PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP
Dec. 5, 2014 - Santa Clara, Calif. (Levi’s Stadium)

OREGON51
Facing No. 7 Arizona on a rain-soaked field, No. 2 Oregon dominated all phases of the game to earn a 51-13 win and claim the 2014 Pac-12 Football
Championship. With the victory, the Ducks earned a bid to the inaugural four-team College Football Playoff.
Even though Arizona won the previous two meetings between these teams, Oregon flipped the script in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
“That’s the neatest part about this group, is that they never stop believing in this process,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said following the win. “Arizona
got the better of us this season and we never looked back from it. It’s a different team this time of year. We have elevated a bunch of different ways. There
are a bunch of big smiles and I’m proud of that.”
Marcus Mariota went out in style. The Oregon quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner went 25-of-38 for 313 yards and two touchdowns through the
air while adding 33 yards and three more scores on the ground.
The Wildcats entered the contest averaging nearly 37 points, but couldn’t get any momentum going against the Ducks. The Ducks’ defense dominated
and by halftime, held a commanding 23-0 lead after allowing Arizona just 25 yards of offense on 25 plays. Arizona achieved a pair of first downs on its
initial drive of the game, but proceeded to go three-and-out on its next six possessions to close out the first half. By intermission, the Wildcats had 39
penalty yards, 34 passing yards and minus-9 rushing.
Meanwhile, the Ducks were able to build a big lead despite some struggles of their own in the first half. Early drives stalled in the red zone and kicker
Aidan Schneider went 3-of-4, including a 31-yarder as the clock expired. Freshman Royce Freeman carried the ball 15 times for 90 yards as Oregon
dominated time of possession, 20:29 to Arizona’s 9:31. Both of Oregon’s first-half touchdowns came via Mariota, who kept the ball on a 7-yard score
midway though the second period before scampering for another 4-yard touchdown a few minutes later.
Mariota got to work in the third quarter, throwing a pair of touchdown passes while adding his third rushing score of the night from one yard out.
Mariota became the first player in the Football Bowl Subdivision to score at least four touchdowns in 10 different contests this year. He also became the
first player in college football history with a touchdown pass in 39 straight games to begin his career, while his third-quarter touchdown connection to
Devon Allen marked the 100th of his career.

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The Pac-12 Football Championship Game returns to Levi’s® Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The teams with the best record in their respective divisions will meet in the
Pac-12 title game on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015 (ESPN).
THE RETURNEES: A total of 178 starters, who started at least half of his team’s games or a majority
of game at a specific position, return to Pac-12 football squads in 2015. That’s out of a possible 288
(including kickers and punters) for an average of 14.8 starters returning per team. UCLA returns the
most with 19 starters, followed by Arizona State with 17 returning starters. Stanford returns the fewest
starters with 11. Here are the numbers:

THE HEADLINERS: Among those 178 returning starters are a number of headliners, including a total
of eight first-team and 14 second-team All-Pac-12 performers. Explosive offenses dominated league
play with eight teams piling up 430 yards or more in total offense, while nine teams averaged 30 or
more points per game.
RETURNING SIGNAL-CALLERS: Despite losing the services of Arizona State’s Taylor Kelly (ASU career record with 10,223 yards of total offense), Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (Heisman Trophy winner and
Pac-12 career record-holder with 13,023 yards in total offense), Oregon State’s Sean Mannion (Pac-12
career record-holder 13,600 passing yards), UCLA’s Brett Hundley (UCLA’s all-time leader in total offense - 11,713 yds) and Washington State’s Connor Halliday (WSU’s all-time leader with 11,304 passing yards and 90 TD passes), the Pac-12 is in good hands with seven returning signal callers, while two
others picked up three starts each last season for injured starters. Here’s what’s back behind center:

HAVE BALL, WILL RUN: Eight of the Pac-12’s top 10 rushers return in 2015, led by a pair of 1,500yard rushers in UCLA’s Paul Perkins (1,575 yds) and UTAH’s Devontae Booker (1,512 yds). While
most teams went to the air last season, there were seven teams that balanced their offense by rushing
for 160 or more yards per game. Due to the success of OREGON’s Royce Freeman, the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Oregon topped the league with 234.5 yards per game on the ground. Freeman gained 1,365 yards and added 18 TDs. ARIZONA’s Nick Wilson set an UA freshman record with
1,375 yards. CALIFORNIA’s Daniel Lasco became the first Golden Bear to rush for 1,000 yards since
2011 when he tallied 1,115 yards and 12 TDs. ARIZONA STATE’s D.J. Foster rushed for 1,081 yards
and 9 TDs, and added another 688 receiving yards. He was the only FBS running back last season to
rush for 1,000 yards and collect 600 receiving yards.

2015 PAC-12 NOTEBOOK
HERE’S THE CATCH: The NFL Draft gave proof that the Pac-12 featured some of the nation’s top receivers last season with USC’s Nelson
Agholor, Washington State’s Vince Mayle, Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong,
and Stanford’s Ty Montgomery all having been selected in the first four
rounds. But the league is not void of another talented group of pass
catchers. Three returning receivers topped 1,000 yards last season COLORADO’s Nelson Spruce caught a school-record 106 passes for
1,198 yards and 12 TDs, ARIZONA’s Cayleb Jones hauled in 73 passes
for 1,019 yards and 9 TDs, while OREGON’s Byron Marshall had 74
receptions for 1,003 yards and 6 TDs. Three additional receivers with
standout numbers will need to show patience with new starting quarterbacks in 2015 - OREGON STATE’s Victor Bolden (72 rec/798 yds/2
TDs), WASHINGTON STATE’s River Cracraft (66 rec/771 yds/8 TDs)
and UCLA’s Jordan Payton (67 rec/954 yds/7 TDs).
IT STARTS UP FRONT: The Pac-12 returns an average of 3.5 offensive
lineman per team, with no team returning less than two starters. USC,
OREGON STATE and WASHINGTON STATE each returns all five starters
from a year ago. USC C Max Tuerk, a three-year starter and 2014 AllPac-12 performer, anchors the Trojan line with help from OG-OT Toa
Lobendahn, who earned Freshman All-America honors. WASHINGTON
STATE LT Joe Dahl will protect the backside of the Cougar quarterback
in WSU’s highly-potent passing game. In fact, the Cougars return all
18 scholarship linemen. Returning second team All-Pac-12 performers include UCLA C Jake Brendel, ARIZONA STATE C Nick Kelly and
STANFORD LT Kyle Murphy.
DEFENSES EXPECT TO SHOWCASE NEW TALENT: Of the 39 Pac-12
players selected in the NFL Draft, 24 came from the defensive side of
the ball. And with an average of 6.1 defensive starters per team returning, that’ll give 60 players an opportunity to fill a starting role and
make an impact in 2015. The league’s top seven tacklers return, led by
ARIZONA All-America LB Scooby Wright III. Wright III led the Pac-12
with 163 tackles (11.6 avg) and 29.0 tackles for loss (2.07 avg). Three
other returnees recorded 100 or more tackles - UTAH LB Jared Norris
(116 tackles/8.9 avg), STANFORD LB Blake Martinez (102 tackles/7.8
avg) and ARIZONA STATE’s Jordan Simone (100 tackles/8.3 avg). With
seven returner starters who were key in Utah’s nation-leading 55 sacks
(4.23 avg), the Utes will continue to earn the moniker “Sack Lake City”
behind the aggressive play of DE Hunter Dimick (10.0 sacks) and his
teammates. Half of UCLA’s returning starters earned first or second
team All-Pac-12 honors last season - DB Ishmael Adams (41 tackles/2
interceptions), LB Myles Jack (87 tackles/6.7 avg), DL Kenny Clark (58
tackles/5.5 tackles for loss), DB Fabian Moreau (53 tackles/4.1 avg).
All-Pac-12 DB Su’a Cravens led USC with 17.0 tackles for loss.
GET YOUR KICKS: UTAH P Tom Hackett, a Ray Guy Award winner and
consensus All-America selection, led the nation in punt average (47.6).
ARIZONA P Drew Riggleman was second in the league (46.1). Four
returning place kickers each connected on at least 20 field goals last
season - ARIZONA STATE’s Zane Gonzales (22-of-27, 81.5%), UTAH’s
Andy Phillips (23-of-28, 82.1%), WASHINGTON’s Cameron Van Winkle
(20-of-24, 83.3%) and ARIZONA’s Casey Skowron (20-of-28, 71.4%).
Special teams play in the area of kick return will get a boost with the
return of CALIFORNIA’s Trevor Davis (32.6 kr avg, 2 TDs), USC’s Adoreé
Jackson (29.7 kr avg/2 TDs), WASHINGTON’s Dante Pettis (10.3 pr
avg/1 TD) .
THE NEW GUY: OREGON STATE welcomes head coach Gary Andersen to lead the Beavers’ football program. That’s nine head coaching
changes in the Pac-12 over the last three years. The current group of
Pac-12 head coaches have combined to post an impressive FBS record
of 688-389 (.639).

A QUICK LOOK AT THE WILDCATS
OFFENSE: Big play-makers return for the Wildcat offense that averaged 34.5 points per game. Sophomore QB Anu Solomon threw for an
FBS single-season freshman record 3,793 yards and a school-record
tying 28 TDs. His primary target returns in senior WR Cayleb Jones,
who hauled in 73 receptions for 1,019 yards (14.0 ypc) and nine TDs.
In addition, junior SL Samajie Grant (45 rec/718 yards/16.0 ypc) provides Solomon with another skilled target. If the Cats weren’t moving
the ball through the air, they put it into the hands of sophomore RB
Nick Wilson as he rushed for 1,375 yards (105.8 ypg) and 16 TDs.
The offensive line played a huge part in the success of the offense as
the front five combined for 174 career starts, but Arizona will need
to fill the three holes in the offensive line for 2015. Joining senior LG
Cayman Bundage on the left side at LT will be junior transfer Freddie
Tagaloa. Senior PK Casey Skowron set a school single-season scoring
record for kickers with 123 points (8.8 ppg), which was third most alltime by all UA players.
DEFENSE: Junior All-American linebacker Scooby Wright III (163
tackles/29.0 tackles for loss/14.0 sacks) leads the Wildcat defense.
Wright had one of the most distinguished seasons by a UA linebacker, collecting Bronko Nagurski, Rotary Lombardi and Chuck Bednarik
awards. Helping to solidify the front seven will be senior SPUR Will
Parks (81 tackles/13.0 tackles for loss). The Wildcats will need to
shore up a secondary that loses three seniors off last year’s squad.
Sophomore CB Jarvis McCall Jr. is the most experienced returner as
he started all 12 games last season, collecting 49 tackles and seven
PBU. The defense will need to rely on senior P Drew Riggleman to
once again pin the opposition deep in their own territory. Riggleman
was second in the Pac-12 with a 46.1 average, and the team’s net
punting average of 39.8 also was second in the league.

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE SUN DEVILS
OFFENSE: Graduate QB Mike Bercovici sits atop the spring depth
chart and for good reason. He started three games last season in place
of injured QB Taylor Kelly and responded by completing 92-of-146
(.630) for 1,243 yards and 9 TDs, with victories over ranked foes USC
and Stanford. Three veteran offensive linemen return to pave the way
for the Sun Devil rushing attack - LG Christian Westerman, C Nick
Kelly and RG Vi Teofilo. That senior trio combined for 28 of a possible
29 starts last season. The Sun Devils are deep at running back, which
allows for senior D.J. Foster to move to slot in order to take advantage
of his receiving skills. Foster, who rushed for 1,081 yards (83.2 ypg)
with 9 TDs last season, is the team’s top returning receiver after catching 62 passes for 688 yards (11.1 ypc). Reliable junior PK Zane Gonzalez ranked 12th nationally with 9.8 points per game. In two seasons,
he’s connected on 47 of his 57 field goal attempts (82.5 percent).
DEFENSE: The Sun Devils return one of the most experienced defenses in the Pac-12. The strength of the ASU defense looks to be a
deep linebacker corps, led by juniors Salamo Fiso, Laiu Moeakiola
and Antonio Longino. The trio combined for 249 tackles, 27.0 tackles
for loss, and 10.5 sacks. Sophomore LB DJ Calhoun, a Freshman
All-American by the Football Writers Association, tallied 35 tackles/7.0
tackles for loss/2.0 sacks and will contend for a starting position. While
ASU loses Damarious Randall, an NFL first round draft pick, the secondary will be led by the team’s leading tackler in senior FS Jordan
Simone (100 tackles/8.3 per game).

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE GOLDEN BEARS
OFFENSE: The Bears return eight starters on offense, an explosive
unit that posted 12 single-season records, including 38.2 points per
gmae and 495.2 yards of total offense per game. Junior QB Jared Goff
broke 15 school records himself, including 3,973 passing yards and
35 passing TDs. Goff will have plenty of targets to throw to as seven
of the team’s top eight receivers return in 2015. Junior WR Kenny
Lawler hauled in 54 receptions for 701 yards and 9 TDs, while senior
WR Bryce Treggs collected 52 receptions for 583 yards and 6 TDs.
As much as the Bears like to sling the ball, Cal boasts a solid ground
attack behind senior RB Daniel Lasco. Lasco is one of six returning
Pac-12 rushers to run for 1,000 yards last season as he piled up 1,115
yards and 12 rushing TDs. The offenisve line will be anchored by senior Jordan Rigsbee who has started all 36 games during his career.
DEFENSE: The Bears allowed 144.6 yards per game on the ground
last season, which was much improved over the 188.6 yards allowed
in 2013. With a significant number of defensive players returning, Cal
looks to make another dramatic improvement in stopping the run with
the push up front coming from senior DT Mustafa Jalil and sophomore transfer DT James Looney. Junior LB Michael Barton and his
team-leading 80 tackles leads a deep and experienced set of linebackers. Junior LB Hardy Nickerson added 69 tackles, while senior
LB Jalen Jefferson chipped in with 58 takedowns last season. While
the secondary returns three starters, led by senior S Stefan McClure
(50 tackles), the Bears will look to add depth to a defensive backfield
that struggled last season (367.2 passing yards, 42 TDs). Sophomore
Luke Rubenzer moved from quarterback to safety during spring practices and looks to crack into the starting lineup when fall camp begins.

COLORADO BUFFALOES
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BUFFALOES
OFFENSE: Junior QB Sefo Liufau led the Colorado offense to 28.5
points per game last season, as well as 439.2 yards per game. Those
figures are the most since the 2001 team averaged 33.0 ppg and the
1996 squad averaged 452.1 yards per game. Liufau set numerous
school single-season records as he took to the air 498 times, completing 325 passes for 3,200 yards and 28 TDs. His primary target
returns in senior WR Nelson Spruce. Spruce hauled in a single-season
school-record 106 receptions (tied for fourth most in Pac-12 history)
for 1,198 yards and 12 TDs. Sophomore WR Shay Fields gives the CU
passing game another option as he pulled in 50 passes fro 498 yards.
Behind LT Jeromy Irwin and RT Stephane Nembot, the offensive line
provided great protection for Liufau as the Buffs allowed a league-low
23 sacks last season.
DEFENSE: Nine starters return, with better than 57 percent of the
snaps played by sophomores and freshmen. However, the Buffs will
need those returners to step up with a determined effort to stop the
run in 2015. CU ranked last in the league, allowing 204.8 rushing
yards. Leading the way will be junior LB Kenneth Olugbode (70 tackles/5.8 per game/2 fumbles recovered) and junior LB Addison Gillam
(64 tackles/5.4 per game). Colorado batted down 60 passes last season, the most since 2007 (63). The veteran secondary returns three
of four starters, led by juinor SS Tedric Thompson (56 tackles/6.2 per
game/3 interceptions), junior DB Chidobe Awuzie (62 tackles/6.9 per
game) and senior CB Ken Crawley (team-best 11 PBU). The Buffs will
need to replace reliable special teamers PK Will Oliver and P Darragh
O’Neill who exhausted their eligibility. Oliver finished his CU career
tops on the school career charts for extra points made (129) and attempted (131), including a record string of 102 in a row to close out
his career. O’Neill averaged 44.1 yards per punt, while 40 percent of
his kicks landed inside-the-20.

OREGON DUCKS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE DUCKS
OFFENSE: Time for the Ducks to close the Marcus Mariota chapter and
focus on what’s next. Gone is the record-setting Heisman Trophy winner, but the Ducks will continue to be a solid offensive unit with quality
depth at the skill positions. Sophomore RB Royce Freeman rushed for
1,365 yards - the second-most by a freshman in Pac-12 history - and
was instrumental in the Ducks posting a league-leading 234.5 rushing
yards per game. The receiving corps is talented with junior WR Byron
Marshall (74 rec/1,003 yards/6 TDs), junior WR Dwayne Stanford (43
rec/639 yards/6 TDs), and sophomore WR Devon Allen (41 rec/684
yards/7 TDs). Junior WR Bralon Addison is expected to recover from
an injury that had him miss all of the 2014 season. He posted 61
receptions for 890 yards (14.6 ypc) and 7 TDs in 2013. Also looking
to make a full recovery from an injury sustained at Utah last season is
senior TE Pharaoh Brown (25 rec/420 yards/16.8 ypc/6 TDs). Junior
Jeff Lockie is the only experienced signal-caller on the roster and will
get pushed by the newcomers, but he’s already proven himself having
completed 21-of-28 for 207 yards and one TD last season.
DEFENSE: Oregon will count on an experienced front seven to apply
pressure as the Ducks break in a relatively inexperienced secondary.
Senior DE DeForest Buckner (80 tackles/12.5 tackles for loss/4.0
sacks), senior LB Rodney Hardrick (75 tackles/6.0 tackles for loss),
and senior LB Joe Walker (81 tackles/8.0 tackles for loss) are the key
veterans that were a part of a defensive unit that allowed 23.6 points
per game, which was second fewest among all Pac-12 teams. Junior S
Reggie Daniels (83 tackles/9 PBU) is the lone returning starter in the
Oregon secondary that collected 13 interceptions last season.

OREGON STATE BEAVERS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BEAVERS
OFFENSE: The Beavers welcome Gary Andersen to Corvallis as the
school’s 28th head coach. Despite losing the services of record-setting
quarterback Sean Mannion, Andersen will have plenty to work with on
the offensive side of the ball. Senior RB Storm Woods will look to carry
the load in the rushing game after running for 766 yards (6.3 avg) and
5 TDs last season, while the passing game will benefit from the return
of junior FL Victor Bolden and sophomore SE Jordan Villamin. Bolden
pulled down 70 receptions for 798 yards (11.1 avg) and a pair of TDs,
while Villamin hauled in 35 passes for 578 yards (16.5 avg) and 6 TDs.
Woods is another capable recevier as he had 26 receptions for 179
yards. The competition to replace Mannion under center includes redshirt freshman Nick Mitchell and freshman Seth Collins. Regardless
of who is tabbed the starter on September 4, he’ll be protected by an
the offensive line that returns all five startiners, including three veterans in junior LT Sean Harlow, senior RG Gavin Andrews, and senior C
Josh Mitchell (the older brother of Nick).
DEFENSE: This is where Andersen will have his work cut out for him
as the Beavers return just two starters from a year ago, the fewest
among all Pac-12 defenses. Led by four future NFL Draft picks, the
Beavers ranked fourth in the league in total defense (406.2 ypg), and
were led by a secondary that limited opponents to 248.1 yards through
the air and just 20 passing TDs - only Stanford’s secondary gave up
fewer TD passes in the Pac-12 with 12. The Beavers will switch from
a 4-3 to a 3-4 this season. Senior CB Larry Scott is the lone returning
starter in the secondary and had 43 tackles with a team-leading 11
PBU last season. Sophomore S Justin Strong did manage a few spot
starts at nickel back, and was effective with 56 tackles.

STANFORD CARDINAL
A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINAL
OFFENSE: While the Cardinal had two offensive players taken in the
NFL draft, the Stanford offense remains in good hands with senior
QB Kevin Hogan leading the way. He is 24-8 as a starter, including
a record of 11-6 vs. AP Top 25. In three seasons, Hogan has thrown
for 6,518 yards and 48 TDs, while rushing for 913 yards and 9 TDs.
The Cardinal will look to get the ball into the hands of RB Christian
McCaffrey. The multi-talented speedster totaled 796 all-purpose yards
in just 85 touches (9.4 yards per touch) last season. Balancing out the
Stanford ground game will be senior RB Barry Sanders (315 yards
rushing/5.3 avg). Hogan should continue to have plenty of time behind
an offensive front that returns four starters. Stanford led the league
allowing just 1.77 sacks per game. With the extra time, he’ll locate his
primary targets in senior WR Devon Cajuste (34 rec/557 yards/6 TD)
and junior TE Austin Hooper (40 rec/499 yards/2 TDs). The Cardinal
has posted a record of 42-11 (.792) over the past four seasons under
coach David Shaw.
DEFENSE: The Cardinal defense has led the Pac-12 in rushing defense in each of the last four seasons, and in scoring defense each of
the last three seasons. With success like that, it’s no wonder that four
Cardinal were taken in the NFL Draft. To continue that streak, Stanford
will look to rely on the leadership of just three returning senior starters
- LB Blake Martinez (team-leading 102 tackles/7.0 tackles for loss/4.5
sacks), LB Kevin Anderson (52 tackles/11.5 tackles for loss/5.5 sacks)
and FS Zach Hoffpauir (44 tackles/4.0 tackles for loss). The Cardinal
will need to reload in the trenches and will turn to a pair of sophomore
DEs Harrison Phillips and Solomon Thomas. Special teams will need
to reload as well as PK Jordan Williamson (Stanford’s career leader
with 374 points) and P Ben Rhyne have exhausted their eligibility.

UCLA BRUINS
2015 TEAM INFORMATION
Returning Starters: 19/Starters Lost: 5
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BRUINS
OFFENSE: The Bruins have produced at least nine wins in a season
in each of hte last three campaigns, a first in program history. While
they do have nine returning starters on offense that led the league
in red zone efficiency (94.1 percent), they’ll need to replace do-it-all
quarterback Brett Hundley. Hundley’s succcessor will have the benefit
of a veteran offensive line that returns four starters led by senior OLJake Brendel and junior OL Caleb Benenoch. Junior TB Paul Perkins
rushed for a league-leading 1,575 yards (121.2 per game), the second
most rushing yards in a single-season by a Bruin. Seven Bruins caught
at least 20 passes last season, and five of them return in 2015. Senior
REC Jordan Payton caught 67 passes for 954 yards (14.2 avg) and 7
TDs, junior REC Thomas Duarte added 28 rec/540 yards/19.3 avg/4
TDs. Senior PK Ka’imi Fairbairn connected on 18 of his 22 field goal
attempts last season and is currently riding a streak of hitting on 29
straight attempts from 35 yards and in. Last year, Fairbairn became
the first Bruin in school annals to record at least 100 points in three
straight seasons.
DEFENSE: Junior LB Myles Jack is the team’s returning leader with
88 tackles/6.7 avg, and along with Junior LB Deon Hollins (31 tackles/team-leading 9.0 sacks) will anchor UCLA’s veteran defense that
returns eight starters. Missed will be All-American and NFL Draft pick
LB Eric Kendricks who set the UCLA career record with 481 tackles.
The defensive front will be led by junior DL Eddie Vanderdoes (50
tackles/5.5 tackles for loss) and junior DL Kenny Clark (58 tackles/5.5
tackles for loss). Senior DB Fabian Moreau (53 tackles/8 PBU) keys
the Bruin secondary that returns four starters. The UCLA secondary
allowed 250.6 passing yards, which ranked third in the Pac-12, and
picked off 11 passes. Junior DB Ishmael Adams was responsible for
two interceptions, returning both for touchdowns, including one 95
yards. A dual-threat, Adams also returns punts and kickoffs, returning
one 100 yards for another score.

USC TROJANS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE TROJANS
OFFENSE: Sunior QB Cody Kessler posted impressive numbers last
season completing 69.7 percent of his pass attempts for 3,826 yards
and 39 TDs, with just five interceptions. His completion percentage
and 167.1 passing rating were USC single-season records. His 294.3
passing yards per game ranked fourth in the league and his 39 TDs
were second to Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. He loses his primary receiver in Nelson Agholor (104 rec/1,313 yds), but has sophomore WR
JuJu Smith (54 rec/724 yds). There’s competition at running back
to replace Javorius Allen who rushed for 1,489 yards/11 TDs, and
it could come down to a tag-team effort between junior Justin Davis
(595 yds/4 TDs) and senior Tre Madden (injured for all of 2014, but
rushed for 703 yrds in 2013). Whoever secures the starting spot in the
USC backfield will have the comfort of running behind an offensive
line that returns intact that features senior C Max Tuerk, a three-year
starter and 2014 All-Pac-12 performer, as well as sophomore OG-OT
Toa Lobendahn who earned Freshman All-America honors.
DEFENSE: The Trojan secondary could be the focal point of the USC
defense led by junior OL-S Su’a Cravens (68 tackles, team-leading
17.0 tackles for loss and 3 interceptions) and sophomore CB Adoreé
Jackson (49 tackles). Jackson, the Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, provides USC with a three-way player as he hauled in
10 receptions for 138 yards and 3 TDs, and added two kickoff returns
for scores. Despite the hole left by DE Leonard Williams, a two-time
All-American and NFL First Round Draft pick, the front line will be senior-laden with S NT Antwaun Woods (37 tackles) and DT-DE Delvon
Simmons (44 tackles). Senior LB Anthony Sarao, the team’s top returning tackler with 74 takedowns, anchors the middle of the defense
and welcomes the return of senior Lamar Dawson, a three-year starter
who missed last season with an injury.

UTAH UTES
A QUICK LOOK AT THE UTES
OFFENSE: Senior RB Devontae Booker is ready to carry the load
again for the Utes’ running game as he piled up 1,512 yards on 292
carries (5.2 avg) and 10 TDs. He averaged 133.3 yards in the final 10
games. Four returning starters on the offensive line will continue to
pave the way for Booker. Anchoring the Ute offensive line will be senior
C Siaosi Aiono. Aiono started 12 games last season and gave up just
one sack in 747 plays. Senior QB Travis Wilson returns as the team’s
signal caller. While he completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,170
yards and 18 TDs, the receiving corp took a hit with season-ending
injuries to key players. Senior WR Kenneth Scott (48 rec/506 yards/4
TDs) looks to be the primary target in the Utah passing game in 2015.
Junior PK Andy Phillips, a First Team All-Pac-12 selection, has been
near automatic for the Utes over two seasons as he’s hit 40 of 48 field
goal attempts (.833).
DEFENSE: Affectionately known as Sack Lake City, the Utes led the
nation with 55 sacks (4.23 avg), were second in the league in total
defense (393.5 yards per game), and were one of four Pac-12 teams
to allow less than 25 points per game. Despite losing a pair of NFL
Second Round draft picks in DE Nate Orchard and CB Eric Rowe, the
defense will continue to pressure the opposing quarterback. Senior
LB Jared Norris led the way with 116 tackles (8.9 per game), which
are second-most among all returning Pac-12 players. In just eight
games, senior LB Gionni Paul tallied 61 tackles and a team-leading
four interceptions. The defensive front will be led by junior DE Hunter
Dimick (52 tackles/14.5 tackles for loss/10.0 sacks) and sophomore
NT Lowell Lotulelei (33 tackles/4.5 tackles for loss/4.0 sacks). Senior
All-America P Tom Hackett prides himself in pinning the opposition
deep in its own territory. He’s placed 43.1 percent of his punts inside
the 20 (78-of-181), including 37 inside the 10-yard line and 16 inside
the 5-yard line, with just 17 touchbacks.

WASHINGTON HUSKIES
A QUICK LOOK AT THE HUSKIES
OFFENSE: Junior QB Jeff Lindquist appeared to come out of spring
workouts with the edge of securing a starting spot in the season opener, but will contend with returning starter Cyler Miles (307 rushing
yds/2,397 passing yards/17 TDs) who missed all of the spring workouts. Either quarterback will have the benefit of the top two targets
returning with senior WR Jaydon Mickens (60 rec/617 yds/4 TDs) and
senior TE Joshua Perkins (25 rec/315 yds/3 TDs). The Washington
running game will have three players competing for carries - junior
Dwayne Washington (697 yds/5.3 avg/9 TDs), sophomore Lavon Coleman (565 yds/4.1 avg) and senior Deontae Cooper (285 yds/4.5 avg).
Whoever carries the ball, they’ll do so behind a Husky offensive line
that needs to rebuild as just two starters return, who combined for 16
starts - senior G Dexter Charles and sophomore RT Coleman Shelton.
Junior PK Cameron Van Winkle hit 20 of 24 field goal attempts, including 15-of-16 from 39 yards and in.
DEFENSE: With four defensive players taken among the first 44 picks
of the NFL Draft, Washington will need to lean on senior LB Travis
Feeney (60 tackles/4.5 avg/2 INT) to guide the Husky defense. He’s
the lone returning starter among the front seven that was second in
the league in stopping the run (124.0 ypg) and second in sacks (52
sacks/3.71 avg). Fortunately, the secondary returns three starters who
each collected 70 or more tackles last season. The trio of junior S Kevin King, sophomore S Budda Baker and sophomore CB Sidney Jones
combined for 206 tackles, 13 pass breakups and four interceptions.
Senior P Korey Durkee averaged 42.1 yards per punt and pinned the
opposition inside the 20 on 19 occasions.

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS
A QUICK LOOK AT THE COUGARS
OFFENSE: Losing a starting QB like Connor Halliday (WSU career
record 11,304 passing yards and 90 TDs) might have a big impact on
the success of an offense, but the Cougars look to sophomore Luke
Falk to lead the team without missing a beat. Afterall, he did complete
64.2 percent of his passes for 1,859 yards and 13 TDs in six games
(three as a starter) last season. Falk will throw to a talented group of receivers that include junior WR River Cracraft (66 rec/771 yds/8 TDs),
senior WR Dom Williams (43 rec/656 yds/9 TDs) and sophomore RB
Jamal Morrow (61 rec/460 yds). Morrow was also the team’s leading
rusher with 351 yards (4.0 avg). The entire offensive line returns intact, led by senior LT Joe Dahl and senior LG Gunnar Eklund. Both
have started each of the last 25 games. In fact, all 18 offensive lineman on scholarship last season return for the 2015 season.
DEFENSE: The Cougars were tough against the run, allowing 145.7
yards per game (4th in the Pac-12). Senior LBs Jeremiah Allison and
Kache Palacio key a defense that returns six starters. Allison is the
team’s top returning tackler with 78 and 8.5 tackles for loss, while
Palacio collected 57 tackles and topped the team with 6.5 sacks. Senior S Taylor Taliulu (68 tackles) anchors a young secondary. In addtion to Taliulu, the Cougars return a pair of starters in sophomores S
Darious Lemora (68 tackles) and CB Charleston White (34 tackles
and a team-best 13 PBU). The Cougar defense has the advantage of
opening the season against three non-conference foes that averaged
just 24.1 points per game. However, they’ll get tested right away in
the Pac-12 as they open league play with California (38.2 ppg) and at
Oregon (45.4 ppg).
