Useful information
Useful information
There are a host of appealing retailers located between
the River Elbe and the Alster Lake. Shopping arcades like
Hanse-Viertel and Europa Passage, as well as the many
shops around the Binnenalster, are all typically Hamburg,
whilst the area between Hamburg’s Rathaus (town hall) and
central station is virtually covered in big-name brands.
Store opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7/8
p.m. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
International press: a selection of international newspapers and magazines can be found at the newsagents in the
Wandelhalle at Hamburg central station. Large bookstores,
such as Thalia, also offer a great range of English-language
publications.
Museums: 66 museums and exhibitions all offer up impressive displays for inquisitive visitors. A number of museums
are closed on Mondays. Opening times and admission fees
are available at http://english.hamburg.de/
Eating out: Labskaus, herring and other traditional Hamburg dishes, as well as national and international cuisine, are
all served up in the city’s vast array of restaurants. You can
normally choose your own seats, but are sometimes seated
by staff. Smoking is only permitted outdoors or in designated smoking areas. If you’re feeling peckish, why not try a
typical Franzbrötchen pastry, and a genuine Alsterwasser
(shandy) to wash it down.
Payment: all prices include a service charge and VAT, and
there’s no extra charge if individuals pay separately. It is
however the norm in restaurants to add a 5 - 10% tip to
your bill.
Almost all stores and restaurants accept credit and debit
cards. You can also withdraw euros at any ATM (subject to
a fee).
Insider-tips
Insider-tips
Here are a few tips about places those who know Hamburg
well like to frequent – we recommend trying them out!
Landungsbrücken & harbour boat trips: countless boats
leave the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken every minute to take
people on boat trips around the harbour and the waterways
– not to be missed!
Alter Elbtunnel (Old Elbe Tunnel): opened in 1911 and
free of charge, this tunnel features historic lifts that take
pedestrians and cyclists under the river so they can pass
through the 426 metre-long tiled tunnel to reach the opposite riverbank.
Fisch Markt (Fish market): every Sunday, fruit, flowers,
and of course fish, are all available at Hamburg’s most
famous market for early birds and those who have partied
into the early hours. It runs from 5:30 - 9:30 a.m.
Planten un Blomen: this park’s Low German name says
it all. Located near the trade fair halls, it’s a great place to take
a stroll or unwind amid plants and flowers until it closes
at 11 p.m. In the summer, a musical fountain show starts at
10 p.m.
Stadtpark (Hamburg City Park): the city’s largest green
expanse covers an area of almost 150 hectares and boasts
a planetarium, outdoor swimming pool, playgrounds, large
grassy areas, flowers, gardens and tree-lined avenues – fun
for all the family.
Elbstrand (Elbe Beach) and beach clubs: Caribbean flair
at a beach club, lounging around with a drink – a great tip if
you want to look on as ships make their way along the Elbe
Beach. The most popular clubs are Strandperle (HamburgOthmarschen, Övelgönner Strand), Strand Pauli (HamburgSt. Pauli, Hafenstraße 89) and GEORGIA Beachclub-Lounge.
So typically Hamburg ...
So typically Hamburg ...
Hamburg’s harbour is its “gateway to the world”. The creation of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages following
a merchant alliance made the city very wealthy. Trade in
oriental wares – coffee, tea and spices – led to Hamburg’s
merchants being given the nickname “Moneybags”. And the
nickname’s popularity means that it’s still in use today.
Also typical of Hamburg, of course, are fish dishes featuring
herring: Matjes (soused herring), Bismarckhering (marinated herring), Grüner Hering (fresh, unpickled herring) and
Brathering (fried herring). Eel and plaice are also popular.
And not forgetting Labskaus, traditional sailors’ fayre made
of cured mince and garnished with Rollmops (rolled pickled
herring fillets), a fried egg and beetroot. The dishes are often
enjoyed with fried or jacket potatoes. And a Hamburg pilsner
is a great thirst quencher. In the Middle Ages, Hamburg was
known as the “Hanseatic brewery” on account of its almost
600 breweries.
Just like in many parts of Northern Germany, older Hamburgers still speak Low German. And it’s not rare for people to
greet one another all over Northern Germany and at any time
of day, whether at the bakery or the office, with a short and
sweet “Moin!”. The locals also acknowledge each other with
“Hummel, Hummel!”, which is to be answered with “Mors,
Mors!” – try it out for yourself!
This greeting can be traced back to the nickname “Hans
Hummel”, which was given to an old Hamburg water carrier.
These days, you can bump into many genuine Hamburgers
in the numerous traditional pubs along the harbour. In other
words, people who were born and raised in the city (newcomers are referred to as Quiddje, which is sailors’ slang for a
landlubber) and hear people recounting anecdotes.
Facts about Hamburg
Facts about Hamburg
Welcome to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – its
official name. It covers an area of some 755 km² and is
home to over 1.8 million people. Hamburg is Germany’s
second largest city.
The Rathaus (town hall, built in 1886/87) houses the Hamburg Parliament and Senate. Its foundation was built on
more than 4,000 oak pillars. Its tower is 112 metres high
and marks the city centre. Close to the market square before it, itself a popular event venue, is the Alster, which flows
past the town hall and, just a few hundred metres further
on, into the River Elbe. The city is also full of innumerable
dykes, streams and canals. Hamburg has more bridges than
any other European city – even more than Venice, Amsterdam and London combined.
Hamburg’s harbour stretches along the banks of the Elbe
and can be traced back to 1189 and the time of Emperor
Barbarossa. It is Germany’s largest seaport and one of the
world’s twenty largest container transhipment terminals.
This makes this maritime metropolis, which is steeped in
tradition, the ideal location for the International Tribunal for
the Law of the Sea, which has been based in Hamburg for
over thirty years.

What about public transport?
What about public transport?
Visitors have a variety of options when it comes to getting
around by themselves.
These are the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and Elbe ferries: it is
advisable to purchase a “HVV ticket” from the HVV valid for
a specific number of people and days. All means of transport
may be used and tickets need not be validated. (All general
information, as well as connections and prices, is available
free of charge at www.hvv.de/en and in the form of an app
for iPhones and Android smartphones.)
Taxis: the ivory-coloured cars are scattered around the city
and tend to congregate in front of hotels and prominent
areas. Standard prices per kilometre apply.
Europcar rental cars, car2go and bike taxis constitute
alternative ways of getting around. The StadtRAD bike rental
system is a great way to get from A to B in a cost-effective
and green manner; the red bikes can be hired at many points
around Hamburg and can be paid for by credit and debit cards
– and the first 30 minutes are free. More information can be
found at http://stadtrad.hamburg.de

LEO MEETING POINT
This is a source of information, a place to get to know
people, or just somewhere to have a chat – you’ll find Leos
from around the world at the Generator Hostel, Steintorplatz 3, 20099 Hamburg (located centrally, right next to the
train station). Leos get 10% off all non-alcoholic beverages
at the bar. And you can get your delegation polo shirts at
www.generatorhostels.com, where you’ll also find plenty
more information.
Highlight: the Leo reception – Saturday 6 July 2013
All new: Leos are getting everything ready to welcome
Leos and Lions friends at an official opening ceremony and
reception. There will also be a fair, where European Leos
can introduce themselves to all guests – and no, we certainly won’t forget to let our hair down too!
Where:
Edelfettwerk, Schnackenburgallee 202,
22525 Hamburg
When:
from 8.30 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Please note: strictly no under 18s.

Hamburg Messe and Lions Markt: the German Leo districts present their projects.
Leo parcel service at Hamburg Messe: Leos can get
all their souvenirs delivered home safely, quickly and at
a reasonable price thanks to their UPS discount. So they

helping children and young adults.
Fun for kids on Jungfernstieg: face paint and a couple
of brushstrokes can brighten the day of any Leo cub. All
donations welcome.
Parade
