“Nostalgia”
Recently I was going through some old GWRRA paperwork and came upon some old member information and pictures. There were pictures of faces I had not seen in a long time. There were pictures of
members attending events in numbers that made you proud. I think sometimes we all forget the impact
that we and our friends make on others. We’re spending time together to just have fun and every once
in a while we also manage to make things better. We have attended rallies, birthday parties, taken vacations, held mall shows, pool parties and made unforgettable friends. All these things make us who we
are and show what we want to do.
As a group, Chapter W2 has always tried to be a leader. We volunteer whenever and wherever we are
wanted. We’ve helped others when our help has been needed, all the while having fun whenever possible. Making memories is almost the most important thing to us all.
This month we are having more opportunities to make more memories. We’re riding up to Niehaus for
the 30th annual Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days on May 15th. Then on the 18th a fabulous meal
awaits you at the Tap House Pub & Patio. And what would you say to a ride up north to the Mark
Twain area on the 22nd? But wait, we aren’t done with May memories yet. There’s one more event to
remember. This one is to show support and encourage others on their “Ride For The Wall.” The
RFTW is a ride of remembrance for POW/MIA/KIA military personnel from all military actions starting in California and appropriately ending at the Wall in Washington, DC on Memorial Day. The riders
come through St. Louis and stop at the VFW hall in Wentzville on May 23.
Then in June comes the piece de resistance. The Missouri District Rally in Branson Missouri will be
held June 2-5 at the Southern Oaks/Angel Inn Motels. Chapter W2 has volunteered to man the registration tent on Saturday morning from 9am to noon. All this and more, can be yours if the Price is Right –
oh wait! Too much day-time T.V. and I’m not Drew Carey! lol Seriously though, there’s lots of opportunities this month to make and share memories. I hope you’re able to come be with us for at least
one of these events. There will be more information shared at our Meeting on Monday, or you can
check out our website.
Enrico and Linda Della Croce have set up a bike display and blessing on June 11 at Friendship Village
Chesterfield. There will be a DJ, places to sit, food trucks and we have been invited to show off our
motorcycles. It has been a while since we have had a mall show or bike show. All chapters are welcome, bring your chapter banner. They want to know who we are. Here is another opportunity to get
out the motorcycle, clean it up, make sure all the lights are working and display it proudly. We get to
talk with the folks and share the beauty that is a Honda Gold Wing and why we love riding them so
much. So come on out and lets show the residents of Friendship Village and their family and friends
what GWRRA is all about. Our GWRRA experience may have started with the motorcycle but it is
really all about the members.
“If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, take a look back every
now and then to make sure it’s still there.”

BEING PREPARED
Being prepared to ride is particularly important to us as riders/co-riders. What
do we mean by being prepared?
First, is your motorcycle prepared? Are the tires properly inflated and with sufficient tread? Are the brakes in good working order? How about the lights?
The brake lights? The turn signals? All these are critical to the safe operation
of the motorcycle.
Next, how about you? Are you well rested? Do you have the right frame of
mind, or is something weighing on your mind? Are you taking any medications
that might make you drowsy? Haven’t been drinking, have you? Riding requires your FULL attention! Anything that diminishes your ability to pay attention to the task, limits your ability to safely operate your bike/trike.
Then, how about your emergency skills? When is the last time that you practiced emergency maneuvers? Things like swerving to avoid an obstacle in your
path of travel? How about emergency stopping? In about 13% of motorcycle
crashes, the rider made NO attempt to avoid the crash! No swerving, no braking, just rode right into the collision! Unfortunately, most riders never practice
emergency maneuvers.
Do you consciously practice your other riding skills? You know, things like
scanning for road hazards, looking through turns, covering your controls as you
approach congested areas, positioning yourself so you are as visible as possible,
etc. While all these things and more should be “second nature”, focusing on
them while you’re riding, reinforces the action.
To ride smart and stay safe, remember the Boy Scout motto, “Be Prepared!”
