notre dame preparatory high school • annual report 2009-10
Dear Friends,
Notre Dame Prep continues to build on its reputation of being an outstanding secondary
institution for learning and character building. Our philosophy to concentrate on building
minds, bodies, and souls for the Lord has certainly paid dividends. This Annual Report reflects
the positive gains in every aspect of school life that Notre Dame Preparatory has accomplished this past year.
Last spring, we once again sent all of our graduating seniors on to higher education. These
students were accepted into some of the finest colleges and universities across the nation
and earned more than $3.4 million in scholarships. Athletically, Notre Dame won eight state
championships, and more importantly, our students performed more than 32,000 hours
benefitting those less fortunate in the community.
Financially, with the help of Carolyn Rock and her Development Department staff, along with
the help and support of our parent groups and the Notre Dame community at large, we met
or exceeded all of our projected fund-raising goals. It is important to note that because of
this consistent support, Notre Dame remains fiscally responsible and is able to look to the
future with confidence in our ability to provide for the future of this diocesan high school.
In conclusion, once again, our students have shown themselves to be prepared to meet the
challenges of the outside world. We have accomplished a great deal this past year, and with
the continued support of parents, friends, and benefactors, we will continue to chart a course
of constant positive growth for those students who now, and who will in the future, attend
Notre Dame Preparatory.
Sincerely,
David D. Gonsalves
Principal

Dear Friends and Families of Notre Dame Preparatory,
Notre Dame Preparatory, now in its eighth year, continues its tradition of excellence in
every area. I believe that as you read the annual report you will feel a great sense of pride
and satisfaction in the well-rounded education our students receive.
Notre Dame Preparatory continues to not only send all of our graduates on to higher
education, but we send them on to colleges and universities all over the world. The Class of
2010 has great reason to celebrate the more than $3 million dollars in scholarships that were
awarded for both academic and athletic achievement.
Despite the economic difficulties, the Chairman of our Finance Committee, Peter Morrow,
reports that Notre Dame Preparatory continues to enjoy a strong financial position. Thanks
to the work of so many people who work to raise money for the school we are able continue
to offer our students a high quality education. The efforts of the Mother’s Guild, Booster
Club and Development Department have greatly contributed to the strides we have made in
continuing to improve the school so that it is the best that it can be.
A special thank you to Sister Yolanda Mendoza, the Director of Campus Ministry. Through
her guidance, our students continue the legacy of giving back to the community. They have
volunteered an astounding 32,000 hours plus of community service to organizations that
desperately need our help in this challenging economic climate.
My time on the School Advisory Board has now come to an end and I leave the Board
knowing that is in very capable hands. My daughters, Bridget and Becca, both graduated
from Notre Dame Preparatory and were very well prepared for their college experiences.
Notre Dame Preparatory holds a very special place in my heart, and it always will.
We can all be very proud of Notre Dame Preparatory as it moves into the future embracing
its pledge to instill in our students Reverence, Respect and Responsibility.
Sincerely,
Beth McDonald
President, Notre Dame Preparatory School Board

A Legacy of Success...
At the core of
our success is the
unwavering belief that
an excellent education
is built on a foundation
of faith and that our
students deserve the
spiritual, academic,
moral, and social
support required to
prepare them for life.
We continued to prove in our eighth year that our students courageously accept the challenge
to live a successful and exemplary life by striving to attain their personal best. Our students have
achieved the highest honors as evidenced by NDP’s two 2010 National Merit Scholars in addition
to those who have earned recognition as National Merit finalists, semifinalists, and commended
scholars and National Hispanic Scholars. NDP students have achieved highest honors in the national
Word Masters Challenge and at the American Mathematics Contest. Additionally, NDP students
have been selected on the basis of their academic records and high moral character to participate
in the Phoenix Youth and Education Commission, Valley Teen Leadership, Scottsdale Mayor’s Youth
Council, and the National Forum of Defense, Intelligence, Diplomacy, and Medicine.
The Class of 2010 was awarded more than $3 million in college scholarships from prestigious
universities nationwide. These students were accepted at the finest universities, including Stanford,
University of Southern California, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and Boston
College. An outstanding combination of academic achievement and athleticism led to 19 members
of the Class of 2010 being awarded college athletic scholarships.
Notre Dame’s athletic programs continued to flourish with the many impressive accomplishments
of our teams and individual athletes under the direction of the school’s staff of dedicated coaches.
The 2009-2010 sports season was outstanding, with talented NDP athletes earning eight team state
championship titles. The Boys’ Golf team won its fourth state victory in five years, and the Girls’ Golf
team won its third consecutive state 4A-II title. The Girls’ Tennis team took the state title for the fourth
year in a row, and the Girls’ Track team captured its first state championship. The Boys’ Varsity Hockey
club took home its third state championship in four years, and the NDP Pom and Cheer teams dominated
at the state level, with a clean sweep of 4AII titles in Show Cheer, Stunt Cheer, Pom, and Spiritline. NDP
athletes also won individual state titles in Swimming, Girls’ Golf, Girls’ Tennis, and Girls’ Track and Field.
By providing a strong foundation designed to support spiritual, academic, moral, social, and athletic
development, Notre Dame prepares its students to meet challenges and for a lifetime of success.
NDP 2010 state champion girls’ track team.
NDP’s The Seraphim student newspaper won a
record 18 awards at the Arizona Interscholastic
Press Association’s high school journalism conference in September at ASU. The Seraphim was one
of only four papers in the state to receive a General
Excellence Award. The newspaper launched a new
online edition in the spring of 2010.
Graduates of the Class of 2010 now attend
prestigious universities.

Dear Friends and Families of Notre Dame Preparatory,
Before I address this past year, I would first like
to acknowledge the passing of Bill O’Connor.
This summer, Bill passed away after a long and
courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill
has generously shared his time and expertise
through his work on the Finance Committee
over the years. His contributions to the Finance
Committee helped shape the sound financial
landscape we currently enjoy. His selfless
dedication, insights, and sense of humor will be
greatly missed.
I am pleased to report on another financially
successful year for Notre Dame Preparatory.
The leadership at NDP is mindful of the
challenging economic times and has done an
outstanding job of making financial decisions
that address both the current and future needs
of our students while at the same time maintains
the strong financial condition of NDP required
for its continued success.
Notre Dame continues to sustain itself in
meeting the ongoing expenditures required
for operating the school, supporting extracurricular activities, and servicing our financial
obligations (e.g. principal and interest payments
on our debt). This included capital expenditures
in excess of $200,000 as we continue to invest
in our campus for items such as new servers to
improve efficiency and speed of the campus
wide IT network, replace sod as well as repair
drainage and irrigation infrastructure on the all
purpose athletic field, four new “SmartBoards”
for the portable classrooms, and upgrades to
the sound system in the cafeteria used for
school productions.
The various organizations within our community
did an excellent job of refining events, functions
and operations to maximize the positive impact
to the NDP community while at the same time
focusing on the financial implications of these
events. The achievements were the result of the
combined efforts of countless individuals both
on staff at NDP as well as volunteers who
contributed their considerable expertise and
time. The 2010 Taste of Excellence Gala and
Raffle contributed more than $40,000 to the
school, doubling the results from the prior
year. The Booster Club’s Eighth Annual Golf
Tournament raised more than $70,000, which
was also a significant increase over the prior
year’s results. The decision to combine two
previously successful events into one fantastic
event was clearly the right decision as the First
Mothers’ Guild Combined Auction and Fashion
6
Show was a major hit by any measure! The event
raised more than $120,000, including $90,000 for
NDP’s general operating and scholarship funds.
This was a wonderful evening for our students,
administration, faculty, parents, alumni and other
key stakeholders. An additional $30,000 was
raised to purchase audio visual equipment for
the classrooms and new projectors and screens
for the gymnasium and cafeteria, improving the
quality of presentations in these venues. The
increasing needs of our student body continues
to be supported by these various fund-raising
activities. Thank you to all of you who have
generously supported these efforts through
your financial donations as well as contributions
of time and expertise.
NDP continues to be proactive in planning and
addressing the ongoing difficult economic environment. All spending continues to be closely
monitored while not sacrificing the education
and extracurricular activities of our students.
The school has kept tuition increases over the
past few years to minimal amounts in order to
cover increased costs of certain uncontrollable
expenditures. The Administration continues
to pursue other avenues of financial aid and is
committed to doing everything it can to work
with families encountering financial difficulties.
I would like to thank new Finance Committee
members Colin Markley and Kirk Tushaus as
well as long term member D.J. Cole for all their
valuable contributions this past year. Their
considerable experience coupled with commitment
to contribute their time to NDP is greatly
appreciated. In addition, I want to acknowledge
the dedication and contributions of Paul Rubsam.
Paul continues to do an excellent job in his role
as NDP’s full time Director of Finance. The
challenging economic environment coupled with
NDP’s dedication to excellence requires strong
leadership in this role, and we are fortunate to
have someone of Paul’s caliber at NDP.
Thank you all for your continued and various forms
of support to NDP. Your generous contributions
allow NDP to continue to provide a high quality
Catholic education to our students.
Sincerely,
Peter Morrow

CHRISTIAN SERVICE
HOURS COMPLETED BY
NDP STUDENTS 2009-10
Notre Dame Preparatory students actively contribute to our campus and to our community,
aided by the support of many generous parents and teachers. While NDP students are required
to serve our community by completing a schedule of Christian service hours, we are also blessed
with many wonderful students who go above and beyond the requirements. The Class of 2010
volunteered a total of more than 32,740 service hours during their four years at Notre Dame.
The entire NDP student body contributes thousands of Christian service hours each year to
their churches and to organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul, to name but a few.
Having been assigned as chaplain to NDP by Bishop Olmsted the previous year, Fr. Michael
Goodyear continued his service to Notre Dame during the 2009-10 school year. Having a priest
on campus is a blessing for our school as it is a wonderful opportunity for all to grow in their
faith. Fr. Goodyear was instrumental in establishing the school’s new Bring It! club, with the goal
of helping young men grow in their understanding of Christian manhood while laying a foundation for being future husbands and fathers. The Senior Legacy Club continued its efforts under the
direction of theology faculty member Mrs. Mary Lou Lachvayder to establish a legacy of service
and commitment to those most in need, while Theology Department Head Barbara Stanley and
I enjoyed working with the students on the Liturgy Committee.
I am also grateful for the support I receive from members of the Mothers’ Guild who give generously
of their time to help care for the school’s beautiful chapel and to serve on the From The Heart
committee, which organizes Christian service opportunities for NDP students.

NOTRE DAME STUDENTS EXCEL ON ACT EXAM
Notre Dame students scored significantly higher than the state average on the 2010 ACT exam. The
ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading,
and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first-year college coursework. Notre
Dame students scored from three to six points higher than the state average in all categories. NDP is
known for its rigorous academic curriculum that requires 28 credits for graduation. The graduation
requirement for Arizona public high schools is 20 credits.
ENGLISH
Notre Dame students take four years of English,
science, mathematics, social science, and theology and three years of a foreign language. Other
required coursework includes fine arts, computer,
health, fitness, and electives. The school offers
23 Honors level courses at all grade levels and
15 Advanced Placement classes. Students in the
Honors program graduate with 30 credit hours,
a minimum grade point average of 3.5, and a
combination of 13 Honors and Advanced Placement classes. The school’s Summa Cum Laude
program requires 30 credits, a 3.75 minimum
GPA, and a total of 14 Honors and AP courses.

and Project Graduation. Monthly luncheons featured interesting and inspiring guest speakers who delivered presentations covering a wide range of topics. Guild members provided volunteer support for the
school’s chapel, front office, Guidance Department, Varsity Shop, and also spearheaded numerous
service projects benefiting the community at large.
2010 INAUGURAL “REACH FOR THE STARS”
AUCTION AND FASHION SHOW
More than 550 Notre Dame Prep supporters gathered at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort on March 27
to bid enthusiastically on silent and live auction items at “Reach for the Stars.” The inaugural Mothers’
Guild event, chaired by Janet Ault, was entirely underwritten by donors and raised $100,000 for
the school’s operating budget and scholarship fund. The event also raised an additional $30,000 to
install new telecommunications systems in classrooms and the gymnasium.

A Legacy of Strength...
Phil Hugus
Booster Club President
Booster Club
Board 2009-10
The Booster Club enjoyed a successful year in 2009-10 with the support of a great board of directors
and hundreds of supportive members and volunteers. Notre Dame continues to merit its well-earned
reputation as an outstanding high school that attracts students with the potential to excel both on and off
the playing field. Many new trophies and banners were added over the course of the school year to the
Dale M. Jensen Gymnasium as the Saints won team championships in Girls’ Track and Field, Girls’ Tennis,
Boys’ Golf, Girls’ Golf, Hockey, Pom, Show Cheer, Stunt Cheer, and Spiritline. Congratulations to the
Girls’ Track team for winning its first state title! Nineteen members of the Class of 2010 have gone on to
further their athletic prowess at the college level. Talented NDP athletes also won numerous individual
state championship medals in Swimming, Girls’ Golf, Girls’ Tennis, and Girls’ Track.
Mike Harvey
Vice President and
President-Elect
The Booster Club is proud to have supported these outstanding teams, their coaches, and our superb
athletic director, Mike Mahon, who at year’s end announced he had accepted a teaching position abroad.
Under his leadership, NDP has become a powerhouse to be reckoned with in the Arizona Interscholastic
Association’s 4A Division II. The club is deeply grateful for its hardworking members who provide important social and financial support to Notre Dame’s athletic programs. The club is deeply grateful for his
five years of service to our school and for his role in motivating the club’s hardworking members who
provide important social and financial support to Notre Dame’s athletic programs.

Golf Tournament Chair
The club added more than 140 new families to its membership roster this year, bringing total
membership to more than 500 families. Through its membership drive and annual golf tournament,
the club was able to contribute more than $100,000 to support NDP athletic programs. NDP’s 8th
Annual Golf Tournament at Troon North Golf Club was another resounding success under the
direction of co-chairs Tom Lehman and Tony Montgomery, raising $70,000. The club also held four
successful events on campus this year: the Fall, Winter, and Spring Sports Festivals, and the second
annual Night of Champions. The club was proud to present two inspirational speakers to Notre Dame
students and families: Rudy Ruettiger of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football fame spoke at the Fall
Sports Festival, and NFL player Ray McElroy, chaplain for the Chicago Bears, brought the crowd to
its feet at the Night of Champions. Brandon Maxwell and his team at M Catering continued their
support of NDP athletics by providing Notre Dame families with top-notch fare at our festivals and
at the game concession stands.

2009 “Taste of Excellence” Gala Raises
$45,000 for Scholarships
Cuisine from 16 of the Valley’s finest restaurants, wine tasting, dancing under the stars,
and the raffle of a 2010 Mercedes-Benz drew 800 guests to Notre Dame Preparatory
for the school’s annual gala, “Visions 2009: A Taste of Excellence,” in October. The
festivities celebrated NDP’s achievement as a nationally ranked college preparatory high
school and netted $45,000 in scholarship funds for current students.
NDP parents Mark and Amanda Bosco of Great American Title Agency, Inc. and Tiffany
and Bosco P.A. donated the luxury sedan from Schumacher Mercedes-Benz in Scottsdale.
Bruce Beverly and Mark Bosco of Tiffany
and Bosco and Great American Title Company,
Werner Schumacher, and David Gonsalves.
NDP Director of Development Carolyn Rock said, “The Boscos’ gift of a Mercedes to the
gala’s raffle for a second consecutive year reflects their belief that Notre Dame provides
an outstanding academic experience that attracts students from across the Valley, including Fountain Hills, Anthem, Mesa, and Glendale. Their generosity is especially appreciated
this year as we try to help every student who requires financial aid to stay in school.”
Gala Chair Sally Cashman credits Honorary Chairs Michael DeMaria of Heirloom at D.C.
Ranch and Brandon Maxwell of M Catering by Michael’s for assembling an impressive
roster of Valley chefs who prepared tastings of their specialties for guests to enjoy.
NDP Arts Angels
The NDP Arts Angels successfully
achieved its mission to
support and develop
opportunities for NDP
fine arts students.
The Notre Dame Arts
Angels is a support
group comprised of
parent volunteers who take
an active role in promoting the arts
at NDP. Members of the Arts Angels
bolster the school’s art, photography,
ceramics, music, dance, and theater
programs by offering their time and
experience to support the various artistic needs and aspirations of our fine arts
students and their instructors. Among
its many endeavors, the Arts Angels
has organized a month-long exhibition
of NDP art to be held the month of
December at the Phoenix Art Museum.
CTODP Offers State Tax Credit and
Provides Financial Aid to NDP Students
The Development Department extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who
contributed to the Catholic Tuition Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix (CTODP)
and enjoyed a state income tax credit while funding scholarships at NDP. Your generosity provides valuable financial assistance to deserving students at Notre Dame.
As a rapidly growing school with a diverse student body, scholarship aid continues
to be one of our greatest needs. The 2009-10 CTODP campaign raised $328,000
in scholarship funds (a 7% decrease from the previous year). More than ever before,
the need for financial aid at NDP is still greater than the available resources.
In the coming school year, you will have several opportunities to contribute to
CTODP. Please open your hearts and minds to this important need by taking
advantage of CTODP’s dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,000. Your gift will
make a difference in the life of a Notre Dame student.
NDP thanks all of the dedicated parent volunteers who gave so generously of their time
to make the 2009-10 CTODP campaign an unqualified success, especially Susan Casaceli,
Holly Cooper, Nancy Dougherty, Donald Evans, Sue Fischer, Laura Hicks, Marci Matt,
Margaret Shoemaker, Catherine Wetter, Clara Ponce, Carol Ann Wright, Mareencita
and Javier Ramos, Amy Rivers, Annie Stempta, Margaret Nawrocki, and Nada Zlaket.

A Legacy of Support...
Dear Parents and Friends of Notre Dame Preparatory:
Beginning with the school’s signature event, The Taste of Excellence Gala, and concluding
with the fabulous Mothers’ Guild Auction and Fashion Show, Notre Dame parents and friends
demonstrated the strong community support that has become the school’s trademark. While
the economy and mixed financial markets provided challenges, Notre Dame nevertheless met
its financial goals through the support of parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, and friends
who contributed their time and resources.
Carolyn Rock
Director of Development
In the fall, event chair Sally Cashman and culinary co-chairs Brandon Maxwell and Michael
DeMaria coordinated an assemblage of 16 of the Valley’s finest restaurants for the annual
Taste of Excellence Gala. A high point of the evening was the raffle of a Mercedes C300 sports
sedan, which was generously donated by Mark and Amanda Bosco. The proceeds from the
event benefited the NDP “Scholarships for Now” Fund.
More than 470 donors contributed to the Annual Fund and helped us achieve our goal of
$200,000. Thank you to our annual fund co-chairs Lora Drummond and George Krueger.
The freshmen won the first Annual Fund Class Challenge and received a catered dinner on
the field before the Homecoming fireworks display. The Annual Fund is the backbone of the
school’s fundraising and provides for the current needs of our students and faculty.
The CTODP committee led by Denis Slawsby raised more than $300,000 for financial aid
through the state’s tax-credit program. In addition, NDP was the beneficiary of a benevolent
corporate donor who provided more than $500,000 in funds for needy students. As a result
of this generosity, 13 students are receiving a Notre Dame education who otherwise would not
be able to attend the school. This is an inspirational example of how our corporate community
can change the lives of others through tax credits.
The Booster Club’s popular Golf Tournament set new records in 2009. It was Tony Montgomery’s
last year as chair, and he concluded it on a very successful note. The end of the year culminated
with a fabulous Mothers’ Guild auction at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. Chair Janet Ault and her
committee coordinated a lovely evening that culminated in a grand finalés as our senior students
took the stage to model fashions by Dillard’s. A new tradition was established that evening when
NDP recognized two volunteers who had led the school in its early years. Dale Jensen and Kirk
Tushaus were honored as the school’s first recipients of the Patron Saint Award. The event
surpassed its goal and was a true celebration of the school, its seniors, and their achievements.
As we begin fundraising efforts for 2010-2011, I cannot stress enough the importance of your
contributions. Notre Dame‘s success is due, in large part, to those who believed in the school
and have fostered its growth through gifts of time, talent and financial support. On behalf of
Notre Dame’s faculty and students, I express my deepest appreciation.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Rock
Director of Development

The 2009 Annual Fund
goal was $200,000.
All private schools have an
annual fund that covers the
difference between the cost
of tuition and the real cost
of educating a student.
Notre Dame Prep is deeply
appreciative of all of the
families who donated to this
year’s fund. Donors who
contributed $1,500 or more
to the fund were invited
to attend the annual

A Legacy of Growth...
The 202 members
of the Class of 2010
marched at a
graduation ceremony
held May 18 at
Wells Fargo Arena.
At the core of Notre Dame’s success is the unwavering belief that an excellent education
includes the spiritual, academic, moral, and social support required to prepare our students for
life. Notre Dame Preparatory has graduated to date a total of 975 students who now attend
prestigious universities and colleges across the United States. As a result of their dedicated
effort and an excellent college preparatory curriculum, many of these students are enjoying the
benefits of the more than $17 million in scholarship offers that have been awarded to NDP’s
first six graduating classes. Notre Dame alumni are maintaining their ties to the school through
a variety of activities, including the Alumni Panel Discussion for the current senior class, the
annual Homecoming Rally and football game, and the Alumni Christmas Party.
The Alumni Representatives who give generously of their time to spearhead these events:
Holly Haro, Kayla Powell, Samantha Stolper
Kali Bills, Kristina Stojak, Eric TenEyck

The Endowment—$125,000
The Endowment provides additional sources of income to ensure the longevity of the school.
These funds are held and invested to generate a reliable source of income for Notre Dame.
Gifts to the Endowment are long-term investments in the school’s future. The Finance
Committee’s goal for the Endowment is to increase the corpus and to use a portion of its
earnings for financial aid for deserving students. Financial aid is one of the school’s greatest
needs after payment of the construction loan.
