2014 Annual Report - Greenburgh Nature Center
Greenburgh Nature Center
Annual Report 2014
1
GREETINGS & GRATITUDE
Dear Friends,
This past year, the Greenburgh Nature Center continued to explore new avenues of opportunity and growth, and we wish to
thank all of our members, donors, visitors, and community partners for their encouragement and support throughout 2014.
A highlight of the year was the design and development of our Native Plant Meadow, which served as an inspiring and
breathtaking backdrop for our annual Butterfly Exhibit. Guests who attended our June Farm to Table event enjoyed an intimate
tour of the meadow and wandered its meandering paths.
In 2014, the Greenburgh Nature Center hosted many weekday and weekend programs, guided trail walks, evening speakers,
and seasonal events that increased community interest and participation. We expanded our school programs and municipality
partnerships, with a focus on the important message to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
We encourage our visitors to connect and re-connect with nature and our outdoor space including the Native Plant Meadow,
Nature’s Playground, barnyard animal exhibit, birds of prey aviary, and trail walks.
Volunteer opportunities for students, adults, and corporations provide a hands-on experience that is vital for our understanding
of the environment and the roles we fulfill as responsible citizens, locally and globally.
We value our community ties and, as always, we encourage you to reach out to us with your ideas and suggestions.
The Greenburgh Nature Center would like to recognize the Town of Greenburgh for their generous support of our mission
and, with a final note, may we extend our warmest gratitude to our members and supporters.
Sincerely,
Margaret Tjimos Goldberg

PROGRAMS, EVENTS, AND EXHIBITS
PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS AND GROUPS
Our programs provided knowledge and opportunities to learn first-hand about
nature and the environment. Through our 800+ school programs in 2014, we
demonstrated that environmental education is an important part of lifelong learning.
Understanding the environment in which we live, work, and play is vital to making
informed decisions that affect us on both an individual and a community level. In
this past year, we expanded and strengthened relationships with our surrounding
community. One example was providing the students at Richard J. Bailey School
with custom, hands-on, place-based programs that were specific to their school
campus. These programs were made possible by a generous grant from the St.
Faith’s Foundation.
At the Nature Center, we also developed an outdoor classroom that is located in the
newly restored Native Plant Meadow. This is an exciting location where students can
learn, but also an equally relaxing spot for anyone to sit, observe wildlife, or just be
in awe about the wonders of nature.
FAMILY, ADULT, AND EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS
The GNC presented programming almost every weekend throughout 2014. From
large-scale community events to smaller programs including Gem Hunts and Family
Campouts, we offered a multitude of weekend and family programs throughout
the year that were fun and informative for visitors and members of all ages.
Adult programs covered diverse topics including lively and engaging films and
discussions, focusing on regional and global effects of climate change. In addition to
stretching our minds, we also stretched our bodies during outside yoga and fitness
classes that were held on the Nature Center’s serene grounds. Our weekday early
childhood programs for preschoolers and their parents or caregivers included a mix
of nature fun, crafts, stories, and animal presentations, and was expanded to include
art classes.
4
PROGRAMS, EVENTS, AND EXHIBITS
EARLY CHILDHOOD CAMPS
In 2014, in addition to our regularly scheduled school holiday and summer camps,
we established a relationship with Sarah Lawrence College’s Early Childhood
Center. Children ages 3-5 were entertained with animal antics, taught special
animal care and keeping, and did hands-on environmental education in limited
one-week sessions. The GNC has been expanding our relationships with local
nursery schools in Westchester County to offer camps during their school breaks.
SPECIAL EVENTS AND EXHIBITS
We continued to present our popular special seasonal events throughout 2014,
including our Maple Sugaring Party, Spring Celebration and Egg Hunts, Earth Day,
Harvest Party, Fall Festival, and Scarecrows and Pumpkins Parade.
From late June through early August, we presented our annual Walk Among Live
Butterflies, a favorite exhibit among visitors who were delighted to enjoy upclose encounters with native butterfly species. The exhibit was again located in
our new meadow area, in a hoop house that was almost twice the size of last
year’s exhibit, providing butterflies and visitors an enhanced interaction with
nature.
Another warm weather offering was Story Walk, which kicked off at the end of June
and ran through September. Story Walk is a self-guided reading tour designed to
entice visitors to explore our forest. This year’s literary offering was the delightful
children’s book, Opossum at Sycamore Road, written by Sally M. Walker.
In 2014, we hosted a photography exhibit by Jose L. Limbaga, Avian Treasures at
the Greenburgh Nature Center, which highlighted the variety of birds that can
be viewed on the Center’s grounds.

MUSEUM AND ANIMAL COLLECTION
MUSEUM AND ANIMAL COLLECTION
In 2014, the newly constructed chicken coop in the barnyard area saw the
addition of fifteen new chick residents. This was a great addition to our outdoor
animal collection, quickly becoming a favorite with our students, visitors of all
ages, and especially our summer campers. The level of interest and activity in
the barnyard area was immediately increased and became a focal point in our
outdoor exhibits. The chicken coop was made possible by generous donations
from a few members.
6
ADULT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
1 CAMERA, 2 HOURS, HOW
MANY PLASTIC BAGS?
SPECIAL EXHIBIT
The GNC engaged high school
students from all over Westchester
County to study the effects of singleuse plastic bags on the environment
in our “1 Camera 2 Hours How Many
Plastic Bags?” Documentary Art
Exhibit. Students were challenged to
go out into their communities with a
camera to document plastic bag litter
they could find in just two hours, and
turn the photos into art. The resulting
exhibit, which opened in March 2014,
was a powerful reminder that the little
things we do every day have impact.
Portions of the exhibit were on
display in several local communities
throughout the year.
ADULT PROGRAMS
The GNC hosted 12 environmental programs this past year, all free and open to the public, in partnership with the Sierra
Club Lower Hudson Group. The program topics were varied and included “Garbage to Gold: Reclaiming the Value of Food
Waste;” “Global Impacts of the Food We Eat;” and “Toxic Exposures in the Home.” In addition, hands-on demonstration
workshops on backyard composting were held in the spring, summer, and fall.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES
In 2014, the regional economic need for education about cost-effective organic waste management and composting
increased demand for the GNC’s expertise in teaching leaf mulching and food waste composting to homeowners,
commercial enterprises, landscapers, school districts, and municipalities. The GNC was awarded contracts by the City of
New Rochelle and the Village of Scarsdale to assist in municipal leaf mulching education campaigns.
As a result of a meeting held at the GNC in early 2014, the Westchester School Recycling & Composting Alliance (WSRCA)
was created. This group serves as a vehicle for ongoing resource sharing as schools throughout Westchester County
address the pressing need to align school operations with state and local recycling regulations. The alliance also ensures
that students in our region learn and practice essential waste reduction and recycling behaviors on a daily basis.
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE GNC
Through the generosity of donors, the GNC acquired new outdoor recycling stations that enable visiting classes and the
public to properly separate paper, co-mingled recyclables, and food waste for composting from trash. The four bin stations
make recycling educational, fun, and easy for all ages.
GNC staff and volunteers have re-designed our composting systems so that all organic waste generated on site is composted
in aerobic static piles. Oxygen-loving bacteria heats the piles up to 140 degrees, ideal temperatures for ensuring quick and
complete breakdown into healthy compost. Working with our vendors, the GNC has also significantly reduced waste at all
of our programs and events, as we aim toward zero waste and sustainability in our operations.
7
CAPITAL PROJECTS
ORCHARD/MEADOW RESTORATION
The restoration of the former orchard area of the property moved ahead in
2014. This project started in 2013, when Cathy Ludden and Eric Rothenberg
became major benefactors of the meadow project and we were able to move
ahead with the restoration. Bill Boyce, Owner & Principal Landscape Architect of
Biosphere, helped us begin the area’s transition into a meadow and populated
the area with newly planted native species. This past year saw the addition of
two outdoor teaching locations, “stone-henge” and “tree-henge,” both of which
were constructed with repurposed natural elements. In addition to the teaching
areas, we also added hundreds of new native wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs.
Over the past couple of years, the meadow has become the home for our annual
butterfly exhibit and a more focal part of our educational programming and
general visitation.
RAIN GARDEN
A grant from Volunteer New York! provided the funds to create a Rain Garden
adjoining to our Great Lawn. It was installed in September 2014 in an area that
has historically flooded from heavy rains.
The purpose of the rain garden is to collect and filter rainwater and stormwater
runoff. The combination of soil and native plants allows for both the rapid
absorption of stormwater and the efficient filtering of pollutants. In addition to
alleviating flooding on the lawn and keeping unfiltered water from emptying into
the Bronx River (the ultimate destination for stormwater runoff), this project
lends itself to an educational component, which is a positive enhancement to our
sustainability curriculum.
8
VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEER SUPPORT
In 2014, our volunteer program maintained an active core of 60 individuals and six groups. In addition, we had three groups
and numerous individuals who volunteered for specific projects or a limited time period. In total, we had 192 volunteers
which included 28 adult volunteers, 16 college-age volunteers, 75 high school volunteers, 8 junior volunteers (13 and under),
and 65 special event volunteers who, in total, donated 9,205 hours of their time and talent to the Nature Center.
Their contributions were in various areas:
• Administrative (6% of volunteer hours)
• Gardens and grounds (13% of volunteer hours)
• Animal museum (67% of volunteer hours)
• Sustainability (3% of volunteer hours)
• Special events and programming (11% of volunteer hours)
High school age volunteers (ages 14 - 18) contributed the majority of all volunteer hours, at 62%, followed by 25% of hours
by adults ages 23 and older, 9% by college-age volunteers (ages 19 - 22), and 4% of volunteer hours by people under 14
years of age.
9
SUPPORT
FUNDRAISING
The Nature Center continued to host two large-scale fundraisers this past year, each
one reaching higher levels of support from sponsors and guests than in previous
years.
In June, the 2nd annual Farm to Table dinner and wine tasting fundraiser was held
under a tent on our Great Lawn and guests were asked to bring their own dinnerware
in an effort to help the GNC make this a zero waste event. Many local restaurants,
bakeries, and wineries participated to support the GNC and to help raise awareness
of eating locally sourced foods. Highlights included music by an Edgemont High
School band, a sneak peak at our annual butterfly exhibit, and a walk through our
newly renovated meadow.
The Nature Center also held its 2nd Annual Golf Outing and Reception in
September at the Scarsdale Golf Club and the event raised more than $60,000.
Golfers had a picture-perfect day competing in contests and a round of golf.
Afterwards, golfers and gala only guests enjoyed the evening dinner reception,
including a raffle and silent auction. Music was supplied by Carrie Feiner. The emcee
for the evening was Westchester resident and Greenburgh Nature Center member,
Lisa Salvadorini, the morning Anchor and Managing Editor at News 12 Westchester.
The event created new business partners, strengthened relationships with current
sponsors, and offered another way to connect with our donors.
SUPPORT
The Nature Center continued to have a broad-based support system which included
government funding from the Town of Greenburgh, Westchester County, and
New York State; private funding from individual contributions and membership
dues; corporate funding, including corporate and foundation grants, matching gift
10
programs, business sponsorships, and in-kind donations; and grounds and building maintenance support from the Town of
Greenburgh. The Town of Greenburgh increased their commitment to the GNC and provided important support services to help
improve the appearance of the Center.
Continued financial support from the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation allowed the
Nature Center to conduct nature education programs at a discounted rate for at-risk Westchester school children and also helped
to underwrite community weekend events and environmental forums for adults.
Funding from New York State included $41,835 as part of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens and Aquarium (ZBGA)
program supported the ongoing care of the Center’s living collections as well as allowed us to develop educational, cultural,
and recreational programs that interpret New York State’s natural heritage.
Con Edison renewed their generous $20,000 grant which supported the Nature Center’s expansion of the high school
volunteer led Teaching Trails program. Through a $10,000 grant from St. Faith’s House Foundation, the Center launched placebased educational programming for 4th-6th graders at the Bailey School in Greenburgh, encouraging students to become
environmental stewards in their school community and beyond. Funding from TD Charitable Foundation supported our
weekend community events. Additional foundation funding from Au Pair in America, the Bronx River Parkway Reservation
Conservancy, the Geraldine Stutz Trust, Ruth & Seymour Klein Foundation, the Rotary Club of Hartsdale, and the Rotary
Club of Scarsdale supported ongoing environmental education programming.
Many local businesses and corporations participated in our larger community events via corporate and foundation grants,
business sponsorships, and in-kind contributions. We were also grateful for personal donations from our growing base of
individual supporters.
Our major weekend events garnered new and continued support from local businesses through sponsorships and in-kind
donations. This year’s sponsors included Bartlett Trees, Billy Beez, California Pizza Kitchen, Carlos Serrano Photography, Central
Animal Hospital, The Coca-Cola Company, Con Edison, Dilmaghani Corporation, Elmwood Day Camp, Fairview Golf Center,
Geraldine Stutz Trust, Green Mountain Energy, Groundwork Hudson Valley, Gymboree Play & Music, Houlihan Lawrence
(Scarsdale), Hurricane Grill & Wings, Jake’s Wayback Burgers, Macaroni Kid, Mathnasium, NEA Federal Credit Union,
New York Life, SavATree, ShopRite (Scarsdale), Snip-Its (Scarsdale), Suburban Carting Co., TD Bank, Venture Portraits,
Westchester Greenhouses & Farm, Westchester Magazine, Westchester Parent Magazine, WFAS, WHUD, and Whole Foods
Market Westchester.
MEMBERSHIP
In 2014, we continued our efforts to engage members by offering free monthly events and larger member discounts at all of
our weekend programming. Our membership numbers remained steady at slightly over 1,000. In total, over 40% of our 2014
memberships came from Greenburgh residents, with the remainder coming primarily from other Westchester County locales.
Our various membership categories helped to engage visitors and encourage a variety of membership levels. Over 80% of our
memberships were Family Memberships (two adults with their children), and another 13% included grandparents with their
grandchildren.
SPREADING THE WORD
In 2014, we saw a steady increase in our relationship with the media. By participating in #GivingTuesday, a global non-profit
movement, we both raised awareness and increased our online followers. In addition, we were featured on several local
television channels and reached numerous members of the community by guest appearances on radio stations.
Through the distribution of free family passes and kid passes to our seasonal community events and fundraisers, we gained
community goodwill and increased our visibility. These were distributed through various media channels, by our sponsors, and
at off -site events. By combining digital and print marketing strategies, we spread the GNC name in notable local media, including
Westchester Magazine, Westchester Parent Magazine, Westchester Family Magazine, the Scarsdale Inquirer, and the Journal
News as well as on-air via WFAS, WHUD, and News 12 Westchester.
In order to continue our efforts to reach a wider audience, we encouraged all visitors, guests, members, and sponsors to like us
on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, and subscribe to our email list. In this way, we established multiple methods for
our followers to stay in touch with the GNC and provided them with the most up-to-date news from the Nature Center.
