& Girls Clubs, Wesley Neighborhood
House, and the Light House, through
which we provide Big Brothers and Big
Sisters who connect with their Littles at
each of the three partner sites.
• Partnerships with three prominent
African-American fraternities – Omega
Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Kappa
Alpha Psi – have led to additional
funds AND more African-American

Ten years ago, Alex’s mother noticed
that her then seven-year-old son
seemed to grow sad when activities at
school or day care included projects
in preparation for Father’s Day. You see,
Alex had no father in his life. His mother
soon realized that Alex at least needed
someone to do “guy things” with. about their futures. They worry about
rough times, and they wonder if this
friendship is perhaps too good to be
true.
Enter Robert…and Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Kentuckiana.
Robert worked at the airport,
supervising the parking of UPS planes. He was young, with no kids of his
own, and he thought it might be fun to
volunteer as a Big Brother.
Robert says that soon after being
matched with Alex, his new Little
Brother had a question: “How long will
you be my Big Brother?” Robert’s reply
was simple. “I’m not going anywhere,”
he said. “I’ll be your Big Brother as
long as you want me.”
Alex’s worries were typical of our Little
Brothers and Sisters. They all think
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana
has faced some rough times of our
own. Last year, for example, our budget
lost $300,000 when the Children of
Prisoners program was cancelled
(along with many other federally
funded programs).
We served more than 1,000 children
of prisoners during the nine years
that program funding was available.
Though the money is now gone,
the children aren’t—they still need
our support.
So what do we do? We rely, as always,
on the generosity of our community
partners, and the leadership of our
board and staff, and we focus ever
more intently on a positive future. Positives aren’t hard to come by. Here
are two examples:
In the face of budgetary challenges,
we have relied upon efficiency and
performance management to keep us
focused on the quality and impact of
our matches. We’re able to measure our
success by comparing our Littles with
their unmatched counterparts. What
we find are higher high school and
college graduation rates for our Littles;
higher incomes in adulthood; and higher
rates of commitment to community and
military service.
Remember Alex? He graduated from
Trinity High School last year and, with
the urging of Big Brother Robert, he is
attending the University of Louisville’s
Speed School of Engineering.
Who knows if Alex still worries about
the future? We know his future is
brighter for having been matched with
a Big Brother. And we know the future
is brighter for the thousands of other
children who have been and will be
matched with Big Brothers and Big
Sisters.
That’s something we can all feel
good about.

Programs
Community-Based
Programs
The community-based
program is the “traditional”
Big Brothers Big Sisters
relationship. The schedule is
flexible to meet the needs of
Bigs and Littles in different
kinds of situations — on the
weekend, in the evening, after
school, etc. It’s all about the
time spent together doing
things you both enjoy.
• 2–3 times per month
• Flexible schedule
• Focus on friendship
• Must be 18 years old
•Have your own transportation
and valid car insurance
Site-Based Programs
In site-based programs, Bigs
and Littles meet for one-toone sessions in the classroom,
school library, neighborhood
community center or other
familiar location. Bigs and
Littles typically meet once a
week to read together, play
sports or computer games,
or simply talk about life and
personal issues — just as
friends do.
• 1 hour per week
• Focus on schoolwork
and friendship
• Visit the child on school/
site grounds
• High school students and
adults accepted as volunteers
Initiatives
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Kentuckiana, we realize some
children in our community
have unique needs that
require special attention.
That’s why we’ve also created
the following programs:
Rico’s Roundtable aims to
close the achievement gap
between students of color
and white students. Various
partners sit under the Rico’s
Roundtable umbrella, which
acts as a clearinghouse by
matching the needs of
students to the skills of
partner organizations and
the volunteers and resources
they provide.
Hispanic Leadership Council
engages the Hispanic
community by increasing the
number of Hispanic matches,
enhancing awareness of issues
facing the local Hispanic
population, and organizing a
Hispanic Advisory Board. Mentoring Military Children
focuses on serving children
who have a family member
in the military, as well as
volunteers who have served in
or worked for the military.
Project Dream was created
with support from the
Kentucky Developmental
Disabilities Network. Project
Dream matches children,
aged 7 to 16, who have a
developmental disability with a
caring Big Brother or Big Sister.
Mentoring Children of
Prisoners (MCP) matches
children of incarcerated parents.
Project Bolld matches children
with learning disabilities.
Couples Match allows couples
to work together as a Big for
a child.
Pilots
Enhanced Site-Based
Model (ESBM) is centered
on increased training and
increased match support,
focusing only on mentors and
mentees who can commit to
two years.
High School Bigs Pilot is a
program that matches high
school Big Brothers and Big
Sisters with elementary school
students, one-to-one.

Stories of Success
Over the last several decades, the
Big Brothers Big Sisters program
has met children with family
issues so complicated, we weren’t
sure we could help. Three of those
were Damien, Amber and Steve.
How We Met
When our enrollment specialist
arrived for a preliminary home
visit, she found Damien’s home
only by spotting a large street
number spray-painted on the side
of a trailer in a remote part of a
county. Inside, pieces of the floor
were missing, the entire family
slept in one room and running
water and electricity were an
occasional luxury. Sitting on the
couch was Damien, who had no
idea there was a world outside
that trailer.
Next, there was Amber, a young
girl introduced to Child Protective
Services because of neglect and
abuse. Child Protective Services,
in turn, introduced Amber to
Big Brothers Big Sisters. Amber
was a sweet child living in a
complicated family situation, with
one parent in prison.
And then there was Steve, a
middle school student and one
of our first Littles matched with
a volunteer in our in-school
program. Although Steve’s
school counselor warned the
new Big Brother that Steve must
learn to control his temper, the
Big wasn’t quite prepared for
his introduction to Steve: in the
suspension room, where the child
sat with knuckles bloodied from
a fight.
Getting Involved
Damien, Amber and Steve were
matched with volunteer Bigs who
helped lighten the children’s load
by means of a positive outlook,
creativity and a refusal to give up.
The friendships grew and
flourished with the support of our
staff members who helped bring
other resources to the family,
communicated to the volunteers
the difference they were making
and encouraged them when times
got tough.
Each child in our program has
an individual story and their own
challenges born of conditions
outside their control. All of them
deserve a friend who won’t give up
or judge them, but will appreciate
their unique personalities and
unlimited potential.
A Lasting Impact
This year Damien, Amber, and
Steve will all graduate from high
school. Each is going to college.
And each credits the Big Brother
or Sister who helped and cheered
them on when they needed it, and
who expects them to return the
favor as future Big Brothers or
Big Sisters to the next generation
of children. These present and
future Big Brothers and Big
Sisters are changing our entire
community by impacting mental
health, graduation rates and the
economy. Most important, they
are changing lives — now and for
future generations.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is about having fun to help kids and is our most important
fund-raising event. Funds raised go directly toward matching children with
carefully screened, caring Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is an
easy and enjoyable way to make a positive difference. Donors know that their
support is helping put Big Brothers and Big Sisters in children’s lives. Bowlers
enjoy a fun outing with friends — as well as the satisfaction of knowing they’re
making a big difference to kids right here in their community.
