Before you arrive in Hamburg Congratulations! You have already completed the application procedure and it won’t be long now till you come to Hamburg. We will provide detailed information on the first steps during our Welcome Days. If you do not understand something or have trouble with anything, please do not hesitate to ask. We will always try to help you as fast and as effectively as we can. Learning Agreements Erasmus requires Learning Agreements (LA) that have to be signed by both Universities. Please ask the International Office at your Home University when you have to hand in your Learning Agreement. The courses at Universität Hamburg will be published either in September (winter semester) or in March (summer semester), therefore we recommend filling in and signing the LA already in Hamburg. However, if you need to have a Learning Agreement earlier than that, please find the course catalogue for the Winter Term 2015/2016 on the web-page of STiNE-net: https://www.stine.unihamburg.de. Don’t get confused due to any deadlines for the course registration. These deadlines apply only for the regular students but not for guest students! During our orientation days (Welcome Day and Study Orientation) you will be advised by your departmental coordinators how to enroll in your courses. Buddy Program We are proud of our Buddy Program offered at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Business Administration. Every guest student will get in touch with his/her Buddy who will be there to help with your first steps in Hamburg. Your buddy is also there to help you with any organizational or other problems during your stay. You will be contacted by the coordinator of the Buddy Program, Halit Tas, before your arrival in Hamburg. However, if you want to inform yourself about the program and its activities, please check out their website: http://www.wiso.uni-hamburg.de/en/international-office/buddy-programme/ or become part of the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Buddy1516/?fref=ts We strongly recommend you to participate in the Buddy Program, as it will be very helpful especially at the beginning and provides you with a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends! 4 2. Universität Hamburg Universität Hamburg was founded on March 28th, 1919, by Wilhelm Stern and others. It grew out of the previous Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen and the Kolonialinstitut (Colonial Institute) as well as the Akademisches Gymnasium. In spite of its relatively short history, 6 Nobel Prize Winners and many notable scholars are affiliated with the University. The total recruitment in the year 2014 was about 9,700 freshmen contributes to the current total of 42,106 students. Last year 6,658 students graduated (Bachelor and Master) and 845 received doctoral degrees. Students can choose from different 120 majors on 26 Departments of 8 Faculties. The University is located in Hamburg’s formerly Jewish “Grindel” quarter. This neighbourhood formed the locus of Jewish spiritual and social activities before this culture was brutally halted by the National Socialists. A picture painted by students on the Wall of the building Von-Melle-Park 9 is a sign of remembrance of life as it used to be and the destruction of Hamburg’s Jewish community. Today, the campus and the “Grindel” pulsate with life. The central location offers many benefits – not just the good public transportation connections, but also the broad range of bookshops, cafés, cinemas, restaurants and pubs that surround the University. Libraries, student restaurants and everything else a student needs are also located in close proximity to the university campus. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Business Administration (HBS Hamburg Business School) are two out of eight Faculties of Universität Hamburg. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences consists of 3 Departments: Economics, Socioeconomics and Social Sciences (Sociology/Journalism/Political Sciences). The Faculty of Business Administration (HBS) offers programmes in Business Administration (BWL). Having all this data and the nice aspects of the city of Hamburg in mind, it is easy to understand why Universität Hamburg is one of Germany’s most popular student locations. We hope you are going to be another big fan of our University and its possibilities. 5 Important Contacts at the University Study organisational issues: Immatrikulation/Exmatrikulation, loss of Semester Ticket, change of address: CampusCenter Alsterterrasse 1, 20354 Hamburg Service Telephone: +49 40 42838 - 7000 Service Point/Service Telephone: Services for Incoming students - Mrs. Birgit Alpen: Mon – Wed: 9:00–13:00, Thu: 14:00–16:00 Tue, Wed: 9:00 - 10:00 Other organisational issues: Erasmus documentation (Confirmation of Stay, Confirmation of Soujourm), housing, general questions concerning your stay, support and understanding: International Office Faculties WiSo/BWL Lena Sheynfeld Von-Melle-Park 5 (Entrance C, room 1067), 20146 Hamburg Tel: 040 42838 - 9328 Email: [email protected] Office hours for incoming students: Tue 14:00 – 16:00, Thu 10:00 – 12:00 Study technical issues: Learning Agreement, ECTS, course choice and exam registration: Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo-Fakultät) Department of Economics (VWL), Bachelor and Master Ms. Andrea Augustin Von-Melle-Park 5 (room C0023) Tel: 040 42838 - 4093 E-Mail: [email protected] Office hours: Tue: 13:00 – 15:00, Thu: 11:00 – 13:00 Department of Social Sciences, Bachelor and Master Mr. Jörg Ebrecht Allendeplatz 1 (room 237) Tel: 040 42838 - 4691 Email: [email protected] Office hours: Tue: 13:00 – 15:00, Thu: 11:00 – 13:00 Department of Socioeconomics (Sozialökonomie), Bachelor, Master, MiBAS, HEHCM Ms. Alexa Kramer Von-Melle-Park 9 (room A 115) Tel: 040 42838 2552 Email: [email protected] Office hours: Tue: 13:00 – 15:00, Thu: 11:00 – 13:00 Faculty of Business Administration (HBS) Business Administration (BWL): Bachelor and Master Ms. Astrid Kahl Von-Melle-Park 5 (room C0015) Tel: 040 42838 - 5510 E-Mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Office hours: Tue: 13:00 – 15:00, Thu: 11:00 – 13:00 6 Semester-Contribution You do not have to pay any fees at Universität Hamburg, but you will have to pay the semester contribution. Most of the libraries offer computer-work-spaces where you can log in with your library card number and your chosen password. If you want to use the free W-LAN on Campus, you need your so-called UHH-ID. You can get it at: Rechenzentrum (RRZ) Schlüterstraße 70, 20146 Hamburg Tel.: 040/42838-7790 http://www.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/ (type “Rechenzentrum Uni Hamburg” into Google) Opening hours: Mo-Fri: 8:00-23:00, Sat-Sun & holidays: 10:00-18:00 STiNE-support: RRZ also offers support you with questions regarding STiNE, computer, etc. If you need anything for a project, like cameras, huge printouts, a dictaphone, etc. you can usually borrow it there (or they tell you where at the University you can get them). Just drop by or call them. RRZ also offers computers to work with Windows, Mac OX and Linux (use UHH-ID). Printouts and copies: If you need printouts you can find a lot of copy shops all over the Campus (“Cobra Copa”, “Aba-Co”, “An der Uni”). However, make sure you get a Copycard as this is much cheaper for copies and printouts than any copy shop. Copycards can be bought in the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek and cost 5€. 3€ are deposit, 2€ can be used. After that, you can always reload it with cash at the Stabi. They can be used in nearly every printer and copy machine in the libraries and CiP-Pools. Furthermore, you have the possibility to print really cheap at the Rechenzentrum in Schlüterstraße. To do so, you have to bring your documents to print and load them on one of the PCs or Macs provided. You also need your UHH-ID. Doing this, you can print 240 pages for free, afterwards it will cost you 2,1 Cent/page. To print in the Rechenzentrum, you need a German EC-card, as you cannot pay in cash and they will not give you even your free pages without registering your account with your EC-card! 10 STiNE – Student Information System STiNE is the basis for the organisational things linked to your studies. The Free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg has a lot to offer, as it is the second-largest city in Germany and the eighth-largest city in the European Union. On weekends, Hamburg’s 1,7million residents and the city’s guests head for the river Elbe, the Alster, the parks and the beautiful surrounding countryside. But also on a day with bad weather there is a lot to enjoy: countless museums, cafés, bars and theatres are waiting to entertain guests. Make sure you check out the harbour area – it is the focus of the city’s business life, although the trading and the media industry are also major influences. The Hamburg harbour is the seventh biggest in the world and the second largest in Europe after Rotterdam. As is typical for Northern Germany, the original language of Hamburg is Low German, usually referred to as Hamborger Platt (German Hamburger Platt) or Hamborgsch. It is still in use, albeit by a minority and rarely in public. Nevertheless, you will always hear „Moin“ instead of „Hallo“ and a couple of other words which are typical for this citystate. Geographically, Hamburg is located directly between Continental Europe to its south, Scandinavia to its north, the North Sea to its west and the Baltic Sea to its east. As you can see, Hamburg is definitely a perfect base for weekend trips all over Europe or just to the seaside nearby. Hamburg is located on the river Elbe at the confluence with the rivers Alster and Bille. The central city area is situated around the Binnenalster ("Inner Alster") and the Außenalster ("Outer Alster") both of which are originally the river Alster but retained as lakes. Being a part of the ancient Hanseatic League, Hamburg’s Architecture is quite nice, although it lost around 70% of the original buildings in World War 2. Visiting the HafenCity, you can observe the construction of a completely new quarter next to the harbour. By the way, who would have guessed that Hamburg is the city with the most bridges in Europe and not Venice? Furthermore, Hamburg won the European Green Capital Award. Don’t miss the countless exhibitions and offers concerning environmental issues. With over 90 different consulates in Hamburg, the likelihood that your country is represented is very high, which means that cultural life is vibrant. You can find out more about Hamburg from one of the various guidebooks or on the internet at www.hamburg.de. You can also obtain additional information from a tourist information centre following your arrival in the city. These are located at the airport, the main station (Kirchenallee exit) and the piers (Landungsbrücken) at the port of Hamburg in St. Pauli. 14 Accommodation in Hamburg (apart from offered dorm rooms) Youth Hostels and Private Dorms in Hamburg A&O Hostels Hamburg: http://www.aohostels.com/de/hamburg/ Backpackers St. Pauli GmbH Bernstorffstraße 98, 22767 Hamburg www.backpackers-stpauli.de Backpacker instant sleep Max-Brauer-Allee 277, 22769 Hamburg www.instantsleep.de Backpacker Hostel “Superbude” Hamburg St. Georg und Hamburg St. Pauli http://www.superbude.de/hotel-hostel-hamburg/backpacker-hotel-hamburg.php Jugendherberge Hamburg "Auf dem Stintfang" Alfred-Wegener-Weg 5, 20459 Hamburg www.djh-nordmark.de/index.php?id=766 Jugendherberge Hamburg "Horner Rennbahn" Rennbahnstr. 100, 22111 Hamburg www.djh-nordmark.de/index.php?id=775 Schanzenstern Schanze Bartelsstr. 12, 20357 Hamburg www.schanzenstern.de Schanzenstern Altona Kleine Rainstr. 24-26, 22765 Hamburg www.schanzenstern.de Hostel Meininger Altona Goetheallee 11, 22765 Hamburg www.meininger-hotels.com 15 Studierendenwerk Hamburg: rent a room for a study period Some of you have already got a room in one of the dorms of Studierendenwerk. First steps in Hamburg Register at Einwohnermeldeamt One of the most important things you have to do quickly after your arrival: registration. After the official start of your housing, you have 10 days to take your: - Passport - 10€ - your matriculation (enrolment) document to the residents’ registration office. There you'll get a certificate (registration confirmation) that you have to show at the administration-office of your residence. You will also need this certificate for opening a bank account, getting a library card and many other things. Your buddy should help you to find the nearest registration office and accompany you. Please make an appointment beforehand, to avoid the long waiting line (can be done online: https://www.hamburg.de/kundenzentrum). You have to register in the residents’ registration office, your residence belong to, depending on the city district you live in! Open a Bank Account Opening a bank account is also necessary. Make sure you take your student-ID and matriculation (enrolment) document (“Studienbescheinigung”) as accounts are free for students! You need as well the registration confirmation (“Meldebescheinigung”) which you will get after your registration at the Einwohnermeldeamt (see above) and your passport. Ask your buddy for assistance. In the meantime (if you have to pay anything and do not have an account yet) it is also possible to take cash to any bank and wire it to a certain account. So do not worry if it takes a couple of days to open an account. After your stay, do not forget to close the account, as they start charging you fees if you do not show your student ID on a regular basis of 6 months. Health Insurance, Hospital and Doctor’s Fees, Psychological Counseling Service Health Insurance Health insurance is one of the most essential things you need to study at Universität Hamburg. Without health insurance, you will not be able to enrol! 18 Appropriate insurances depend on your country of origin: Guest students from the European Union: You need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which you get from your health insurance company at home. Please bring your EHIC card with you! Guest students from Turkey: You need the form A/T 11 as a valid health insurance. If you don't have this document, you need to get a German Student Health Insurance (ca. 80€ per month). Guest students from all other countries: You need to get a German Student Health Insurance. This will cost you ca. 80€ per month. Your buddy can assist you to get it. You can either apply for it after your arrival or do it before online. In case you do it after your arrival, please make sure you get yourself a Travel Insurance before you come to Germany to cover the first days. In case if you need an enrolment confirmation please send the blanc form from your health insurance to the International Office (Lena Sheynfeld) to fill it in and prove your student’s status. Please note that due to German law you will have to pay the monthly contribution until the end of the semester no matter when you leave Hamburg (Winter Semester: 01.10.-31.03.; Summer Semester: 01.04.-30.09.) Medical care You will not have to pay anything at a hospital or a doctor’s office in Germany, as they deal directly with your insurance company. Therefore do not hesitate to seek help if you do not feel well. Psychological Counselling As we all know that being away from home can be quite stressful sometimes. If you have the need to talk to someone about any issues concerning your stay, your studies or social aspects you cannot or do not want to discuss with your friends or family you can always come to us (Lena Sheynfeld) to get support or rely on the Psychological Counselling Service of the University. The visits are free of charge and they are open daily. Detailed information can be found under the link below: http://www.uni-hamburg.de/campuscenter/beratung/psychologische-beratung.html 19 Public Transport One part of your semester contribution is the public transportation ticket (“Semesterticket”). It allows you to ride almost every kind of public transport within the Hamburg public transport area (HVV), such as busses, ferry and subways (U-Bahn and S-Bahn), over the whole semester. Please note that fast busses (“Schnellbus”), the sightseeing-buses and ferries are not part of it! You will have to pay extra for using them. Line and route network plan: http://www.hvv.de/en/timetables/line-route-networks-plans/overview/index.php The U- and S-Bahn trains are operated between 4.30 h and 0.30 h on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends. Use the night bus (“Nachtbus”) if you want to go home after 0.30 during the week. Check out which line ends up near your home. All nightlines meet at Rathausmarkt (city centre), so it is easy to get home from wherever you might be. If you have to buy a ticket for some reason there are different options. You can buy a single ticket or a day pass either in the ticket machine or at the bus driver. If you want a pass on a weekly or monthly basis, you have to go to a HVV-office (the biggest one is right at the central station) with your picture or buy it online: http://www.hvv.de/fahrkarten/ Descriptions of the different tickets and prices can be found under the same link. Please note: In Germany, you do not need your ticket to gain access to the station, but we have so-called controllers who ride the busses and trains and will ask you once in a while to show your ticket. In case you ever forget your Semesterticket at home and you get caught there is a possibility to show it later in one of the HVV offices close to the central station (in this case you have to pay only around 2€). Please note that drinking alcohol in public transport is strictly forbidden. Violation of this rule will entail a fine of 40 €. Please keep in mind to show your ticket to the driver whenever getting on a bus. In case you lose your ticket: Please do not panic!:) Good news: it is possible to get a new ticket if you lose your original one. These red bikes can be taken from stations from all over the city and returned at any of them. The first 30 minutes are free, but even if you need it longer the price per hour is fairly small. Simply register at one of the stations or online: http://stadtrad.hamburg.de/kundenbuchung/. Nightlife The nightlife in Hamburg is broad and wild. You will find hundreds of bars, clubs and other venues to everything you like to do when the sun goes down. However, most of them are located in the area of St.Pauli / Reeperbahn and Sternschanze. Here, one bar faces the other and there is something for everyone! As these areas are quite crowded, especially on the weekends, it is always worth it to try some places off the main roads. Please note that most bars are free to enter, but clubs usually charge you an entrance fee, which can be - depending on the event – quite high on some days. Inform yourself before you get a sudden surprise at the door! We’re absolutely sure that you will figure out the places you like quite quickly, but nevertheless we have chosen a couple of places you should not miss. „Übel & Gefährlich“ „Grüner Jäger“ „Sommersalon“ „Waagenbau“ „Docks“ „Fabrik“ “Kleiner Donner” Feldstraße 66, U-3 “Feldstraße” Neuer Pferdemarkt 23 Spielbudenplatz 22 Max-Brauer Allee 204 Spielbudenplatz 19 Barnerstraße 36 Schulterblatt 73 “PAL” Karolinenstraße 45 “Frappant” “Hafenklang” Zeiseweg 9 Große Elbstrasse 84 “Molotow” “Hamburger Berg” Nobistor 14, Reeperbahn This is not a mountain, but a street off the Reeperbahn.
