Painting in Latin America, 1550-1820 is a comprehensive work that offers a rigorous and exhaustive
analysis of the different aspects that constitute art in Latin America from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Many years of research and travel have led Dr Jonathan Brown, the great art historian and distinguished
professor at New York University, to complete this monumental work ( almost 500 pages, generously illustrated with high quality illustrations ) on painting in Latin America between the 16th and 19th centuries,
working in collaboration with Dr Luisa Elena Alcalá. For Painting in Latin America, Doctors Brown and
Alcalá have brought together the leading experts in each period, field and artistic speciality. The aim is to
offer a lasting and definitive work that will be the key reference for all subsequent study of Latin American
painting in the early modern period. A long meditated project by Professor Brown, this immaculately prepared volume is a fundamental work that will occupy a leading position among the great texts published
by this renowned expert.
Painting in Latin America is aimed at a broad public in Europe and South America but it will be particularly well received among international academics, historians and experts, offering them a definitive
study that will generate enormous interest in their academic field.

project singled him out as one of the principal designers of interiors in the town, where he decorated the
homes of numerous families and prominent figures in the social, aristocratic and intellectual circles of
Marbella and its coastline. Jaime Parladé has also worked in Corfu, Marrakesh, Miami, Gstaad and Connecticut, among other places. His great talent lies in his ability to mix styles, but what is most striking is
the quality of his work and its level of comfort, meaning that all his interiors are attractive and welcoming
from the moment we step into them.
Jaime Parladé’s favourite creations are those for country houses as well as the remodelling projects
he has undertaken of residences in Madrid, Ciudad Real and Toledo. Illustrated with images by well-known

Hernán Díaz. Un retrato de Colombia
Santiago Rueda
Editions in Spanish and English. 208 pages. 170 illustrations
27 x 23,5 cm. Clothbound covered by French fold jacket
Bogotá, Ediciones El Viso, 2014
The history of the second half of the twentieth century in Colombia was fixed through the lens of Hernán
Díaz. The son of amateur photographers, Díaz defined his aesthetic interest early in his life and, remaining
true to it, restored artistry to Colombian photography.
Through his first job on a commercial airline, Díaz came into contact with celebrities of the time and
thus obtained his first portraits of actresses like María Félix, María Antonieta Pons or Libertad Lamarque.
Later he began formal studies of photography in the United States, and it was during this period that he
met two of his major artistic influences: Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. Upon his return to Colombia,
Díaz befriended some of the most important figures in the Latin American art scene, Fernando Botero,
Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar and Gabriel García Márquez, who were immortalised by Díaz’s iconic images. It was also at this time that he met Rafael Moure, who became his life partner. He contributed to periodicals such as Cronos, Life, Life en Español and Revista Semana. He published a dozen books, and was
the subject of numerous international exhibitions.
Hernán Díaz lived his life through the
lens of his Leica, which he called “the tool
that explains the world”. The curiosity that
characterised him became visible in his
work as a writer, painter, environmental activist and filmmaker.
All the blackandwhite photographs that
illustrate this well researched book are a
tribute and testament to the work of the
“photographer of power”, forming a communion of his different interests: society,
landscapes and cities.

Meadows Museum in Dallas ( December 2013 ), was seen at the San Diego Museum of Art ( March 2014 ).
The catalogue explores the relationship between the artist and the United States in the second and third
decades of the twentieth century through the eyes of its leading political figures, its collectors and its artists

special emphasis on the painter’s relationship with the Hispanic Society of America and with key figures
such as Archer Milton Huntington and Thomas Fortune Ryan.
Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the artist’s great-granddaughter and the leading authority on his work, has been
responsible for the supervision of this publication and for certifying that every image is a rigorous reproduction of the original. An appendix includes a complete illustrated list of all the paintings that he produced

Joaquín Sorolla ( 1863–1923 ) is one of the great master painters and one of the most influential and
attractive artists of all time. From very early on in his career, Sorolla managed to prosper with unusual
success on the international scene, not only in Europe but also in the United Sates, where, in the early
years of the 20th century, his exhibitions attracted hitherto unseen numbers of visitors. Interest in his
work has never declined and this is reflected in the invariabily well attended exhibitions of his paintings,
as well as the success enjoyed by publications that are devoted to studying and reproducing works by
the great master. This is even the case when these publications very often lack the quality required of an
art monograph. Blanca Pons-Sorolla has selected the one hundred works that make up this volume, and
is also the author of the accompanying introductory text.

This catalogue accompanied the exhibition that was held at the Gallerie d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea
in Ferrara ( Italy ) and afterwards at the Fine Arts Museum in the Palace of Charles V at the Alhambra in
Granada and the Sorolla Museum in Madrid in 2012 and 2013. Split into five sections—Earth, Water,
Courtyard, Garden and The Garden of the Sorolla House—, this exhibition presents the works that Joaquín
Sorolla ( 1863–1923 ) created after 1906 as a result of the artist’s fascination with gardens, which he was
to paint directly in the open air at La Granja, the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada and his own house in Madrid. These are paintings in which we can observe the artist’s interest in
portraying the interplay of light and shade and different reflections in water by means of a sketch-like
technique based on the use of very loose brushstrokes and striking colours.

The Male Nude. Dimensions of Masculinity

Editions in Spanish and English. 288 pages. 183 colour and 33 blackandwhite

El Viso, 2014
ISBN English : 978-84-941856-3-2 [ 48€]
This book adopts six standpoints in order to analyse the different ways in which artists have represented
the male nude from the early modern period to the present day. 172 works of art created in various techniques and belonging to collections from all over the world engage in a dialogue that originates in eighteenth-century Europe, when the canon of classical antiquity was revived and an identity between moral
virtue and strength was held to define the heroic man.
The breaking of the conventions of academic representation, coupled with the decline of other values
in the visual arts, opened up the possibility to discover other facets of the male nude. From manly strength
to the most human pain, this book aims to show the reader both the expression of the past and its contemporary manifestations.

symbols of civilization and progress that infused the age.
This catalogue accompanies the exhibition of works by Velasco, Gualdi García Cubas, Almazán,
Montes de Oca, Coto and Cabrera, with essays on space, nature, human sciences, artistic composition
and landscaping, and insightful and thorough commentaries on twenty works.

Few people know that the earliest colour photography that was made widely available originated from a
series of simple potato starch grains, that the marketing of this technique dates from 1907, and that this
invention, which was named “ the autochrome plate,” was a product of the Lumière brothers. Three years
after the first centenary of this technique comes the publication of this pioneering book on the topic. Focusing on Spain, the book brings together a large number of autochrome plates produced by Spanish
professional and amateur photographers, as well as a selection of plates made by foreign photographers
who travelled to Spain at the behest of The Hispanic Society, National Geographic and the Albert Kahn
Foundation. The pictures are accompanied by three essays designed to introduce readers to the history
of the autochrome plate, the plates of The Hispanic Society and the practice of colour photography in
Spain.

In this biography Carlos Botero the artist’s son, reveals his father’s aesthetic, explaining his universality and
analysing a body of work that aims to create beauty and generate pleasure. His book describes the career of
a painter and sculptor who has created a distinctive style characterised by voluminous figures and voluptuous
forms. Botero’s importance arises from his creative energy, his mastery of different techniques, the variety of
his figures, the fact that his oeuvre is rooted in the great tradition of universal art, particularly the Italian Renaissance, and finally the way his work delights viewers and transcends boundaries.
The text focuses on the themes within Botero’s oeuvre, the different phases of his creative process,
his aesthetic beliefs and the variety of techniques that he deploys with such mastery ( sculpture, painting
and drawing ).

Nūr : Light in Art and Science from the Islamic World explores the use and significance of light in Islamic
art and science, revealing how light is a unifying motif in Islamic civilisations across the globe. Taking its
starting point from the Arabic word for light, both in its physical and metaphysical sense, Nūr is divided into
two principal sections. The first is devoted to art and includes manuscripts illuminated with gold and
coloured pigments, lustreware ceramics, metal objects with gold and silver inlay, and objects made in
precious and semi-precious stones. The second section focuses on the field of science, in particular
equatorial sundials, astrolabes and anatomical instruments, which illustrate the influence of the Islamic
world on scientific thought. At the same time, Nūr emphasises the way in which Spain has historically been
a cultural bridge between the Islamic world and Europe and a gateway for the arrival of Islamic discoveries
in fields such as medicine, geometry and astronomy. In addition, this book explores the idea of light as a
shared unifying metaphor in the Muslim, Christian and Judaic cultures.

The exhibition on the collection of royal bound volumes belonging to Spain’s National Heritage, Great
Bindings from the Spanish Royal Collections ( 15th–21st Centuries ), brings together for the very first time
the extraordinary treasure trove of bound volumes preserved at the Royal Palace Library and in the Libraries of the Monasteries of El Escorial, Las Huelgas, Las Descalzas and La Encarnación, works that make
up one of the world’s finest collections devoted to the art of binding. As truly exclusive creations, these
works can be enjoyed as much for their appeal to the touch as for the visual delights they offer. Nevertheless, their cultural significance goes beyond the realm of luxury. Their meaning resides in their ceremonial and representative function, in their endeavour to achieve the category required for an institutional work,
in their ability to endow cultural creation with a sense of excellence and long-lasting appeal, and in their
desire to pay homage to the monarch in whose hands they were destined to rest.

This book, which features some extraordinary illustrations and is fully documented by its authors thanks to their
research at the archive of the factory of Asnières, the traditional headquarters of Louis Vuitton, traces the development of the most characteristic product of this French design company : the unequalled trunks that brought
Louis Vuitton fame and prestige throughout the world. Furthermore, in full awareness of the fact that Louis
Vuitton’s creations are intimately linked to the customers themselves, this book not only focuses on the firm’s
most unforgettable creations but also offers a biography of the individuals who commissioned them. We thus
witness the beginnings of aeronautics, as well as taking part in the first intercontinental rallies. We will travel with
Savorgnan de Brazza through impenetrable African jungles, tour the four corners of the Earth alongside Albert
Kahn, accompany Ernest Hemingway and his typewriter and, more recently, discover the trunks commissioned

In 1854, the elite classes discovered the art of travelling in style ; Louis Vuitton had just invented the first
modern suitcase, the perfect combination of elegant refinement and practicality: a flat case in poplar covered
in waterproof canvas. The characters “ LV ” started to appear everywhere, from ocean liners to the Gobi desert.
For the good and the great of this world, Louis Vuitton had turned travel into a veritable art. Luxury no longer
found its definition in ostentation, but rather in the desire to project an orderly and harmonious image of
oneself to the world. In 1997, The House of Louis Vuitton, luggage maker, took another bold leap into the
unknown when Marc Jacobs was entrusted with the task of moving into the fashion market. Another unparalleled triumph followed—Louis Vuitton has since redefined the concept of modern luxury.

This exhaustive work fills the void that exists regarding the study and recording of important infrastructures
and constructions made of iron, creations that characterise a key period in the history of architecture and
engineering in Spain, effectively reflecting the country’s economic and social development.
To talk about architecture and engineering based on the use of iron and related materials is to talk
about the Industrial Revolution, about progress, about development in all fields, about the possibility of
exploring new techniques and materials and, as a consequence, about the construction of large-scale
infrastructures such as bridges, viaducts and train stations, not to mention markets, glass palaces, theatres
and bullrings.

hundred varieties of roses and more than four hundred species of trees, bushes and covering plants. After
thirty-five years of careful work, this garden represents a prime example of balance and respectful integration with the environment. The history of its creation and its meticulous and ongoing development, together with its achievements, successes and failures, is also the story, in good part, of its creator, in his
capacity as a nature-lover, gardening enthusiast, hunter and photographer.

No major exhibition of works by Eugène Delacroix has been shown in Spain since 1988. Meanwhile,
various new approaches to his paintings and abundant writings have revealed an increasingly fascinating
artistic personality : that of a creator of considerable intellectual ability and discernment who threw himself
into the elaboration of a new cultural and artistic canon, for which he served as a forerunner. He was also
an artist with an extraordinary sense of opportunity and keen commercial acumen, who raised his art to a
level at which it became representative of a new age. The book illustrates the diverse nature of Delacroix’s
artistic activities, including paintings, drawings, mural decorations and engravings, and focuses on the new
artistic approaches to Delacroix’s work within the field of chalcographic engraving and lithography, as well
as the presence of landscape in the master’s work, an aspect that has received relatively little attention
specialists until now.

The means by which the aesthetic tastes of bourgeois society were determined throughout the nineteenth
century led to the creation of a mainstream characteristic of the modern age, a dominant aesthetic current
that would be either countered or followed by the groundbreaking developments of the early avant-garde
movements. This process developed through a context in which an aesthetic option that tended towards
a search for order and pleasure emerged as a tool with which to verify the social order from a bourgeois
point of view. Pleasure and Order thus constituted the realms in which early experiences in modern tastes
were able to develop with some degree of security. The book El placer y el orden ( Pleasure and Order )
explores these realms in the development of art within late nineteenth century society, as well as their
wide-ranging boundaries, frontiers that certain artists would soon consider it necessary to cross.

Few painters have been as highly considered as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was both during his lifetime
and over the two centuries following his death. Due to the painter’s considerable renown, his work, which
has always been much soughtafter by collectors, has also been widely dispersed. In fact, rarely has a
painter’s work been so widely distributed, a process that did not conclude without certain casualties and
losses. Today, many of his paintings are preserved at museums throughout the world, whilst others, kept
in private collections, are less familiar to the public and barely accessible to scholars. These works have
enjoyed little critical acclaim within the realm of art literature, and in fact some have remained entirely
hidden until now, or at least the debate on their place in the history of art has dissipated into total silence.
In this respect, historians, art experts and anyone interested in the work of this master painter will be delighted at the publication of this book.

In 1927 the Count of Polentinos, following a visit to the palace of the Countess of Alcubierre, recorded the
existence of a series of albums containing drawings at the Alcubierre residence, including an album known
as the Alcubierre Album, which consisted of 24 prints and 108 drawings.
The fact that the Alcubierre Album is now preserved as part of the Juan Abelló Collection has enabled
Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez and Benito Navarrete to carry out an exhaustive analysis of all the drawings
that make up the album, the majority produced by Andalusian artists and artists based in Anadalusia, although the album also brings together a number of artists who were active in Madrid and the region of
Aragon, a few Italian artists and even one Portuguese artist.

The exhibition catalogue entitled Portraits of the Belle Époque takes us back to the golden age of European portraiture and helps to explain the changes that took place regarding both stylistic conventions and
the relationship between the artist and the public. The exhibition begins with a series of self-portraits of
the most important artists of the time, offering us a glimpse of the splendours of European life through the
mirror of society, as well as family and group portraits and various open-air scenes, all of which lead up
to the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The exhibition concludes with different works produced in the
year building up to the Great War, depictions that clearly reflect the general sense of disenchantment and
anguish and the overriding subjective freedom of the artist.

Edition in English. 104 pages, with 4 fold-outs. 66 colour illustrations
24 x 30 cm. Binding in printed silk
Madrid, Fundación Carlos de Amberes and Ediciones El Viso, 2011

During the last quarter of the fifteenth century, a series of tapestries were woven, probably in Tournai ( Belgium ), to commemorate Alfonso V of Portugal’s conquest of the fortified cities of North Africa. Since the
seventeenth century, these tapestries have been preserved at the Collegiate Church of Pastrana. Following
the important restoration process undertaken by the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, the tapestries were exhibited in Belgium, Spain and Portugal. They then travelled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington and
the Meadows Museum in Dallas. This catalogue has been published with large-format reproductions of the
tapestries in the form of fold-outs, as well as numerous close-up images of different details. The catalogue
also includes various essays that analyse the Portugal of Alfonso V and the weapons that were employed
during the period, as well as a report detailing the process that was carried out in order to restore these works.
