Nelsonite pool and deck coatings are manufacturered in California. Here you can find some of the most beautiful pools and
decks in the world. This is a simple guide of how to re-coat your pool and deck, and protect your investment. The Nelsonite process
is an easy and affordable way to re-surface any type of pool with high quality products, specially designed for your pool.

The first step in this process is to choose
the right color for you. Remember that Nelsonite
pool coating colors plus the sky above will
determine the final look of your pool. Below are
some samples of how your pool may look with the
different Nelsonite colors applied.
The second step is to estimate the
quantity of coating required for your pool and/or
deck. Measure the length of the pool and multiply
it by the width, and then multiply by an average
depth of 1.6. This will give you the approximate
square footage of your pool. To find out how much
coating you will need, look at our Product Listing
and look for the coverage for each product. If

The third step is where the work starts;
surface preparation and application. For more
detailed instructions about preparations, tools and
application techniques, see your local dealer or
visit our web site.
Surface Preparation:

The surface has to be clean before coating. Grease,
oil, dirt and any inorganic matter such as calcium
deposits have to be removed because they will
interfere with the adhesion of the coating.
Make up a cleaning solution of 1 part water and
1 part muriatic acid. For each gallon of solution,
add 5 ounces of Nelsonite Prep A. Mix well.
Prepare the cleaning solution in a 5 gallon plastic pail.
1. Add 2 gallons of water.
2. Add 2 gallons of muriatic acid. Always add
muriatic acid to the water and not visa versa.
Follow instructons and cautions on the label.
3. Add 10-14 fluid ounces of Nelsonite Prep A. Mix well.
The color of the sky and the surrounding area will determine the finished look of your pool. It is as easy as 1-2-3 to get

CR POOL COATING
Each gallon of cleaning solution will clean about
100-150 square feet. To begin with, the surface
should be slightly damp, divide the area to be
cleaned into 10 foot square sections. Using a
scrubing brush suitable for acid solution, vigorously
scrub each section with the cleaning solution. Rinse
carefully and thoroughly immediately after each
section has been scrubbed. Hold a garden hose with
a jet nozzle close to the surface and rinse each
section by going back and forth in parallel rows.

Waterproofing Concrete & Masonry
Sealer
The deck is an equally important area, so do not
forget to beautify and protect your hardscape
surfaces with Nelsonite's sealers. Solid color low
sheen finishes to high gloss clear finishes can be
achieved with Nelsonite's versatile concrete, stone,
brick and masonry waterproofing deck sealer systems.
Application
All epoxy coatings require an epoxy primer on
uncoated surfaces. When recoating an existing
epoxy coating in good condition, a new coat of
primer may not be necessary. If you want to coat
over a chlorinated rubber coating with an epoxy
coating you can use Propoxy Pool Coating or
prime with Hi-Bild Primer and topcoat with a
solvent base epoxy.

• Provides 4-6 years of service.

After choosing your pool or deck coating, read the
label carefully for specific instructions. Coating a
pool is a straight-forward procedure. Typically, two
people can coat a residential pool in less than two
hours per coat. All Nelsonite pool and deck
coatings can be applied by brush, roller or spray.
Use Solvent 150 for thinning and cleanup when
using rubber base pool coatings or solvent base
epoxy coatings. Use only water for thinning and
cleanup with Speedcote 2000, Propoxy, Hi-Bild
Primer, Deckgard or Cleargard.

HI-BILD PRIMER
POOL
A two-component, high performance waterborne
epoxy primer for concrete and plaster surfaces that can
be applied at wet film thickness levels from 5-10 mils.
• Can be applied as a heavy–bodied, block filler
type of material to smooth out rough and pitted
surfaces or as a conventional primer for smooth
surfaces when thinned with a pint of water.
• Can be used as a barrier coat primer over rubber
base pool coatings, so that you can topcoat with
a solvent base epoxy.
• Can be applied over a damp surface.
• Coverage: 80-175 sq. ft./gal.
49-150 Waterborne Primer - Off White
DECKGARD
Deckgard waterproofing concrete and masonry
sealer is a single-component waterborne acrylic
sealer that forms to a hard, durable low sheen finish. Formulated for use on concrete, and other
porous surfaces. Deckgard features excellent adhesion and is virtually unaffected by intermittent
standing water and pool water chemicals.
• For swimming pool decks, patios, walkways, and
concrete floors.
• A self-priming two-coat system.
• Has a pool deck like appearance.
• Add-A-Grip slip resistant additive can be added
for greater safety in areas where there is danger
of slipping and falling.

DECK
Cleargard waterproofing concrete and masonry sealer
is a single-component, waterborne multi-purpose
clear, low sheen topcoat sealer for concrete, stone,
brick pavers and other masonry surfaces.
• Protects surfaces from efflorescence, water
absorption, spalling and staining.
• Dust, dirt and grime are cleaned easily from surfaces
treated with this product.
• Water clean up.
• Low odor.
• Coverage: 500 sq. ft./gal.
47-423 Clear
CLEARGARD - Epoxy
DECK
Cleargard waterproofing concrete and masonry
sealer is a two-component clear gloss, waterborne
epoxy designed to seal and protect painted and
unpainted concrete and masonry surfacer. Great for
“natural look” concrete water slides and water features
and interior decks where a clear high gloss is desired.
• Provides a high gloss, mar resistant protective
finish.
• It is slightly ambered to give a wet look to concrete.
• Low odor.
• Water cleanup.
• Coverage: 650 sq.ft./gal.

ADD-A-GRIP
POOL AND DECK
Add-A-Grip is a texturing agent for use with
Nelsonite Pool and Deck Coatings. Add-A-Grip
provides a slip resistant surface and greater safety
in coated areas where there is danger from slipping
and falling.
• Can be applied by broadcasting into wet coatings
on first coat and then applying a second coat.

final coat.
• A durable easy on the feet, slip resistant texture.
• Available in 2 lb. Containers.
• 2 lbs. will cover up to 300 square feet of
surface area.
59-192 Slip-Resistant Additive
PREP A
POOL AND DECK
A concentrated waterborne surface cleaner that can
be used alone or mixed with muriatic acid and
water to clean surfaces prior to the coating
procedure. Prep A is biodegradable and contains no
phosphates.
• It cleans the surface of oils, grease, scum, mildew
and other organic matter, which interfere with
the adhesion of coatings.
• It thickens the solution of muriatic acid and
water, thereby making it a more effective cleaning
agent, especially on vertical pool walls.
• It reduces the noxious fumes of muriatic acid.
• Prep A rinses completely from the surface, leaving
no soapy or detergent film.
• 25 ounces of Prep A will make 5 gallons of
cleaning solution.
• Each gallon of cleaning solution will clean 100150 square feet.
