McNichols has been honored for his
team’s success. On seven occasions, McNichols has been
named MVC Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year
(1986-1988-1990-1993-1997-2001-2006),
four-different
selections as the NCAA District V Outdoor Track and Field

has been named the MVC Cross Country Coach of the Year
(1996-1998, 2004-06).
In addition to his team and personal accolades, the ISU
program has had success on the national level. The men’s
track and Field team placed in the top 20 three years in a
row from 1999 to 2001. At the NCAA Indoor Championships,
the Sycamores placed 11th in 1990.

Scott Keeney (2008).
Besides
his
team’s
successes on the course, one of
his greatest accomplishments
to date has been the design
and development of the
nation’s finest cross country
course at the Wabash Valley
Family Sports Center. The
course served as the site of the 2002 NCAA Division I
Cross Country Championships and will also host the NCAA
Championships through 2009. Additionally, the course has
served as the host of four NCAA Great Lakes Regional
meets and the Missouri Valley Conference Championships
on two occasions.
McNichols graduated from Indiana University with his
bachelor’s in 1972 and his master’s in 1977. Prior to coming
to ISU in 1983, he enjoyed a successful stint as the head
boys track and Field coach at Bloomington North High
School in Bloomington, Ind.
Throughout his years at Indiana State, McNichols has
been active in many of the nation’s and the world’s top meets.

As he enters his 21st season at Indiana
State, John Gartland believes that this year’s
squad has the potential to be one of the best
women’s track and Field teams in Indiana
State history.
Gartland is just one of 11
coaches in the history
of the Missouri
Valley Conference
to be named to the
league’s track and
Field All-Centennial
Team. The veteran
women’s head coach
joins ISU men’s head
coach John McNichols
on the list to form the only
coaching tandem in the
league currently on the alltime list.
The honor stems from
his team’s successes
over
two decades on the
course and on the track,
including two cross country
conference titles (1991, 1993),
four indoor track conference titles
(1992-94, 2001) and six outdoor crowns (1991-94, 199899). Gartland’s squads have also fared well at the national
level as well, as the women’s track and Field teams have
finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships three
times.
Gartland is not only responsible for the overall direction
of the entire women’s program, but also mentors the
women’s and men’s middle distance runners, the women’s
distance runners and the men’s and women’s high jumpers
in the Sycamores’ combined track and Field program.
Indiana State distance runners have often found their
way to the top indoors and outdoors during Gartland’s
tenure at ISU. Debbi Ramseyer highlights an impressive
group of runners as a winner of nine combined titles in
Page 18
championships to go along
with 12 combined allconference selections. Also
included in that group are
All-American Angie Martin,
a three-time all-conference
selection, who currently
serves as an assistant coach
on the ISU, Angela Lansing,
who serves as the athletic
department’s senior
women’s administrator
and athletics business
manager, and Jessica
Wayton, wife of Coach
Geoff Wayton, who was
a cross country AllAmerican in 2003.
Several Sycamore
high jumpers have also
flourished under the
guidance of Gartland,
including Steve Smith who
qualified for four combined
NCAA Championships and
added three second-place finishes (1991 Indoor, 1992
Indoor and 1994 outdoor). Smith later went on to win a
silver medal at the 1995 Pan-American Games, placed
seventh at the 1995 Indoor World Championships in
Barcelona, Spain, and participated in the U.S. Olympic
Trials in 1992, 1996 and 2000. In all, high jumpers have
qualified for the NCAA Championships 13 times under
Gartland’s leadership.
Prior to accepting his position at Indiana State,
Gartland served an assistant track coach and women’s
cross country coach from 1982-88 at Western Michigan.
His Broncos won three-consecutive Mid-American
Conference titles from 1984-86 and he mentored 13 MAC
individual champions and six runners-up in the throws and

Before heading to
Western Michigan, Gartland
served as a graduate
assistant track coach and
women’s cross country
coach at Indiana under head
coach Sam Bell from 198082. Under his guidance, the
Hoosier women finished sixth
in the Big Ten in cross country and second in the NCAA
Regional Meet while two of his runners advanced to the
NCAA Championships in 1981.
Gartland’s coaching ledger began in Wisconsin, where
he was the head boy’s cross country coach at Madison
Edgewood High School from 1976-78. He also served as
the assistant girl’s track coach at Edgewood in 1976 before
being named the head coach in 1977 and the boy’s head
coach in 1978. From there, he moved on to become the
head boy’s track coach at Madison West High School from
1978-80, while also spending time as a part-time assistant
men’s track coach at Wisconsin from 1979-80.
Aside from coaching, Gartland currently serves as the
president of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches
Association and has been the Assistant Meet Director at
the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2002 and from

Angela Martin
Seventh Year
Angela Martin (formerly Bruecker)
enters her seventh year at Indiana State,
where she coaches the long sprinters and
combined event athletes.
Under her guidance during the 2008
season, sophomore Erica Moore won the
MVC Indoor title in the women’s 400 meters
(55.35) and junior Sean Wright was second in the MVC Indoor
men’s 400 meters (47.95).
During the 2007 season, Sean Wright provisionally qualified for
the NCAA 400 meter dash indoors en route to breaking a 25-yearold school record. Under Martin’s direction, Wright also broke the
outdoor school record (46.23), qualified for the NCAA Mideast
Regional in the 400 meters, and anchored the regional qualifying 4
x 400 meter relay. Martin also coached Erica Moore, who became
the most versatile athlete in school history when she provisionally
qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon and set
ISU school records in the pentathlon, heptathlon, and 400 meter
hurdles.
Before returning to ISU, Martin served as a coach at Lawrence
North High School in Indianapolis, Ind. There, she coached the
2002 state runner up in both the 400 meters and the 4 x 800 meter
relay and state qualifiers in the 4 x 400 meter relay and high jump.
A student-athlete from 1997-2001, Martin was a three–time
Missouri Valley Conference champion in the 400 meter hurdles.
Her quest to achieve All-American honors in 2000 is a rags to
riches story. Having never run the 800-meter run in high school
and having only run it once as a freshman, she began training for
the race with a passion. In less than a year, her desire culminated
with an all-time 800-meter indoor Missouri Valley Conference
record of 2:06.19 at the NCAA Championships, where she placed
8th. Outdoors, she went on to run 2:06.05 and finished 18th at the
NCAA meet. During the summer of 2007, Martin was named to the
MVC All-Centennial Team for middle distance to join some of the
best track & Field athletes of all-time.
In addition to her success on the track, Martin was an outstanding
student-athlete. She graduated from Indiana State with a degree in
art education and a minor in physical education. Her laurels as a
student-athlete also earned her the prestigious Hillman Award for
being the best senior athlete at Indiana State in 2001. She has also
earned her master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis
in coaching from ISU.
Angela is joined on the staff by her husband, Jeff. They reside in
Terre Haute and have a two year old daughter, Emma, and newborn
son, Blake, born Jan. 10, 2009.
Geoff Wayton
Fourth Year
Geoff Wayton enters his fourth year of
coaching at ISU after a successful career
with the Sycamores (1995-2000). During
his time as an athlete, Wayton became the
first Sycamore distance runner to capture
an individual conference title at the Missouri
Valley Conference Championships, was
twice all-district in cross country, and was named to the Missouri
Valley Conference’s All-Centennial Team in 2007. Wayton was
also a prominent member of the first two MVC championship cross
Page 20
country teams at Indiana State.
Following graduation, Wayton took part in the 2000 United States
Olympic Committee’s Altitude Training Study in Dallas, Texas, and
Park City, Utah. From 2001-2002, he served as the head coach of
the Academy of Holy Angels boys and girls cross country and track
teams in RichField, Minn., during which the boys team was ranked
7th in the state in 2001. His 4 x 1600m team also qualified for
the Adidas Outdoor National Championships, and a record number
of athletes advanced to state competition. In 2005, he became
the head coach of Northview High School’s girls cross county and
track teams in Brazil, Indiana. Under Wayton, the team was the
conference runner-up in track, advancing two athletes to the 2005
Indiana State Championships. The following fall, his cross country
team captured the Western Indiana Conference Championship.
Working alongside Angie Martin, Wayton has helped improve
the Indiana State sprinters’ contribution from 16 to 73 points at the
MVC Championships in just two years. His first year saw Jerry
Clopton become the first male Sycamore sprinter to advance to the
NCAA regional championships in the 200m. Year two saw Jeramie

Jeff Martin
Third Year
Jeff Martin begins his third year as the
pole vault, long jump and triple jump coach.
During his first two years as an assistant
coach, Martin has had six athletes qualify
and compete in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor
Championship. His athletes also have had
great success at the MVC Championship
as well. He has guided athletes to nine
conference titles and 19 All-MVC awards.
During the 2008 season, three of Martin’s athletes broke school
records: Kylie Hutson in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, Lauren
Martin outdoor triple jump, and Steve Daniel outdoor triple jump.
In addition to breaking these school records, all three advanced to
the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Hutson
enjoyed her 2008 season by breaking both the indoor and outdoor

three men over the 52-foot mark in the triple jump. His athletes
continue to place and win MVC championships in the horizontal
jumps.

the Terre Haute South Braves to a girl’s track and Field regional
team championship in 2006 and a boy’s track and Field regional and
sectional team championship in 2005. His cross country teams also

records, qualified for state 58 times, named all-state 20 times,
captured 12 individual regional championships and 43 individual
sectional championships.
