Section B • December 16, 2004 Some holiday traditions are too delicious to change Santa visits Urbanna Michaela Chowning visits with Santa following the Urbanna Christmas Parade on December 3. Helping Santa, from left, are Little Miss Spat Maggie Bull, “Little Miss Snowflake” Morgan Hensley, who was runner-up in the Urbanna Oyster Festival competition, and “Snow Queen” Rachel Brooks, who was runner-up in the Oyster Festival Queen Competition. (Photo by Tom Chillemi) by Larry S. Chowning Christmas is not only the time when family members gather to celebrate the birth of Christ, but also a time to commemorate family traditions. From all across the country, children will return “home” during the holiday season to visit parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. For many families, the gathering will consist of their once-a-year fellowship that includes a prayer, the best meal of the year, gift giving, and enjoying the decorations and joy that goes with the season. For children the gifts are often the high point of the day, but for most adults the food rates pretty high. Not so many years ago, Christmas fare on most Tidewater Virginia tables might be the largest smoked or salt-cured ham in the smokehouse, salt-herring with cornbread and molasses, a wild turkey, a baked rockfish, or Rappahannock River oysters— raw, baked or fried. Whatever, the food it would melt in your mouth. Today, many folks carry on holiday food traditions and some of the more modern dishes will also melt in your mouth. Every Christmas, Peggy Baughan of Remlik said Christmas morning breakfast at her brother’s always includes oyster stew. The main family meal is always in the evening and it includes turkey, ham and fried oysters. The favorite dessert is always her mother’s Mrs. Julie Haynes and her famous peanut brittle made with raw (See Traditions, page B2) peanuts. (Photo by Larry Chowning) Christmas Friends to deliver gifts Saturday; fund at $13,691 Christmas Friends got a boost this week with $6,312.50 in donations and the fund now totals $13,691.10. Christmas Friends is in its 19th year of helping the less fortunate of Middlesex County during the holidays. The annual gift-giving program is co-sponsored by the Southside Sentinel and the Middlesex County Department of Social Services. Through the generosity of the community donors and the work of more than 100 volunteers, Christmas Friends Inc. delivers gifts and needed items to needy children and elderly citizens who qualify. This year’s Christmas Friends goal is to raise $20,000, the same as the past three years, said Christmas Friends president Fred Gaskins. Last year the community surpassed the goal and donated $24,176. This allowed the amount allotted for each recipient to be increased this year, said Gaskins. Plenty of persons have already volunteered to shopped the gifts and wrap them. Other are ready to deliver gifts this Saturday. Recipients should plan to have someone home to accept the gifts. Donations should be made payable to Christmas Friends Inc., c/o Southside Sentinel, P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA 23175. Contributors will be recognized as Christmas Friends and their donations will be listed in the Southside Sentinel. Contributors who wish to remain anonymous should request that their donations be listed as such. Memorial contributions will also be acknowledged. Her mother makes cinnamon rolls with bread dough, pecans and brown sugar and lots of butter, which she starts baking in the morning. The recipe was handed down through her family. Family members open presents while the rolls are baking. The entire house smells of cinnamon and once presents are opened, the family enjoys the rolls. At dinnertime, around 3 p.m., Burwood’s father makes pea and cheese salad with cold peas, chunks of cheddar cheese, sweet pickles and a homemade dressing concoction with a mayonnaise base. The entire family takes small portions while her father dishes up a heaping mound. Liz Delmer of Deltaville remembers some of her old family traditions. The Bristow family would go to the Norton home on Lover’s Lane in Deltaville for Christmas. Her grandparents usually raised a Christmas turkey that was slaughtered for the day. They also had country ham out of the smokehouse, canned sweet potatoes, turnip greens cooked in bacon grease, hot rolls, corn pudding, homemade fruitcake, coconut and chocolate cake, and sweet potato pie. “I couldn’t wait for the day I was big enough to eat at the big table because the children’s table was always served last,” said Mrs. Delmer. “Everybody in the family came home for Christmas and I couldn’t wait to get to grandmother’s on Christmas day.” For breakfast at her home, Mrs. Delmer’s mother made oyster stew, hot biscuits and homemade sausage, and served grapefruit. “Grapefruit was a special treat when I was a child,” she said. Carstella West of Wake said she makes fruitcakes every year for Christmas. Her daughter recently came down from Maryland just to help and carry on the tradition. They made eight fruitcakes. Mrs. West learned to make cakes on an old wood-burning cook stove at her great-aunt’s house in Wake. “My great-aunt taught me how to make them and the key is cooking them for a long time.” She noted that her great-aunt would let them cook on a woodstove for three hours. Julie Haynes of Saluda makes peanut brittle every year for Christmas. She got the recipe six years ago from a friend who learned to make it from Mrs. Irwin Fisher, whose husband was a former minister at New Hope United Methodist Church. Christmas Traditions... HAPPY HOLIDAYS! MARSHALL ’S DRUG URBANNA 804 7585344 (continued from page B1) The interesting thing about Mrs. Haynes’ peanut brittle is that she has to make it on sunny days where there is little moisture in the air. “When I first started making it, I lost several batches because I tried to make it on rainy days,” she explained. “I make it for all my children and grandchildren and they all love it.” Ronnie and Cathy Russell of Water View always go to Urbanna to spend Christmas evening at the home of Catherine and Dick Murray. “Dick always fixes his famous “oyster stew,” said Ronnie. “I don’t know what it is but no one can fix oyster stew like Dick,” he said. “Catherine tries sometimes, but it just doesn’t taste like Dick’s..” Cathy and Catherine are cousins. Bill Hight of Urbanna fondly remembers Elizabeth Bristow’s annual “Sweet Supper” on Christmas night. Mrs. Nellie Bristow started the tradition in the late 1800s and Mrs. Bristow carried on the tradition into the 1980s. The Bristows owned Bristow’s Store and lived on Watling Street. “She would have everything you could think of that was sweet,” said Hight. “She had sweet potato, chocolate and apple pies, homemade candy and cookies, and sweet punch. It was all homemade and old fashion.” B.B. Fritter of Urbanna recalls that her mother, Mrs. May Baker, always made eggnog, dark fruitcake, tomato aspic and ambrosia for Christmas. Tomato aspic is a jam that is made into a congealed salad, and ambrosia is a concoction of oranges, grapefruit, pineapple and other fruits. Legend has it that Greek and Roman gods ate ambrosia, said Mrs. Fritter. Margie Hall of Urbanna recalls that her grandmother and mother always made wine jelly and homemade custard during the holiday season. The wine jelly was made from Irish Rose wine. “My mother always used to say Irish Rose wine didn’t taste good at all from the bottle, but it made great wine jelly.” For many, many others in the Middlesex area, Christmas food is a reminder of the special gifts that come with the spirit of the season, and it often brings back wonderful memories. We often meet by accident, but we’re always glad to know you’re there. Thanks and Merry Christmas. LEASURE’S WRECKER SERVICE, INC. Everyone is cordially invited. Ministerial Association by Rev. George Insley Community Tabernacle As we enter this holiday season, let’s remember the reason for our celebration! We the members of the Body of Christ, here in Middlesex County and surrounding areas are God’s messengers of good news. We know and must share the truth at this appointed time. Most of our neighbors and friends will unwittingly get caught up in the grasp of materialistic greed; and if we do not do our part, some will fall into despair. Let’s join those who have gone before us and make our declaration known. Zacharias (father of John the Baptist) in the first chapter of Luke says, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He hath visited and redeemed His people, and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.” Isaiah, the prophet, declares to us from his book, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of host will perform this.” His Name is above all others. This Name will one day cause all knees to bow . . . yours, mine . . . for all time. Do you know the Name? Are you allied with the Name? Lives are hanging in the balance! Won’t you join myself, Pastor George Insley of Community Tabernacle, and others this season, and share the Name? Virginia P. Special thank you to Tom Hardin, editor of the Southside Sentinel. He has been of enormous support to us this year, and this columnist especially appreciates his patience with her! Changing casts of church members in authentic costumes will portray all of the familiar Bible characters who were present at the manger during and after the birth of Christ. The living reenactment of the Nativity is intended to remind observers of the true meaning of Christmas. The public is invited to drive or walk by the scene, or to park in the church parking lot each evening. Beth Straw, chairman of the event, said, “We hope this presentation will provide ideal opportunities for families to take time from busy schedules and pause to consider what Christ really means to them.” There will be three 45-minute presentations each evening. Characters in each scene will include the Baby Jesus, His parents, wise men, shepherds and angels. Mrs. Straw said that several roles have not yet been filled. Local residents who would like to participate can register on a sign-up board at the church or call Straw at 758-3307. The chancel choir, youth and children will present, “Holy Child.” The prayer is that this celebration of music will cause everyone to experience the Christmas story as if they were hearing it for the first time. “May the majesty, the mystery, the miracle of the incarnation be a very real part of your ’A Christmas Story‘ is Sunday Season’s Greetings from 0HPEHU)',&(TXDO+RXVLQJ/HQGHU CHRIST OUR SAVIOR IS BORN May your holiday be filled with the blessings of His faith and love.
