Hello, Mother Nature did her best to keep our bikes parked in April, between the snow, rain and cold weather. We still had a few members log some miles. Now that May is here and the riding season begins, we are hoping to see all of our friends out and about. This month we are planning a couple of Chapter Rides to visit the members down in the Metro. May 7th for the Dr. Mudspringer open house and May 15th for Chapter Q’s Round-up. Meet times will be announced and we will meet at Thompson Hill Rest Area. If weather is bad we are probably going to be on 4 wheels. Let’s hope for the best! The May 7th trip to Dr. Mudspringer’s open house will be the Chapter ride for May. Next month we are doing our first Mystery Ride. Paul & Jamie would like to be able to lock down the hotels and get us the best rate possible, so if you are interested please give them a call with the number of people going. This should be a BLAST!! The BRC2 course is set for May22nd. This course is full for this year, but I will take your name if you are interested and put you on a stand-by list in case someone can’t make it. The cost of the course is $30 due at the time of sign-up. May 29th the Vineyard located at 1535 Arrowhead Rd. (in Kenwood), is having the Blessing of the Bikes event. Our son, Tom Kennedy, and myself attended this event last year and it was a great time. They cater the food, prizes were given out, if you wanted your bike blessed they took care of it, and there was a service inside. I couldn’t believe the amount of bikes and the different groups there last year. Due to a scheduling conflict, the June dinner social will be moved from June 18th to June 25th. We are still going to be at Eddies Ribs at 5:00. There is a recall on Honda GL1800s for the rear brakes dragging. Dave Fure found the following link to check your VIN at this web side: http://powersports.honda.com/recalls.aspx. Mascot Mr. Happy 10 TIPS FOR STAYING ALERT BEHIND THE WHEEL This article was taken from the Good Sams Roadside assistance web site. It was written for auto/RV drivers, but staying awake on a bike is very similar. We would all like to think that we are safe drivers, able to quickly make the right decisions, react to hazards and dangers instinctively, and avoid impaired thinking due to drowsiness. But “sleep is a powerful biological drive—one that can overtake even the best driver,” according to the National Sleep Foundation. ” Rolling down the windows and turning up the radio volume—these tricks don’t work.” And, unfortunately, it is not always obvious that you’re too tired to drive. Warning signs include trouble focusing, frequent blinking and heavy eyelids. Are the last few miles a blur? Have you missed traffic signs and exits? If your mind wanders and your find yourself yawning, it’s time to call it a day. Take the necessary steps to avoid drowsiness before you start your drive 2016 Dinner Socials: May. Allow 15 minutes to clear post-nap grogginess before re-starting. • Switch drivers if possible every two hours to take a walk and get some fresh air. Do some stretches and foot circles. • Deep breathing raises blood oxygen levels, which slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and improves circulation, ultimately aiding mental performance and energy. • Don’t drink alcohol, as even the smallest amount can cause drowsiness. • Do drink caffeine, which improves alertness. Repeat when effect wears off, usually after a few hours. • If you begin to feel drowsy, start a conversation or play mind games to keep your brain alert. • Avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m., as this is when your body’s biological rhythms kick in and sleepiness is most intense. • Don’t rush to meet a schedule. Safety is more important than arriving on time. • Stay hydrated by drinking liquids while you drive. • Studies have shown that daily exercise was more effective in increasing energy and reducing daytime fatigue than some medications used to treat sleep problems. Regular exercise also improves quality of sleep. Difley, Bob. “10 Tips For Staying Alert Behind The Wheel.” Good Sam Blog. 20 August 2015.
