CONTENTS Since its inception in 1974, Greenwillow Books has been publishing books for children of every age. We hope that at the heart of each book there is honesty, emotion, and depth— conveyed by an author or an artist who has something that is worth saying to children and who says it in a way that is worth reading. Lin faces numerous obstacles—and one very mysterious and magical witch—but ultimately is reunited with her beloved dragon, and all ends happily. What makes this book irresistible? Christoph Niemann’s clean and elegant illustrations not only tell a dynamic story, but they seamlessly introduce young children to basic Chinese characters. Cat & Mouse Written and illustrated in full color by IAN SCHOENHERR Despite their places on the food chain, Ian Schoenherr’s Cat and Mouse are the very best of friends. But their friendship doesn’t stop them from enjoying an oldfashioned, rip-roaring, page-turning game of cat and mouse on a regular basis. Mouse taunts Cat. Cat chases Mouse. Mouse tricks Cat. Cat finesses Mouse. It’s all in good fun, and by the time the chase is over—and the friends are snacking and napping together happily— preschoolers will be demanding, “Read it again!” Marrying a text of fractured nursery rhymes (such as Hickory, Dickory, Dock and I Love Little Kitty) with paintings full of sly personality and splendid airborne action, Ian Schoenherr has delivered a tour de force of a picture book. Ian Schoenherr based the cat in this book on the many cats of his childhood, as well as his current feline roommates, Buzz and Pistachio. The artist lives in Woodside, New York. The apples are crisp, the pumpkins are orange, the geese are flying south, and brightly colored leaves are falling everywhere. Finally, as the days get shorter and the nights get colder, a little yellow leaf discovers that it is the very last leaf left on the tree. The little yellow leaf does not want to let go . . . not quite yet. Even when the first frost arrives, this little yellow leaf holds on, determined. Carin Berger’s stunning cut-paper illustrations—there are literally thousands of scraps of newsprint, catalogs, and ephemera assembled on these pages—tell a perennial and powerful story of courage, friendship, and the rewards of embracing change, while introducing the fall season to the elementary school set. Boycott Blues How Rosa Parks Inspired a Nation By A N D R E A D A V I S P I N K N E Y Illustrated in full color by BRIAN PINKNEY Child, child. You have not known weary till you have walked in my shoes. In December of 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus to a white man. In the days that followed—three hundred and eighty-two days, to be exact—many people in Montgomery walked rather than take city transportation. The Montgomery bus boycott resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down segregation laws. Andrea Davis Pinkney’s eloquent and rhythmic text focuses on the human elements of the boycott—the struggle to keep walking as the seasons changed, the gathering numbers, and the determination of the boycotters—while Brian Pinkney’s impressionistic scratchboard illustrations breathe memorable life into Jim Crow, the crowded city streets, and a lone hound dog singing the unforgettable boycott blues. Includes a note from the author. Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney have previously collaborated on the multiple-award-winning picture books Alvin Ailey, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. The summer I turned eleven, my daddy, Earl Leon Wisher, took a gun and robbed the Henderson County Bank in Millersburg, Indiana. He did it in broad daylight with his older brother, Warren, and from what I heard, they never even bothered to disguise themselves. All they did was tie checkered bandannas over their mouths, so of course they were recognized right off. “Morons.” That’s what Mama said the day we heard the news. “Dumb as doorknobs—both of them.” I didn’t say anything at the time, but I figured Daddy wasn’t as dumb as she claimed, because word had it he and Uncle Warren tore out of Millersburg that day with more than ten thousand dollars. And nobody had a clue where they ran off to, either. Nobody except me, that is . . . There’s a new girl in town! Tracking Daddy Down By M A R Y B E T H K E L S E Y When Billie Wisher’s daddy robs a bank in the next town over and goes into hiding, Billie sets out to track him down. After all, despite his shortcomings (and the fact that she is probably better off with Mama and her new stepdad), Billie has always loved him, and she always will. Problem is, in Myron, Indiana, everyone knows everyone else’s business, and it’s hard to stay one step ahead of the law (not to mention the neighbors) when you are just ten going on eleven. Told in an energetic, appealing, and wholly original first-person voice, this middle grade novel is suspenseful and comic by turns. Readers will be cheering for Billie Wisher . . . and maybe just a little bit for her daddies—both of them—too. Panting, she darted over to the line of trees and fell against one. She pushed her hair back off her face and leaned forward with her hands on her knees to catch her breath. It was a good thing she’d taken off that silly bra. Because that’s what she had done: at the last minute, when her mother and father were waiting in the car, she’d cried, “Hold on a second!” and run upstairs over Natalie’s protests to rip her dress off over her head and unfasten her bra. The relief had been immediate. Horrible thing’s like a tourniquet, Cecile thought as she moved her shoulders now, luxuriating in the delicious freedom of the fabric against her skin. She felt sleek and safe, hiding in the dark—an animal of speed, a spectator on the sidelines of an invisible game until she felt like joining back in. Someone plunged quietly into the trees behind her and swore. A low grunt sounded very near to where she stood, over to the right. There was the sound of heavy breathing. Then a sudden, breathless, “Polo!” Marketing Campaign ■ Book Sense White Box ARC mailing ■ Local author events (Chapel Hill, NC) ■ First Look reader review program ■ Teachers & Librarians feature at harpercollinschildrens.com and featured in BookBlast e-newsletter 20 Whit was so close, all she had to do was reach out and touch him. Then she’d be the fox. Everyone would hunt for her. What it would it feel like, to be the one the boys were hunting in the dark? To be a fox, outnumbered and surrounded? Cecile’s chest heaved and caught as a hand clamped on her wrist and a voice whispered, “Do you want to be It?” F08_GW_f 3/30/08 11:22 AM Page 21 MIDDLE GRADE FICTION Memorable literary fiction for girls—compare to Olive’s Ocean and Criss Cross The Lucky Ones By S T E P H A N I E G R E E N E When did Natalie stop caring about the hermit crabs under the dock and start caring about the boys at the club? That’s what Cecile wants to know. For Cecile, vacation at Granddad’s house has always been about swimming, playing statue on the dock pilings, and hiding in the lilac bush fort with her brothers and sisters. But this summer—with Natalie more interested in perfecting her tan and sneaking kisses with William in his car—Cecile is pretty much on her own. Now only Thomas Ward is left. He’s the last hope; the last apprentice There was a witch on the path, lying on her back, one hand trailing in the water. Her eyes and mouth were wide open: the former were fixed and staring but looking up at the sky, not toward me; the mouth showed the four long, sharp canines of a water witch. Was it the one who’d escaped from the pit under the mill? Was she hurt—or dead? I hesitated. I was very close to her now. What if she was only pretending? Just waiting until I got close enough for her to grab hold of me? And then a voice spoke to me out of the darkness, one that I recognized only too well. “Well, child, we meet again!” My knees turned to water. Beyond the body, facing me, was Grimalkin. I am about to jump. Feet, knees, hip, back, roll. I am about to jump wearing a full load on my back. Feet, knees, hip, back, roll. Crammed tightly, the pack is stuffed with my anxieties, fears—and the army-issued parachute. Strapped to me, it is secured to my chest with strings and clasps. It holds my heart in place, should it try to break free. When the time is right, I will yank the cord. At that moment, the pack will open. My fears will rise to the dome of my chute, where they will hover. And for a moment, I will be free of them. Feet, knees, hip, back, roll. I have been trained to react without thinking. When Elaine Hamilton was six years old, she told her mother she wanted to be a cook when she grew up. At the time, her mother was trying to pass legislation toward equal pay for women. Elaine never forgot her mother’s words. “Oh, Elaine,” she had said, hurriedly stuffing papers into her briefcase. “Can’t you aspire to something higher? Twenty years since liberation and you want to stay home and slave over a burner?” Elaine went into her bedroom, took out a sheet of paper and a pencil, and wrote a letter to her favorite person in the entire world: Julia Child. dear Julia, When I grow up I want to be a cook like you. Yesterday I made a sauce hollondaze from your rec—ressup— cookbook but I couldn’t find a wisp of steam like you said and I think the yolks got to hot. The sauce sepuraded and I was going to throw it out but Dad said Elaine this is delishus. But this was the funny thing: Elaine was much too shy a child to actually send this letter, or any letter she wrote over the years to her favorite person in the entire world. Instead she locked them inside an old wooden chest with brass handles at the foot of her bed, and she never spoke again of her dream to become a cook. 3/30/08 11:22 AM Page 27 TEEN For fans of funny fiction—and the Food Network Dear Julia By A M Y B R O N W E N Z E M S E R Sixteen-year-old Elaine Hamilton has a dream. She wants to be a chef. And ever since she was six, Elaine has been writing letters seeking advice on recipes, ingredients, and methods from her heroine, Julia Child. She never mails the letters— she’s much too shy for that . . . in fact, she can barely utter a word in public—but she saves them all in a locked box at the foot of her bed. Enter Lucida Sans. Initially, Lucida doesn’t see the gourmet meals Elaine unpacks for herself in the cafeteria. Initially, all Lucida sees is Croton Harmon, the incredibly handsome and vindictive classmate who is her weakness. As it turns out, however, Elaine’s divine talent and Lucida’s star-crossed romance intersect in a totally unexpected and hilarious way. Amy Zemser’s laugh-out-loud funny novel combines cross-dressing, yoga, a cable-access cooking competition, impossible dreams, politics, omelets, sibling high jinks, rapid-fire dialogue, and breaking and entering with—if you can believe it— French food and friendship. Since 1919, educators, librarians, booksellers, and families have celebrated Children’s Book Week during the week before Thanksgiving. However, teachers, librarians and booksellers asked us to move this national celebration to a time when more kids could be actively engaged. For the 89th annual observance, Children’s Book Week will be May 12–18, 2008. Special materials available from the Children’s Book Council were created by some of today’s hottest children’s book stars. Use these posters, bookmarks, and other items to decorate your walls, promote your events, and, most importantly, encourage kids to read. Be sure to visit the Children’s Book Council’s website at www.cbcbooks.org for more information, ideas, and materials for Children’s Book Week 2008. Greenwillow Books is a member of the Children’s Book Council (CBC), a nonprofit trade organization that encourages the use and enjoyment of books and related literacy materials for young people. Our books from the current and immediately preceding year are available for examination at the CBC Library, 12 West 37th Street, New York, NY 10018. The library is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 40 Children’s Book Council
