From the President
DRCA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW
I am very excited for the arrival of the 2016 New
Year! In the new year, we welcome residents
to the Sanctuary community as we progress
towards the build-out of almost 20,000 homes
with over 55,000 residents. We should also see
continued development in both the Desert Ridge
Commercial Core and Bio-Medical interests. This

will also be the year that we present the proposed
Desert Ridge Community Association Strategic
Community Plan (SCP) to the community residents via a Town Hall
Community Meeting establishing the future blueprint of Desert Ridge
for years to come.
This year also marks the 21st anniversary since the first home closed
in the 4th quarter of 1996. Desert Ridge has come a very long way
during the past 20 years!!! There is no better way to welcome the
new year than reflecting on the 2015 Desert Ridge Community
Association achievements and accomplishments.

WHERE DID 2015 GO?

With everything
happening around
Desert Ridge time just
seems to fly. And 2016
is looking even more
exciting. That is why
you are going to see us
changing.
Desert Ridge is growing. We have new
neighbors moving in daily at the Sanctuary,
Villages at Aviano, and the new apartment
complex at 56 North.
Besides new neighbors, North Phoenix is
becoming an epicenter for entertainment
with new exhibitions at the MIM, golf
tournaments, car shows, horse shows, and

college football galore—something for
everyone.
And our commerce corridor expected growth
with Mayo Clinic expanding their radiology
department, ASU planning to construct a
research facility next to the Mayo Clinic and
American Express adding more jobs.
Yes, our world up here is changing. And
we on the Communications Committee
are planning changes to keep pace to
keep you informed.
For 2016, we are adjusting our Desert Ridge
Lifestyles magazine to more closely align
with events.
Our community website will be upgraded.
Our vision on the Communications Committee
is to make DesertRidgeLifestyles.com the
hub of community communications. Our
goal is to provide real time information,
links to services, inbound and outbound
communications. With a growing community we need to scale the communications
network to best serve the changing needs of
our community. And that’s what our 2016’s
plan is to do.
So stay tuned, hit us often, give us feedback
and best of all enjoy every minute of the

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Nov. 17, 2015 –
Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector
Car Auctions®, will host a nine-day celebration
of the company’s 45th anniversary in Scottsdale,
Ariz., from Jan. 23-31, 2016, at WestWorld of
Scottsdale. As the barometer of the collector
car market in 2016, Barrett-Jackson is filling its
docket with more than 1,500 rare and collectible
vehicles. Two exceptional collectibles crossing
the block include a 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26
Worblaufen Cabriolet and Boyd Coddington’s
“The French Connection,” a 1938 Coddington
V12 HEMI.
“Our 2016 Scottsdale auction is particularly
meaningful because it celebrates our 45th
anniversary,” said Craig Jackson, chairman

auction with one auction and a few select cars.
More than four decades later, Barrett-Jackson
has become the premier collector car auction
company for enthusiasts around the world. Of
course, our 45th anniversary is as much about
our future as our past and that’s why we continue
to bring new assets to our events, such as the
Experts’ Symposiums.”
The 45th Anniversary Scottsdale Auction will
include a host of exciting activities, events
and exhibits over the week. Kicking off the
week will be the Cox Family Value Day on
Saturday, January 23, with free admission for
children under 12. The Opening Night Gala, a
renowned event held at each of Barrett-Jackson’s
four annual auctions, will be on the evening
of the 25th. Registered bidders, consignors
and sponsors receive invitations to the gala.
Throughout the nine-day auction, fans can
participate in the Ride ’N Drives and Thrill
Rides with Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge, as well
as shop the vendor marketplace and enjoy live
music on select evenings.
New to the 45th Anniversary Scottsdale
Auction will be the Experts’ Symposiums held
throughout the week. Here, enthusiasts can get
an idea about what to look for when buying a car
and hear from Barrett-Jackson’s team of experts.
“This 45th anniversary celebration will represent
the ultimate automotive lifestyle experience and
the most incredible environment of its kind,”
said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson.
“The amazing docket we are building for the
45th anniversary will be a milestone in BarrettJackson history.”
Representing the classic cars that Barrett-Jackson
began selling 45 years ago, a pristine 1947
Talbot-Lago T-26 Worblaufen Cabriolet will be
one of the featured consignments in Scottsdale.
This is one of three Talbot-Lago T-26 Cabriolets
built by the famous Carrosserie Worblaufen of
Switzerland. This car is being offered for sale for
the first time in 24 years.

45th Anniversary Scottsdale Auction is the
coveted 1938 Coddington V12 HEMI, “The
French Connection.” Representing a modern
day interpretation of the prewar cars that BarrettJackson was built on, this one-off, custom-made
car looks similar to a 1937 Delahaye and was
Boyd Coddington’s last build before he passed
away. As this car is Boyd’s last vision for a
car – his final ride – it comes with a Letter of
Authenticity from his wife, Jo Coddington.

The Legacy of Stradivarius
comes to life as never before at the musical instrument museum
On display for the first and only time in the US
Opening January 16, as part of its five-year
anniversary celebration, the Musical
Instrument Museum (MIM) will bring to
Arizona Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy
of the Greatest Violin Maker. Violins, an
internationally beloved instrument, will
be the star of this new exhibition, which
showcases 10 exceptional historic and
modern examples from the string family,
including a 1728 Stradivarius violin on public
display for the first time in the United States.
On view only at MIM, this one-of-a-kind
exhibition introduces the story of how early
violin makers from the modest Italian city
of Cremona shaped music from the 16th
century onward. These timeless masterpieces
were handcrafted by master luthiers,
including Andrea Amati, the founding father
of the violin; the rogue genius Guarneri del
Gesù; and the master himself—Antonio
Stradivari. The exhibition includes several
modern-day masterworks that demonstrate
the continuing influence of early masters.

with Cremona-based institutions Museo
del Violino and the Friends of Stradivari.
“Since its inception, MIM has collaborated
with prestigious national and international
institutions that share a similar vision,”

great privilege to bring this extraordinary
exhibition to Arizona, allowing us to share
these remarkable instruments with guests
from around the world.”

June 5, 2016, with special opening weekend
activities taking place January 16 and 17. To
commemorate the exhibition, MIM will host
concerts featuring some of the world’s most
talented violinists—compelling virtuosa
Rachel Barton Pine, foremost jazz violinist
of her generation Regina Carter, champion
of American music Mark O’Connor, and
the incomparable Midori. The concert series
will conclude with treasured instruments of
the Valley brought to life by members of the
exceptionally talented ASU String Faculty.
As a finale to this special exhibition, MIM
will have an “Experience Italy” weekend
June 4 and 5 to celebrate Italian music
and culture.

Art Contest Awards Presentation Phoenix Area Schools
Allows spectators to learn about the history of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse
Show, the Arabian horse and what it takes to compete at this prestigious
event. The tour will last about an hour and will allow you to meet some of
these amazing competitors and their owners.
Four Natural Aids to Train - Robert Leary
Bob is currently the Head Coach and founder for Arizona State University’s
Western Equestrian team and has been one of the leading instructors
at Scottsdale Community College’s Equine program. He has developed
programs for Natural Trail Competitions challenging all phases of trail riding. He
teaches riders how to utilize the four natural aids to properly train and control
a horse in order to maximize the desired response. His methods place you in
control and make it fun to ride with more self-assurance. Bob will teach you
how to teach your horse to perform at its best, raise your level of confidence
and make you a partner with the horse. His methods will help you develop
your skills to be a safer and more competent rider.
Children and young adults will have an opportunity to meet an Arabian Horse
up close and personal. The horses will be dressed in their Native Costumes
and spectators will be able to sit on the horse and have their photo taken.
The meet a horse event is free with admission to the grounds.

The Event
The Celebration of Fine Art is where art
lovers and artists connect. This juried,
invitational show and art sale features more
than 40,000 square feet of working studios
and works of art by 100 renowned and
emerging artists from across the country.
During the 10-week event, visitors from
around the globe will gather to admire
and acquire an unsurpassed selection of
artworks in all mediums and styles from

Fine Art will open in Scottsdale, AZ on
January 16 through March 27, 2016, with
100 working artists in their studios creating

IS THE PLACE TO BE IN EARLY FEBRUARY
The 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open
Presented by The Ak-Chin Indian Community
returns to Scottsdale February 1-7 for a week of
fun-filled excitement and outstanding athletic
competition. Each year, more than 500,000 people
converge on the Valley of the Sun from all over
the globe to see the PGA TOUR’s best tee it up at
TPC Scottsdale for their share of the $6.3 million
purse. And while the winner’s cut will be hefty, it
pales in comparison to the extraordinary charitable
contributions of The Thunderbirds. As the host,
The Thunderbirds donated a record-breaking $9
million dollars just last year alone, and an amazing
$102 million since the first tournament in 1932.
Each year, The Thunderbirds strive to improve the
tournament in new and exciting ways. Last year,
the civic organization added the 16th hole loge
suites to an already expansive construction project,
giving patrons who ponied up a pretty penny an
upgraded 20-foot by 20-foot loge overlooking the
action on 16, as well as Hole 15’s island green. This
year, the Corporate Village tents will be removed
to make way for the Bay Club, an upscale, luxury
hospitality venue that will feature formal wait
staffs, an upscale lounge area and furnishings
that resemble a five-star resort. Overlooking
the 17th fairway and green, the Bay Club offers
fantastic views of this drivable par 4, along with
a viewing area to catch the action on hole 10.
Bay Club guests also have access to the popular
Greenskeeper venue.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open golf
tournament will be played Thursday-Sunday (Feb.
4-7), but there will still be plenty of things to see
and do at TPC Scottsdale all week long. Thanks
to Ford, the official car sponsor of the Waste
Management Phoenix Open, all fans get in free for
practice rounds and the Coors Light Pro-Am on
Monday, Feb 1. Free admission continues through
Tuesday.
Tuesday, Feb. 2 will feature the R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family
Foundation Dream Day activities located across
the street at TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course
practice range. The festivities include a junior
clinic sponsored by PING, motivational speeches
from PGA TOUR professionals and a trick-shot
golf show. Additionally, the Outfront Media
Special Olympics Open will take place on Tuesday
at TPC Scottsdale’s putting green, showcasing
Special Olympian athletes, celebrities, sports stars
and business leaders from the community.
Wednesday Feb. 3 brings the ever-popular Annexus
Pro-Am to TPC Scottsdale where fans can catch
a glimpse of celebrities, rock stars, professional
athletes, coaches and community leaders playing
with the TOUR pros. Fans are encouraged to stick
around at the 16th hole for the Phoenix Suns
Charities Shot at Glory. Past contestants of this
unique closest-to-the-pin contest include Arizona
Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, country music
star, Dierks Bentley, 13-time MLB All-Star Ken
Griffey Jr., Ohio State University head football
coach, Urban Meyer, and rock star Alice Cooper.
Last year former Heisman Trophy winner Tim
Tebow took home the winning honors. The
Thunderbirds award more than $100,000 to the
charities chosen by each competitor, plus, if a
participant makes a hole-in-one, $500,000 will
be given to the participant with an additional
$500,000 to a charity of their choice. If no one is
so lucky, $40,000 will be donated to the charity of
the winning participant’s choice, $25,000 to the
second-place finisher and $15,000 to the thirdplace finisher.
Wednesday is also the first night of the Coors Light
Birds Nest, a four-night music extravaganza located
inside an enormous tent across the street from the
Waste Management Phoenix Open. The Birds
Nest, with its great music, beautiful patrons and
enthusiastic partying, has earned near legendary
status on the PGA TOUR offering a show totally
unlike anything associated with professional
golf. Wednesday kicks off with country music
powerhouse, Rascal Flatts. The modern-country
group from Ohio is the most decorated country
group of the past decade with 15 No. 1 singles
including “These Days,” “Bless the Broken Road,”
and “What Hurts the Most.”
Thursday, Feb. 4 is the first round of tournament
play followed by a performance from Phoenix
native Dierks Bentley at the Birds Nest. Bentley
first gained frame from his self-titled debut album
in 2003 with the album’s single, “What Was I
Thinkin’?” topping the country charts. His 2005
album, Modern Day Drifter, was also certified
platinum, and the same year, Bentley became the
youngest member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Second round action continues on Friday, with
the Birds Nest marquee featuring singer/songwriter
Robin Thicke, known for his sixth studio album
Blurred Lines, which took the pop charts by storm
in 2013.
On Saturday, February 6, the tournament invites
everyone to participate in the sixth annual
GREEN OUT. Players and fans are encouraged
to wear green to showcase their support for the
environment, the community and all that Waste
Management is doing to solidify the tournaments
status as not only the greenest event on the
PGA TOUR, but also the most charitable. For
every person who wears green on Saturday, The
Thunderbirds will donate “green” to three charities
including Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s
“Change the Course,” Arizona Recycling
Coalition and the Arizona Chapter of Solid Waste
Association of North America (AZ SWANA).
After the round, Dutch DJ Tiësto will bring his
GRAMMY-award-winning performance to the
Coors Light Birds nest for the final performance of
the tournament.
With the conclusion of the final round on Super
Bowl Sunday, a new champion will be crowned
when he hoists the Crystal Thunderbird Trophy
on the 18th green, but the Waste Management
Phoenix Open doesn’t quite end with the final
putt. The Post Open Pro-Am will be held the
Monday following Sunday’s round offering players
one final chance to live out their PGA TOUR
fantasies.
Whether you’re a golf fanatic, prolific partier or
concert connoisseur, the Waste Management
Phoenix Open has something for everyone and is
definitely the place to be in early February.

without working smoke detectors. Smoke
detector failures usually result from missing,
disconnected or dead batteries. A monitored
smoke detector is typically hardwired to the
alarm box, has continuous power, and is
ideal to have in your home. However, if you
can’t have hardwired units, make sure that
you have working battery-operated smoke
detectors with good batteries.

Fire is not the only seasonally high
household danger; Carbon Monoxide
death rates also increase during the winter
months. Carbon Monoxide is a byproduct
of incomplete combustion. The gas can
come from a stove, water heater, furnace,
fireplace, etc. Because Carbon Monoxide
is odorless and tasteless, it can poison you
before you even know it’s there. A Carbon
Monoxide detector can sound an audible
alarm, possibly saving you or a loved one.
Like smoke detectors, if you don’t have a
hardwired unit, make sure you have good
batteries in your Carbon Monoxide detector.

community

Did you know that Desert Ridge
has become one of the premier
communities in Phoenix.
We have a fantastic location, incredible
recreational facilities, great schools and
a crime rate that’s less than half of the
Phoenix average. Our residents are
outgoing, engaged and some of the nicest
people you’ll ever meet. All of these
factors contribute to a rich, high quality
of life. We’ve certainly been blessed
and it’s important for each of us to help
maintain our beautiful community.
Although we’ve made real progress,
one area that still needs improvement
is the amount of pet waste found
throughout our parks, washes and
common areas. Not only is it
unsightly, but pet waste is also a
biohazard. It contains E. coli bacteria,
salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis,
roundworms, gastroenteritis, giardiasis,
cryptosporidiosis and even tuberculosis.
Simply put, pet waste is a serious health
risk for everyone in Desert Ridge,
especially our children who play outside
and are at the highest risk for infection
from these bacteria and parasites.
Always clean up after your pet by bagging
and placing your pet’s waste in one of
the 42 pet stations located throughout
the community. Employees from AAA
Landscaping empty these containers
every few days and do a terrific job, but
they won’t work if they are not used.
Failure to clean up after your pet is
actually against the law and violates
Phoenix Solid Waste Ordinance 27-12.
Violation of this ordinance is a Class 1
misdemeanor and is subject to a civil
sanction of $100 to $2,500.

Compliance has been out doing tours of
the view fencing throughout Desert Ridge
and have been noticing a lot of unapproved
lighting strung on the top of view fencing
and along patios and gazebos. Lighting that
is strung on a string such as holiday lighting,
which may have any color bulb is not
permitted unless approved by the DRC.
All lighting intended by the manufacturer
to be a permanent fixture on a Dwelling
Unit or a permanent part of the landscape
on a Lot is subject to the architectural
application process, including prior written
approval before any use or installation,
whether or not such lighting is made a
permanent fixture or part of the landscaping.
All other lighting, in good form, shall
be considered holiday lighting and subject
to the guidelines. Holiday lighting should
not become a nuisance to neighbors. Holiday
lighting/ decorations that directly correspond
to specific and generally recognized events
may be displayed for a period of seven (7)
days preceding the specific calendar holiday
and must be removed within three (3)
days following the said holiday. The only
exception is holiday lighting/ decorations
for the holidays that fall in the month of
December. As to such holidays, lighting and
decorations otherwise complying herewith
may be put up as early as the immediately
preceding Thanksgiving holiday and must
be removed no later than January 7 of the
immediately following January. Furthermore,
no holiday lighting/ decorations can be placed
by Owners on Common Areas and electricity
for such holiday lighting/ decorations must be
provided from the Dwelling Unit/ Lot and may
not derived from any Common Area facility.
Exterior lighting used for security, landscaping
or building illumination, game or sport lighting
or area illumination must be shielded or
filtered to meet the City of Phoenix Dark Sky
Ordinance. All exterior lighting design must
be approved by the DRC. In no event is the
wattage to exceed 60 watts for incandescent, or
fluorescent of equivalent brightness.

KEEPING UP WITH PVCC

PVCC HONORS VETERANS
PVCC’s new Veterans Services office was
unveiled recently at an Open House for
campus and community members. Those in
attendance included MCCCD Governing
Board members Mr. John Heep, Mr. Dana
Saar, and Desert Ridge resident Ms. Johanna
Haver, who represents District 3.
Attendees toured the new space, a comfortable, welcoming area where student Veterans
can study, socialize, and access Veteran-specific
resources. The area is ideal for study sessions,
guest speakers and events of
interest to student Veterans
and their dependents.
PVCC President Paul Dale
welcomed guests and said
of the new facility, “We
want to wear this place
out, and make it a hub of
activity.”
Added student Veteran
Dustin Logan, “This is a space where we can
be with fellow veterans, and where we can
have study groups and work with one another.
It’s a place where we can be ourselves.”
The event also honored Major General
Carl Schneider (USAF Ret.), who served
more than 30 years in the Air Force as a
commander and pilot. Since retirement,
he has volunteered his time to PVCC staff,
mentored students, and provided his personal
television and library collection for our
Veteran students.
PVCC is not only recognized as a Military
Friendly School by G.I. Jobs Magazine, but
was also recently honored as a Top School
in the Military Advanced Education &
Transition (MAET) Guide to Colleges and
Universities research study.

transformed into “STE(A)M City,” with
featured destinations at art, music, math,
business/IT, geology, physics, engineering,
chemistry, biology, nursing, paramedicine
and dietary technology program areas.
Highlights include: a ball-shooting robot;
pizza ordering app; the neurobiology of
music; DNA ID kit; rocket launching;
digital music; and more!
