Equal pay day for women
Women continue to be paid less than men in
Ohio and other states, and Equal Pay Day aims to call
attention to this persistent inequity, in part by utilizing
April 14. The date represents how far into the new year
a woman needs to work in order to match the amount of
money a male counterpart made in the previous year. Beth
Lonn, chief grants and operating officer with the Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, says females in the U.S. earn
just 78 percent of what males are paid.

Homicides on rise in city
Robinson
A shooting incident on
Saturday sent two people to Metro
Health Medical Center. Roderick
Gilcrease, 44, shot his 20-year-old
daughter and a 40 -year-old family friend who was attempting to
intercede in the family dispute outside of his mother’s house on Russell Road. Gilcrease fled the scene,
and an arrest warrant charging him
with felonious assault has been issued.
Police ask anyone with
information about Gilcrease’s
whereabouts call 3rd District detectives at 216-623-5318.
Two incidents on Sunday left two people dead. Braylon
Robinson, a one year old baby, was
fatally shot in the face by a 3-yearold who found a loaded gun on
Sunday morning.
According to police, the
mother was in the room during the
incident, but her back was turned
until she heard the single gunshot.
She turned to see her child bleeding. Two other children in the
room were not hurt.
Police are trying to determine who owns the gun and who
left the gun in the home.
The mother was originally taken into custody, but has been
released.
A second shooting incident on Sunday morning left three
victims hospitalized. According to
police reports, two men and a woman were shot as they drove along
Benham Avenue. The victims, two
19-year-old men and a 20-year-old
woman, told police they were inside a car driving near East 116th
Street when they heard gunshots
about 12:15 a.m and were then
struck by gunfire. The woman and
one of the men were taken to Metro
Health Medical Center where they
were treated and released, police
said. The third victim remains in
Hillcrest Hospital, police said. Police have no information about the
suspected shooter or shooters.
In a shooting incident on
Tuesday morning that left one person dead and one victim severely
injured, police obtained an arrest
warrant for Willie R. Wilson Jr., 19,
of Brooklyn, whom they charged
with one count of aggravated
murder in the death of Miyajhane
Vance, 19.
According to police,
Wilson entered Vance’s East 99th
Street apartment building about
2:45 a.m. Tuesday, and shot her
multiple times in the head and
body. Vance’s older sister, who
hid in the closet with Vance’s two
young children, both under three
years old, called 911.
Wilson shot Vance’s
17-year-old brother during the attack, and he is in intensive care at
MetroHealth Medical Center. Police gave no motive for the attack
on Vance and her brother.
According to police, Wilson has
not been taken into custody.

custody for the stabbing death of

Gauge report. The national average is $2.34.

price for regular unleaded gasoline has continued to point lower,
due to the resolution of regional
refinery issues and a global price
of crude oil that remains relatively low.
Consumers are saving
$1.25 per gallon compared to this
same date last year, and motorists continue to pay significantly
lower prices at the pump in comparison to previous years: April
13, 2011 ($3.81); April 13, 2012
($3.90), April 13, 2013 ($3.54).
National pump prices have fallen
for 22 of the past 30 days.
Despite falling for the
majority of the previous month,
retail averages maintain the potential to inch upward short-term
as we approach the summer driving season. The price at the pump
remains heavily influenced by
the global price of crude and the
ability of domestic refineries to
manage scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. It is estimated
that even with prices reflecting
seasonality, consumers are expected see prices move lower
leading up to the peak driving
season this summer.
The global oil market
remains bearish, despite the price
of crude showing volatility reminiscent of the financial crisis in
2008 and 2009.
Global supply continues
to outpace demand, and news of
sustained production from OPEC
along with high-cost production
countries like the U.S is expected
to keep downward pressure on
global crude prices.
At the close of Friday’s
formal trading on the NYMEX,
WTI was up 85 cents and settled
at $51.64 per barrel.

an earlier stabbing death. Police arrested Glen Campbell in the stabbing
death of Eva Hodisan, 76, who
was found stabbed in her W.

7. Based on physical evidence
recovered from the apartment,
a warrant was issued for the arrest of Campbell. He was taken
into custody without incident on

homicides in the city this year.

and Timothy Russell, 43, on November 29, 2012, has refused to testify in the trial of fellow officer, Michael Brelo, who shot 49 times into
the car that Russell was driving. Officer Michael Brelo faces two counts
of voluntary manslaughter.

A new report ranks
Ohio 11th in the nation
among states with the highest
percentage of bridges in need
of major repairs or upgrades.
The analysis, conducted by the American Road
and Transportation Builders
Association (ARTBA), found
more than seven percent of
Ohio's bridges are structurallydeficient.
Alison Black, chief
economist with the ARTBA,
says that number comes to
about 2,000 bridges in Ohio
which should be a concern
for every motorist especially
with the collapse of the Cincinnati overpass.
"A bridge is classified as structurally deficient
if one of the key structural elements, usually the deck, superstructure or substructure,
is rated in poor condition or
worse," Black said.
New hope is on the
horizon for children suffering
from chronic kidney disease,
thanks to the results of a new
study that, for the first time,
identifiessomeofthefactors
that can lead to kidney failure.
Dr. Bradley Warady,
pediatric nephrologist with
Children's Mercy Hospital
in Kansas City, was the coprincipal investigator on the
study, which looked at nearly
500 children with chronic
kidney disease over 10 years.
Warady says many
people don't realize kidney
disease can have a profound
effect on a child's growth and
development.
Warady says the
risk factors they uncovered,
including high blood pressure, anemia, and protein
loss, are treatable, and the
hope is that addressing those
issues will keep kidney dis-
ease from progressing so
that kids can avoid having to
go through dialysis or even
transplants.
Warady says chronic kidney disease is not as
common in children as it is
in adults, but it can be much
more challenging to treat.
But he says the
good news is that many of
the underlying issues they
uncovered can be successfully managed.

Malcolm X considered the ‘Prince of Islam’

I thank all of you for
inviting me to give this lecture in
the memory of a great American
and a great Muslim, Malcolm X,
known to us as EL-Hajj Malik
Shabaz. It is an honor for an immigrant Muslim who never met
Malcolm X to give this lecture.
This is due to the recognition
of the fact that more and more
Americans are turning to Islam
and more and more Afro-American Muslims are returning to
main-stream Sunni Islam. The
dream of universal brotherhood
of all American Muslims as envisioned by Malcolm X toward
the end of his journey on this
planet is coming true. More and
more immigrant Muslims are
embracing their Afro-American
brothers and accepting Malcolm
X, whom I called in a previous
article “the Prince of Islam in
North America,” as a true leader
of the Islamic movement in the
U.S.A.
Today’s
American
Muslims are not the first wave of
Muslims who came here. Muslims have tried to come here ever
since the 12th century. However,
between the 16th and 18th centuries, millions of them were
brought here against their own
free will. Not only half of 6 mil-
lion Africans but thousands of
fair-skinned slaves of Turkish/
Hispanic origin from Morocco,
Portugal and Spain, now know
as Mullengeons were Muslims.
They were robbed of
their names, religion and language and a new identity was
given to these once-free people
who were made to work and
live on plantations. Their sufferings during ocean voyages, on
Caribbean holding islands, and
upon arrival on the mainland are
known to historians. The anger
of the Afro-American soul, like
that of Malcolm X before Hajj,
is the direct result of the oppression that their forefathers suffered.

There are some deductions I have never seen
on the forms I have filled out
and I have always wondered
why. Let me list some:
Grandchildren —
have never been listed as a legitimate deduction. Does the
IRS know just how expensive grandchildren are? My
jellybean budget alone could
finance a small third world
country and I only have three
grandchildren.
Pets — have never
been included as deductions.
Pets have a marvelous role in
enhancing our lives and giving us a good excuse to get
out of the house and walk
around the block.
Pet food is expensive, as any pet owner knows,
not to mention those exorbitant veterinary bills. (Does
my doghouse qualify as a
home office? I spend a lot of
time there so it should.)
Vacation — is another overlooked item. Does
the IRS think I am taking a
vacation just for my health?
Oh, yea. I am. Well, my
health is important. Every
dollar I spend on vacation
should be deducted from my
income and not be taxable,
which would take a lot of
stress off my next vacation.
Presents — don’t
tell me Christmas presents
are not authentic tax-deductible considerations. If it were
not for me buying all those
Christmas presents the general economy of our country
would go into a slump. Buying Christmas presents is the
one thing I can do for my
country and I should expect
some compensation.
These are just a few
suggestions I would make if
left up to me.
There is no way I
could get away with writing
my own ticket for my personal income tax return. The
government has set up rules
and regulations to guide everyone.
The Bible clearly
says; “There is a way which
seemeth right unto a man, but
the end thereof are the ways
of death.” (Proverbs 14:12
KJV.) And, “Jesus saith unto
him, I am the way, the truth,
and the life: no man cometh
unto the Father, but by me.”
(John 14:6 KJV.)
Some people think
they can write their own ticket when it comes to God, forgetting God has established
rules and regulations that apply to everyone.

situational necessity. Although
being a Sunni Muslim, I do
not approve of the theological
and racial teachings of the Nation of Islam, retrospectively,
I think it was the will of God.
It was God’s way to let AfroAmericans realize their past and
enter on a new platform. Once
you enter into a house through
the wrong door and then realize
it, you must get out and re-enter
through the front door. Thus
many Afro-Americans who entered the House of Islam through
the wrong door of the Nation of
Islam (NOI) are now re-entering
into Islam through the front
door. Without NOI, there would
have been fewer Afro-American
Muslims and, for sure, not a Malik Shabaz.
Historians have divided the life of Malcolm X into
three periods - a) 1948 to 1964the NOI period, b) 1964 - the
Black Nationalist Period and c)
1964 to 1965 - the Universalist Islamic Period. However, I
divide into only two periods,
i.e., before Hajj (pilgrimage to
Mecca) and after Hajj. Hajj had
transformed the black militant
Afro-American Nationalist to a
true Muslim, a Dayee (Muslim
missionary) and an Imam (leader).
It is important to learn
of his revulsion to the oppression and racism from his own
words as how he felt the pain.
In 1963, while still with NOI, he
said “The problem itself was created by the white man and it was
created because the white man
brought us here in chains against
our will. It was a crime. And the
one who committed that crime is
the criminal who should pay....
You don’t put the crime in jail,
you put the criminal in jail. And
kidnaping is a crime. Slavery is a
crime. Lynching is a crime.
And the presence
of 20 million black people in
America against their wil is a
living testimony of the crime
that Uncle Sam committed, your
forefathers committed, when
our people were brought here in
chains.
“Now, you brought
20 million black people in this
country who were brought here
and were put in a political, economic and mental prison. This
was done by Uncle Sam. And
you think when you open the
door a few cracks, and give this
integration-intoxicated Negro a
chance to run around the prison
yard--that’s all he’s doing--that
you’redoing him a favor.” Similarly in January, 1963: “We are
trapped in a vicious circle of economic, intellectual, social and
political death. Inferior housing,
inferior education which in turn
leads to inferior jobs. We spend
a lifetime in this vicious circle.
Or in this vicious cycle going in
circles. Giving birth to children
who see no hope for the future
but to follow our miserable footsteps.”
Malcolm X learned
that
though
Christianity preached brotherhood, white
America could not deliver it to
the “people of color”. Thus he
said on February 16, 1965 at
Corn Hill Methodist church, “I
believe in the brotherhood of
man. But despite the fact that I
believe in the brotherhood of
man, I have to be a realist and realize that here in America, we’re
in a society that doesn’t practice
brotherhood. It doesn’t practice
what it preaches. It preaches
brotherhood, but it doesn’t practice brotherhood. And because
this society doesn’t practice
brotherhood, those of us who
are Muslim--those of us who left
the Black Muslim movement
and regrouped as Muslims, in a
movement based upon orthodox
Islam--we believe in the brotherhood of Islam.”
The experience at Hajj
taught Malcolm and teaches us
that after becoming an orthodox Muslim by the declaration
of Kalima, a Muslim must taste
Islam by practicing it within a
community of practicing Muslims. The brotherhood, justice
and respect for each other’s
rights that he only dreamed and
spoke in the past, was becoming
a pleasant reality.
Thus in a letter from
Saudi Arabia after Hajj, he wrote
“Never have I witnessed such
sincere hospitality and over-
whelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of
all colors and races here in this
ancient Holy Land, the home of
Abraham, Muhammad and all
the other Prophets of the Holy
Scriptures. For the past week, I
have been utterly speechless and
spellbound by the graciousness I
see displayed all around me by
people of all colors.
“I have been blessed
to visit the Holy City of Mecca,
I have made my seven circuits
around the Ka’ba, led by a young
Mutawaf named Muhammad,
I drank water from the well of
the Zam Zam. I ran seven times
back and forth between the hills
of Mt. Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. I
have prayed in the ancient city of
Mina and I have prayed on Mt.
Arafat.”
“There were tens of
thousands of pilgrims, from all
over the world. They were of all
colors, from blue-eyed blonds
to black-skinned Africans. But
we were all participating in the
same ritual, displaying a spirit of
unity and brotherhood that my
experiences in America had led
me to believe never could exist between the white and nonwhite.”
“America needs to understand Islam, because this is
the one religion that erases from
its society the race problem.
Throughout my travels in the
Muslim world, I have met, talked to and even eaten with people
who in America would have
been considered white -- but the
white attitude was removed from
their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen
sincere and true brotherhood
practiced by all colors together,
irrespective of their color.”
“You may be shocked
by these words coming from me.
But on this pilgrimage, what I
have seen, and experienced, has
forced me to rearrange much of
my thought-patterns previously
held and to toss aside some of
my previous conclusions. This
was not too difficult for me. Despite my firm convictions, I have
always been a man who triesto
face facts and to accept the reality of life as new experience
and new knowledge unfolds it. I
have always kept an open mind,
which is necessary to the flexibility that must go hand in hand
with every form of intelligent
search for truth.”
“During the past
eleven days here in the Muslim
world, I have eaten from the
same plate, drunk from the same
glass and slept on the same rug
-- while praying to the same
God -- with fellow Muslims,
whose eyes were the bluest of
blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was
the whitest of white. And in the
words and in the actions and in
the deeds of the white Muslims,
I felt the same sincerity that I
felt among the black African
Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan and
Ghana.”
“We were truly all the
same (brothers) -- because their
belief in one God had removed
the white from their minds, the
white from their behavior, and
the white from their attitude.”
“I could see from this
that perhaps if white Americans could accept the Oneness
of God, then perhaps too, they
could accept in reality the Oneness of Man -- and cease to measure, and hinder, and harm others in terms of their differences’
in color.”
“With racism plaguing America like an incurable
cancer, the so-called Christian’
white American heart should be
more receptive to a proven solution to such a destructive problem. Perhaps it could be in time
to save America from imminent
disaster -- the same destruction
brought upon Germany by racism that eventually destroyed the
Germans themselves.”
“Each hour here in the
Holy Land enables me to have
greater spiritual insights into
what is happening in America
between black and white. The
American Negro never can be
blamed for his racial animosities
-- he is only reacting to four hundred years of the conscious racism of the American whites. But
as racism leads America up the
suicide path, I do believe, from
the experiences that I have had
with them, that the whites of the
younger generation, in the col-
leges and universities, will see
the handwriting on the walls and
many of them will turn to the
spiritual path of truth -- the only
way left to America to ward off
the disaster that racism inevitably must lead to.”
“Never have I been
so highly honored. Never have
I been made to feel more humble and unworthy. Who would
believe the blessings that have
been heaped upon an American
Negro?’”
“A few nights ago,
a man who would be called in
America a white man, a United
Nations diplomat, an ambassador, a companion of kings,
gave me his hotel suite, his bed.
Never would I have even though
of dreaming that I would ever
be a recipient of such honors -honors that in America would be
bestowed upon a King -- not a
Negro.”
“All praise is due
to Allah, the Lord of all the
Worlds.”
Thus my friends, I

X but the glory belongs to Allah only. Thus let us study a few
verses of the Book, also known
to us as “The Guide and the Criterion,” what we commonly call
Quran revealed to Prophet Mohammad (P) over a 23- year period, still unchanged after 1,400
years, still being read by over a
billion people and memorized
by thousands. It continues to
influence the life and morale of
Muslims.
Quran says “O you
mankind! We have created you
from a single pair of male and
female and made you into nations and tribes so that you know
each other (not despise each other). Verily the most honored in
the sight of Allah is the one who
is most righteous” (49:13).
Quran also says “O
you who believe! Be the main-
tainers of justice and bearers of
witness for Allah’s sake though
it be against your own self, parents and relatives” (4:135).
And it also says “O
you believe, stand out firmly for
Allah as witness to fair dealing
and let not the hatred of others
incite you to act unjustly. Be
just that is next to piety and fear
Allah for Allah is well aware of
what you do” (5:8).
Thus it is clear that
above verses of Quran guided
Malcolm X to righteousness,
justice, giving up hate of white
people, and standing up to his
own godfather on moral issues.
When Malcolm X left
the Nation and embraced the
true Islam, he was responding to
the call of Islam. “O you believe,
enter into Islam wholeheartedly
and do not follow the footstep of
Satan as he is your open enemy”
(2:208).
So was Malcolm X a
militant Black nationalist or a
true Muslim leader? Only history will decide. Islam erases
the past as it did to that of Caliph Umar bin Khattab who was
a violent man before accepting
Islam.
After Hajj, if one’s
Hajj is accepted, all previous
sins are forgiven and one becomes pure like a newborn baby.
After Hajj, two good things can
happen to a Muslim - one is to
live a life of righteousness for
the rest of his or her life or not to
live long in this world of temptation and to fall prey to wrong.
Malcolm X got both of them.
Thus let us bury the
Malcolm before Hajj and keep
the El Hajj Malik Shabaz alive.
Quran says “call not those who
are slain in the way of Allah as
dead, nay they are living, only
you perceive it not” (2:154).

significant government interest, it must be narrowly tailored, and it must leave open

that Cleveland’s regulatory
aims are presented on the face
of the ordinance – to safeguard
public health, to protect against
violence and criminal activity,
to conserve city resources, and
to preserve property. According to the majority, those reasons “serve a significant government interest.”
Is the ordinance narrowly tailored? The court of
appeals held that it was not
sufficiently narrow and that the
“permit’s requirement serves
as an unreasonable ban and
has the purpose of eliminating
peaceful speech.”
But the majority of
our court determined that since
the ordinance doesn’t ban
public expression within the
Square 24 hours a day, and because late night/early morning
activity is possible with a permit, the ordinance is narrowly
tailored to serve its significant
government interest.
As to the “alternative
avenues of communication”
requirement – the ordinance
leaves open a reasonable opportunity for speech because
it expressly excludes “all dedicated streets, public sidewalks
adjacent to dedicated streets
and…bus shelters within this
area.” Consequently, the majority stated, “the protestors
could have simply moved off
the grass and onto the public sidewalks surrounding the
Public Square. They had unre-
stricted access to the sidewalks
adjacent to Public Square and
had 17 hours in which they
could have been in the square
without a permit.”
Therefore, according
to the majority, the ordinance
permits alternative channels of
communication and thus satisfies that requirement.
I cast the dissenting
vote. It’s quite clear that the
Cleveland ordinance is unconstitutional under the federal
Constitution because it is not
narrowly tailored to further a
significant government interest. One obvious example is
enough to put the lie to the
majority’s conclusion to the
contrary.
McCardle was arrested and charged with violating the ordinance because
she remained in Public Square
without a permit between 10
p.m. and 5 a.m. The city asserts, and a majority of our
court believes, that the ordinance is necessary to “safeguard public health, to protect
against violence and criminal
activity, to conserve city resources, and to preserve property.”
And yet the ordinance wouldn’t prohibit 1,000
Ohioans, or foreigners for that
matter, from marching from
one side of the square to the
other, over and over, all night,
as long as they do not remain
in Public Square.
How can an ordinance that prohibits one person from remaining in Public
Square be considered narrowly
tailored to serve a significant
government interest when the
same ordinance allows 1,000
people or 100 or one person to
walk back and forth through
the park all night? It defies
logic
The ordinance is, in
fact, not narrowly tailored to
further a significant government interest. Therefore, I dissented.

Retirement planning can face derailment
after a divorce. Married,
two-income couples have
the advantage of splitting
living expenses and pooling all their investment assets, including retirement
accounts. Once the marriage is over, costs for separate households may limit
the ability of ex-spouses to
keep their retirement on
track.
After a divorce,
individuals generally walk
away with a share of joint
retirement assets based on
how they negotiate that
split. However, returning
to singlehood means the
end of shared expenses
with housing, food, transportation and related expenses now being paid
out of one wallet, not two.
This can mean considerably less money to direct
toward retirement and
other savings and investments.
To assure a comfortable retirement, many
experts advise individuals to save and invest over
time so they can live annually on at least 70 percent
of their pre-retirement in-
come. Divorcing couples
should retain separate
qualified financial experts
to assure an equitable split
of assets and a continuing
plan to build a solid retirement in single life.
Here are a few
steps to reset one’s retirement goals after divorce.
Gather a personal
finance team. It’s a good
idea to hire a financial professional to offer advice
on all relevant financial,
investment, tax, estate
and retirement details of
a divorce negotiation. Afterward, individuals may
continue with these advisors or interview new
ones. Personal referrals
are best, but the following
resources may help:
The
Certified
Planner Board of Standards; the Association for
Financial Counseling and
Planning Education; the
Financial Planning Association; and your state
CPA society.
Budget. Spending
priorities can change after
a divorce. Newly divorced
spouses should track all
new spending diligently
so they can reset their
budget for retirement.

Ohio legacy trusts protect assets
Q: What is an Ohio
Legacy Trust (OLT)?
A: The Ohio Legacy Trust (OLT), also known
as a “domestic asset protection trust” (DAPT), is an estate-planning tool used to protect
assets from future creditors.
Ohio is one of 14 states in the
United States that allow DAPT
trusts. A person (the “trustmaker”) can create an OLT,
fund the trust with his or her
own assets, and be a beneficiary of the trust. Future creditors
cannot access the trustmaker’s
OLT assets if the trust was properly formed.
Q: How do I create an
Ohio Legacy Trust?
A: To be valid, an
Ohio Legacy Trust must: 1) be
in writing; 2) appoint an Ohio
trustee; 3) be irrevocable; 4)
have a “spendthrift” clause
(making the trustee responsible
for distributions so that trust
beneficiaries cannot assign
trust assets and creditors cannot access trust assets); and 5)
be subject to Ohio law. At the
time your assets are contributed
to the OLT, a “solvency affidavit” is also signed; it states that
you are and will still be solvent
after contributing your assets to
the OLT.
Q: How might I use
an Ohio Legacy Trust?
A: An OLT is an estate planning and/or business
planning tool. Normally an
OLT includes estate planning
distribution provisions for your
heirs and beneficiaries similar
to those of a will or revocable
trust. An OLT does not replace a will, heath care power of
attorney, living will, financial
power of attorney or revocable
trust, and you must coordinate
the OLT’s terms and provisions
with your other estate and business planning tools. Typically,
OLT beneficiaries will include you (the trustmaker), your
spouse and your children, but
you can also name a charity,
grandparent, parent or friends
as beneficiaries.
Q: How does an Ohio
Legacy Trust differ from a revocable trust?
A: Unlike a revocable trust, the Ohio Legacy
Trust is irrevocable (cannot
be changed). Also, because
you give up control of your
OLT assets to an independent
trustee, you should put only a
small percentage of your assets or your excess assets, in
the OLT. The assets should
not be encumbered by personal guarantees, liens, claims
or lawsuits.
Q: Who can form an
Ohio Legacy Trust (OLT)?
A: Any adult, business, corporation, out of state
resident or out of state business can form an OLT.
Q: What kinds of assets can I place in an OLT?
A: Investment or
financial accounts, mutual
funds, investment real estate,
shares of stock, LLC membership interests, artwork or
personal property can be put
into an OLT. IRAs and retirement accounts cannot be
put into an OLT. Also, make
sure the assets are titled in the
name of the OLT.
Q: How are OLT
trust asset distributions made?
A: You ask the independent trustee, in writing,
for a distribution. Normally
there is no limit to amount or
the number of times you can
request a distribution, but you
can request a distribution only
if: 1) proper steps were taken
to form and fund the OLT; 2)
the independent trustee has
custody and control of the
OLT assets; and 3) 18 months
have passed without any threatened, existing or filed claims
against you or the trustee.
Q: Must the OLT’s
independent trustee grant my
distribution request?
A: No. The trustee
can refuse to distribute your
OLT assets. This can be frustrating, but it helps to protect
your OLT assets from creditor
claims.
Q: Can any creditors
access OLT assets?
A: If properly
formed, and the required
time period has passed (18
months) with no claims, future unknown creditors cannot
access funds in the OLT. Ohio
law does provide exceptions to
this rule for child and spousal
support (alimony).
Q: How much can I
put into an OLT?
A: Generally, you can
fund your OLT with assets not
needed for monthly bills, loan
payments, expenses or longer-term debts. Because OLT
distributions are made by an
independent trustee, you may
not be able to get your money
out, so don’t put in more than
you can afford to lose.
Q: Who can be an
OLT trustee?
A: An independent
trustee should not be related
to or under the control of the
trustmaker or any of the beneficiaries. Independent trustees
may include, for example,
corporate bank trustees, institutional trustees, professional
trustees, accountants, attorneys
or financial planners.
Q: Does a trustmaker
need an attorney to form an
OLT?
A: Yes. Because the
formation of OLTs involve, giving up rights to assets, creditors’ rights, beneficiary rights
and tax and estate planning
issues, it is wise to engage an
attorney experienced in OLT
matters.

James passes Scottie Pippen in assists
LeBron James became the most prolific passing
forward in NBA league history on Tuesday, topping Hall of
Famer Scottie Pippen for the most career assists by an NBA
forward during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 102-93 win over the
Detroit Pistons. James’ pass that led to a Kevin Love 3-pointer in the second quarter gave James five assists on the night
and 6,136 for his career, passing Pippen’s mark of 6,135.
James finished the night with a game-high 11 assists. The
accomplishment comes on the heels of James passing Allen
Iverson for No. 22 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list Sunday
in a win over the New York Knicks.

The Cavaliers beat
the Wizards on the last regular season game, on Fan Appreciation Day on Wednesday
night, 113-108 in overtime.

crowd was treated to an exciting game, was similar in his
post-game commentary. He
said, “The best part of it was
a lot of guys that spent most
of the year primarily in practice, got a chance to get out
there and play serious minutes and contribute and help

Another good thing
was that the Cavs got to show
some muscle. Coach Blatt
has previously brought up
his concern that some of the
hard fouls on James should
be given more scrutiny. Kendrick Perkins, who played
for over 27 minutes, got into
a tiff with Wizard big man
Kevin Seraphim, and both
received technical fouls. Perkins showed he will not back
down and other teams will
take notice that Perkins will
have James’ back and those
of his teammates.
Pundits had been
pointing to a “dream” Cavs
vs. Heat series, but Miami
didn’t make the grade. So,
it’s of head-shaking coincidence to see that the Cavs
first playoff foe will be the
Celtics, who were their final
playoff opponent in 2010, the
last time they made the postseason. Of course, that was
followed by James’ whole
messy “Decision” fiasco.
This will be even more of a
chance at redemption.
This time around,
everybody appears to be
focused on the same thing
- winning an NBA Championship. James has made his

“NBA’s destination location,”
as players who would have
previously bypassed the franchise, instead eagerly signed
contracts to get on board.

Tribe finally wins home game against Chicago
After starting the
year with such promise, the
Indians pitching staff fell on
hard times during their opening homestand. They gave
up an average of over seven
runs per game in four losses –
three to the Tigers and one to
the White Sox. Fortunately,
they won their first game of
the year at Progressive Field
on Jackie Robinson Day on
Wednesday, beating Chicago,
The Tribe’s chances were improved by the
fact that Trevor Bauer was
Wednesday’s starting pitcher.
Bauer had thrown six innings
of no-hit ball and struck out
11 against Houston before
being removed after reaching
111 pitches. The Bullpen ultimately gave up the first hit
and run in the 9th inning of
that 5-1 Tribe victory.

Players to go to NBA
Well, it’s time again
to argue about the validity
NBA’s “early exit,” or “oneand-done” rule, where a player
must play at least one season of
college basketball (many times
it’s just one) before declaring
for the NBA Draft. Everyone
is always pointing a finger at
Kentucky Coach John Calipari - elected just this year to
the Naismith Basketball Hall
of Fame – because he’s been
the poster child of the one-anddone. He goes out and gets a
player to suit up in UK (for-
ing so. If only every other
member of the Indians was as
much of a perfectionist and
as meticulous as that, they’d
have very little trouble winning.
For the even more
important aspect of the day,
players of color from each
team were asked about the
special significance of Jackie
Robinson Day. Its celebrated
each year, on April 15, as
every member of MLB’s 30
teams, dons a uniform with
Robinson’s No. 42 on it in to
honor the player who broke
baseball’s color barrier in
1947.
Carlos
Santana,
who leads the Indians in hitting, succinctly told Minority
Publishers Assn., “If not for
Jackie Robinson, Latin players, we won’t be here. Thank
you for him. I remember him
all of my life. If not for him,
I’m not here.”
Emilio Bonifacio,
who started Chicago’s shortlived 9th inning rally with a
pinch-hit walk against Cody
Allen, said, “What he did was
very important. He gave the
chance for black players, Latin players, to be in this game.
You are here (MLB) because
you can play not how you
look.”
Jerry Sands, who
had played with the Dodgers organization in the NL
for two years, was also asked
about Robinson’s significance. He said, “Obviously
he did a lot for the game. I
had the privilege of meeting
guys in the Dodger organization, like Don Newcomb and
Maury Wills, who go back to
when Jackie played. I talk-
ed to Don who said what
a special man he was and
how brave he had to be to
deal with all of the problems that he had to face all
of the time.”
It’s important that
we continue to remember
Jackie Robinson and remember the Indians’ Larry
Doby in the AL, along with
other barrier-breakers, because there are still closet
haters who try to conceal
their toxic venom. Happily, it’s getting harder for
them and easier for those
on the side of the righteous.
Boxing Nostalgia

James J. Woody had an up and down career
Although he ended his career losing almost
as many bouts as he won.
One time in the mid-1960’s
heavyweight James J. Woody
was considered a fine prospect.
He was a southpaw
from the Bronx who had
his first professional fight
in 1964. He reeled off ten
straight wins against better
then average competition.
He twice defeated
Lou Hicks and also the giant
James J. Beattie a couple of
times.
He also won a duet
from Everett Copeland and
outscored Tony Doyle.
He suffered his first
loss to the crafty Johnny Persol in 1966. That began years
of winning a few and losing a
few more for Woody.
At times he was
good enough to beat decent
fighters like Dante Cane,
Roger Russell and Charlie
“Emperor” Harris.
At other times he
was overmatched at that
stage in his career against
contenders Manuel Ramos,
Brian London and Big Buster
Mathis losing to all three.
On April 17, 1970,
he faced the feared Olympian
George Foreman. The undefeated future two time world
champion was impressive
bombing out Woody in the
third round.
In his next bout
Woody faced the highly regarded Oscar Bonavena and
was stopped in five rounds.
Later that year Bonavena
would meet the comebacking
Muhammad Ali in their classic encounter.
Woody
would
bounce back into the win column with a pair of decision
victories over the hexed Tony
Doyle.Those would be his
last victories.
In 1971, Woody
would prove he was no
chump as he went the distance in rugged bouts with
top contenders Jose Luis Garcia, Ken Norton and in 1972
to Henry Clark.
Although he lost all
three they were all competitive. Especially the Norton
fight.
He met Norton again
in 1972 and Kenny halted
Woody in eight rounds.
In 1973 James was
toppled in two rounds by the
comebacking Jerry Quarry.
In 1974, Woody
was halted by Bob Stallings.
He returned two
years later on the Ali-Norton
III undercard at Yankee Stadium in his hometown the
Bronx.
There he was taken
out in three rounds by up and
coming Bernardo Mercado.

“The Gospel of Percy

According to his

Sledge was asked to perform

Percy Sledge, who
sang, "When A Man Loves a
Woman," lost his battle with
liver cancer on Tuesday in
Louisiana. He was 74.
Sledge hit the
charts with what became
his signature song, "When
a Man Loves a Woman,"
which charted at number 1
on the pop and soul charts
in 1966. The song was
awarded a million-selling,
Gold-certified disc from the
RIAA.
Leighton, Alabama, worked
in a series of agricultural jobs
in the fields in Leighton before taking a job as an orderly
at Colbert County Hospital in
Sheffield, Alabama.
He developed as a
vocalist by singing in the local gospel choir.

Preparation time: 25 minutes
3 firm USA Pears, such
as Bosc, Anjou, Red Anjou or
Concorde
2 cans (14 ounces
each) coconut milk
½ cup packed dark
brown sugar
3 whole star anise pods
2 cups Greek yogurt,
divided
1 cup granola, divided
Peel and halve the
pears, and scoop out their cores
using a spoon. In a medium
saucepan over low heat, warm
coconut milk, sugar and anise
until sugar is dissolved. Submerge the pears in the coconut
milk. Cover and cook for 2025 minutes, keeping the heat at
low to prevent burning the coconut milk, until the pears are
just tender when pierced with
a fork. Gently stir the mixture
every 8-10 minutes to prevent
scorching. Once tender, remove
the pears and let cool slightly.
Remove the sweetened, spiced
coconut milk from heat and set
aside.
Spoon ⅓ cup Greek
yogurt into 6 serving bowls, and
sprinkle 2 tablespoons of granola atop each bowl. Place one
poached pear half in each bowl.
Spoon 1 tablespoon of the poaching sauce over the top and serve.
Refrigerate any leftover pears in
the reserved coconut milk.

Coleman Hawkins
Mention tenor saxophone stylists today and
Coleman Hawkins is the first
name that comes up. He was
a pioneer whose full-bodied warm tones and buoyant
rhythmic feel have inspired
countless jazz musicians since
the 1930's.
Hawkins was born in
St. Joseph, Mo. in 1904. His
music studies began on piano,
cello and, by age nine, tenor.
He gained fame as a
soloist for his first recordings
with Fletcher Henderson's
band in 1923. He left the band
in 1934 to perform and record
in Europe with Benny Carter,
Django Reinhardt and others.
In 1939, he returned
to the U.S., formed a nine
piece band (until 1941) which
recorded his biggest, "Body
& Soul," and, then a nationally recognized artist, he assembled the band for the first
bop record session (on Apollo)
in 1944.
Hawkins continued
to tour internationally and to
record with major jazz luminaries until the late 1960s. By
then, his health was declining
due to heavy drinking. He
died on May 19, 1969 of bronchial pneumonia in New York
City's Wickersham Hospital.
Hawkins was the
most influential person in the
evolution of the tenor saxophone, enjoying great artistic
and commercial success and
the first tenorman to creatively
reconstruct ballads. He was
considered a legend in his own
time and is still admired today
for his extraordinary artistry.

he made are still available.


'He's Got Game' serves as forgiveness and redemption

Denzel Washington
has appeared in more of black
filmmaker Spike Lee’s movies
than any other American actor. His first starring role was
in Mo’ Better Blues (1990) as
a jazz musician with two girlfriends. In the epic Malcolm
X (1992), he portrayed the legendary civil rights leader. And,
in Inside Man (2006), he was a
detective assigned to mediate a
hostage crisis at a bank.
In Malcolm X, Washington’s lead role encompassed
a character who was once a
criminal but later changed his
personality to become a positive force. There is another
motion-picture of Spike Lee’s
that has Washington portray
a ‘morally-grey’ protagonist
who is complex because
he is neither ‘all-good’ or ‘allevil’. It was in He Got Game
(1998).
The story starts with
a montage of basketball players, of all races, around the
country, to show the popular
universality of the sport itself.
In Attica prison, Warden Wyatt
(Ned Beatty)tells inmate Jake
Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington) that he’s aware that
Jake’s son, Jesus (Ray Allen) is
the #1 high-school draft pick.
The warden promises Jake that
if he can convince Jesus to enroll at Big State University (the
governor’s alma mater), that
Jake’s sentence will be reduced
greatly. Jake agrees to try to
talk to his son, only having one
week before Jesus must publically decide which college to
attend.
Two parole officers,
African-American Spivey (Jim
Brown) and Caucasian Crudup
(Joseph Lyle Taylor) are assigned to ‘shadow’ Jake while
he is ‘free’. In the projects
of Coney Island, New York,
Jesus is a senior at Abraham
Lincoln High School and the
star of the ‘Railsplitter’s’ basketball team. He lives alone
with his younger sister, Mary
(Zelda Harris) and not far from
his Uncle Bubba (Bill Nunn),
Aunt Sally (Michele Shay)
and illiterate cousin ‘Booger’
(Hill Harper). Jesus also has a
Puerto-Rican girlfriend named
‘Lala’ (Rosario Dawson). Lala
tells Jesus that she wants him
to talk to an agent ‘friend’ of
hers even though it is illegal
for him to do so. And, while
his Lincoln coach asks him
if he’s made his decision yet,
Jesus tells him he still has to
‘weigh his options’. While
Jake stays at a run-down hotel,
he sees a black pimp, ‘Sweetness’ (Thomas Jefferson Byrd)
and a white prostitute, Dakota
(Milla Jojovich).
When Jake reunites
with Mary, she is happily surprised. But, when Jesus sees
his father, he angrily chastises
Mary for speaking to him at
all. Jesus rejects Jake with unbridled fury.
Back in the hotel, when Jake
overhears Sweetness physically abusing Dakota next door,
he talks to her later to console
her. Privately, while she tells
him about her life with Sweetness, he in turn confides in her
about killing Jesus’ and Mary’s
mother, Martha (Lonette
McKee). The next day, in his
red convertible, gangster Big
Time Willie (Roger Guenveur
Smith) takes Jesus and Booger
for a ride while ‘schoolin’ Jesus on the drugs, women and
beggars that come with celebrity fame.
The Lincoln coach
tries to bribe Jesus with more
money (he paid for Jesus’ and
Mary’s new apartment), in exchange for telling his college
choice early.
That night, Jesus and
Lala share a sexy love scene
while riding a Ferris wheel
with fireworks exploding in
the background.
The next day, Lala’s
friend has a sports agent try to
tempt Jesus to sign with him
by offering him expensive cars
and jewelry. In a flashback,
we see Jake driving 10-year
old Jesus too hard practicing
basketball. And, when Martha
tries to defend Jesus, Jake accidently causes her to hit her
head fatally.
When Jake meets
with Jesus on the boardwalk,
he tells Jesus that he really
named him after NBA player
Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe who
was called ‘Black Jesus’ of the
playgrounds. He finally con-
fesses that if Jesus goes to Big
State, then he’ll be released
on early parole. That weekend, during a campus tour of
Tech University, hoop teammate ‘Chick’ (Rick Fox) offers
two, blonde, white bedmates to
entice Jesus’ decision to come
to his institution. While Jesus
is out of town, Jake and Lala
have a confrontation between
themselves about who ‘really’
loves Jesus. Later that evening, Jake borrows some money from Spivey and Crudup to
pay Dakota for her ‘intimate
services’. When he comes
back home, Jesus and Lala argue and break-up over each
other’s infidelity.
The night before the
public announcement, Jake
plays a one-on-one game with
Jesus for Jesus to sign with
Big State to obtain his ultimate
freedom. Still angry and bitter with his dad, Jesus wins
the solo match and rubs Jake’s
nose in it to punish him for all
the times he pushed him so
hard as a kid.
Jake goes back to
prison. But, when Jesus publically declares his choice to attend Big State anyway, he believes he has saved his father.
Unfortunately, the Attica warden tricks Jake by saying that
since Jesus didn’t technically
sign the papers to attend the
college, his decision doesn’t
really ‘count’.
So, even
though Jake remains behind
bars, both he and his son have
now renewed their previously
shattered relationship. In short
clips, we also see that Booger
finally gets tutorial help to increase his literacy and that Dakota leaves on a bus (possibly
going back home to her family).
In the end, He Got
Game not only serves as a film
about a man seeking forgiveness and redemption through
his son. With the name, ‘Jesus’, for the main character,
the movie is a metaphorical
vehicle to display the almost
god-like status some professional athletes are worshipped
and how much inner faith and
moral fortitude they must have
to resist the multitude of temptations that could easily take
them down and ruin them.

“We are using every known resource to reach every member of our class,” said Ms.
Copeland; “and for those residing in the Cleveland area, we have been hosting “meet and
greets” and planning fundraising events for classmates and trying to get as much feedback as possible on what to include in our 50-year anniversary celebration.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the planning process.
Committee members have tentatively scheduled the anniversary for the latter half of
September 2016, although the location and exact date must still be determined.
We encourage you to email Ms. Copeland for the dates and times of committee meetings.
