NEW CASTLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND
NEW CASTLE RECREATION & PARKS – SPRING TRIP
“On the Street Where Josiah Lived…and Beyond”
Thursday, May 28, 2015
Today we’re returning to Historic Huguenot Street (HHS) in New Paltz. Our last visit was in 2004. We’re tying
our 2 venues together with Col. Josiah Hasbrouck. Josiah was born in one of the historic stone houses, built by
his Huguenot grandfather, Jacob, in 1722. After serving in the Revolutionary War and then as a Rep. to Congress under both Jefferson and Monroe, Josiah returned to the Hudson River Valley and built the 1,000 acre
gentleman’s farm, “Locust Lawn”, in Gardiner in 1814.
We will have a guided tour of 3 properties at HHS, including the Hasbrouck House, followed by a served luncheon right down the street at The Gilded Otter. Following lunch we will have a guided tour of Locust Lawn. This
property is only open to visitors on a reservation basis. It’s a virtual time capsule of the Federal Period and was
in the Hasbrouck family until 1958, when it was donated by Josiah’s great-great granddaughter, Annette
Young, to HHS. And guess what? Annette was the founder of the Locust Grove Estate. The house was transferred to Locust Grove in 2010, reuniting two family properties for the first time in more than 50 years. If this all
sounds a bit confusing, then you simply MUST join us when we put the puzzle together on May 28.
Date: Thursday, May 28, 2015 – Registration accepted after March 16, 2015
Cost: $60 pp (all incl.) – Checks payable to Senior Activity Group. Mail to:
New Castle Recreation & Parks, 200 S. Greeley Ave., Chappaqua, NY 10514 before 5/11
Depart: 8:30AM sharp from New Castle Town Hall in Chappaqua via motorcoach
Return: Approximately 5:00PM
