The branch librarians model book-sharing techniques for parents during storytimes, so they can incorporate these ideas into storytimes at home. Join us at your local community library for stories, songs, rhymes and fun! Early Literacy Skills that every child learns before reading: • LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT • BOOK KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION • ALPHABET RECOGNITION • PRINT AWARENESS • PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS • EARLY WRITING Early Literacy Spotlight: LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT One of the most important parts of language development is the concept of narrative skills. Narrative skills is an understanding that stories have a beginning, middle and end which describe a conflict or situation that is resolved by the end of the story. Reading progressive stories is helpful for this – ones that repeat phrases or concepts and then adds more phrases or concepts to it as the story goes along. Ask questions as you read the story, such as - what happened? What do you think will happen next? At the end of the story ask your child to retell the story. Vocabulary is another important aspect of Language Development. Children's books are excellent for learning new vocabulary. Try to fill your child's life with rich vocabulary by taking the opportunity to point out new words in every situation. When you are reading with your child and encounter a word that they don't understand, be sure to pause and explain it to them. These books are good for practicing LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT.
