Reprint With Swimming World Magazine's Permission 1963 N.C.A,A. ALL-AMERICA SWIMMING TEAM NAMED G. Robert Mowerson, Chairman, N.C.A.A. All-American Comm. University of Minnesota In selecting the 1963 N.C.A.A. All-America Swimming Team, the Committee made every effort to be fair to all those who had times submitted for consideration. It was f e l t that it was only fair that every finalist at the N.C.A.A. Championships should b e on the team. This meant on the face of things that anyone who had bettered the time of the sixth place m a n would make the All-America. This, however, has not necessarily been the case as performance within a championship is counted more heavily than a performance done in a dual meet where the pressure is not nearly as great. Additionally, the winners of the first two places in the N.C.A.A. Meet. For this reason we are not listing times of the selected m e n because this might cause too many questions as to why a faster time is not listed ahead of the N.C.A.A. winner's time. Again, just about every area of the country is represented on the team, with the Middle-West having a preponderance of those selected. The certificates issued by the All-America Certification Committee to the members of this year's all America will be identical except for the name and the event, and with the further exception the winner of that event in the N.C.A.A. Championship will have his certificate marked "N.C.A.A. Winner". 1 9 6 3 N.C.A.A. ALL-AMERICA SWIMMING TEAM 50 YARD FREE STYLE--Steven J. Jackman, Minnesota, N.C.A.A. Winner; Stephen E. Reprint With Swimming World Magazine's Permission RERYCH, ROBIE... PEEKSKILL M.A. TOP PREPS ALL AMERICANS Lawrenceville, New Jersey-Steve Rerych and Carl Robie each placed first in two individual events to give Peekskill Military Academy four of the five first place mentions in the 1963 Prep School All American Swimming Team. The All American listing compiled by Philip G. Pratt, Coach of the Lawrenceville School, revealed just three schools able to grab off the first place honors. Lawrenceville School had three first place All American and Punahou School rounded out the top spots with two first place times. Peekskill's Rerych was the fastest prep swimmer in the 200 yard freestyle 1:49.4 and the 100 yard freestyle 49.1; teammate Robie claimed his firsts in the 200 yd. individual medley 2:04.0 and 400 .yard freestyle 4:01.7. Peekskill's 200 yard freestyle relay (Steve Rerych, Carl Robie, Ron Wirth and Dick Williams) outswam the nations preps to clock 1:30.-, for the fastest time recorded• Peter Worthen, Lawrenceville, with a 22.2, was the fastest m the 50 yd. freestyle, teammate Phd Butch R1 er scored first in the 100 yd. butterfly with his time of 52.7, and the third Lawrenceville first went to Russ Kingery in the 100 yard backstroke 55.3. Punahou School, Hawaii, had a pair of first place times. Allen Richardson recorded the fastest 100 yard prep breaststroke 1:04.0 and the medley team of Alan Van Etten, Alien Richardson, James Miles, Mike Miles, stroked the 200 yd. medley relay in 1:42.7. 1962 first place winners were unable to successfully retain their rankings, though Steve Rerych, 1962 first place All American in the 400 yard freestyle, outranked Riker in the 200 yard freestyle by 6-tenths of a second, Riker clocking 1:51.0. David Tyler III, Williston, 50 yd. 1962 Freestyle All American first pmce mention slipped to 22.4, well off his 1962 time of 22.0 and barely nosed out Rayner Handley, Pine Crest, 22.5, for 2nd place ranking. Russ Kingery improved his 1962 time by 2.7 seconds in the 200 yard individual medley to a 2:06.2, but was only able to claim the 2nd slot over Ron Wirth, Peekskill. James Miles, Punahoe, 1962 All America 100 yard butterfly kingpin knocked 1.7 seconds of his last year's time to a 53.5 but was still over a second slower than this years best, Butch Riker. Carl Robie's 54.4 claimed the third spot. In the 1O0 yd. freestyle, Dave Tyler III for the second year claimed runnerup spot to the winner, this year . . . Rerych. Patrick MaeLean, St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., ranked third, 50.0. Ron Wirth improved his 1962 time in the 100 yd. backstroke, but Russ Kingery, who was second in '62, improved his even better, and stroked to top honors. Wirth's best was 56.8 followed by Rayner Handley, Pine Crest, 58.1. Carl Robie had little competition for top spot in the 400 yd. freestyle. Pine Crest's Raymond Weeks' 4:08.0 was well off the top time, followed by David Beaty, Lawrenceville, 4:09.5 a n d Tom Haynie, Punahou, son of the ex-Stanford coach, now coaching the Hawaiian prep school. 1 • ' Photos: 1 Peter Worthen 2 Phil Biker 3 Steve Rerych 4 Allen Richardson 5 Carl Robie 6 Rus Kingery Lloyd Rodenbaugh, Wayland Prep, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, trailed Punahou's Richardson for 100 yard breaststroke honors. But after first ,place, California continued to lead the nation, placing 38 individuals, 8 in the medley relays and 9 in the freestyle relays. Illinois placed 22 individuals, and 13 relays, followed by Michigan, 10 individuals, 5 relays, Texas, 8 and 2, Ohio 6 and 2, Florida 6 and 0, New York 6 and 1, Pennsylvania 4-2, Kansas 4, Minn. 3, Washington 3, New Jersey 3, Nebraska, Iowa, Okla., Wisconsin 2 each, Rhode Island, Maryland, Conn., North Carolina, Oregon and Geor~gia 1 each. The fact that only 22 states were able to place men in the High School All America points up the tremendous gap between the West Coast-Mid-west areas, and the rest of the country. The gap can be narrowed only by additional effort and coaching. Swimmers from the leading areas are backed by a tremendous age group program that produces quality as well as depth. Again as last year when Roy Saari dominated the All America selections, one swimmer stands out above the rest. Don Schollander, the 16 year old junior from Santa Clara, set two of the six new National Interscholastic records. His 3:46.4 for the 400 yd. freestyle and 1:44.5 for the 200 yd. freestyle erased marks set in 1961 by Saari. Schollander tied for third in the 100 yd. freestyle 48.9, was third in the 100 yd. backstroke 56.0 and tied for 12th in the 50 yd. freestyle 22.5. He anchored the Santa Clara High School 200 yd. medley relay (Mike Schmidt, Wayne Anderson, Dean Bisterfeldt) to a new national interscholastic mark of 1:40.1. He and his Santa Clara teammates (Bisterfeldt, Schmidt, Jeff Reeder) placed 8th nationally in the 200 yd. freestyle relay. Scott Cordin, senior from Hinsdale, Ill., placed second to Schollander in the 400 yd. freestyle 3:55.1 and the 200 yd. freestyle 1:47.5. Cordin also made 12th place in the 50 yd. freestyle standings. York, Pennsylvania's Bill Groft with a 48.5 for the 100 yd. freestyle laid claim to being the fastest schoolboy sprinter in the nation. This might be challenged by Phil Denkevitz, Baltimore Poly, who took second place listing with a 48.6. Brad Lindeblad, South Broward High, Hollywood, Fla., and Don Schollander tied for the third mention, followed by Thomas Schwartin, Evanston and Dean Willeford, Downey, both 49.0. Denkevitz, who in 1962 missed first place honors in the 50 yard freestyle by a tiny 1-tenth of a second, earned the top spot in 1963 by virtue of his 21.8. Bruce Ball, Nutley, N.J., William Stipek, Tacoma Wilson High, Wash., and Ken Wiebeck, Thurston High, Detroit, all tied for second in 22.1. KERRY O'HARA Bltt SHROUT John Leasure, McKinley High, Canton, Ohio, made good his coach, Ted Branin's forecast that he would be the best in the nation in the 100 yd. backstroke. Leasure moved up from his 1962 5th place ranking to first place in 1963 with a solid 55.0 performance. This time was almost a full second faster than second place Alamo Heights, Texas swimmer, Charles Worrel 55.9, and the pair from Santa Clara, Don Schollander 56.0 and Mike Schmidt 56.1. Kerry O'Hara, Kenmore East, Tonawanda, N.Y. and Kenneth Wiebeck, Thurston, Detroit were their areas best as they recorded the identical times of 56.3. Richard Roth, the talented junior from Atherton, California completely dominated the 200 yd. individual medley. Roth's 2:00.7 not only ripped the national interscholastic record of 2:01.8, but was better than any time in the NCAA Championship for the same event, and would be good for 4th in the 1963 AAU Indoor Championship. Four swimmers were tied in the 2:03's . . . Bob Hopper, Arcadia, Calif., clinched the runnernp All America honor in the medley with a 2:03, just 1-tenth faster than the outstanding Northwest swimmer, Charles Richards, Tacoma Stadium High. Robert Hart, Fresno, Calif., clocked 2:03.6 to nose out for fourth La Crescenta's Buddy Bates, 2:03.7. William Jennison, Cooley High, Detroit, repeated his All America rating from 1962 with a brilliant 52.6 for the 100 yd. butterfly. This time established a new interscholastic record, clipping the old mark of 52.7 set by Fred Schmidt, 1961. Don Schollander 53.1 and his Santa Clara teammate, Dean Bisterfeldt 53.4 ranked 2nd and 3rd in the 100 yd. butterfly, followed by Matt Hand, Hinsdale 53.6, and Don Spencer, Seaholm, Birmingham, Mich., 53.9. As mentioned before, Don Schollander 1:44.5 followed by Scot Cordin 1:47.5 paced the 200 yd. freestyle event. Dean Willeford, Downey, Calif., who shortened his season by playing on the U.S. Pan American Water Polo team, earned third place, 1:47.9, followed by Mike Wall, Blackford, San Jose, Calif., and William Shrout, Brooklyn Tech 1:48.8. Unheralded Russ Webb, Fullerton, Calif., senior, who in 1962 just barely did make All America honors with a last place listing, catapaulted into the 1963 first place spot with a new interscholastic 100 yd. breaststroke mark of 1:01.6, more than 31/z seconds over his previous best. It was very close in the runnerup spots, as six boys clocked in the 1:02's. Hinsdale's Paul Scheerer 1:02,1, Wayne Anderson, Santa Clara, 1:02.3, Kenneth Glasser, Central, Omaha, Iowa, 1:02.7, Richard Roth, Atherton, 1:02.8, Ricky Nesbit, Dallas Highland Park, 1:02.9 and William Powers, Azusa, Calif., 1:02.9 followed in order. San Antonio College. But it was Nort Thornton's Foothill JC that outdistanced all the rest as the Owls from Northern California received 39 All American rankings, followed by Los Angeles Valley 24, Long Beach City College 18, Orange Coast College 18, Fullerton 13, Santa Monica 11, and the others all with less than 10. So strong are the Junior-Colleges in California, that only Flint, Michigan and Worcester, Mass. were able to place in the All American rankings, and then they placed but one swimmer each. The ability of the Junior College swimmers should not be taken lightly, for in three events, the 200 yd. freestyle, 100 yd. breaststroke and 200 yd. breaststroke, the first place rankings would have given these swimmers a first in the NCAA Championships. The 1st place ranking in the 1650 yd. freestyle and the 500 yd. freestyle would have finished at least third in the NCAA Championships. With more and more of the California swimmers turning to JUNIOR COLLEGE before attending a four year school, these All American rankings, and their championships most certainly have a place in the swimming picture in the United States. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the JC swimmers will be in the thick of competition for berths on the 1964 Olympic team. The JC's have the facilities, and the qualified coaches to challenge many of the four year schools. Gary Ilman, only a year out of high school, set a National JC mark of 1:46.0 to claim first place ranking in the 200 yd. freestyle.
