Sieur du Lhut
(1639-1710)
A Leader
Every community has its leaders; ours is no different. Sieur du Lhut was a
fearless explorer–a pilot of adventure–bringing with him to the New World a
thirst for something different, something better. In June of 1679, his expedition
brought him to the head of Lake Superior, to what is now the city in his name:
Duluth. Sieur du Lhut was a rugged man, no doubt, and a noble man as well.
He possessed the qualities of a diplomat, a statesman and a visionary. He was
admired for his courage, valor and fortitude.
Sieur du Lhut was a leader in the purest sense of the word, and leadership is what
we share with him.
A Vision
Our vision, through the Sieur du Lhut Society, is a United Way with greater
strength, larger purpose, character and ensured longevity. Together, we have the
resources and ability to realize our vision.
We have the motivation and the means to provide for others. We see a way to
make a difference.
The Sieur du Lhut Society is made up of people who care about our community.
People who live by example. People who share a vision.

A Reason
Sieur du Lhut
For Sieur du Lhut, the reason to explore was the need to see beyond the horizon.
For us, the reason to give is a desire to actively create hope for the future of our
community.
There is personal satisfaction in giving. There is even greater satisfaction in
knowing that each and every contribution helps to ensure opportunity for those
in need.
We appreciate your responding to the need to give and living up to the legacy of a
leader through your Sieur du Lhut membership.
Create hope for

Sieur du Lhut
With an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, Sieur du Lhut contributors
significantly increase the ability of United Way of Greater Duluth to actively
address critical needs in our community by strategically investing in four key
areas:
ɶɶ
ɶɶ
ɶɶ
ɶɶ
Education - Fostering Successful Children & Youth
Income - Promoting Financial Stability & Independence
Health - Increasing Access to Health Care
Basic Needs - Ensuring a Strong Network of Basic Human Services
Last year, leadership giving continued to be a significant part of our annual
fundraising campaign, representing 32% of the total dollars raised.
ɶɶ Our community’s future rests with leaders like you – people who see the big
picture and are willing to share part of themselves with their neighbors. We
ask you to accept the challenge, make the commitment, and set a leadership
example for others to follow.
ɶɶ As a caring community leader, you gain the personal satisfaction of knowing
that your contribution makes a positive impact on our community’s most
pressing needs.
Thank You for Giving
We gratefully acknowledge members of our Sieur du Lhut Society. Every
contributor is a leader in our community, demonstrating compassion and passion.
Leadership donors come from all walks of life – those with an exceptionally
generous spirit, a desire to step forward and act on that spirit, and a well-placed trust
in United Way of Greater Duluth. They believe that leading by example will inspire
friends, peers, and associates to also step forward – to support what matters and
make a difference in the lives of those who live in the Greater Duluth area.

ives
In addition to funding over 50 local agencies and programs, United
Way has been instrumental in launching the following initiatives:
ɶɶ United Way 2-1-1 provides people with information and referrals to community
resources for human service needs. This easy-to-remember phone number is
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Way’s Success by 6® Initiative collaborates to build support for
children during the formative years that influence their entire lives - from birth
to age six so children are ready to succeed when they enter school.
ɶɶ United
ɶɶ Smiles Across Minnesota - Duluth provides preventive dental services to low-
income, uninsured and underinsured children ages three to twelve in the Duluth
Public Elementary Schools, Middle Schools and Head Start Centers.
Way of Greater Duluth Volunteer Center serves as a community
resource to support and promote effective volunteerism and connects volunteers
with opportunities.
ɶɶ United
Superior Initiative, overseen in part by United Way of Greater Duluth,
was a three-year, federally-funded program to increase efficiency, effectiveness
and capability of our region’s community organizations.
ɶɶ Lake
Library, a book program that delivers one book each month to
children in our area from birth to age 5. There is no cost to the family thanks
to United Way of Greater Duluth and donors who support our efforts.

United Way Endowment Fund accepts gifts and provides a continuing
source of revenue, separate from the annual campaign, for addressing community
needs. In addition, through wills and estate plans, many give annual recognition
gifts as memorials.
ɶɶ Gifts
may include cash, securities, trusts, life insurance or property.
Arrangements may provide immediate income or revenue that will come to
United Way of Greater Duluth at some future time. Regardless of the amount
of the gift, or the manner in which it is given, gifts through wills and estate
plans represent the greatest single source of financial support for the future of
United Way’s work.
ɶɶ Gifts
to the United Way Endowment Fund are carefully invested to provide a
legacy of support far beyond the lifetime of the giver. As the endowment gift
continues to grow, the donor’s tradition of caring is carried on from generation to
generation. In addition, many planned gifts provide substantial tax advantages
to the donor.
leave a legacy
ɶɶ Income from the United Way Endowment Fund supports programs that address
critical community needs and helps to build an even stronger community in
perpetuity. Through your generous gift, you can join others in this worthy
endeavor.
