Part of that work is the budget, which has been in full swing for several weeks. I assure you that your committee chairs, management team and I are determined to present to the budget committee the tightest budget possible without sacrificing any services or the quality of life you’ve come to expect at your Club. In addition to the budget, I am working closely with all of the department heads on better ways to serve you in each department including the development of new restaurant ideas and menu items for all of our dining venues! It’s not too early to plan your social calendar for next season. The deadline to order discounted tickets for shows at FAU next season is July 1. Don’t miss out on this exclusive offer for Boca West members. The 2010/2011 Entertainment Lineup is located on page 22. Once again I want to offer my sincerest appreciation to the Board of Governors and you for allowing me to host the Seminole Region Club Managers 20th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on June 13 and 14, 2010. Even people who are intimidated by weight rooms and sports usually have no problem putting on a pair of comfortable and supportive shoes and going for a walk. Research shows that walking bestows many health benefits. Walking helps to prevent high blood pressure, and it can help people get mild to moderately high blood pressure under control. Walking raises the good HDL cholesterol that helps to prevent heart disease. People who walk regularly have lower risks of type II diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Walking also helps people to control their weight and to lose weight. Following are some ideas for getting the most out of a walking program. Be sure you are in good health, and avoid injury. Check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. The best way to avoid injury is to start slowly and progress gradually. Reduce your walking time if you feel any pain in your joints. Walk Regularly. Regular exercise confers more health benefits and is less likely to lead to injury. If you are starting a walking program, estimate how much time you are walking now and gradually add more time. Add a few more minutes per session each week, as you get stronger. Try to walk at least 3 times a week. Walking is something that could be done every day if you wanted. Step up the pace. It may take several months before your legs are really accustomed to your new mileage. Once the walking becomes easier, use the following suggestions to increase your walking intensity to reap even more health and fitness benefits from your workouts: Walking: Take Steps to Good Health Increase your pace by walking faster, not by increasing the length of your stride. Use your arms. Bend your elbows and pump your arms as you walk. Find some hills. Walking up hill provides an aerobic challenge If you are walking on a treadmill, increase the grade. Walk tall and strong, everything should be done with good posture. Be aware of this as you are walking. Is your head over the top of your shoulders? Are your shoulders over the top of your hips? Are your hips over the top of your ankles, probably not. It is very likely the head is in front of the shoulders and the shoulders are in front of the hips. In time this is what creates muscle imbalance and eventually, injuries. The chin should be tucked, shoulder blades squeezed, chest lifted and abs zipped up and in. Have fun. Do everything you can to make your walk enjoyable. Try walking with a friend, what ever it takes to motivate you and get you moving towards better health. boca west [ June/July 2010 ] 5 Aerobics f i t n ess & aquat ics ] monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Super Sculpt 7:30 a.m. Amie Pilates 7:30 a.m. Julie Total Body Sculpt 7:30 a.m. Jason / Nadine C Super Sculpt 7:30 a.m. Colleen Super Sculpt 7:30 a.m. Pam S. For those of you who will remain at Boca West during the summer months we will be here to extend physical therapy services to you; for those who travel from the south Florida area we’ll look forward to seeing you again in the fall. I would take a brief opportunity to provide a little inside information on our therapists that you might find interesting: Dana Van Pelt - Dana is originally from Ithaca, New York. He graduated from Ithaca College, Stony Brook University, Nova Southeastern University, and will complete his clinical doctorate this summer from Temple University. He started his private practice of outpatient physical therapy in 1980. Dana is both a physical therapist and athletic trainer. He and his wife Karen have two children, Brad and Erinn Van Pelt, as well as Diesel and Astro, their favorite German Shepherds. Taryn Chlebisch, Clinical Director at Boca West Taryn completed her undergraduate and graduate coursework at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She began by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in rehabilitation science in 2003, and then proceeded to earn her Doctorate in Physical Therapy just two years later in 2005. She has experience in the areas of sports orthopedics, pediatric neurological rehab, acute care and chronic orthopedics. These settings gave Taryn a very diverse list of skills that make her a great fit at our Boca West Location. Aside from her academic experience, Taryn has clinical experience in aquatic therapy. This experience has translated into the development of a full scale aquatics program at our east Boca location. This program offers our patients the ability to begin treatment sooner than traditional landbased therapies and offer a much more low-impact atmosphere. Taryn has been an integral part of the development of our aquatics program and is a resident expert in the techniques of aquatic therapy. Dana Van Pelt Taryn Chlebisch Jackie Burton Randy Kreuzer Laura Higgins Jackie Burton - Jackie was raised in Dayton, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree. She worked for Dole Fresh Fruit Company as a Manager of Sales Analysis and Administration. When the Dole Corporation relocated to California Jackie returned to school and earned a Masters of Physical Therapy at Nova Southeastern University. She worked with Bethesda Memorial Hospital for twelve years as a physical therapist and supervisor for outpatient physical therapy. She has experience with orthopedic/sports injuries, cancer rebound patients, movement disorders, the diabetic association, as well as vestibular rehabilitation. Randy Kreuzer - Randy is originally from the Cleveland, Ohio area and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the Ohio State University. After living in New York City for six years he returned to school to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Randy spends time in both locations of the Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine, at the Boca West and FAU offices, working with patients of all ages. In his spare time his hobbies include fitness, travel, as well as a musical interest in playing the guitar and drums. Laura Higgins - Laura was born and raised in Chapel Hill, NC and attended UNC-Chapel Hill where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology/chemistry. She began training as a ballet dancer at an early age with members of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association and continued this interest during her time at UNC. Laura moved to Fort Lauderdale to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Nova Southeastern University. Her training in traditional and contemporary Pilates as a rehabilitation specialist has helped Laura incorporate these methods into her assessment and treatment regime at the Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine. From all of us at the Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine, thank you for your patronage. Dana Van Pelt, PT, ATC, MBA - President and Founder boca west [ June/July 2010 ] 7 the [ spa ] at boca west Why is it important to use sunscreen? By Silvia Parada Spa Coordinator Always apply sunscreen 10 to 20 minutes before exposure to the sun and continue to re-apply throughout the day. Women should wear sunscreen under make-up (including makeup that already contains a sunscreen). Sunscreen should be worn daily, even if you do not plan on being exposed to the sun. You can also be exposed to these harmful rays while driving in your car. UVA rays are even present on cloudy days and winter days. While there is so much information on the news and in magazines about the importance of sunscreens, many people still know very little about the proper use of sunscreens. A sunburn is caused by exposing your skin to too much ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Sun damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, whether sunburn occurs or not. In addition to sunburn, other sun damaging effects can include wrinkling, pre-mature aging, and in time, an almost leathery appearance of the skin. Today, skin cancer has become the most severe problem related to sun exposure. It is important to remember that sunscreens are not all the same. Your sunscreen must have both UVA and UVB protection, which are the two major types of ultraviolet (UV) sun damage. Sunscreens are measured by SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor. For example, if it normally takes you a half hour to sunburn and your sunscreen had a SPF rating of 15, then it would take you 15 times longer (or 7.5 hours) to get sunburned. For more information, 8 [ June/July 2010 ] boca west Remember that the sun’s rays are the strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. especially during the late spring and summer. To protect yourself, the best advice is to apply sunscreen daily, wear protective clothing, and wear a hat to protect your head and face when you are outdoors. The Spa Boutique is now offereing Skin Defender Protection Emulsion SPF30. This product contains advanced protection against UV rays, coupled with an innovative anti-oxidant complex resistant to pollution. This protective emulsion also fortifies the skin against environmental aging. ple ase call t he Sp a at 488-7880. S p a S p e c i a l s June Spa Special Treat yourself. Be sure and support your club’s restaurants this summer. A Greener Boca West Country Club We have begun to implement recycling at Boca West Country Club. I have spent many hours trying to figure the best way to clearly explain our financial status to you. Many of you have suggested that I not get into the nitty-gritty details, as that is my job along with management and your Board of Governors. What you have asked me to address are your Concerns and to give you Confidence in your clubs financial status. In addressing your Concerns first, let me assure you that despite the worst weather conditions this season over those of the past, we remain financially healthy. For the first six months of our fiscal year, we are doing better than plan by approximately $800,000 for three main reasons. First and foremost is the fact that only 54 members have not paid any of their dues so far this year, which includes 22 from last year. In addition, we only have 10 members still making partial payments, and we have recovered almost $60,000 of previously written off monies recouped from members who sold their homes this year. What does this all mean? Well, this year’s budget anticipated 150 nonpaying members. For the current fiscal year this favorable variance represents approximately $555,000 or about 69% of the $800,000 that we are currently ahead of budget. This excess, which will amount to about $900,000 by year end, will hopefully not be needed to offset any operational shortages and therefore will allow us to create some needed reserves on our balance sheet. If we solely look at our recurring operations against budget, we are approximately $245,000 better than plan due to two other key success stories, which if not for them, our picture would not look so good. The first is something that we can all take credit for – it is obvious we appreciate our state-of-the-art fitness center and spa facility and it is even more obvious that we love to be pampered; spa and fitness revenue are exceeding plan by $63,000 year-to-date. In addition, thanks to the creative, inspired leadership of Ed (“retail is my life”) 28 [ June/July 2010 ] boca west Moskowitz and our Retail professionals, led by Emily and Mike, our retail gross profits are exceeding plan by almost $50,000. Our third and final main reason we have weathered the storm (no pun intended), is directly attributable to the management of this Club and their ability to quickly adjust to adverse situations. By staggering the starting and ending employment periods of our seasonal help and by recognizing early on the need to close and consolidate our restaurants, we have been able to reduce our labor costs by over $350,000 from plan. These two main successes are the key reason why we have been able to overcome this year’s adverse weather. Did you know that through March we lost over 11,000 scheduled golf rounds? That equates to approximately $250,000 of lost revenue from green fees and cart fees alone. And as you would expect, in addition to lost golf rounds, our Food and Beverage gross profit was also adversely effected by the weather. You can never make up these losses, so thank you Spa, Fitness, Retail and Management. So when you look at the total picture and balance everything out, you should feel very Comfortable and Confident that Boca West remains financially healthy. Now I would like to take just a few more minutes to address questions many of you have raised regarding our debt level and our obligation to repay these funds in a timely manner. In building our latest expansion, we borrowed monies from our membership reserves that had been accumulated over the years as well as $18 million dollars from the Bank. The bank loan is a revolver, which allows us to use our positive cash flow from our dues to be out of the bank for several months during the year. As the fiscal year progresses, we begin to re-borrow once again up to the maximum ceiling of $18 million. As of the end of March, we had borrowed $8 million, and we anticipate continuing to borrow up to the ceiling until next year’s dues start to come in. Beginning October 1, 2011 and for 7 years thereafter, we are required to annually pay down this bank debt by $2,250,000 using initiation fees from sales of units. This anticipates having about 55 annual home sales to new members. In addition, we need 10 mandatory membership home sales each year to be able to replenish the Membership Reserves that were borrowed for this expansion. While we still anticipate that we will reach these sales numbers, the worst that can happen is that it will take a year or two longer to replenish our Membership Reserves, which to me is no big deal as we are just paying ourselves back at that point. In addition, to further relieve any concerns about our ability to address this debt repayment obligation, you should be aware that Jay and your Board of Governors froze the expenditure of any large capital needs this current fiscal year. In our operating budget each year is approximately $2 million of depreciation expense. Normally this noncash expenditure is used each year as the source for making any large capital expenditures. However, by not making any this past year, we will have set aside these monies to further ensure our ability to satisfy our bank obligation. In conclusion, I trust that I have addressed your Concerns and have given you the Confidence to walk away from today’s meeting knowing that Boca West remains financially healthy. Sunshine Committee Your friends and neighbors at Boca West would appreciate knowing important happenings. Please call 488-7819 with a detailed message about illness, death, milestone birthdays or anniversaries. This line is open 24 hours a day. Jay DiPietro has a group of employees who have been working for him for many years and are a very integral part of the success of our club. Most of you probably don’t know who some of them are, so let me take you behind the scenes. This month I’d like to introduce you to Darlene Wright who is the Executive Assistant to JD our General Manager and President. She is in charge of the executive office personnel. She takes the minutes at our monthly Board meetings as well as coordinates the details of the Annual Meetings, the Board elections and any Special Meetings of the Members that may be called. She is a tremendous aid to all of us on the Board making sure that correspondence with you is taken care of and also overseeing the execution of all Committee meeting minutes. Darlene Wright Darlene plays a key role in assisting Jay with the enormous amount of details in running this 50 million dollar company called Boca West Country Club. Her office is in the executive suite where she is busy handling a multitude of responsibilities. She is definitely a multi task person who can be seen answering phone calls, e-mailing and sorting through tons of correspondence at the same time. Darlene is entering her 24th year at Boca West. She started working here as a part-time “Gal Friday” and when there was an opening for a full-time receptionist she took that position. At that time Sharon was JD’s Executive Assistant and when they began dating, Sharon made the decision to resign and she highly recommended Darlene to replace her. It’s interesting to note that Darlene has worked for every Chairman of the Board at Boca West. She is truly an encyclopedia of Boca West information. Darlene was born in Georgia. After her parents’ divorce, she and her Mom and sister lived in many states eventually settling in Florida. A few years ago Darlene married Billy Wright, who many of you know was our past Director of Golf Maintenance and Landscape. One of her loves is deep-water fishing and she also enjoys reading but playing with her two Jack Russells is her biggest passion! She is able to adapt to the different personalities of each Chairman and member of the Board of Governors and says that although there are differences each year, she found that every Board was very effective in serving our members. Darlene admits that Boca West is her family. She loves her job and enjoys the people she works with. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated employee who helps make Boca West the best. So, don’t you just love being here at Boca West? I do.
