Darkness falls and a hidden side of Port Arthur’s past emerges...
In the silence and soft glow of lantern light, those long-gone seem
very close at hand. Darkened ruins and historic buildings provide a
backdrop for rich stories of strange happenings that baffled convicts,
free people and soldiers, as well as our recent visitors. Ghost Tours
run for approximately 90 minutes, operating nightly. Covering two
kilometres of moderate grade terrain, walking shoes and warm
clothes are recommended.Ask about the After Dark Package
combining the Ghost Tour with a two course meal at Felons Bistro.

OUNG S GRAVE STONE
Visit the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park for a remarkable face to face encounter with Tasmania’s endangered Tasmanian
devil. Learn all about the Tasmanian devil and the fight to save the species. The park, designed by famous international
landscape architect Jon Coe, is the world’s first and Australia’s only Unzoo of the Future, “a place where the public learns about
wild animals, plants and ecosystems through interaction with and immersion in original or recreated habitats”.
You can join one of the many Tasmanian devil, eastern quoll and kangaroo feedings and presentations throughout the day all
within a beautiful parkland setting. Also popular is the Kings of the Wind show, Tasmania’s only free flight bird show. Other
resident wildlife includes wallabies, pademelons, possums, frogmouths, parrots, hawks and a wedge tail eagle.
Ideally located only an hour’s drive from Hobart and 10km from Port Arthur. Open every day between 9am and 5pm.

discover The Convict Trail - more than a day!
The Convict Trail offers the opportunity to explore Tasmania’s convict
heritage in places where the past seems just a clink of chains away.
Convicts could be sent here ‘for the term of their natural lives’… you
won’t need that long to explore the Convict Trail but you will certainly
need more than a day! It takes most people a minimum of four hours to
see Port Arthur Historic Site alone and the Tasman Peninsula is dotted
with ruins that echo the stories of the men who were among the most
hardened of the convicts sent to Tasmania.
The historic, art deco Lufra Hotel has 26 en-suite rooms in double, twin and family styles.

scenery anywhere in Australia. Not surprisingly, the park offers some of the best coastal walks in the country.
Walks
Well developed walking tracks are found throughout the park. Walks vary from pleasant strolls along the beaches and
rocks to longer and more energetic walks. Many walks provide unsurpassed views of the rugged coastal formations.
Walking opportunities range from short strolls and half day walks to 2-3 day overnight walks.
See www.parks.tas.gov.au/natparks/tasman/activities.html for more Tasman Peninsula walking information.
Activities
You can enjoy camping, bushwalking, picnicking, swimming, fishing, diving, kayaking or rock climbing in the Tasman National
Park. Expert tour operators listed in this brochure can provide an unforgettable experience in this magnificent area.
Wildlife
Supporting rich and complex ecosystems, the Tasman National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Seals, penguins,
dolphins and whales can be seen at various times from our charter boat and cruise operators. Some of the best temperate
water diving in the world is available off the Tasman National Park.
Sea birds abound whilst the forest harbours smaller birds such as fairy wrens, scarlet robins, honey eaters and pardalotes.
The park contains a number of nesting raptors including the endangered wedge tailed eagle and sea eagles.
Sorell to Dunalley
Driving from Hobart or from the East Coast, the journey takes you through the busy township of Sorell and south
along the Arthur Highway. Don’t hurry because there is a lot to see and experience on the 1.5 hour journey to the Port
Arthur Historic Site.
Sorell is a regional centre with service facilities, internet cafe and antique shops to browse. Look behind the busy
modern facade and you’ll discover historic buildings with fascinating stories to share. Pick your own fruit or enjoy award
winning wines, coffee and cakes as you pass on through.
Cresting Eaglehawk Spur, take time to pause at the Tasman
to enjoy the sensational views
Seacliff Coast Lookout
across Pirates Bay and towards the lanterns at Cape Hauy.
The Hippolyte Rocks, a local seal haul-out and one of a
small number of islands you’ll see off the coast, can also be
viewed from this stunning vantage point.
Follow Pirates Bay Drive from the Seacliff Coast Lookout to
access the Tessellated Pavement - a natural occurring intertidal rock platform formed by unusual geological conditions
resulting in a rare, tiled rock formation.
Walk the beach, search for shells, go fishing and enjoy
the freedom. At low tide, visit Clyde’s Island, with fossil
cliffs that were of interest to Charles Darwin when visiting
Tasmania in 1836.
Avoiding the often treacherous
sea journey around the peninsula via Storm
Bay, convict-powered carriages were hauled
and pushed from
Taranna to Long
Bay carrying
visitors and
goods safely to
the prison.
Before crossing the Neck, visit the historic Officers Quarters; believed to be the oldest wooden military structure in the
country. Excellent interpretation - Free entry.
Turn left into Blowhole Road to access the eastern end of Pirates Bay, home to the local fishing fleet, recreational
fishing charters and cruise boats. Here you will be able to access the awesome sea-cliff coast where you can
walk along the highest sea-cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere.
View the towering walls of dolerite and delightful marine inhabitants—seals, whales, dolphins and marine birds—up close
from the water by joining a coastal cruise experience or have a sub-marine, diving adventure in the caves and kelp forests
that lie at the foot of the cliffs.
Take a little time to explore Doo Town, an amusing testament to Tassie’s quintessential shack culture, where many of the shacks
have titles such as ‘Gunnadoo’, ‘Xana-Doo’ and ‘Doo-Little’.
Eaglehawk Neck to Port Arthur
Ten minutes further along the Arthur Highway, following the sheltered shores of Eaglehawk and Norfolk Bays, is
Taranna.
As you drive south, you will pass through the small rural villages of Forcett and Copping. If you feel adventurous,
explore the back lanes and by-ways (via C366) and discover picturesque Marion Bay, which boasts pristine surf breaks and
hosts the popular annual music event, the Falls Festival.
Established in 1836, Taranna was a safe shipping port for the convict settlement of Port Arthur. Its jetty was
the starting point for the first passenger-carrying railway in Australia. The old port buildings still exist and have been
continuously occupied since convict days.
Further south you will arrive at Dunalley, a quiet fishing hamlet located on Denison Canal. This man-made
waterway connects the east and western sides of the Forestier and Tasman peninsulas, ensuring safe passage for sea
vessels – essentially a maritime ‘short-cut’ to Hobart.
Taranna offers a range of accommodation options (from budget to heritage) and some unique activities. Don’t miss out
on visiting Taranna’s ‘devilish’ attractions on your way through— an opportunity to get up close and personal with
locals of the small, feathered and furry kind at a conservation park. As equally delightful, try taste testing at the local
chocolate factory and timber museum.
If you are looking for coffee, a meal, fresh fish, or local wines, Dunalley has a range of options and offers great hospitality.
The highway south of Taranna follows the route of the convict railway to Oakwood then on to Port Arthur, passing the
turnoff to idyllic Fortescue Bay which offers pristine camping sites and the opportunity to walk to spectacular Cape
Hauy and Bivouac Bay.
With time to explore the Convict Trail, turn right south of Taranna, and follow the picturesque Loop Road (B37)
through Koonya, Premaydena and Nubeena, (all of which have convict origins) - enjoy a leisurely jaunt through
small rural townships to arrive at Port Arthur from an alternative direction - the time difference being negligible.

More than just a tourist attraction, the Port Arthur Historic Site is an essential heritage experience. It is the best
preserved convict settlement in Australia and among the most significant of the nation’s convict-era sites.
Recently included on the World Heritage List as part of a serial inscription of Australian convict sites, this nineteenth
century convict settlement offers amazing insights into our nation’s past...
‘To Grind Rogues into Honest Men…’ such was the vision for the Port Arthur penal settlement – a bold experiment and
groundbreaking attempt at reform and rehabilitation of the convicts of Van Diemen’s Land.
Along with the Coal Mines, Port Arthur was a key part of the colonial system of convict discipline. Remote, harsh,
with no chance of escape, these were the perfect destinations for hardened, repeat offenders…but Port Arthur was much
more than a prison. As you explore the Site, powerful personal stories of convicts, soldiers, free people and their
families will reveal themselves to you. Port Arthur’s tale is told in many ways. It will stay with you long after you have left.
