With May as Arthritis Awareness Month, and as the school year draws to a close for our collegiate
chapters, and our alumnae chapters are breaking for the summer, I wanted to take the opportunity to say ‘THANKS’ to everyone for all that you do to raise funds for our philanthropy, the Arthritis Foundation. What we are doing in AOII through our
SOA! events is TREMENDOUS in the support of arthritis research grants and bringing joy to children with arthritis.
For me, the face of arthritis will always belong to Devon Kellar,
a childhood friend of my nephew. I met Devon when he was in
4th grade, and unfortunately, Devon lost his battle
with arthritis and the many side effects
this past February at the age of 37. As a
kid, Devon never wanted to be treated differently, even though his arthritis prevented him from going to school for all of his
5th and 8th grade years. One of my nephews would go to his house every day after
school for those school years to see how
he was doing and give him an update on
the day’s events (this was way before smart
phones!). Devon was always one of the guys,
and he never wanted his arthritis to prevent
him from doing the things he wanted to do
in life. He always had a smile on his face
(his motto was Smile Ear to Ear) and Devon
never let his arthritis get the best of him. I
will always keep Devon in my thoughts as we
continue to support arthritis research and the
juvenile arthritis events.

In our 47 years of fundraising for the Arthritis
Foundation, we continue to expand the visibility of AOII to raise awareness and support the
mission of conquering arthritis once and for
all. This year we will be partnering with MLB
affiliates for Fraternity SOA! events. Three are
completed and we have more opportunities
for our members and friends to attend North
America’s favorite summer pastime to support
arthritis. Here is a list of the completed and scheduled
SOA! baseball events:

- SOA! with the Chicago White Sox, May 10
- SOA! with the Seattle Mariners, May 29

Also, our annual collection of pandas at Convention
AOII Strike Out Arthritis! with the Cincinnat
and LI brings huge smiles to kids with arthritis at Jui Reds
venile Arthritis Camps and at the annual Juvenile Arthritis
Conference, where pandas are distributed every summer.
In our most recent announcement with the Arthritis Foundation, AOII was named as a national sponsor and partner for the
Arthritis Foundation 2014 Jingle Bell Run/ Walk for Arthritis spearheaded by our International President, Allison Allgier. Get
your running and walking shoes ready as this will be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our partnership with the Arthritis
Foundation and represent AOII at all of these events.
AOII’s are front and center in raising funds for arthritis, and remember that what we are doing has a positive impact on someone you may know or not know who has been stricken with arthritis.

Leadership Institute 2014 | “In Focus”
Hundreds of sisters will soon join us in Franklin, Tennessee on June 27 – 29 for
AOII’s 2014 Leadership Institute! Members of the Executive Board are excited
to meet all members participating in Leadership Institute 2014. We will have the
AOII Halftime Report (we will be halfway through the biennium) as part of Saturday’s program. Should time allow, we would like to gather questions you might
have for the board related to all things AOII. Submit your question to AskXB@
alphaomicronpi.org by June 1, 2014. We look forward to hearing from you!
Don’t forget your pandas!
AOII’s annual Panda Drive happens every summer at Convention or Leadership
Institute. The pandas collected at these events are distributed to the children
attending the Juvenile Arthritis Conference in July. Be sure to bring at least one
(or more!) furry friend with you as a donation - there are over 500 kids expected at
the JA Conference this year! A limited amount of pandas will also be available to
purchase on-site from the AOII Emporium.

Show your Forever Friendship.
AOII’s Forever Friends program is a wonderful way to say “thank you” to a sister
for all she contributes to AOII. You and each sister you honor through Forever
Friends will receive an invitation to a special reception at LI 2014 and will have
your names listed on the LI 2014 plaque, which will be hung at AOII International
Headquarters. Each honored sister will also receive a personalized certificate
recognizing both her and the sister who gave her the honor. The costs associated
with the Forever Friends program, $100 per honor, are utilized for chapter services
and membership experience support. If you have questions about the Forever
Friends program, please contact Rachel Boison at [email protected].

AOII Fraternity Events for 2014
Alpha Omicron Pi’s collegiate and alumnae chapters are dedicated to “Striking Out” arthritis, and we are amazed each year by the success
of our chapter events. Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity began expanding on our chapter-level events in 2011 with a Strike Out Arthritis! event
with the Atlanta Braves, and the response has been incredible! We are now planning over 15 Fraternity Strike Out Arthritis! events for
2014. The funds raised from the Fraternity’s Strike Out Arthritis! events are donated to the AOII Foundation’s Arthritis Fund, which is used
to assist the Arthritis Foundation in a variety of important ways. Check this list to see if an event is being planned near you, and email

Walk with us !
Every year, HUNDREDS of AOIIs participate in the Arthritis
Foundation’s signature event Walk to Cure Arthritis. This
event raises money for arthritis research, education and
awareness, and also brings us together for the cause Alpha
Omicron Pi so proudly supports! Chances are there is an
event happening near you. Check out the list of 2014 Walks
to find your nearest Walk and get registered today. It’s free
to participate, and fundraising can be as simple as asking
family and friends to contribute to your team!

Because AOII has such an impact on the Walk to
Cure Arthritis, we have our own National Team
that encompasses all of the AOII teams across the
series. To join an AOII team or to start one within
the National Team, follow the instructions provided
here by the Arthritis Foundation. There are also
special fundraising incentives just for AOIIs! Use the
hashtag #AOIIFightsArthritis as you post about your
Walk to Cure Arthritis experience, and send photos

Purchase your Rose Tributes
for LI 2014
Rose Tributes are a special way to honor your
sisters at Leadership Institute and help raise
money for the Loyalty Fund, the fund that
supports all Foundation programs. For each $5
contribution, you can send a sister a Rose Tribute - she will receive an acknowledgement card
and an embroidered rose for her name badge.
60 Scholarship Recipients Selected
Along with the AOII Foundation Scholarship Committee and Board, we are pleased to announce that 60 AOII
sisters were selected to collectively receive $176,500 for
2014-15! This is the largest amount we have awarded
to-date, and is only possible due to the increase of donations to the scholarship program.
Congratulations to all of our recipients, and we look
forward to once again increasing scholarship awards for
next year. We will make an official announcement of our
2014-15 scholarship recipients at Leadership Institute.

Rose Tributes can be purchased online for $5
each under Donate Now/Donate Online at
www.aoiifoundation.org. They can also be purchased by mail and throughout event registration. The Rose Tribute form must be mailed
or emailed to Leslie Davidson at ldavidson@

The One Thing You Must Do If You
Want to Be A Great Intern

Some days we strive for perfection. Some
days we strive for greatness. Some days
we just strive to not be completely
terrible. When it comes to your internship,
there is only one way to make sure you’re
an awesome intern:
Don’t act like an intern.
Stop and ask yourself, “Would an intern
do this?” If the answer is yes, don’t do that
thing. I’m not saying to refuse slightly
menial work–all of us have to file paperwork every now and again. I’m saying
look at how you act and position yourself
in the office, and try not to stick out like a
sore thumb.
An intern tends to ask too many
questions. If you have a question that
can be answered by a quick Google
search, try that first. If it’s something that
can’t be Googled, then reach out to your
supervisor or someone else who can help
you. Ask thoughtful questions. If you’re
not sure how to do something, admit it
and ask for help.
An intern forgets to take notes. It’s fine
to ask for clarification about something
you’re unsure of, but when things are
explained to you, take notes. That way
you can write up those notes, include
pictures or screenshots if possible, and
compile a manual for the next intern. In
the eyes of your employer, you just
became the most awesome intern ever.

An intern is quiet during meetings.
Sometimes it is important to sit back, write
some notes, and take time to understand
things. But if it’s possible to contribute
to the value of a meeting, do it. Don’t let
people forget you’re there. Pull a Sheryl
Sandberg and lean in, because your ideas
are relevant.
An intern only talks to other interns.
An internship is a valuable opportunity to
experience and dive into the culture of a
company. Don’t let the opportunity pass
by keeping to yourself or only talking to
the other interns. When your co-worker
gets into the elevator, ask him about his
plans for the weekend. Get coffee with
your boss and pick her brain about the
industry. Your employer will notice you
taking the initiative, and will start to
consider you an important part of office
life. This will work to your advantage if
you want to ask for a recommendation or
transition into full-time employment at the
company.
Keep in mind the goals of an internship–to
connect with professionals in your industry
and gain real-world experience. Don’t sell
yourself short by assuming you can only
bring so much to the table. If you act like
a full-time employee in terms of maturity
and the value you bring to the company,
people will treat you like a full-time
employee.
