The andprint Headlines Issue 9: 13th November 2015 On Monday this week the Music Faculty staged their Autumn Concert in the SandPit Theatre. It was a wonderful display of music from different genres with many exceptional performances. One of the real pleasures of the Autumn Concert is that we start to see new students involved, and can follow their progress in music throughout the year at each successive concert. I would like to congratulate all the students involved and offer a very big thank you to Ms Stothard and the music staff for preparing this concert. This week we have been preparing students for Remembrance Day. Mr Leat, Director of Learning for History delivered some wonderful assemblies and the whole school gathered at the front of the school to mark the occasion with a two minute silence. James Allen in Year 11 played the Last Post in what was a very moving event. I would like to thank all the students for being so respectful. Next week, we are delighted to welcome two very special visitors to the school, Mr Jallow who is the principal of Farafenni Senior Secondary High School together with the Chair of Governors, Mrs Kinteh. As a reminder, we have developed a very strong link with Farafenni Senior Secondary High School in the Gambia, West Africa. The link is now in its seventh year during which time there have been annual trips of staff, and more recently students between the two schools. The link is primarily a curriculum link to support the development of teaching and learning across the two institutions, but we have also been involved in some support work including the construction of a large hall at the school. Next spring a group of eleven students and three staff will travel to Farafenni to formally open this new building, and to celebrate this wonderful new facility in the Gambia. I would like to thank Mrs Lyons for starting this important international link and overseeing all of the trips. Those who have been to the school this week will have noticed the latest building work to improve main reception. Whilst this work is going on, main reception has been re-located to D-block. New signage is up to show you the way. Payments to the school We appreciate at times that the process for payments at the school may be confusing so we are working on streamlining the process and moving the majority of payments to ParentPay. From time to time this may not be possible but we will endeavour to do so in most cases. We will therefore be sending reminders of logon details, for those parents that have not activated their ParentPay account, with your child’s report when they are distributed next week. If you have activated your account but need a reminder of your login details then please contact Ros Ellis in the Finance team. Also for the first time we will be moving the payment for Christmas Lunch to ParentPay. We hope this will be easier for parents and avoid any confusion as to whether their son/daughter’s lunch has been paid for. The evening featured all the extra-curricular groups in the school as well as a performance from 7B, the winners of our Last Choir Standing competition in October. The Show Choir opened the evening with their own arrangement of Like I'm Gonna Lose You and the music from then on was a wide range of styles, including Holst's Mars performed by the Sinfonia, Palladio from the String Quartet, rock from our Rock School, jazz arrangements from our three jazz ensembles and the list goes on! Uptown Funk was the big finale and featured all the singers from the evening accompanied by the fantastic Jazz Band. The event featured over 130 musicians and we are tremendously proud of them all so well done to everyone involved. Carol Service Our Carol Service is on Monday 14th December and will be held in St Leonard's Church in Sandridge. Students involved will be getting information on their rehearsals and a letter about arrangements for the day, next week. Goals from Yapp (2), Fox, McShane and Riddell in a fantastic performance that saw the team outplay their opposition and move into the next round. The draw will be made soon and again demonstrates the standard that our girls are playing at this year. Well done! Well done to the Yr 11 Girls Football team after their tight win on Monday v The Rydens School in the National Cup. This is a huge achievement as it puts the girls into the last 32 school teams in the country. This is another great achievement for girls football at the school and as of this week all girls’ teams are currently unbeaten and still in both County Cups and National Cups in all age groups. The Yr 8 boys football team went out of the National Cup on Monday after a 4-0 defeat to Kings Langley. The boys started well, however after Kings Langley scored their first goal the team found it hard to get back into the game. The Yr 7 boys had more luck in the National Cup 3rd round with a 2-1 win in extra time over Alameda Middle School from Bedfordshire with goals from Ben Wick and Ryan O’Sullivan. The draw for the 4th round will be out soon. On Tuesday, the Yr 11 netball team without a number of key players won 29-1 v Loreto. Michelle Irwin was excellent and was awarded the player of the match after her performance. The Yr 10 team also playing Loreto lost 6-4 with a great display from Frankie Boost. Well done to all of the girls who played on Tuesday and hopefully those girls that were unable to play on Tuesday can re-join the squads for the next game. Congratulations to Andre Raath on being selected for the Hertfordshire County tennis team who had to play in the prestigious yearly 12 Counties team event. This event takes place over a course of time with an ultimate team winning the overall competition. 2014/2015 was won by Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire plays in Division 1 and had to face, Cambridge, Yorkshire and Essex. Three very strong counties. Hertfordshire 12U boys team got the county to a good start and won convincingly beating all 3 counties with the 4 boys that were selected for the team. It was a tough day, and a bit like a National event with 7/16 boys who played that day, being the top 20 boys in the country.
