Special Events Reunion Package
Dear Reunion / Special Event Planner, We are the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce located in the beautiful and diverse Chama Valley in Northern New Mexico near the Colorado border. Chama is two hours north of Santa Fe on State Highway 84 and near the Colorado border. It is situated in the southern Rockies at 7,860 feet elevation and is what one might consider a “best kept secret.” We hope you and your membership will consider the potential of this area as you plan for your future reunions or special events. In our experience, veteran’s reunions are often held near military bases or in glitzy, entertainment centers like Las Vegas, Nevada, or Branson, Missouri. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your reunion somewhere quiet and peaceful? Our community holds our military and veterans in the highest regard. We understand the special requirements for venues such as outdoor BBQ’s, memorial services, banquets and side trips to provide time for old friends to reunite and new friends to bond. Where else could a group hold a special memorial service for their fallen at 10,015 feet elevation after having ridden up the mountain side on a coal fired steam train? For those that long for clean air, solitude from daily pressures, and the desire to see some of our Nation’s natural wonders with activities such as hiking, biking and fishing thrown in, the possibilities in Chama are unlimited. Whereas many cities and convention bureaus offer similar services at a cost, we are prepared to provide you liaison and planning assistance for free. Since we are a small, but proud community, we do not have the resources to expend large amounts of money to advertise our area, but we do have the enthusiasm to assist you in planning a memorable event. Included with this introduction letter is a CD containing a host of information about our community for you to consider during your reunion / special event planning process. Since Chama is a small community, groups of 150 or less are the most easily accommodated. Your reunion planner[s] would do the leg work, but we would provide information and contacts for the venues you desired plus help smooth the way for special requirements. Please take a look at what the Reunion & Special Event Package offers and consider letting us welcome you to our community for your next reunion or special event. If you are no longer your organization’s reunion / special event host / hostess, please and kindly pass this to the person[s] planning your next event. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact any one of us Respectfully yours, 2 REUNION / SPECIAL EVENT PLANNING PACKAGE Photo by Roger Hogan Chama, New Mexico * INDEX * SUBJECT Welcome To New Mexico From Governor Susana Martinez Historic Background of Chama Chama Today Special Activities Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Chama in Miniature Train Diorama in Cumbres Mall Angel Fire Vietnam Veterans Memorial Other Local Activities Available Elk Hunting & Fishing Fishing [Professional Guide] Ghost Ranch & Museum Hiking, Mountain Biking, ATV Recreation, Boating & Camping Horseback Riding Jicarilla Apache Nation Geocaching Kayak Rental Pagosa Springs, CO Pontoon Boat Rental Weaving Schedule of 2012 Events in Chama Area Public Services Accommodations Bed & Breakfasts Cabins & Lodges Guest Houses Hotels & Motels RV Parks & Camping Vacation Rentals Questions to Ask Proprietors Auto / Cycle / RV Repairs & Service Banks Barber & Beauty Salons Chama Churches Dental Emergency Police & Fire Game & Fish Internet Service Laundromat Library i PAGE 1 2 2 3 3 4 5 5 5 6 6 6 8 8 8 8 9 9 9 9 11 11 11 11 13 13 14 15 16 16 17 17 17 18 18 18 19 19 19 * INDEX * SUBJECT PAGE Locksmith Medical Pharmacy Post Office Supermarket Tourism & Travel Information Restaurants Quick Fare Full Menu Service Banquet Facilities Retail Art Galleries / Studios Shops Telephone Service Transportation Weather 19 19 20 20 20 20 22 22 22 23 25 25 26 29 29 30 ii 1 * HISTORIC BACKGROUND OF CHAMA * Chama, at 7,860' elevation, two hours north of Santa Fe, is hidden away in the southern Rocky Mountains on the border of New Mexico and Colorado, and a precious, historic artifact of the American West that time has forgotten. The town was built in 1880 with the coming of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway [D&RG] and little has changed since. In 1968, the D&RG, since renamed the Denver, Rio Grande & Western [D&RGW], shut down due to the lack of business. In 1970, the States of Colorado and New Mexico purchased the 64 miles of narrow gauge track between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado, which was renamed the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad [C&TS]. This railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the twentieth century. Chama became a crew change point and the railroad had a significant presence with its’ shops, round house and other support facilities. Many of the families residing in Chama today were involved in the construction of the railroad and its’ subsequent operation over its’ 88 years of operation. The line through Chama was known as the San Juan Extension and was primarily involved in the movement of precious metals such as gold and silver ore, cattle and sheep for grazing in thre high country during the summer months and timber extraction. Later, in the 1920's oil was discovered west of Chama and offered a reprieve to the railroad. Now the primary payload is tourism. The steam locomotives built by Baldwin in 1925 still labor up steep grades carrying visitors over high trestles, through tunnels, and along narrow shelves above yawning gorges. In an era of strip malls, cruise ships and jumbo jets, the C&TS provides an experience for those seeking something different. It provides adventures that unfold in the easy cadence of Mountain Time and the little railroad town of Chama still offers support and safe haven to weary railroad crews and travelers. * CHAMA TODAY * Historic old west cultures meet in Chama. Cowboy, Indian and Spanish traditions exist in this 1880's town. Miles of unspoiled wilderness, scenic National Forests, state parks and off-road adventures await. The Chama, Brazos, Conejos and Los Pinos Rivers are known for their superb trout fishing opportunities. Hiking, horseback riding, boating, hunting, wildlife viewing, crosscountry skiing and ski mobiling, and photography venues abound as well. Sight seeing may also be experienced from one’s automobile, motorcycle, or better yet, from the C&TS as it winds through Toltec Gorge and over Cumbres Pass [10,015 feet elevation]. All of this in clean air and beautiful surrounds. Please see the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce web site at www.chamavalley.com for information not provided herein. Mapping may be accomplished using Google or MapQuest web site services, not to mention Rand-McNally or AAA printed maps. Chama resides just north of the intersection of state highways 17, 64 and 84. 2 * SPECIAL ACTIVITIES * Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad [575] 756-2152 [888] 286-2737 www.cumbrestoltec.com Spend the day on a coal-fired, narrow gauge, steam train that has operated since 1880. Traverse over Cumbres Pass [10,015 feet elevation] and through scenic Toltec Gorge between Chama, NM, and Antonito, CO. Lunch is included at the mid-day stop in Osier, CO. Special group rates and amenities are available. This might be scheduled to include a memorial service and/or group BBQ at Cumbres Pass. NOTE: The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, during its’ operating season Memorial Day weekend through the middle of October, offers special moonlight trips, wine tasting trips and special photo freights for the railfan. Check their web site for details on these special events. Photo by Brooks Wilson For the children and grand children: On Thursdays through most of the summer months, the C&TS runs a special “Cinder The Bear Train” to Cumbres Pass from Chama for hot dogs and story telling with the railroad’s mascot, Cinder The Bear, before returning to Chama. This is a short trip [approximately three hours] for short attention spans, yet makes for a great day with the young members of the family. Please check the railroad’s web site above for trips, schedules and fares. 3 Volunteering: A special group of volunteers known as The Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad spend time each summer working on projects. While the owners of the railroad, the States of Colorado and New Mexico, are responsible for professional maintenance, repair and upkeep of the engines and track, the Friends provide a labor of love restoring the many historic rail cars and buildings on the line. If you have always had the dream to learn first hand about all the facets of railroading and be a bit of a kid again, please consider joining the Friends. There are no skills required other than a love of trains and willingness to learn. It is a great bunch of folks from all over the world who help to keep the history of the C&TS alive for future generations. Please see the Friends’ web site www.cumbrestoltec.org for more information. Chama in Miniature Train Diorama in Cumbres Mall Towards the back of the Cumbres Mall, 493 Terrace, directly across the street from the Chama rail yard, is an operational On3 scale diorama of the Chama yard during the 1950's made by a rail fan and donated for display under the auspices of The Narrow Gauge Preservation Foundation. There are also TV screens with actual C&TS train operation being shown. Check it out! Hours of operation vary. The Continental Divide Trail (CDT), is just 12 miles north of Chama crossing Highway 17 in the Cumbres Pass area. South, the CDT heads into the Carson National Forest. North, it heads into the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forest, and into the San Juan Wilderness. Follow Hwy 17 a few more miles north and you have forest roads, which lead you to various trail heads. Some trails from Red Lake and Duck Lake lead you into the San Juan wilderness area where you can visit high altitude (11,000 ft) alpine lakes. The Cruces Basin Wilderness area can be accessed via a forest road for beautiful quiet exploring. 6 Mountain Biking There are roads all through the national forests surrounding the Chama Valley. These roads provide access to small trails for terrific single track bike riding. Be mindful, however, that bicycles are not allowed in areas deemed wilderness such as the San Juan wilderness and Cruces Basin. On the trail to paradise Photo by Jolene Jessie ATV Riding Once again, the roads in the national forests surrounding the Chama Valley provide access to some great ATV riding. North of Chama on Highway 17, there are forest roads taking you to Trujillo Meadows and Spruce Hole at Cumbres Pass and La Manga Pass respectively. There is also Forest Road 87 just north of Cumbres Pass which provides access to Apache Canyon, Arkansas Creek and to Highway 64 which is the road between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras. *NOTE: Please be aware that licenses, permits and fees may be required to operate an ATV in some of the above areas, depending, too, upon the state in which you will be riding.
