Please remember that unless you are personally accompanying a resident off the home area, and back onto it, then they should not be allowed off the home area for any reason. If you are unsure then please ask any of the nursing or PSW staff for clarification. The well-being and safety of all residents is a priority at peopleCare and we thank everyone for their continued cooperation! April Birthdays Those born between the 1st and the 20th of April are Aries, the Ram. Rams are adventurous go-getters and full of enthusiasm, charm, and energy. They make dynamic pioneers and adventurers—undeterred when the going gets rough. Those born from the 20th to the 31st in April have the star sign of the Bull of Taurus. Bulls show steady, dogged persistence in achieving their goals. Once goals are reached, they enjoy being rewarded, especially with beauty and peace at home. In Memory Of Matthew S. Helmut S. Pana K. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends "He spoke well who said that graves are the footprints of angels.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow April 2015 Quality Initiatives Dale Shantz: “Last month I started to report on our quality improvements. There are a few things we have done at A.R. Goudie to improve the quality of life for the residents. To enhance the dining experience, we are using placemats for breakfast and lunch and putting table cloths on the tables at dinner. We believe this will make dining more of a pleasure. The staff did a small experiment for a week to trial our plan. The tablecloths reduced the noise of cutlery and dishes considerably. The residents were more aware of the tablecloths and commented that they added some colour to the room. Moving forward we will be starting this plan on March 30. We have added Wendy Williams who is a nurse from Unit one, to our leadership team for six months. Wendy will be working as the Director of Resident Quality Outcomes. This role is important as she will capture all the needs of each resident and work to identify residents who qualify for Restorative measures. Wendy is a critical part of the leadership team as her work will influence funding. If you as residents or family have ideas for quality initiatives, please speak to a member of our leadership team. We welcome your input.” Bed Safety Program PeopleCare is doing an update on bed safety. Experience and research has convinced us that the risks related to the use of bedrails in long term care setting far outweigh the benefits. We have had homes that have experienced these risks first hand. It is now our responsibility to ensure resident safety by eliminating side rail usage in our homes. Each home over the next 6 months will complete individualized assessments from the multidisciplinary team including nursing, physiotherapy and other team members as appropriate. We are communicating the outcome of individual assessments to residents and Substitute decision makers prior to any changes to the plan of care. As the Director of Clinical Services, I have requested to be invited to each homes Resident and Family council meetings to provide information. A Brochure which includes statistics, information on risks and benefits as well as alternatives will be made available to everyone. If you have any questions regarding the initiative please contact peopleCare’s Director of Clinical Services: Andrea Brissette RPN [email protected] April 2015 April 2015 Message from the Executive Director hhhy222222 0152015 From The Desk of Dale There are signs of spring everywhere. Some people say they know spring is coming when the robins return. Others say spring has arrived when they see the tulip and daffodil shoots coming up through the ground. I always think that the first garage sale is a true sign of spring. Garage sales help us clean out the things we no longer use or need and help raise a little money so we can buy more things we will sell at next year’s garage sale. This leads me to our plan to raise money for some improvements for the Unit One home area. Our Behaviour Support Ontario Team (BSO) has a goal to enhance the home area. We would like to raise some funds to purchase some bright artwork, paint the doll nursery, develop some interactive centers to provide the residents living in that home area with a more stimulating and enjoyable environment. The Resident Council and the Family Council have been asked to help us with fundraising to help the (BSO) accomplish their goal. As we set out to do some fundraising, we ask for your support and contributions. The old rotting willow tree has been removed from the west side of the property. While the willow tree was old and a part of the history of A.R.Goudie , it was rotting and was in danger of falling and causing damage to neighbouring property. We are also going to have the flowering crab apple trees pruned in the area around the front parking lot. They are overgrown and a good pruning will prolong their life and restore their beauty. Have a wonderful April and get out and enjoy whatever days of sun and warmth you can capture. Dale Shantz Executive Director April 2015 Chaplain’s Chat The Rainbow of Spring With the winter, and its white colour of snow behind us we now make the transition through to the colours of spring and then summer. The world is poetry by itself speaking to us with colour and fragrance. Each season of our world has its own unique set of colours and now we get to see the world come alive with the many beautiful colours of spring. Often in this time of year we see the colours of spring in the rainbow, which is high up in the sky and just beyond our reach and reminds us of the majesty of God throughout creation. Colours can also influence our emotions, our actions and how we respond to certain situations. What do the spring colours say to us? Red – shows passion and warning Orange – shows joy and morning Yellow – shows sunshine and honour Green – shows safe and life Blue – shows wisdom and confidence Purple – shows ambition and independence Pink – shows love and romance These colours all twist together speaking to us about the beauty of life - creating a rainbow for your life that allows our faith to be nourished and grow into blessings for yourself and others. As Easter comes in early April let’s not lose sight of the majesty of God displayed in the power and glory of the resurrection. This one event allows all creation including humanity to live the colours of the rainbow in its fullest. Let’s share some of the rainbow of the spring with those around us.
