GROSSE POINTE CRISIS CLUB
COMEDY NIGHT 2011
Friday – September 30th
The Grosse Pointe Crisis Club Comedy Night is back by popular demand. This
year, making an encore appearance, is Steve Bills.
From The President
Greetings,
I want to recognize Ted Eikhoff and
Mike Arnett for taking the lead for
another successful Kotcher’s Kapers
Golf Outing. Special recognition goes
to Jim Maniere whose tenacious efforts
resulted in the sale of over forty Tee
sponsorships which made the outing a
financial success. Steve Graus was our
Master of Ceremonies and orchestrated
a flawless presentation program. These
men, along with our member volunteers
assured that our attendees had the
great time we have come to expect at
our annual golf outing. Please take
a look at page 5 and acknowledge
those businesses and individuals who
contributed their time and resources to
make this outing a success. I sincerely
hope that you will take note of our
sponsors when you make a purchase,
whether it be an automobile, a gift of
jewelry or the selection of a financial
counselor. Our Tee Sponsors support
our Club and I encourage you to
support them.
Please mark your calendar for Friday,
September 30th for our always popular
Comedy Night, this year featuring Steve
Bills. This is an encore appearance by
Steve who last entertained the Club
several years ago. Recently, Steve has

Michigan native Steve Bills is currently house MC for the Comics On Duty
world tour, performing at military bases around the country. Over the years
Steve has had the pleasure of working with some of the biggest names in the
stand-up biz, like Lewis Black, Gilbert Gottfreid, Christopher Titus, Sherman
Hemsley, Norm MacDonald, Pauly Shore and more. His offbeat, sophisticated
material matched with a smooth delivery and edgy wit keeps his audiences
guffawing.
Local comedian Tom Massey will open the show. Tom’s high energy presentation
will keep you laughing so sit tight and hold on for a fun ride.
This years’ show will be hosted by the clubs’ resident master of ceremonies
Rich Higgenbottom commonly found entertaining at Joey's Comedy Club/
Kickers Ultra Lounge in Livonia, MI.
Past attendees have said comedy night is “the best value on the Eastside”;
generous cocktails, great food and excellent entertainment in a social setting
with friends, family and business associates. The Crisis Club is promoting
couples attendance so please make every effort to attend. A flyer is included
with this newsletter. Please confirm your attendance at the event and contact
Ted Eikhoff as soon as possible at [email protected].

Crisis Case Corner
By Don Vormelker, Crisis Case Director
Case 1440
Investigators: J. Oreson - D. Vormelker
The VanElslander Cancer Center referred a woman from
Warren who is currently undergoing treatment for breast
cancer and is scheduled to have surgery within the next
two months. Her only source of income, at present, is
short-term disability. She should be able to return to
work shortly after the surgery. The Crisis Club assisted by
making a mortgage payment and provided Meijer gift cards
for food and necessities.
Case 1441
Investigators: B. Balcerzak - D. Vormelker
A 67 year-old retired single man is being treated for lung
cancer with Social Security retirement benefit as his only
source of income. During his treatment regiment he had a
number of unexpected expenses due to his illness and fell
behind on his DTE Energy bill. The Crisis Club brought his
DTE bill up-to-date which allowed him to get back on the
budget plan.
Case 1442
Investigators: J. Oreson - D. Vormelker
A family of three, living in Detroit, was also referred by
the VanElslander Cancer Center. The father has been off
work as a truck driver due to treatment for brain cancer.
The wife works and the family just started receiving longterm disability benefits but fell behind on their mortgage
payment. The Crisis Club paid two mortgage payments
and provided Meijer gift cards for food.
Case 1443
Investigators: J. Oreson - D. Vormelker
A local church contacted the Crisis Club on behalf of one
of its members who is being treated for cancer. Upon
investigation it was determined that the married sixty-four
year-old man was no longer able to work in construction
because of his illness. The husband was forced to apply for
an early Social Security benefit and, while his wife found a
part-time job, they fell behind on their mortgage payment,
DTE and Consumers Power bills. The Crisis Club made
one mortgage payment and brought their utility bills
up-to-date.
PLEASE NOTE!
We encourage our members to refer people or
families in a possible crisis or emergency, but we
ask our members to contact the Crisis Director or
any Trustee in person. Please do not give anyone
the hot-line number, or the telephone number of
case investigators or any other Crisis Club member.
Thank You Notes Received
Case 1436
Dear Jerry and the entire Grosse Pointe Crisis Club,
Thank you so for what you have done to help our family.
It really is hard to find the words to express how grateful
we are to all of you. We want you to know that your
kindness and generosity is helping our family get through
a very difficult and stressful time. Thank you all so much!
It’s hard to find words nice enough to thank people as
nice as you!
Case 1439
Words cannot express my appreciation for the help you
have given me with two months rent. Sorry I did not write
sooner but was under the weather a lot for awhile, just
starting to feel a little better. Again thank you so much.
Case 1442
Thank you doesn’t seem like it’s enough to say—you never
want things like this to happen to anyone. We never
thought we would be in this situation but it is good to
know that there are people and places out there to turn
to when you need help—help of any kind. Thank You…
Thank You.
From the President (continued from page 1)
spent considerable time touring military installations and
entertaining the men and women serving our country.
Details on this evening of entertainment are on page 1.
I know this will be an entertaining evening and will be
a great night to bring your spouse or significant other to
a Club function and introduce potential members to our
organization.
Also on page 1 are the pictures of those members who have
placed their names in nomination for the Board of Trustees.
The election is on Thursday, November 3rd and I encourage
you to attend and vote. You will note, in an article on page
6, that the By-Laws regarding the number of Trustees to be
elected and certain voting procedures have been modified.
Please familiarize yourself with these modification prior to
voting. As I’m sure you’re aware, this is a complementary
evening, sponsored by your Club featuring an ongoing
appetizer buffet and open bar, and new members applying
for membership that night will also be guests of the Club.
Drew Dungan’s article on page 7 highlights the Kroger
Community Rewards quarterly payment of $259.75. This
is an easy means to supplement our fundraising efforts and
reflects the contribution of the eighteen households who
have designated the Crisis Club as their charity of choice. If
you, your family and friends aren’t enrolled, please take the
time to do so and take advantage of this painless method to
support your Club.
I thank you for your continued support and look forward to
seeing you at our upcoming events.
Regards,

2011 Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outing
The Crisis Club had another hot afternoon at the annual Kotcher’s Kapers Golf
Outing and, this year, the only thing hotter than the weather were two foresomes lead by Gil Manella & Tim DeMeulenaere.
Challenged by 19 other teams, Gil’s team of Bob Haise, Bill Owens and Mike
Haise and Tim’s team of Ryan DeMeulenaere, Jack Redman and Tom Spanos
both shot rounds of 60 but after a scorecard play off Gil’s team came out the
ultimate winner at Sycamore Hills.
As Co-Chairman of this annual event, along with Ted Eikhoff, I would like to
thank all of the players, car sponsors, tee sponsors and volunteers for their commitment to the Club and their support of the Golf Outing. This year we had 82
golfers a 15% increase over last years event.
With a reduction in operating costs and many generous players and sponsors,
the event again raised over $9,000 to support the Crisis Club and the needy
people we support.
Please keep the Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outing on your calendar in August 6,
2012.
Sincerely,
Steve Graus and Ted Eikhoff, Co-Chairmen

Membership Drive 2011
By Gerrit DeMeulenaere, Membership Chairman
The 2011 Crisis Club membership drive continues as we head
into the fall season.
Our goal is to add at least twenty-five (25) new members to
our roster this year. We had a great start at the beginning of the
year by adding ten (10) new members at Spring Sports Night
however, the summer months were a little disappointing as we
only added a few more. As we head into the fall season, I am
hoping that we will be able to receive some applications at the
upcoming September 30th Comedy Night. I would encourage
members to promote membership to family members, friends
and business associates we all have. It will take an effort from
all of our members to achieve our goal. So please get involved
in the Crisis Club by not only promoting our fundraising events
but also by recruiting new members.
