On 6th February 2012, our school had the privilege of welcoming Roddy Doyle, the Irish author of several outstanding books, such as The Commitments, The Van to our
school. He read a chapter of one of his books, A Greyhound of a Girl, to the students who listened intently.
After he read to us, we were given time to ask him some
questions about his life, his books etc. Everyone was intrigued with what he had to say. He gave very detailed answers, which helped us to get an insight into his writings.
Prior to his visit, Junior and Senior cycle students had participated in a writing competition. This allowed the pupils
from the ages of 12 to 19 to showcase their talents.
5th Year: Leanne O’Brien;
6th Year: Amy Dunne and Nicole Mockler.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and
Roddy Doyle appeared to have enjoyed
himself as much as us.

Following the workshop the winners of the competition

himself.

Our trip to the Guinness Storehouse was an excellent experience. First of all, in the morning,
we had mock interviews by staff.
Everybody was nervous but we
got great feedback afterwards.
Paul brought us on a tour of the
Storehouse. We went through
every floor (all 7 floors). This
was so interesting and so much
fun. Everybody had a fantastic
time and learned a lot from the
day.
The Sam Maguire visits us.
On Friday 3rd February,
eight TY students were
chosen to participate in a
Near FM broadcast.
They discussed the interaction of teenagers with
the EU and if young people felt the EU impacts their
everyday lives. Much research was carried out before the
broadcast and the students got a great insight into various EU policies. They also took this time to analyse their
own views on EU citizenship. It was a very worthwhile
activity.

ExtraCurricular Sporting Activities.
In the second term we introducted Gaelic Football to the school as an after school activity.
Vinny the local G.A.A. development officer whom many of the students know from coaching
in the local area and the primary schools now takes Gaelic Football training on a Tuesday
after school for an hour. We hope to continue this from September next year and welcome
anyone who wishes to play.
Football Tournaments.
First Year Futsal Tournament.
The first year indoor football tournament was held on Thursday the 8th of March. The day
was a great success with huge participaiton in the event, lots of goals and a great competitive
atmosphere. Each team represented a nationality from the year group, and completed a
project on that particular nationality. All projects were displayed and well presented on the
day.
U 15’s Futsal Tournament.
Twenty one students travelled away to St. Micheal’s in Finglas on Friday, March 9th. Two
Teams represented the school on the day. Team Mercy B, competed very well, winning
various matchs throughout the day, and Team Mercy A did the school very proud by getting
through to the final against Team Holy Faith A. Team Mercy A drew the final and with
victory close at hand, a last minute penalty competition finally decided the winners and saw
Mercy A as runners up on the day. Very well done to all students who competed on the day.

2.1 CSPE News Report.
We invited in a speaker from
the DSPCA to speak about animal rights and welfare as part of
our stewardship concept section. Ms Gillian Bird and her
dog Beckam gave us a good
understand of the likes of animals and how they should be
treated. We all had our own
jobs to do for this project and
we are very proud of our work.
We enjoyed this project.

participating in these activities sometimes saw
as many as two thirds of the school population
being involved in activity over the course of a
