Marrackech, de Milan à Kaliningrad, de Bali à Berlin, de New York à Paris en passant par Londres
et Stockholm. Aujourd’hui nous vous emmenons à Kyoto, découvrir l’univers magique des
temples où l’on vénère Boudha et celui non moins mysterieux des Ryokans. Puis nous irons
ensemble à Bali, terre si contrastée où les majestueuses rizières en terrace cotoient le farniente
dans les luxueuses villas d’inspiration marocaine. Bon voyage !
A journey on a new silk road
In recent months a new Silk Road has emerged, the one that drives the precious thread Tendance
Khmere from Phnom Penh to Kyoto, from the chilean vineyards of Casa Lapostolle to Marrackech,
from Milan to Kaliningrad, from Bali to Berlin, from New York to Paris via London and Stockholm.
Today we take you to Japan in Kyoto to discover the magical world of temples where they
venerate Boudha and the one of no less mysterious Ryokans. Then we will go together to Bali, so
contrasting land where the majestic rice fields in terrace are next to lazing about in luxurious villas
of Moroccan inspiration. Bon voyage !

handmade in Cambodia,
when traditional Cambodia meets
contemporary design….
Tendance Khmere is a French company founded in 2002 by Flavien and Songmala Lambert.
Flavien is a French designer originated from Lyon and Songmala was born and raised in Cambodian. She left the country at
the age of 6 and first returned to Cambodia in 1994 after 21 years.
After running a mixte Cambodian and French restaurant in Paris for 7 years, they decided to create Tendance Khmere.
Their main motivation has always been to promote and present Cambodia differently and positively. Everybody has heard
about the Khmer rouge genocide on one hand and the Angkor heritage on the other hand. But who knows about the
traditional Cambodian silk?
Less famous but more respected than Thaï or Indian silk, Khmer silk used to be considered one of the best and most
intricate and delicate in Asia. The advent of the Khmer rouge period destroyed this once prosperous occupation. But now
with the revival of silk making new design has appeared.
In Cambodia, this true silk is a precious gem only used for making clothes during special occasions like weddings, religious
ceremony or a very important event.
Tendance Khmere today is adapting a very old tradition of silk weaving to a new demand for design and decoration.
There are about 10.000 silk weavers in Cambodia and most of them are female. Around 7000 of them live in a small area
roughly 15km square in the province of Takeo.
When the business started, Songmala first of all did work with her own family. But as the activity was growing, she had to
employ more people for weaving and manufacturing finished goods.
Tendance Khmere works nowaday with different weavers from remote villages and also with people from and nearby
Phnom Penh for manufacturing. It may take half day to go to the village to check for the silk. It is always a real adventure.
Tendance Khmere has been contributing for almost 12 years now to increase the daily living of all those people. Some of
them largely improve their daily lives. It can be very simple like buying a fridge, a motorcycle etc…And when you are told
that they can send their children to school or send them to the doctor , then there is no more to say.
