The OASIS Institute • Winter/Spring 2016
OASIS volunteers make a big impact across the country
with over 375,000 hours of service!
hat do this techie, tutor and avid gardener have in common? That’s easy.
W
They have time, talents and a desire to give back to their communities. And they have OASIS.
Jim Salih is a go-to guy for
questions about technology with
the OASIS Connections “Ask a
Techie” class. No question is too
small for Jim, who volunteers to
provide one-on-one assistance
for older adults in need of
help with tablets, iPhones and
laptops. “To see the amazement
on someone’s face as they
see what they can do with
technology is really something,”
he says.
After one year as an OASIS tutor,
Flora Bryant says she’s all in. Her
efforts with a third grader named
Marquis resulted in dramatic
improvement in his reading test
scores. He’s a thriving fourth
grader now, and Flora’s life has
also changed.
“I’m more positive about my
purpose in the world,” she says.
Physical activity and healthy
eating have long been part
of Mary McFerson’s routine.
She practices yoga, walks
daily and gardens fruits and
vegetables year round. As
a CATCH Healthy Habits
volunteer, she’s sharing
what she does naturally with
children, and encourages
others to join in the fun. “You’ll
have the time of your life
interacting with young people,
and get back your time and
energy ten-fold!

About OASIS
OASIS is a national education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of mature adults. Offering
challenging programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer services, OASIS creates
opportunities for people to continue their personal growth and serve their communities.
About Our Sponsors
The OASIS Institute was established in St. Louis in 1982. The Institute is the headquarters for the network
and is widely recognized as a leader in the field of productive aging. The OASIS network is located in 51
cities serving a membership of more than 350,000 mature adults.
The City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, the original sponsor of OASIS in Los Angeles, embraced
the vision of OASIS when, more than 22 years ago, it provided financial, technical and information support
critical to the founding of our program. OASIS is an excellent example of the city of Los Angeles’ support and
commitment to its older adult population.
OASIS is nationally sponsored by the Macy’s Foundation, BJC HealthCare, Anthem Foundation and the
AT&T Foundation.
Joining OASIS
You can join OASIS by completing the New Member Form on page # 54. You can also join in person at
one of our OASIS centers or online at www.oasisnet.org. There is no membership fee. OASIS is open to all

A Note From
our Director
Dear OASIS Members and Friends,
Since joining OASIS in August 2015 as your new Executive Director, I have enjoyed
meeting the members, working with the volunteers, and building relationships with
our community partners. My short time here has been enhanced by the genuine
support and kindness displayed by many. Thank you all for such a warm welcome.
This is an exciting time for OASIS. We are consistently identifying ways to enhance
programming and opportunities for our members. Winter 2016 programming offers
a variety of new classes/activities designed to meet the expressed interests of our
members. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the leadership and support of our
talented staff and dedicated Programs and Travel committee members. Nor would it be possible without the
input from members who have offered suggestions and feedback.
Beginning in 2016, we are pleased to offer extended exercise programming; decreasing the exercise class
break time between semesters. We realize how important it is to remain active and this change will allow
our members to maintain their health and fitness goals. Beginning this semester, I will host a Director’s Tea
near the end of each semester. These meetings, held at the Baldwin Hills and Westside locations, will offer
members an opportunity to continuously engage with me and other members, offer feedback, and discuss
program/agency updates. We also plan to implement a bi-monthly YOUR VOICE: OASIS Newsletter
where we will share a host of life-long learning, health, and community information.
I would like to offer a special thank you to members and stakeholders who contributed to our Friends
of OASIS campaign. Your support is invaluable and allows us to continuously strive towards remaining
progressive through innovative programming. If you have not made your contribution, there is still time;
simply visit/call the office for more information and someone will assist you. Additionally, I would like to
thank all donors, OASIS Intergenerational Tutors, CATCH, center and committee member volunteers. We
continue to strive because of your hard work and dedication and I am thoroughly grateful for your shared
talents and gifts!
I hope to see you all in 2016 and remember to tell a friend about OASIS. Please remember to sign up for the
Director’s Tea sessions during registration. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Happy New Year!!
All the Best,
Stephanie L. Carter

this exciting adventure and get started creating a family

The Yin and Yang of Poetry
Fall in love with art history! Art history is an open
subject available to everyone with an interest in looking
at, thinking about, and understanding the visual arts.
Jack King returns to continue your art adventure
where you will meet some of the most famous people
in the world. Jack’s energy, enthusiasm and extensive
knowledge of art and artists have made his class one
of our most popular offerings. If you want a fun,
challenging, high energy experience, do not miss this
class. Warning: This class will fill quickly!
Let’s challenge ourselves and have fun as we experiment
with the idea of yin and yang to inspire our creativity.
In this poetry workshop, we will tap into the way
complimentary and opposing forces are at work in our
lives, and thus in the successful poems we write. Light
and dark, youth and old age, rising and falling are only
some of the examples of this ancient Chinese concept
at work. There will be stimulating discussion, poems
to read, and exercises to encourage you to be the poet
you always wanted to be. All writing levels welcome.

Jewish Roots in the Heart of
Modern Cinema
Where would the American movie industry be if it
weren’t for Jewish influence? The American Dream was
brought to life on the silver screen by the individuals
who built Hollywood. The funding of MGM founder
Louis B. Mayer and the talented mind of composer
Edward G. Robinson are just a couple of the European
immigrants who became the movers and shakers from
the late 19th and early 20th century cinema world. We
will explore how the “Promised Land” of Hollywood
refashioned the perspectives of how America saw itself,
and persevered through difficult historical moments,
such as World War II.

Saturday Night Fever (1977)
Nineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero (John
Travolta) lives for Saturday nights at the local disco,
where he’s king of the club, thanks to his stylish moves
on the dance floor. But outside of the club, things
don’t look so rosy. At home, Tony fights constantly
with his father and has to compete with his family’s
starry-eyed view of his older brother, a priest. Nor
can he find satisfaction at his dead-end job at a small
paint store. However, things begin to change when he
spies Stephanie Mangano (Karen Lynn Gorney) in the
disco and starts training with her for the club’s dance
competition. Stephanie dreams of the world beyond
Brooklyn, and her plans to move to Manhattan just
over the bridge soon change Tony’s life forever.

Film Screening: Sarah’s Key
(2010)
One of the darkest moments in French history occurred
in 1942 Paris when French officials rounded up over
10,000 Jews and placed them in local camps. Eventually
over 8,000 were sent to German concentration camps.
As 10-year old Sarah and her family are being arrested,
she hides her younger brother in a closet. After realizing
she will not be allowed to go home, Sarah does whatever
she can to get back to her brother. In 2009, a journalist
named Julia is on assignment to write a story on the
deported Jews in 1942. When she moves into her fatherin-law’s childhood apartment, she realizes it once
belonged to the Strazynski family, and their daughter
Sarah.
Film Screening: This is It (2009)
In the weeks before his death, Michael Jackson (August
29, 1958 - June 25, 2009) was rehearsing a show, ‘This Is
It,’ set to open in July. Hear from the team of dancers as
they recount their experiences working with him during
the early stages of the concert rehearsals at Staples
Center in Los Angeles. The film is arranged by musical
numbers with pre-recorded material and footage from
Jackson’s various rehearsals edited together to take us
through what would have been the concert’s set list.

The Reconstruction Era and the
“Black Lives Matter Movement”Parallel Challenge
After the U.S. Civil War ended in 1865, the country
was faced with unprecedented challenges regarding
how African Americans and other people of color
would fit into society and participate as citizens. Today,
hundreds of years later, the current Black Lives Matter
Movement points to the continued challenge for black
people, Latinos, and other people of color to participate
fully in society, even as we reach a point where many
parts of the U.S. are becoming “majority minority.”

TimeLessBody
The TimeLessBody System (TLB) is a wellness and
healing program developed by Nurit Krauss, originally
designed to heal a severe neck and spine injury. It is
suited for any body-type, age or fitness level to promote
physical wellness. TLB is built on movement sequences
that combine all aspects of fitness, as well as working
the feet; it activates the nervous system and extensively
stimulates the abdominal muscles. TLB is done on
the floor at a gentle pace using small, easy moves to
stimulate the entire body. It cleanses our system from
toxins and brings about a sense of balance, wellness and
joy. Please bring a yoga mat.

The Importance of Vein
Health & Screening
Despite the common belief that people with vein
problems always have varicosities, majority of patients
do not have visible signs of the disease at all. Instead,
they suffer from tiredness, heaviness, swelling, aching
pains, burning, itching, cramps, restless leg syndrome,
and even non-healing ulcers. While some people
develop varicose veins, the others have so-called
“spider” veins, yet other ones have swollen legs as a
single sign of vein disease. Eventually and regardless
of the type of venous disorder, the condition can lead
to serious complications, including trophic ulcers,
bleeding, infection and even blood clot formation. Join
us for an informational lecture on these conditions, and
a free screening for your own health!

Black History Month
in Allensworth Town - Baldwin
Hills Departure
The town of Allensworth was envisioned as a safe
haven for Blacks in the early 20th century. Under the
successful leadership of Colonel Allen Allensworth and
Professor William Payne, the town became an economic
powerhouse, with a thriving agricultural community
as well as many lucrative businesses. Come celebrate
Black History Month with us as we visit the historic
grounds where Allensworth once sprouted, grew,
and drew many families in a time of need. Tours and
lectures will be offered at the park about Allensworth’s
history, as well as other memorable African Americans.
On the way to the town of Allensworth, we will stop at
Golden Corral Restaurant for delicious food and drink.

Pageant of Our Lord
Now in its 31st year, the “Pageant of Our Lord” is
presented annually during the Easter season by Rolling
Hills Covenant Church. Over 200,000 people have
enjoyed Pageant of Our Lord. Each year, fifteen art
pieces are presented by live models with magnificent
orchestrations from a 60-voice choir and original
narration to lead the audience on a unique journey
through Christ’s life. Over 400 volunteers donate
hundreds of hours each year to bring this unique gospel
presentation to believers and non-believers alike.
Inspired by the world-famous “Pageant of the Masters”
in Laguna Beach, the “Pageant of Our Lord” depicts
the Biblical story of the Old and New Testaments as
told through great works of art. These masterpieces are
replicated live on stage with living models. After the
show, we will stop for a family-style lunch at Buca di
Beppo, including spaghetti with marinara sauce, chicken
parmigiana, fettucini alfredo, mixed green salad, Caesar
salad, and your choice of cheesecake or chocolate cake.
Drinks include coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

Eat Your Heart Out in
Little Italy
What goes together better than great Italian food
and California sunshine? Experience a guided tour
of Little Italy in San Diego, a neighborhood with an
Italian presence since 1871. Six thousand families of
Genovese and Sicilian origin once called this home.
The salty sea air, the ready-made port, bougainvillea,
geraniums, olive trees and cactus plants reminded
many Italians of the sunny fishing villages back home.
They painted their tine wood bungalow homes the
colors favored by their ancestors. They built their own
boats, fished with hand-sewn nets, cultivated fruit
and vegetable gardens, made fresh pasta by hand and
baked golden loves of sesame-topped Italian bread in
igloo-shaped backyard ovens. For a time, paradise was
theirs. On this tour, we recreate the world that was and
showcase the hip and stylish neighborhood Little Italy
has become.
Your on-board, local expert will take you behind
the scenes for the ultimate look inside this thriving
community. Along the way, you’ll sample the flavors
of Italy as you enjoy a progressive lunch. You’ll go into
the kitchen at Il Monello Ristorante, one of Little Italy’s
best restaurants, where you’ll meet Chef Fabrizio.
He’ll introduce you to his way of cooking Italian
and give you an opportunity to taste everything from
Raspa Dura (an imported soft/ripe parmesan cheese)
to imported bone-in prosciutto. Lunch concludes with
authentic Italian gelato at Café Zucchero.

Heart and Soul of L.A.
A plaque in Olvera Street Plaza commemorates 44 early
settlers and founding families at the starting point of your
day tour exploring the heart and soul of Los Angeles.
You’ll be joined for the day by a local guide who will
take you on a journey to discover the diverse cultures
that are alive and well. Your guide will introduce you to
some of L.A.’s best kept secrets including architecturally
rich Wset Adams Heights, the Sugar Hill neighborhood,
Leimert Park, the Bradbury Building, and visit the
memorial of “Biddy Mason.” Here you can pay tribute
to her and her lifetime achievements before heading to
lunch at Dulan’s on Crenshaw. This restaurant features
Southern homestyle cooking at its finest. For over 25
years, they have been serving some of the best Soul
Food in Los Angeles with recipes passed down through
the generations. Lunch options include: southern fried
chicken, smothered chicken, smothered pork chops,
short ribs, fried or baked fish, or meatloaf. All dishes
come with a choice of two sides, peach cobbler or sweet
potato pie, and coffee, hot tea, or iced tea. After lunch,
you’ll travel to Exposition Park, and visit the California
African-American Museum. On your guided tour at the
museum, you’ll discover a culture that has contributed
greatly to the arts, humanities, sciences, politics,
religion, and sports. This museum tour will test your

form. If attending a trip, participants will sign a waiver on
the day of the trip. OASIS reserves the right to decline a member’s participation in a class or a trip.
Note
Registrants and participants permit the taking of videotapes and photographs of themselves during

should notify the photographer or staff.

Class Refunds
Program fees are non-refundable unless OASIS cancels the program or if you have a medical

attempt to fill your spot. If OASIS is able to fill your spot, we will issue you a credit for the cost of
the trip, less a $15 trip processing fee. If we are unable to fill your spot, we will not be able to issue
you a credit for a trip. No refunds or credits given for day of cancellations.

the fee amount. If you are not confirmed, the check is returned to you.
