KEY FACTORS THAT MATTER
FOR SPORTS LIGHTING
Achieving the best outcome for sports lighting requires attention to fixture selection, quantity, placement, optics
and aiming. Then there are many important variables that define the quality of lighting;
ILLUMINANCE LIGHT LEVELS
The right amount of light required on the playing surface differs greatly depending on the type
of sport in question. In general, fast action sports with a small playing object (tennis ball) or
long viewing distance will require high lighting levels. A slower speed, larger playing object
(football) or closer viewing distance requires lower lighting levels.
BEAM SPREAD AND UNIFORMITY
When designing lighting for sports facilities it is important to minimize obtrusive, spill light
and dark sections of the playing area. Various strategies are used depending on the application and a lot of consideration is given to the design to ensure the playing area will have the
proper overlapping beams void of ‘hot spots’.
MOUNTING & LOCATION
Much consideration should be given to available mounting options. The structural design of
the facility may place restrictions both in positioning of luminaires and in luminaire weight, as
some structures have limited weight bearing capabilities. Placement of luminaires should
also permit safe and easy access for maintenance. Many sports luminaires also place restrictions upon the positioning of luminaires with respect to the playing area to minimize glare and
distraction, this requires careful design. The luminaires should also be appropriate for the
local climactic conditions, and should ideally be shaped and mounted to minimize the effect
of wind producing a stress on the luminaire and mounting equipment.

ABOUT
GLARE CONTROL
MINIMUM: 106
MAX/MIN RATIO: 1.50
Glare relates to light that causes discomfort or reduces the ability to see because it comes
from a source that is too bright compared with its background. Reducing the glare is probably
the most critical issue in sports lighting. Fixture louvre’s, optics, aiming angles, along with
pole height and placement, can minimize the impact of fixture glare.
SPECGRADE LED
SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
SpecGRADE SportsLED are Restriction of Hazardous Substances-compliant, using no
hazardous materials in their production. Longer product lifetime means that less lamps will
be produced, packaged and transported. Reduced overspill of light increases system efficiency and by combining LED with good lighting design, energy consumption can be cut by up to
70% compared with traditional lighting fixtures. All these factors and more, add up to reducing the environmental impact of SpecGRADE LED Sports Lights and help build a brighter,
more vibrant and sustainable environment.

LIGHT COLOR
5700K
Achieving the right consistent light color is critical for sports environments. Different light
colors should not be mixed, especially when the event is televised. The ideal light color is
between 5000K to 5700K which creates the effect of natural daylight.
COLOR RENDERING
Good color rendering is also essential to differentiate between opposing competitors or
teams, and many sports use color and color contrast to improve visibility of sports equipment
or differentiate between the different aspects of the playing area or targett.
WHY LED MAKES SENSE FOR
SPORTS LIGHTING
LED is creating waves in the world of lighting and none more so than with sports illumination. The potential
for improving upon current technologies and sports lighting solutions are highlighted below;
RELIABILITY
PERFORMANCE
Unlike traditional bulb-based systems that
experience a high rate of failures and
fadeouts, SpecGRADE
LEDs contain no
parts to wear out or replace so you can be
sure
your
light
source
remains
maintenance-free for tens of thousands of
hours.
The brilliant white light of SpecGRADE SportsLED brings the
spectacle of the game to life with consistent and precisely
delivered light that meets the stringent demands of
international HDTV broadcasting and sports governing bodies.
By operating on just a fraction of the energy of traditional
stadium lighting systems and more controlled light, the result
is better for everyone, not to mention the person who pays the
electricity bill!
EFFICIENCY
LED sports lighting presents an opportunity
to have the most efficient use of light in both
new and existing venues. LED technology
can provide the same light levels as
conventional HID stadium lighting, while
drawing just half the energy. Sports lighting
engineers have the potential to reduce
fixture count by one-third to one-half, while
doubling the amount of light reaching the
playing surface.
CONTROL
Creative control helps stadiums and sports venues become
more multi functional and increase the potential of revenue
generation. SpecGRADE Luminaires are designed to be
compatible with the leading control solutions available in the
market. This enables operators to use lighting as
entertainment and complete flexibility to meet the different
needs for any sport. Optional switching levels for brightness
can create the perfect lighting for a variety of events.
THE DIRECT BENEFITS FOR
OWNERS, PLAYERS & FANS
LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS
SpecGRADE durable Led luminaires are virtually
maintenance free. There is no time consuming and
expensive bulb replacements, and no more
readjusting for metal halide fadeout. The LED
Luminaires can operate for more than 100,000 hours
without maintenance.
BRIGHTER, CONSISTENT LIGHT
The color temperature at 5000K to 5700K creates a
daylight effect with a crisper, brighter, feeling on the
field of play. Daylight color balance matches
perfectly with ambient light entering a stadium or
arena and the specialized optics deliver perfect
uniformity on the playing surface.
POWER OUTAGE PROTECTION
AND INSTANT ON
By operating on just half the energy of traditional
stadium lighting systems, SpecGRADE LED Floods
places less load on the power grid, which alone can
cut down on power outages. As a precaution against
normal power being interrupted, SpecGRADE
luminaires are capable of instantly turning on, so the
lights are up and running again in seconds. No warm
up or cool down time required.
ENVIRONMENT
DIRECT REPLACEMENT
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
SpecGRADE SportsLED are Restriction of Hazardous Substances-compliant, using no hazardous materials in
their production. Longer product lifetime means that less lamps will be produced, packaged and transported.
Reduced overspill of light increases system efficiency and by combining LED with good lighting design, energy
consumption can be cut by up to 70% compared with traditional lighting fixtures. All these factors and more, add
up to reducing the environmental impact of SpecGRADE LED Sports Lights that helps build a brighter,
more vibrant and sustainable environment.
With SpecGRADE Fixtures, installers can partially
retrofit, convert over phases or make a complete
refit in one go, because the Sports LED luminaires
size and weight has been carefully calculated and
the mounting options are designed to drop into the
existing lighting infrastructure. The universal power
supply operates between 95 to 305vA to work
directly with the existing power circuitry. Unlike the
HID fixtures they replace, as soon as the LED
Luminaires are turned on, they provide full
illumination at their precise color temperature,
without the need for a warm-up period. Using a
laser-aimer makes precision setup easier and
quicker than you can imagine.
The key to any successful LED installation is to give
you a realistic payback time to make sure you can
enjoy greater saving over the life of the luminaire.
Not only is LED vastly more reliable and efficient, but
the lower maintenance cost and the energy savings
from switching to SpecGRADE SportsLED is so
significant that they give you super fast payback with
some of the longest lasting products available. That
translates to reduced operating costs and positive
cashflow after reaching an early ROI breakeven
point. Switching to SpecGRADE LED Floods is just
smart business.

TELEVISION &
BROADCASTING
Lighting plays a key role in the experience of watching
sports and none more so than with Televised matches.
The unique optics technology in our LED
Luminaires precisely focuses the light, creating an
intensity and uniform ratio that ensures shadows
on the playing surface are eliminated. This improves
the appearance of moving objects and the ease with
which broadcast directors can switch camera
angles and viewpoints. Since the light levels are
much higher, it allows the cameras to work with a
smaller aperture, giving more depth and focus. The
sophisticated circuitry operates at any frame rate
enabling HDTV recording to operate flicker free, for
reduced glare and super slow motion recording.
Additionally SpecGRADE LED Sports Floods have the
ability to virtually match daylight for optimal
broadcasting without the need for filtering mixed
light colours. This meets and exceeds the highest
professional sports broadcasting standards.
