troy shared how she loves

Entertainment abounds at 169th annual event
From racing pigs to music,
there’s something for everyone
By Cecilia Fox
MIAMI COUNTY — From music
and rides to pig racing and human
tractor pulls, there’s something for
everyone at the 2016 Miami County
Fair.
The fair will feature familiar favorite events and a few new entertainment options for fair-goers of all ages.
Returning this year are the Swifty
Swine Racing Pigs, said fair manager
Jill Wright. These speedy piglets will
perform three times a day, rounding
the track at whopping 15 mph.
The Swifty Swine were a fair favorite several years ago, and the board
is happy to bring them back another
year, Wright said.
The popular chainsaw wood carver,
located along the midway, will also
return. Stop by the new exhibit and
check out the art that’s available for
purchase.
New this year are three days of harness racing, Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday, Wright said. The post
time 6:30 p.m. each day.
Music lovers can catch a show on
any day of the fair, with a full afternoon of Gospel music on Sunday,
Aug. 14. The Miami County Fair Gospel Fest kicks off at 1:15 p.m. with the
Cove Spring Church Praise Group.
“And of course there’s the concert,”
Wright said.
Headlining this year’s fair concert
is Chris Janson, with special guest
Carter Winter. Janson is a country
music singer and songwriter, who’s
written hits for big names like Tim
McGraw. His debut album “Buy Me a
Boat” reached platinum status.
Tickets are available for purchase at
(937) 335-7492, online, or in person
at the fair office.
Kids will enjoy the balloon creations
of Lucky the Happy Hobo Clown, who
will perform every afternoon near the
stadium.

Feast at the Miami County Fair
By Sam Wildow
[email protected]
MIAMI COUNTY — Those with an
appetite will be easy to please at the
2016 Miami County Fair. The fair will
be featuring a host of food for people to
dig into this summer.
“We’ve got a variety,” Miami County
Fair Manager Jill Wright said. “We’ve
got ice cream to Chinese food … deepfried veggies, pizza.”
The fair will also be there to please
with a good tenderloin or a burger, also
french fries, sugar waffles, funnel cakes,
and more.
When asked if the food trucks or
vendors are from the area, Wright said,
“Some (are) local, we have some that
are coming from the Columbus area,
Greenville.”
