1.0 Introduction
The National Annual Conferences for Apple & Pear Growers and Cherry Growers were held
simultaneously in Adelaide in August 2011 following the successful dual conferences held in
Tasmania in 2009.
The Conferences included the Annual Levy Payers Meeting, Members Forum, Formal
Conference Proceedings and HortExpo (incorporating trade displays).
The theme of the 2011 National Conferences “Growing Smarter Growing Stronger”
addressed the needs of the growers with a strong emphasis on practical and applied
research, grower case studies and experiences, and practical demonstrations. The focus on
grower related topics has been a conscientious decision since prior to the 2009 conference
in Tasmania as attendance trends showed a declining number of growers attending their
peak industry conferences.
The theme was also very relevant given the recent difficult seasons experienced, particularly
by the national Cherry industry.
The HortExpo concept was first introduced at the 2009 national conferences and was once
again very well received by growers. The location for this years HortExpo was an apple
packing shed located in an orchard in the Adelaide Hillsand incorporated an extensive trade
expo, technical research presentations, sponsor presentations and some Ĩield Ănd
equipment demonstrations.
Whilst not associated with this project it should also be noted that the 2 conferences were
also in conjunction with the National Rubus Conference and Rubus delegates were invited to
attend networking functions.
2.0 Methodology
Fruit Growers Tasmania provided a proposal to Cherry Growers Australia South Australia and
Apple & Pear Australia Ltd to manage their national conferences and hold them
simultaneously in Adelaide in August 2011.
FGT organised a conference committee of six members comprising CGSA grower
representatives, FGT’s Business Development Manager and Executive Officer. Other
members of the Committee included APAL Communications Manager, Tasmanian growers
and a representative from Apple & Pear South Australia. The direct input from the growers
was invaluable in selecting speakers to provide presentations that would be informative and
interesting for the prime audience target, growers.
The aim of the HortExpo was to provide delegates with the opportunity of combining
presentations and/or demonstrations with sponsor information that would be of interest
and provide a variety of information. The HortExpo also ensured that exhibitors maximised
their contact with delegates and were able to more effectively display their products and
services.

Page 3
For these conferences it was also decided to design the Levy Payers Meeting in a similar
format to the conferences (particularly the Cherry Levy Payers). This formatting approach
was well received by growers with attendances to the Levy Payers meetings much greater
than traditional attendance numbers.
A conference brochure was developed and distributed to all growers nationally by way of
the Australian Fruit Grower magazine and direct mail to national cherry growers. The
brochure and registration form for the 2011 conference were loaded onto USB cards
reducing the volume of paper utilised for the conference. Advertising was also undertaken
in both the Australian Fruit Grower and the Tree Fruit magazines as well as local promotion
of the event and distribution of information to the State industry organisations. Advertising
was also taken out in the New South Wales publication “Stock Journal”.
There was a conscientious effort by organisers to reduce waste and encourage recycling
hence the use of the USB re-usable cards, organic jute conference bags and other
“clean/green” initiatives.
3.0 Conference Program
A copy of the Conference program is attached and was contained within the Conference
brochure loaded onto USB.
The program comprised CGA Annual General Meeting, Levy Payers meetings for both APAL
and CGA; APAL Members’ Forum, Technical presentation days: one each for Apples and
Cherries, HortExpo and networking events – Taste of South Australia and Conference dinner.
Both the networking events provided time for growers and industry associated organisations
from the various states to meet and discuss industry issues, conference topics etc. The
Conference dinner also provided the opportunity for presentation of Life Memberships to
Cherry Growers from SA, Vic and NSW and a special presentation to the retiring APAL
Chairman.
4.0 HortExpo
A copy of the HortExpo program is attached.
The HortExpo not only included an extensive range of trade displays (over 38 sites) but also
technical presentations throughout the day from respected researchers across the country
and including some of the official conference speakers. There were also some field
demonstrations from consultants and agronomists as well as practical trade displays.
Throughout the day there were 2 coolstores set up as lecture theatres and field
demonstrations occurring at consecutive times as well as the working trade displays.
Delegates were coached from the city to and from the event which was also fully catered
for. It was a full day of events receipting very positive feedback from delegates and
sponsors.

5.0 Discussion
The concept of combining two national conferences together has been discussed for several
years and the 2009 event demonstrated how successful it can be. Given a relatively high
percentage of growers in some states growing both commodities the combined conference
appears to be well regarded by a number of growers.
Everyone is conscious of time commitment – growers can’t afford to be away from their
orchard businesses for lengthy periods with the same situation for speakers, researchers and
sponsors. Accordingly the combined conference provides the option of attending for a few
days focussing on their priority crop or coming for the whole week where they are focussing
on both crops. Sponsors support the combined conference because they have both
industries at the one time and with the HortExpo they really only need to commit for a
couple of days.
The other benefit for growers and sponsors is the reduced costs by only having to attend
one conference venue rather than two which can quite often be in different states and
sometimes only a few weeks apart.
The Conferences were well attended with a high participation from the grower base. This
can be attributed to a number of factors however, the key contributors may have been :
- Combining two conferences minimised resources (financial, time etc) for those
growers, researchers, exhibitors and other stakeholders who would normally attend
both conferences.
- The content of the conferences was specifically aimed at the target audience for the
conferences – growers. The major input to the program was from growers.
- The conference program was kept tight so that time away from the orchard or
business was minimised.
- Large numbers of exhibitors allowed growers to access many relevant trade
exhibitions in one place.
- Both the Cherry Industry and the Apple & Pear industry have made the decision to
hold their national conferences bi-annually which seems to suit growers better than
having a conference every year.

There was a variation in numbers from the 2009 conferences, however the results are still
positive with grower representation from all States. The variation may be attributable to
the event in 2009 being held in Tasmania where conference attendance historically is always
higher than other locations and also the difficult season experienced by cherry growers in
2010/11 may have had an impact. The apple growers numbers appeared to be up a little
and this could be due to the focus on the issue of imports and the APAL road show just prior
to the conference encouraging growers to attend.

8.0 Conference Budget
Conference budget reconciliation is outlined in appendix 1.
9.0 Conclusion
Fruit Growers Tasmania’s aim in hosting the two industry conferences was to capitalise on
the success of the 2009 combined conferences which attracted many growers and received
very positive feedback from the delegates.
The conference program is always a key factor presenting a successful conference. The
Conference Committee considered choice of speakers and topics very carefully which
produced a quality program which was relevant to growers.
The HortExpo was again received very well with strong support from sponsors. Attendees
had a variety of activities available on the day including research presentations, product
presentations, field and equipment demonstrations and trade displays.
As an addition to the combined conferences, FGT assisted with the co-ordination of a one
and half day RUBUS program at the request of the Australian Rubus Growers Association.
This was scheduled at the end of the conference week.

Growing smarter
Growing stronger
INTRODUCTION
The 2011National Cherry Conference and the National Apple
& Pear Conference have been specifically tailored to meet the
demands of Australian pome fruit and cherry growers. The
program is purposely focussed on production issues which have
strong ‘take home’ messages for growers. Our aim is to inspire
growers with new concepts and methodologies which they can
implement on their own properties. With increasing pressures
to reduce costs and become globally competitive our aim is to
give you the latest information on new and future production
techniques. The HortExpo will occur again following on from
the successful inaugural HortEXpo in 2009. The event will be a
combined field day, workshop, seminar, and trade show that will
appeal to all growers and industry stakeholders alike.
Growing Smarter, Growing Stronger
The theme of the this years event is ‘Growing Smarter, Growing
Stronger’ and reflects the necessity for the modern orchardist
to be abreast of modern production trends to ensure that their
business if economically viable and sustainable.
And Going Greener....
In 2011 we bring you a greener conference with some ‘green’
initiatives including a paperless program and a reusable USB card.
You will see other initiatives leading up to and during the
conference.
Growing towards a sustainable future...

INTERNATIONAL
SPEAKER PROFILES
Dr. Larry Schrader (USA)
Dr. Larry Schrader recently retired from Washington State
University. He has been involved in agricultural research for 44
years since completing his Ph.D. at The University of Illinois in
1967. During the last 16 years, Schrader and his research group
became internationally known for research on several apple
fruit skin disorders, including sunburn. To help apple growers
reduce losses due to sunburn damage, Schrader invented the
first sunscreen for apples to help growers protect their fruit.
Schrader and his research group also became widely known for
research on sweet cherry cracking induced by rain. Two causes
of cracking were identified, and environmental factors that
increase cracking were identified.
Dr Pierre-Eric Lauri (France)
Pierre-Eric Lauri is currently a Senior
Researcher at INRA (National Institute
for Agronomic Research) in France.
After a Bachelor Science in 1982 in
Tropical biology at Montpellier, France
he spent 1 ½ years for national civil service as junior scientist at
ORSTOM (now IRD) in Nouméa, New Caledonia. He then spent
3years as a teacher in Junior high School in New Caledonia.
Pierre- Eric completed a PhD thesis on tree architecture in
relation to flowering with field works in New Caledonia and
French Guyana in 1988. He was recruited at INRA in 1989,
as researcher on a program on fruit tree architecture and
genetic variability, and improvement of tree training. Research
implemented on temperate and tropical species: Cherry, Peach,
Fig, Pear, Olive, with a main focus on Apple and Mango.
Dr. Amos Naor (Israel)
Amos Naor received his three degrees
in Soil Science at the Faculty of
Agriculture, Rehovot in the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, Israel. He
works for the Golan Research Institute of the University
of Haifa, Israel since 1985. Amos Naor works also for the
Northern R&D in Israel since 1995 and serves as the scientific
director of the deciduous orchards and wine grapes division.
The general fields of interest are irrigation scheduling of fruit
trees and applied environmental physiology. In the past two
decades Amos Naor works on two major topics: water stress
indicators for irrigation scheduling, mainly focusing on midday
stem water potential and optimising irrigation of fruit trees at
different phenological stages.
Peter Triloff (Germany)
Peter Triloff has a long history within
horticulture starting back in 1979. He
has completed studies in horticulture and is due to complete his
PhD in 2011. Much of his work has focused on areas of crop
protection including work on diseases such as apple scab and
in recent years on chemical application techniques. The focus
of his PhD was “Small Droplet Spray Application of Pesticides
in Top-Fruit 0 Minimization of Spray Drift by Optimized Air
Flow and Canopy Related Dosage. Peter Triloff is employed by
Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst as a consultant in Germany.
