Baldwin Hills • Westside OASIS Learning and Volunteer Opportunities Winter-Spring 2016 Sponsored by National OASIS News The OASIS Institute • Winter/Spring 2016 OASIS volunteers make a big impact across the country with over 375,000 hours of service! hat do this techie, tutor and avid gardener have in common? That’s easy. W They have time, talents and a desire to give back to their communities. And they have OASIS. Jim Salih is a go-to guy for questions about technology with the OASIS Connections “Ask a Techie” class. No question is too small for Jim, who volunteers to provide one-on-one assistance for older adults in need of help with tablets, iPhones and laptops. “To see the amazement on someone’s face as they see what they can do with technology is really something,” he says. After one year as an OASIS tutor, Flora Bryant says she’s all in. Her efforts with a third grader named Marquis resulted in dramatic improvement in his reading test scores. He’s a thriving fourth grader now, and Flora’s life has also changed. “I’m more positive about my purpose in the world,” she says. Physical activity and healthy eating have long been part of Mary McFerson’s routine. She practices yoga, walks daily and gardens fruits and vegetables year round. As a CATCH Healthy Habits volunteer, she’s sharing what she does naturally with children, and encourages others to join in the fun. “You’ll have the time of your life interacting with young people, and get back your time and energy ten-fold! OASIS is an excellent example of the city of Los Angeles’ support and commitment to its older adult population. OASIS is nationally sponsored by the Macy’s Foundation, BJC HealthCare, Anthem Foundation and the AT&T Foundation. Joining OASIS You can join OASIS by completing the New Member Form on page # 54. A Note From our Director Dear OASIS Members and Friends, Since joining OASIS in August 2015 as your new Executive Director, I have enjoyed meeting the members, working with the volunteers, and building relationships with our community partners. My short time here has been enhanced by the genuine support and kindness displayed by many. Thank you all for such a warm welcome. This is an exciting time for OASIS. We are consistently identifying ways to enhance programming and opportunities for our members. Winter 2016 programming offers a variety of new classes/activities designed to meet the expressed interests of our members. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the leadership and support of our talented staff and dedicated Programs and Travel committee members. Nor would it be possible without the input from members who have offered suggestions and feedback. Beginning in 2016, we are pleased to offer extended exercise programming; decreasing the exercise class break time between semesters. We realize how important it is to remain active and this change will allow our members to maintain their health and fitness goals. Beginning this semester, I will host a Director’s Tea near the end of each semester. These meetings, held at the Baldwin Hills and Westside locations, will offer members an opportunity to continuously engage with me and other members, offer feedback, and discuss program/agency updates. We also plan to implement a bi-monthly YOUR VOICE: OASIS Newsletter where we will share a host of life-long learning, health, and community information. I would like to offer a special thank you to members and stakeholders who contributed to our Friends of OASIS campaign. Your support is invaluable and allows us to continuously strive towards remaining progressive through innovative programming. If you have not made your contribution, there is still time; simply visit/call the office for more information and someone will assist you. Additionally, I would like to thank all donors, OASIS Intergenerational Tutors, CATCH, center and committee member volunteers. We continue to strive because of your hard work and dedication and I am thoroughly grateful for your shared talents and gifts! I hope to see you all in 2016 and remember to tell a friend about OASIS. Please remember to sign up for the Director’s Tea sessions during registration. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Happy New Year!! All the Best, Stephanie L. Instead, they suffer from tiredness, heaviness, swelling, aching pains, burning, itching, cramps, restless leg syndrome, and even non-healing ulcers. While some people develop varicose veins, the others have so-called “spider” veins, yet other ones have swollen legs as a single sign of vein disease. Eventually and regardless of the type of venous disorder, the condition can lead to serious complications, including trophic ulcers, bleeding, infection and even blood clot formation. Join us for an informational lecture on these conditions, and a free screening for your own health! Day Trips & Excursions Eat Your Heart Out in Little Italy What goes together better than great Italian food and California sunshine? Experience a guided tour of Little Italy in San Diego, a neighborhood with an Italian presence since 1871. Six thousand families of Genovese and Sicilian origin once called this home. The salty sea air, the ready-made port, bougainvillea, geraniums, olive trees and cactus plants reminded many Italians of the sunny fishing villages back home. They painted their tine wood bungalow homes the colors favored by their ancestors. They built their own boats, fished with hand-sewn nets, cultivated fruit and vegetable gardens, made fresh pasta by hand and baked golden loves of sesame-topped Italian bread in igloo-shaped backyard ovens. For a time, paradise was theirs. On this tour, we recreate the world that was and showcase the hip and stylish neighborhood Little Italy has become. Your on-board, local expert will take you behind the scenes for the ultimate look inside this thriving community. Along the way, you’ll sample the flavors of Italy as you enjoy a progressive lunch. You’ll go into the kitchen at Il Monello Ristorante, one of Little Italy’s best restaurants, where you’ll meet Chef Fabrizio. He’ll introduce you to his way of cooking Italian and give you an opportunity to taste everything from Raspa Dura (an imported soft/ripe parmesan cheese) to imported bone-in prosciutto.
