NPF Annual Report 2014 - National Parkinson Foundation
The mission of the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) is to improve the quality of Parkinson’s care ABOUT THE FOUNDATION through research, Founded in 1957, the National Parkinson Foundation education and outreach. (NPF) is a leading national organization with an extensive network of chapters, support groups and our global Centers of Excellence. NPF chapters offer community outreach programs and services across the country. NPF programs touch more than one million people a year through our network of United States chapters, support groups and our online resource, Parkinson.org. NPF’s Centers of Excellence are leading medical centers around the globe that excel in Parkinson’s research, delivering care to more than 50,000 Parkinson’s patients. NPF has funded more than $182 million in research, education and support services. 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Cover photo taken at McGill University by Owen Egan CEO’S MESSAGE In 2014, the National Parkinson Foundation embarked on a strategic planning process to develop an updated vision and plan. In the process, we listened to scientists, patients and families, community leaders and supporters like you. Our communities from across the country told us that it’s important to live a better life today but research for a better tomorrow is the number one reason they are inspired. As a result, we are committed to increasing funding in this important area in the years ahead. Today we are making a real difference in the lives of people who have Parkinson’s through funding research by the brightest people in medicine and science; by studying the disease and its symptoms so they can be reduced or eliminated; and by developing new treatments and approaches to care that have the greatest impact. The cornerstone of our work is the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project: the largest clinical study of Parkinson’s ever conducted. Launched in 2009, the project is now tracking 7,700 patients over time, with over 17,500 clinical evaluations at 21 NPF Centers of Excellence across four countries. The project’s goal is to find what works best in the treatment and care of Parkinson’s, with the aim of slowing the impact of the disease. Our latest research shows that expert care quite literally saves lives. That is why our network of Centers and Chapters is so important—we are disseminating best practices and promoting transparency so that every person living with Parkinson’s can make the best choice of treatments. The following pages detail research successes from the past year that your support made possible. With your ongoing assistance, we will continue to make life better for people with Parkinson’s on an even bigger scale. We will help people live better lives today and in the future through better care and research. Together, we can beat this disease. Your support matters and is deeply appreciated. Warm Regards, Joyce Oberdorf President and CEO 2 DRIVING RESEARCH “ Photo: Owen Egan FOR A BETTER FUTURE My research team works to understand the impact of Parkinson’s pathology on brain cells. Our goal is that new discoveries at the cellular level could be the starting point for the development of drugs to halt the progression of the disease. I am grateful to the National Parkinson Foundation for funding this critical research. Edward A. Fon, MD, FRCP-C Lead investigator, NPF-funded research study Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, an NPF Center of Excellence 3 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 ” In keeping with our commitment to fund to induce Parkinson’s – in order to create a disease trailblazing research leading to improved model for testing new drugs. Parkinson’s treatments, NPF awarded four grants in 2014 for innovative scientific research into critical questions about the disease. Two NPF-funded teams are advancing knowledge of how Parkinson’s spreads through the brain and body, an essential step in developing new drugs that Parkinson’s-related cognitive changes profoundly affect quality of life. Launched in 2009, it is the largest data-driven study of Parkinson’s treatment ever undertaken. More than 7,700 people in four countries are enrolled, providing an unprecedented wealth of data linking care to outcomes for real people. Based on the data, NPF has already issued guidelines on best care practices, resulting in tangible progress in treatment, particularly in the field of depression. What’s more, seeing a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders appears to offer twice the benefit of care from a regular neurologist. Given the fact that many people with Parkinson’s disease never see a neurologist, or only do so every few years, these findings will have a unique and positive impact. The life-saving 2014 discoveries from NPF’s Parkinson’s Outcomes Project demonstrate again that this study is a driver of crucial progress in beating the disease. In 2014, data from the registry led to the spectacular finding that regular neurologist care, Learn more about the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project at www.parkinson.org/outcomes. 6 FOR KATHERINE CASTLE, EXPERTISE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE “ If you are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, it’s important to know you can cope and survive.
