For a curious boy like Jess Hall, growing up in Marshall means trouble when you get caught spying on grown-ups. Adventurous and precocious, Jess is protective of his older brother, Christopher, a mute whom everyone calls Stump. Though their mother has warned them not to snoop, Stump can't help sneaking a look at something he's not supposed to—an act that will have repercussions. It's a wrenching event that thrusts Jess into an adulthood for which he's not prepared. He now knows that a new understanding can bring not only danger and evil—but also the possibility of freedom and deliverance. Winners in each grade receive a prize; the winning coloring contest entries from Grades PreK – 3 are displayed at the library while the winning poster entries from Grades 4 - 8 are displayed at the post office. A Land More Kind Than Home is a haunting tale of courage in the face of cruelty and the power of love to overcome the darkness that lives in us all. (From the publisher.) You can stop by from now through the July 4 holiday and appreciate the creativity of some young artists. The Friends are sponsoring their summer book sale from July 11-30. Be sure you don’t miss out on a lot of great deals on books, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs! Our Friends organization is always looking for new volunteers so why not sign up and become a member? This month’s title: Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. For fans of Sarah Dessen and John Green, this is a breathtaking debut about a couple who fall in love...twice. Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists...until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. Then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant— Reena behind. For more than a decade, Jenna Metcalf has never stopped thinking about her mother, Alice, who mysteriously disappeared in the wake of a tragic accident. Refusing to believe she was abandoned, Jenna searches for her mother regularly online and pores over the pages of Alice’s old journals. After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her. Desperate to find the truth, Jenna enlists two unlikely allies in her quest: Serenity Jones, a psychic who rose to fame finding missing persons, only to later doubt her gifts, and Virgil Stanhope, the jaded private detective who’d originally investigated Alice’s case along with the strange, possibly linked death of one of her colleagues. As the three work together to uncover what happened to Alice, they realize that in asking hard questions, they’ll have to face even harder answers. WV Choice Training After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again? West Virginia's Choice is holding training classes at the Mannington Public Library consisting of First Aid and CPR in order to be hired as Personal Attendant's (Direct Care Worker's) for clients who need in-home assistance. Training classes are scheduled once a month for the rest of the year. Training for this month is scheduled for July 13, 14, 22, and 29 from 9 am -5 pm To sign up for training, call West Virginia's Choice at 304.291.3345 ext. 235 or ask for Cindy.
