2015 President’s Report
M
aryland Holstein has had another outstanding year at local, state
and national shows. We are proud of our exhibitors and the great
animals that are in the spotlight. Junior members continue to shine in
the showring and at other junior competitions. We congratulate all our
winners.
Frederick County did an outstanding job hosting the state convention
in March 2015 at the Libertytown Fire Hall and the sale at the Frederick
Fairgrounds. We appreciate that the Eastern Shore Holstein members
agreed to host the 2016 convention and sale. It is always nice to visit
another area of the state and visit with old friends.
A special thank you goes to the Jerry and Barbara Watt family for
hosting the state picnic in July. The event was very enjoyable evening and
a time to bring the membership together for fun and fellowship.
This has been another difficult year for dairy farmers due to low milk

prices. Hopefully we can all hold on and will soon see changes for the
better.
It has been an honor to serve as president of the Maryland Holstein Association for the last two years.
I would like to express my appreciation to the membership, the board of directors, committee chairmen
and committee members for your time and support. A special thank you to the executive committee, Vice
President Dr. Matt Iager and Secretary-Treasurer Laurie Savage for all their support and dedication to this
organization.
In closing, I ask that the membership continue to give their support to the future leaders of Maryland
Holstein. Though we may be small in numbers, we must continue to stay strong as an organization.

Jones Family Farm
A
mong the open expanses of farmland
in Maryland’s upper eastern shore
lies a collection of buildings from small
calf huts to large, modern free stall
barns that comprise Jones Family Farm.
Inside them, you’ll find a family working
together to carry on the foresight of
their ancestors while embracing modern
practices to support three generations.

The Jones family farm began in 1932 when Lester C Jones Sr. and his father Carlton purchased 18 bred
heifers for their Burlington County, NJ farm. In 1970, under the progressive mindset of Lester Sr. and his son
Bucky, they expanded the operation to 200 head along with tomatoes and sweet corn. As the next generation
became an integral part of the operation, urban pressure and the need to expand forced them to relocate. The
family’s Maryland roots then took hold in 1995 as the now three generation operation moved to Massey and
doubled in size.
Today the herd includes over 2,600 head with 1,220 milking. Cows are milked three times per day in a
double twenty parallel parlor. Current average production is 28,834 pounds of milk, 1038 pounds of Fat and
845 pounds of Protein. Bucky’s three sons: Sean, Andy and David, along with their families, all work together
to be a large part of the farms labor. Sean serves as the farms general manager and his wife, Tammy, handles
the bookkeeping. Andy handles the majority of the breeding and works on chopping during cropping times.
David is the farms mechanic. David’s son, Matthew, as well as Sean and Tammy’s son, Ethan, are now a fulltime part of the operation.
The crop side of the business also continues to expand and currently consist of over 2,000 acres with 1,600
acres of crop land. Most of the cattle forage needs are met with corn silage and small grain double-crop acres.
Energy is grown as corn and barley and some protein needs are met with home-grown roasted soybeans. In
addition to providing for the cattle, the farm has been growing some vegetable crops as well.
The Jones Family Farm registers their herd under the Jook prefix with Holstein USA. They have been
able to market many cattle in the past and look to increase marketing potential in both quality and quantity.
“With the current facility at capacity, there are no near term plans to expand milking cow numbers but rather
increase the value of the cattle being sold annually”, states Sean. Excellent reproduction, a strong replacement

program, an average age of first calving at 22 months, the use of sexed semen, and utilizing genomic data on
the herd have all helped increase genetic gain. In 2009 the herds average TPI was 1563, only 35 points above
breed average, while in 2015 they were 377 points above breed average at 2240. This increase has equated to
higher production and stronger type throughout the herd.
Type has also been improving and the Jones’ have more recently began a more complete classification
program to aid in marketing potential. Included in the herd is a large number of GP, 75 VG cows, and 5 EX
cows. Using as many tools as possible has allowed them to increase the overall value and efficient production
of the herd and in turn has opened more avenues for marketing top animals.
As in most herds some key cow families have contributed heavily to the success of Jones Dairy. While
some of these families have been developed on farm, some key purchases are also helping shape future
generations of the herd on both the maternal and paternal side. Pine-Tree Missy Miranda (VG-86 DOM)
was purchased late in her life but has provided many good offspring to the farm. Miranda is a daughter of
Wesswood HC Rudy Missy (EX 93) and grand dam of popular bull Mogul. A cow that certainly has a major
impact on the breed, Miranda will also be very influential to the Jook herd. Several of her current highest
daughters are in the herd including a Supersire daughter who is the dam of a Leaderwin Muscadet at +2716
GTPI who will be entering the flush program this year.
Another cow family invested in was Clear Echo 822 Ramo 1200 (EX-94 DOM). The first purchase was a
Freddie granddaughter out of an Armstead. She has been the start of several nice lines that have produced
high GTPI animals, which have sold well, produced overseas embryo contracts, and continue to produce some
of the top genetics on the farm. A Mogul daughter from this Freddie currently has 18 offspring in the herd
that average over 2500 GTPI with several over 2600. Clear-Echo Custom 2418 (EX 90) a Larcrest Custom
daughter was the second purchase. Finishing her third lactation she has 23 offspring in the herd. Her Maurice
and Supersire daughters have been the most promising lines with some of the current flush animals being
their daughters. One of note is a Montross from the Supersire with 167 pounds of combined fat and protein
and scheduled to sell in the Fun in the Sun Cancun Edition.
The Maryland Holstein Association is pleased to award the Jones Family Farm with the Outstanding
Maryland Holstein Dairyman award. A tribute not only to their genetic progress but the strong family
commitment to the advancement of the dairy industry through putting ideas into practice before they are
considered as the industry standard. The Jones family, and their continued efforts towards development, are a
model for modern dairies of any size and scale.

2015 Scholarship Winners

Ian Doody
iblings Julia Doody and Ian Doody of Damascus and Ryan
Zimmerman of Littlestown, Pa., are the three recipients of the
2015 Maryland Holstein Scholarship awards. They receive $750
each for this award to apply to their college expenses.
The parents of Julia and Ian are John and Michele Doody also of
Damascus. Both graduated from Damascus High School in 2014,
where they both participated in many school and 4-H activities and
were very involved in their dairy projects. One of the highlights of
their 4-H involvement was that Julia and Ian were both members
of the winning Maryland 4-H Dairy Judging Team that traveled to
Europe to compete internationally. Julia also was the 2012-2013
Maryland dairy princess.
Julia Doody is currently a freshman at Stanford University
in Stanford, Calif., majoring in human biology and minoring in
psychology. After completing college, she hopes to further her
education in medical school to explore fields such as neurology,
neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry and physiatry.
Ian Doody is a freshman attending the University of Maryland
at College Park. He is majoring in animal science/ pre-veterinarian
and hopes to become a large animal veterinarian specializing in
embryo transplant.
Ryan Zimmerman is the son of Kathy Zimmerman and a 2013
graduate of Littlestown Senior High School. Ryan is a sophomore
at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va,., with a major in dairy science.
Ryan has become involved with the VT Dairy Club and Alpha
Gamma Rho and was a member of the 2014 dairy judging team.
Ryan’s future plans are to work for an A.I. breeding company or
become a dairy classifier.
The Maryland Holstein Scholarship is available to students
who plan on attending a two- or four-year college in agriculture or
attend a four-year college in a non-agriculture area of study. They
also are required to have been active with a Holstein dairy project
in the 4-H and FFA program.

Gail Poffenberger Yeiser

and her sister, Linda, were exposed
to their father’s prolific gardening in
addition to their grandparents’ dairy
farms on a constant basis. Paul and
Gladys Poffenberger helped their
daughters gain an appreciation for
production agriculture with “handson” familiarity by means of barn
chores or traveling with Paul to annual
outings at fairs and conferences while,
he was associate dean of the College
of Agriculture at the University of
Rusty Yeiser, Emily Yeiser Stepp, Amy Yeiser Leslie and Gail Yeiser
Maryland.
Gail later strengthened her love for dairy as a result of her 4-H involvement. As her 4-H career began
with traditional home-goods projects, high school and college peers like Donna Myers, Frank Allnut, Dr.
Lee Majeskie, among others re-inspired her into the dairy and animal sciences. According to her sister, the
Myers’ family farm was a strong motivator for Gail to continue with the dairy-related appeal. Gail Yeiser
graduated from the University of Maryland in 1975. She earned her M.S. in Agricultural and Extension
Education in 1982 and worked at the Institute of Applied Agriculture. She currently serves the College of
Agriculture and Natural Resources as assistant to the Dean for Alumni and External Relations.
It is with this motivation that Gail has been a leading voice for agriculture not only in Anne Arundel
County, but also specifically for Maryland’s dairy industry. Gail’s resume is impressive as she embraces
many leadership roles within the state’s agricultural playing field. Some of these organizations include
president of the MAEF (Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation); faculty advisor for the University
of Maryland Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, national agricultural fraternity; UMCP/College of Agriculture
and Natural Resources Ag Alumni Chapter executive secretary position; coordinates the Agriculture
Alumni Awards dinner each spring; and serves as a liaison for the College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources within organizations of the Maryland 4-H Foundation, Maryland Department of Agriculture and
Maryland State Fair.
Gail is most recognizable for her remarkable involvement in the Anne Arundel County Dairy Leasing
Club. As the leader of the club, amidst the selling of the Navy’s herd in the late 90’s, the club could have
easily ceased to exist without Gail’s commitment to keeping the program alive. Approximately 15 dairy
heifers are offered to suburban kids with little to no prior farm or dairy experience to lease each year.
Numerous participants, with guidance from Gail, have gone on to obtain careers in animal science,
dairy or veterinary fields. It was through this program that Gail and her husband Rusty guided their two

daughters, Emily and Amy, later piloting both into dairy related professions.
Further focusing on her work in dairy promotion, Gail and colleague Frank Allnutt executed the
annual display of Holstein cattle during the Maryland State Fair’s “U- Learn” farm display. Gail also
co-chairs the South Central Dairy Princess Committee and continues as a state committee member.
She continues to assist with cattle check-in at the state fair in addition to her prior involvement as the
committee chair for the Maryland Junior Holstein club and is secretary/treasurer for PDCA (Purebred
Dairy Cattle Association). Gail also participates on the Board of Directors of the National Dairy Shrine,
Fort Atkinson, Wis.
Amidst the countless time she spends on the road, Gail’s family is appreciative of her accomplishments
and takes pride in her passion for agriculture. This has been positively translated to her entire family as
they strive to promote agriculture in their lives. Gail’s dedication and devotion to Maryland’s dairy industry
clearly justify her acceptance of the prestigious Maryland Holstein Distinguished Service award.

I
t feels good to be home! Moving back to Maryland to begin a new job, to serve the Maryland dairy industry,
has certainly been exciting and rewarding. It’s also made this year’s Annual a bit more special.
Not only have I had the privilege of compiling numerous accomplishments of our breeders, but I’ve
also been able to commemorate the accomplishments of one of the most important people in my life; my
mom. Mom exemplifies what the Distinguished Service Award represents. She lives and breathes Maryland
agriculture and our whole family is elated that the Maryland Holstein Association has, too, recognized this
dedication. Congratulations Mom! We love you to the moon and back!
Thank you to all who contributed ads, stories, photographs and lists of achievements this year! The Annual
would not be a success without you. Finally, biggest thanks goes to our designer, Renee Norman-Kenny. I
continue to be amazed by her skills and talents and I am so thankful she is willing to share her expertise with
our organization to create such a beautiful publication.
