Director Report Royal Oak Public Library Annual Report 2006-2007 2006-2007 Royal Oak Public Library Board of Trustees Nancy Hollyer, President The Royal Oak Public Library has operated in its renovated facility for a full year; it is operating now with a dedicated library fund that provides operational expenses as well as debt retirement. Appreciation by the taxpayers for improved Library facilities and services is demonstrated by dramatic increases in utilization. In 2007, lending transactions increased by 44% over transactions in 2005 and by 52% over 1998; the number of visitors to the Library increased by 27% over visits in 2005. At 24,715 visitors per year, the Library is bringing over 1,000 visitors per day to downtown Royal Oak. Royal Oak, MI 48067 248.246.3700 www.ropl.org Annual Report July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007 Program Highlights Library Revenues • Partnerships with the Zoo, Beaumont Hospital, Wayne State University, Royal Oak Public Schools, Kiwanis, Stagecrafters, Royal Oak Community Coalition, OUR Credit Union and Rotary bring improved collections and innovative, exciting programs to the community. • Partnership with the Royal Oak Arts Council has resulted in a standing venue for area artists to display their work both in the display cases at the entrance to the Library and on the walls of the newly renovated Friends Auditorium. • A commitment to the classics has inspired the Library Board to direct that the long held Royal Oak Public Library Levy Fund be used to purchase fresh new copies of classical works for young and old in the lending collections. • Use of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Michigan Center for the Book and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation extends the capability of the Library Fund to provide the extras such as health information programming, author visits, the support of the Library’s first ever Writer in Residence, Cindy LaFerle, and an extension of Library computer training capability. • The Library provided full services to Madison Heights residents and welcomed some Madison Heights employees while that library was closed for renovation. 2004-2005 2005-2006 2006-2007 Library Millage $1,914,463.00 $2,006,346.00 $2,118,234.00 Penal Fines $89,804.00 $80,270.00 $93,951.00 State Aid $27,323.00 $49,803.00 $46,547.00 Fines, Fees, Misc. $41,212.00 $17,846.00 $48,840.00 AV Rental $14,274.00 Grants/Gifts $33,743.00 $4,863.00 $6,619.00 Interest $40,613.00 $91,894.00 $68,625.00 Pleasant Ridge $18,152.00 Operational Improvements • Added free wireless to wired internet access inside and outside in the Library plaza for users with their own laptops. • Added downloadable audio books direct to home computers, popular especially for daily commutes and exercise routines as well as occasional long road trips. • Added downloadable video programming, accessible to users direct to their home computers. • Added Great Courses, the popular “high-brow” lecture series on CD. • Added the computer aide position to assist users of the computer labs. • Website added online program registration and highlights online resources.
