Lots of new faces for CSI Men’s Basketball with same
goal of winning NJCAA national championship
When this year’s College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball team takes the floor there will be only one
familiar face on the court and one on the sidelines. But the goal to bring home a Scenic West Athletic Conference title, a Region 18 title and a National Junior College Athletic Association national title will remain the
same.
The Golden Eagles have qualified for the national tournament 22 times, bringing home the national championship three times. To begin that journey towards another trip and another championship, CSI will look to
returning NJCAA All American Fredrick Edmond for continuity.
Edmond, who averaged 18 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season, is the sole returning player from
last year’s team that won the SWAC championship before falling in the Region 18 Championship. The only
other remnant of last year’s squad is returning assistant coach Brock Morris. Together with new head coach
Jared Phay a new era begins. Phay is no stranger to what it takes to win in Region 18, having coached at
North Idaho College for 10 years.
“I’m excited for the new adventure here at CSI and appreciate the tremendous support I’ve received so far,”
Phay said. “I am honored to be coaching at Southern Idaho and ready to be a part of continuing the tradition
of winning at CSI.”
To do that, Phay has brought in a very talented group of players.
At the guard position, In addition to Edmond, he will look to Abdoulaye Harouna (Niger), Shaq Carr (Las
Vegas), Uchenna Iroebu (Sacramento), Alec Meyerhoeffer (Twin Falls, Ar’Mond Davis (Tacoma, Wash.),
Tyson Smith (Baltimore, Md.) and Pape Diatta (Senegal).
“We are very athletic, quick and can
really shoot it,” Phay
said. “With the depth
that we have, we
should be able to apply a lot of pressure
on opponents.”
At forward/center,
the Golden Eagles
will have Ray Kasongo (Canada),
Keonta Vernon (Tulare, Calif.), Dakota
Chambers (Paradise
Valley, Ariz.), Colton
Chambers (Paradise

Valley, Ariz.) and Austin
Winegar (Weiser).
“We have good size
inside,” Phay said. “We
will be physical but will
have the ability to run in
transition or post up.”
The Golden Eagles
have even more depth
for practice. EJ Boyce
(Boise), Kenrick (Ontario), Ryker Pierce
(Rexburg) and LaMarcus
White (Columbus, Ga.)
will all redshirt this season for CSI.
“This year’s CSI men’s basketball team
should be fun to watch with a group of guys
that are very athletic and who play hard,” Phay
said. “This year’s team has a lot of depth at
each position, which will allow us to do many
different things.”
The SWAC will continue to be one of, if not
the most competitive, conference in the country.
“We know that the SWAC will be as tough
as it ever has been so we have our work cut
out for us but we expect to be in the mix for a
SWAC Championship,”Phay said.
The Golden Eagles open the 2014-2015 campaign ranked fifth in the NJCAA pre-season
poll and third in the Sporting News pre-season
poll.
Other SWAC schools listed in the poll include Salt Lake CC at No. 8 and North Idaho
College at 21st.

Jared Phay
Head Coach
1st Season
Jared Phay begins his first season as the College of Southern
Idaho head men’s basketball coach.
Phay joined the Golden Eagles after 10 years as the North Idaho
College head coach.
“We have watched him grow. We have watched his program
through the years and Jared does things the right way.” said CSI
Athletic Director Joel Bate.
During his time with the Cardinals, he was named Region 18
Coach of the Year three times. He won Scenic West Athletic Conference Championships in 2006, 2009 and 2010. The last seven
years, he has posted 20 wins or more and has 221 career wins at
North Idaho.
In 2010-2011, Phay led the Cardinals to their first ever No. 1 national ranking in school history from Nov. 23, 2010 to Jan. 4, 2011.
Academics are very important to Phay. In
2011-2012, his Cardinal team was one of only 10
NJCAA basketball teams in the country to earn
Academic All-American status.
Phay assisted at North Idaho from 2003-2005
and prior to that he was an assistant coach at Motlow State CC for one season. Before that he had

Brock Morris
Assistant Coach
2nd Season
Brock Morris begins his second season at the College of Southern Idaho as an assistant men’s basketball coach.
Morris came to CSI from The University of Louisiana-Lafayette
where he served as the Director of Basketball Operations under
head coach Bob Marlin from 2010 to 2013.
During Coach Morris’ three seasons in Lafayette, the Cajuns had
tremendous success on and off the court. UL won more games during the 2011-12 season than any Cajun team in over a decade. They
were honored with hosting the first post-season game ever played
in the Cajundome, NJCAA longest active winning streak during
the 2010-11 season, Sun Belt Conference Division Champions, six
of the top 10 best team semester GPAs in school history and nine
players honored academically by the Sun Belt Conference.
Coach Morris was vital in the development of Louisiana point guard Elfrid Payton. During Payton’s
sophomore season (2012-13), he was the only player in NCAA Division I to average more than 15 points, five
assists, five rebounds and two steals. Payton earned First Team All-Sun Belt honors and earned an invite for
USA Basketball’s Under19 team tryout.
“Coach Brock reminds me of myself, always trying to get better and learn more about the game, but with
that he always found time to help me get a workout in no matter the time of day. That kind of drive lets me
know he’ll be a great head coach one day!” Payton said.
Morris also coached 2013 freshman All-American and Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Shawn Long.
Coach Mooris spent two seasons - 2008-09 and 2009-10 - as the graduate assistant for his alma mater, the
University of Alabama. During those two years he
worked under current Alabama head coach Anthony
Grant and former head coach (current North carolina
State head coach) Mark Gottfried.
Coach Morris played collegiately at Snead State
College before transferring to the University of
Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Alabama in 2008 and his
master’s degree in human environmental sciences
with a concentration in sports management in 2010.
He is married to Amanda (Archer.)
“Brock has become known as one of the best recruiters in college basketball at any level! Brock has a great
understanding of the game and I believe will be a great

Golden Eagle
Basketball
McDonald’s, locally owned and operated by Bill and
Donna Kyle in Twin Falls, Burley and Jerome sponsors
the CSI Golden Eagles and the McSlam-n-Jam. The
money pledged for every dunk during home Golden Eagle
basketball games is split between CSI Athletics and the
Ronald McDonald House.
The Reason
When a child becomes seriously ill, the whole family suffers, particularly if the child must be hospitalized or receive outpatient
treatment far away from home for extended periods of time.
To be with their child, parents often sleep on uncomfortable chairs or cots, or bear the expense and impersonal atmosphere of
a hotel room. At a time when they want all their strength available for their child, the simple demands of everyday life can seem
overwhelming.
For these families, Ronald McDonald House offers a refuge from the hospital, a home-away-from-home, where they can have a
room of their own, a comfortable bed, kitchen and laundry facilities, toys for the kids, and a cup of hot coffee.
Ronald McDonald House
For the child, it’s knowing that mom and dad are close by, in a good place. It’s having a comforting, peaceful place to go from
the hospital.
For a brother or sister who cannot be there, it’s knowing that other family members are safe while away in a strange city.
For the parents in the House, it’s knowing that they are not alone, that others have gone through similar situations and survived.
It’s new parents getting practical advice from “veterans.” It’s people drawing hope and strength from late-night conversations in
corridors and kitchens, sharing experiences that can be difficult for family and friends back home to fully understand.
And, it’s a place to treasure every moment of having a child “home,” even if for just a short time.
For board members and volunteers, who give of their time, money, and skills, it’s knowing that what they do really helps.
How The House Operates
Each Ronald McDonald House is unique, created by a team of local citizens to meet the needs of their community. The House
is owned and operated by the local not-for-profit organization created by these citizens.
Local McDonald’s restaurants become involved in initial fundraising once several key elements are present: medical advisors
from a hospital with a need for such a House; a parent organization comprised of people whose children have been treated or are being
treat at the same hospital; and other interested and concerned volunteers.
To varying degrees, all groups participate in planning, construction, furnishing, building community awareness, securing goods
and services, and ongoing House operations. Other local and national companies also volunteer their support through material
donations and monetary contributions.
Families using the House donate $5 to $15 per day, if they can afford it. These revenues pay for part of the costs of continuing
House operations.
How It Began
The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia in 1974 as the result of the perseverance and dedication of Fred Hill,
then a Philadelphia Eagles football player.
Today, through similar efforts by other groups of dedicated individuals, Ronald McDonald House provides temporary housing
for more than 350,000 people a year in facilities throughout the United States; Canada; Australia; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Geissen,
West Germany.
McDonald’s Corporation assists in increasing public awareness and in providing start-up funding for the new Houses. The local
not-for-profit organization operating the House can quality for $25,000 grant from Ronald McDonald’s Children’s Charities.
Most importantly, it is the time and services of local volunteers and the local contributions of money and materials that make it
possible for the Ronald McDonald Houses to be open and operating.
Assisting in these efforts, McDonald’s restaurant franchisees, holding individual promotions around the country, have raised
more than $25 million for the Ronald McDonald Houses and the families they serve.
If you have questions about the national Ronald McDonald House program or wish to contact a local Ronald McDonald House
regarding services, activities, volunteer work or tax deductible donations, write or call: Ronald McDonald House, 101 Warm Spring
Ave., Boise, ID 83712.

Dr. Jeff Fox was named the fourth College of Southern Idaho
President in October of 2013, with an official start date of January
2014. He started at CSI as an Associate Professor of English in 1987;
in 2006, he attained the rank of Professor of Merit. He received
his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English from California
State University at Sacramento and his Ph. D. in Higher Education
Leadership from the University of Idaho (his 2008 dissertation was on
community college presidencies.)
From 1987 to 2000, he taught a variety of courses including
literature, humanities, composition, and Japanese language. Fox
was appointed as Director of the Academic Development Center in
2000, and in 2003 he became Chair of the English, Languages, and
Philosophy Department. Fox was selected as CSI Academic Teacher of
the Year in 1995, and he was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award
from the J. A. & Kathryn Albertson and CSI Foundations in 2000.
In 2008 after a national search, Fox was appointed Executive Vice
President and Chief Academic Officer.
He and Evin, his wife of 31 years, raised their two sons in Twin Falls.
Athletic Director Joel Bate
Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle
Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.
Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived
on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with
student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.
Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden
Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled
a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA
Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional
basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy
Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly
High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English
department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball,
track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place
state finishes.
Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State
University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986.
Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
