CofC were all topics at WPCCC
The January meeting of the Western Pima
County Community Council was held last
Thursday in the Ajo Community Center with a
large crowd on hand.
The featured presentation was a K-9 demonstration by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Other presentations were given by US Border
Patrol, Ajo Unified School District, Pima County
Natural Resources Parks and Recreation, Ajo
District Chamber of Commerce, and the Ajo
Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
WPCCC chair Lil Jones read a note from county representative Deb Miller, who was unable to
attend, regarding an investigation by Pima County
Department of Environmental Quality into a noise
and odor complaint for the diesel generator at the
55 Sahuaro government housing complex. Several
deficiencies were recorded during the inspection
– primarily record-keeping violations and a lack
of visible emissions checks – and Department of
Homeland Security has been issued an Opportunity
to Correct.
Sgt. Kori Tevere of PCSD Ajo District gave a
brief update. A new deputy will be coming to Ajo
in “a month or so” who is a lateral transfer from
Pinal County Sheriff’s Department. Another deputy, who will graduate from the law enforcement
academy in February, will be assigned to Ajo in
mid-May upon completion of his field training.
Large local businesses and organizations are
being asked to send or bring floor plan blueprints
of their facilities to the Ajo District office on Well
Road. Tevere said the floor plans are needed to
provide entry and exit information for deputies,
firefighters, and ambulance personnel during
emergencies.
The K-9 demonstration will be the topic of a
full-length article in an upcoming issue.
Roman Rubio, USBP agent and community liaison, talked about a multi-agency citizens academy
set to begin this Thursday at the Border Patrol’s
Ajo Station. He said there is still time to register
for the course, which will be held on six consecutive Thursdays. Attendees must be 18 or older and
willing to submit to a background check. For more

AUSD principal Lauren Carriere gave a report
on school news. She said volunteers are always
welcome at the school and anyone interested may
call the school office at 387-7601 to get started.
Carriere said local sheriff’s department personnel
are “so helpful” and all the school’s partnerships
are important.
Carriere talked about an increase in the student
body this year, two new teachers, MAP testing, the
new marquee, grant projects that six teachers are
involved with, and field trips to Organ Pipe Cactus
National Monument. Her talk will be the topic of a
future article.
Jones read a report from Desert Senita
Community Health Center. Two doctors and one
nurse practitioner are now seeing patients at the
health center. Outreach staff that helps at the
Edible Ajo School Yard garden recently received
approval to use produce from the garden in the
school cafeteria.
Merrill Meadows of Pima County Natural
Resources, Parks and Recreation gave a brief review of fitness classes offered. She said an additional class with nutrition and wellness components will be starting soon. Basketball season is
past the midway mark with boys and girls teams
playing well. The Walker Park playground surface
has had three repair attempts. Much of the problem
had to do with a failed head-impact test that uses
a tall tripod and a dropped object. After the third
repair, with construction fencing still in place,
two people apparently climbed the fence and left
footprints in the new surface before it could cure.
Meadows said any information about possible culprits would be helpful.
CofC director Andrew Sisk said the mixer in
December set a record for attendance and will be
used as a model for the future. His report will be
the topic of a future article.
Nina Sajovec of the Ajo CSA talked about
changes with the farmers market and upcoming
workshops open to the public. Her report is the
topic of a separate article.
Jose Castillo announced that the Keep Kids on
Track-sponsored mariachis will perform in Dicus
Auditorium on January 30 at 1 p.m., followed by
a barbacoa at the parish hall behind the Catholic
Church to raise funds for a centennial celebration
in November.
Following the resignation of George Gradillas as constable on
January 1, the Pima County Board of Supervisors is accepting letters
of interest to fill the position.
The replacement must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the
appointment; registered to vote in Justice Precinct 3; a resident of the
precinct; and belong to the same political party as the person vacating
the office, in this case a Democrat.
Letters of interest should be accompanied by a resume and a financial disclosure form. The form, and an instruction manual, can
be obtained through the county’s website at www.pima.gov using a
link under Quick Links at the right side of the page, by e-mailing a
request to the clerk of the board at [email protected], or by calling 520-724-8449.
According to the county’s website, a constable is an elected peace
officer of the county and their judicial precinct as well as the executive officer of their justice precinct. They serve civil and criminal papers of the Pima Justice Court, Pima County agencies/departments,
and equivalent level papers from other counties.
The supervisors are expected to fill the vacancy at their February
2 meeting. At least one person has expressed an interested in filling
the position.

Farmers market is now weekly
The Authentically Ajo Farmers Market in the Plaza will be held every Saturday morning from now through the cool growing season, according to Nina Sajovec of the Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture,
who gave a brief report at the January meeting of the Western Pima
County Community Council.
The market will have expanded hours during this time, from 9 a.m.
to noon. Sajovec noted that buying local at the market helps support
more than 30 growers, food value-added producers, and crafts people
while boosting the local economy in general.
The Ajo CSA is in the final stages of being able to accept food
stamps at the market. Purchases of fresh foods and vegetables with
food stamps will be matched $1 for every dollar spent in food stamps
via the Double Up Bucks program. Activities for kids will be introduced at upcoming markets, noted Sajovec.
Referring to recent rains, Sajovec said there is still time to plant a
winter garden, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn how. A
seed saving workshop will be held at the public library on January 14
at 10:30 a.m., a pomegranate pruning workshop will occur at the Many
Hands Urban Farm & Learning Center on January 20 at 10 a.m., and a
drip irrigation workshop on January 27 at 11 a.m. will be at the Many
Hands center. For Ajo’s annual health fair on January 30, the CSA will
have a presence with chickens from the Many Hands coop along with
fun chicken factoids for all ages.
Tiki is an 11-month-old female Chihuahua mix puppy. The
Pima Animal Care Center staff says she is very happy and
spunky. For more information about adopting homeless pets call
387-7502. PACC is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from
11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Wednesday evening from 4:30 until 6:30
p.m. It is located on Well Road with an entrance at the back of
the sheriff’s department building.

My name is Harold Raney. I
was born and raised in Ajo (1-111931). I lived here all my life.
Two months ago, I was involved
in a near accident in the Plaza next
to the bank. I had gone around the
park and was in the yield lane. A
car was traveling on Highway 85
heading west. Wouldn’t you know,
it was a police car. We did not collide. There was no damage and no
one was hurt. When you enter the
yield lane, you can not see the cars
coming on Highway 85 because
of the building. Technically the
police car had the right of way. He
had the green light and I was in the
yield lane.
I don’t blame the officer for
being mad — but instead of giving me a ticket, he turned me into
the Motor Vehicle Division. I received a letter from them, they
asked me to report to one of the
divisions. I went to the Motor
Vehicle Division in Casa Grande
and presented the letter to them.
They did not come right out and
say it, but because of the officer’s
recommendation and my age, they
revoked my driver’s license.
To the officer: Do you realize
what you have done to me? I had
three years left until my license
expired. That was enough time for
me to get my house in order, and
take care of things that needed to
be done. I needed to able able to
drive — you have taken away my
independence. I hope you are satisfied.

“We do have a style and format
we follow,” said editor Gabrielle
David, “and occasionally we have
to edit what families have written,
but we regard obituaries as important community news. We have no
plans to start charging for them.”

WPCCC Bylaws address both
“conflict of interest” and “the

board meetings this week: two on
Tuesday and one on Wednesday.
All three meetings will be held in
room six on the school campus.
The Tuesday meetings will
follow each other with the first
starting at 5:30 p.m. At a special
session, the board will nominate
and then elect their president and
board clerk. At the study session,
they will discuss personnel and
business items to be voted on at
Wednesday’s meeting as well as
hear reports about the 2015 tax
credit donations and speech therapy sessions.
On Wednesday, at 5:30 p.m.,
the board will meet in regular session. Agenda items include decisions about hiring teachers and
other personnel. In the business
portion they will be asked to make
decisions on out-of-state travel,
the Proposition 301 plan, and the
board meeting calendar for 2016
as well as approve the first 2016
budget revision.

Robert Stieve, editor in chief
of Arizona Highways Magazine,
gave a slide show presentation in
the public library last Friday with
the room filling quickly to its limit
of 40 occupants.
Stieve displayed magazine
covers to show how the publication has evolved from its inception in 1926 as a Department of
Transportation newsletter to its
current state with glossy photos
and literary articles. Early editions highlighted bridges, roads,
and heavy road-working equipment, and it took some time for
the evolution to a travel and tourism magazine. The first color front
cover came along in 1932, noted
Stieve, and an increasing number
of inside color photos followed
over the years. Stieve has been
editor of the magazine since April
2007.
The author lecture series in the
library is sponsored by the Friends
of the Library.

Exercise class
has relocated
The women’s exercise class
that was temporarily being held in
the LDS Church gym has relocated
to its permanent site at the Desert
Senita Community Health Center.
The free classes are on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, and Thursdays at
7 a.m. with dietician-nutritionist
Miriam Hoda facilitating.
Classes will focus on cardio
and weight exercises, and will
have options for beginning and
intermediate levels. Class size is

Garden will offer several work
sessions during the next two
weekends in cooperation with the
Ajo Regional Food Partnership. On Saturday & Sunday,
January 16 & 17, from 1 to 5 p.m.
each afternoon, Loma Bonita will
be pruning fruit trees, grape vines,
and blackberry bushes. “Everyone is invited to help,
and to learn,” said Don & Gayle
Weyers. “Wear gloves and bring
good quality, sharp pruners. Many of the pruned branches can
be planted, in the hope of growing a new bush or tree, and may be
shared by the work session participants.”
On Saturday & Sunday,
January 23 & 24, again from 1 to
5 p.m., Loma Bonita will host fruit
tree planting sessions. Trees to be
planted include peaches, apricots,
cherries, a kumquat, apriums, and
more. “Bring a shovel and wear
gloves,” say the couple. “Midafternoon snacks are always welcome.”

Last weekend the Ajo Piecemakers held an art opening reception at the library, celebrating
its 20th quilt show. The Piecemakers presented a collection of quilts created by members, the
community and also Centennial quilts. Deb Contreras is pictured standing by her piece, which was

It seems to be a season for new
beginnings, what with invitations
to a wedding, a baby’s birthday
party, and two baby showers
arriving one after another.
The wedding was for Dominique
and Joseph, whose picture is on
this page. The birthday party was
for their son Marcus, who is now a
rambunctious toddler, not really a
baby any longer.
One baby shower, which I
had to miss, was for the sister

day that was the highlight. We all
got to go watch a 4-D sonogram
and see the little boy’s face. He’s
already sucking his fist, despite
many instructions to “Move your
hand, Vaughan!”
It is truly amazing what technology can do. It’s also amazing
what a little love can do, too.
Upcoming public library events
include a button artwork program,
seed saving, and bilingual storytime.
On Wednesday, January 13, at
3 p.m., participants will get to create pieces of art with buttons. Hot
glue guns will be used, so young
participants will need to bring a
grown-up. This program is limited
to 18 participants.
On Thursday, January 14, at
10 a.m., Brandon Merchant from
Southwest Victory Gardens in
Tucson, will present a 90-minute
program about seed saving.
On Friday, January 15, at 10:30
a.m., there will be a bilingual storytime for parents who wish to
introduce their children to reading
and language in a fun way.
Ongoing programs include the
learning lab held Monday through
Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m., the
O’odham language study group
that meets Thursdays at noon, and
bilingual storytime will be Fridays
at 10:30 a.m.

in marriage on December 31, 2015, in a noon ceremony in the
Ajo Courthouse. They were led in their vows by the Hon. John
T. Peck and attended by their son Marcus D. Granillo. The bride
was given in marriage by her father, Joseph Pacheco. Their
witnesses were Michelle A. Pacheco and Otilia Mendez. A group
of family and friends attended the ceremony and an afternoon
reception at the Pacheco home.
Pickleball is the fastest growing
sport in the US, according to the
Pima County Natural Resources,
Parks and Recreation staff.
“This sport is attracting interest
with every age group. PCNRPR
will have their net out at the Desert
Senita Health Fair on January 30th
to boost local awareness of the
sport,” they said while explaining
that pickleball is a cross between
tennis, badminton and ping-pong. “You can also come to the Bud
Walker Park between 10 a.m. and
2 p.m. Monday-Thursday starting
January 11 to play on the court
by the center. You can check out
paddles and a ball, weather permitting of course. There is no cost
for playing pickleball. Come in to
the center and we will get you set
up to play.”

The Lady Raiders showed
signs of life Friday against Tohono
O’odham, but didn’t put a complete game together.

Ajo stayed close in the 1st
quarter trailing only 5-2. In the
2nd their defense began to fray
and the Eagles took a 14-4 halftime lead. Ajo came out in the 3rd
scoring a season high 12 points.
Unfortunately their defense came
apart as TO poured in 30. Both
teams looked exhausted in the
scoreless 4th.
Ajo is frustrating both to their
coach and fans. As Ticha Mancilla
noted, “They play well for a while
then some players disappear. Once
they lose momentum, they can’t
get it back.”
Chello Abril continued her solid play with four points and three
rebounds. Athina Alegria showed
her steady improvement going
two of three from the floor plus
a couple of offensive rebounds.
Off and on Sianna Garza had four
points and seven rebounds. Still
the team shot 33% from the floor
and didn’t draw a foul all game.
Coach Mancilla was frustrated.
“We’ll look good in practice, for a
while in a game, and then … Oh
man, oh man.”

The Tohono O’odham Eagles
got the last shot to win Friday
when they played the Ajo High
School Red Raiders.

In the 1st quarter, Ajo fans wondered if the Raiders had forgotten
the break was over as TO sprinted
to a 12-1 lead. Someone lit a fire
under Ajo and they came storming
back to trail 28-23 at half. Coming
out the second half Ajo demonstrated real grit and determination
fighting to a 40-38 3rd quarter lead.
It was an intense game as the
score changed hands a dozen
times. Play was physical, fast, daring. Devon Rendon racked up seven steals while Armando Herrera
had four offensive rebounds and
two assists. It came down to the
last team with the ball when TO
dropped a beautiful jumper to secure the win.
Josiah Nez led Ajo with 20+
points. Roberto Macias played
a high energy game collecting
multiple rebounds, while Juan
Herrera continued learning to own
his space on the floor becoming a
presence at forward.
Jacob Lewis did everything in
his power to carry the Raiders.
Scoring, handing out assists, and
playing monster at center, he almost got it done.
Head coach Brian Bissell was
on ambulance duty so wasn’t
courtside. However he praised the
leadership of his assistants Eddie
Williams and E.T. Bissell. Both
did a great job directing the team.
Brian Bissell noted he was
“Very proud of this team. Even
when totally out of it, they woke
up and charged back. They
showed they can go toe-to-toe
with anyone.”
Bissell continued, “We’ll go back
to the drawing board and figure out how to come out on fire.
This is a great team and they keep
learning.”

The weather cooperated nicely on Saturday, January 2, for our ProAm golf tournament and steak fry, giving us a great turnout for our afternoon game and cookout around the big mesquite grill. First place
went to the team captained by Reggie Scott with Paul Barnhart, Norma
Steckel, Roy Johnson and Carol Peek. Second went to Dustin Mendez
and his team of Bob Holden, Gerry Holm and Liz Boca.
Monday afternoon, the wind blew a little but that didn’t stop 92-yearold Jack Tavenner from playing in the Men’s Skins game and holding
his own. Tony McGarry got two skins one on 12 and one on 13 while
Bill Stoffel got two skins on #10 and #11. The other guys were just glad
to get back to the comforts of the clubhouse.
Men’s Club Tuesday morning January 5th turned out to be another
nice day. In the A Flight, Greg Burton took first place with a net 68 followed by Frank Milene with a net 79. In the B Flight, Bud Turner took
first with a net 72 and Gerry Holm took second with a net 76.
Bob Holden and crew are working on installing the new pump for the
pond on 18 and even transplanted a nice palm tree just north of #3 green.
Come play some golf and check it out.
We are already gearing up for our 38th Annual Old Time Fiddlers Contest
and Dance scheduled for February 4-7. This is a big event for the town
and we appreciate all the support we get from the businesses and our
residents. Last year we had over 100 RVers camped on the driving range
during this event. Be sure to make plans to come out and enjoy this
uniquely Ajo event.
Saturday, January 16, at 10 a.m. we will hold an old style nine-hole
scramble tournament. If you like to play scrambles this is a good one.
It is lots of fun and anyone can play and win some money. (Proceeds
will go to fertilizer fund).
Also don’t forget an important board meeting Tuesday, January 16, at

The staff at Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation say they have a fantastic
group of kids playing basketball. “These kids are learning the fundamentals of the game and it’s
showing,” they said.
Both the boys and girls teams won their first games. The boys’ score was 33-20, and the girls’
score was 47-14. The middle school teams will play in a tournament on February 3 at San Simon.
The staff also noted that volunteer coaches Eric Webber, Javier Gonzales, Mindi Avery, &
Maria Espinosa are fantastic and so are Juan Sanchez, Sarah Burgess, and Robert Burgess for
officiating and keeping score.
