summary
A
cclaimed by all as a massive step up, the second Ceramics Expo succeeded in
highlighting the critical role played by today’s ceramics in advanced manufacturing –
and provided a vibrant business forum that undoubtedly laid a strong platform for
future growth.
Cleveland’s I-X Center proved to be the ideal venue and was packed out with over 280 exhibitors,
representing an increase of more than 60% over the launch event last year. Once again, top
industry names lent their support to Ceramics Expo, one reason why the event has quickly
established itself as North America’s premier meeting place for the ceramics industry.
Over 2,700 professionals attended the three-day event at the end of April. From the smallest
niche producer right up to the world’s largest aerospace companies, executives made the trip
to Ceramic City and declared themselves impressed by the breadth and depth of the whole
showcase, the excellent networking opportunities and the highly professional organization.
Setting just the right tone from the outset, Smarter Shows worked closely with the industry at all
levels, right through the year. This really paid dividends and created the true partnership effect,
evident throughout every aspect of the show. All manufacturing elements were covered, from raw
materials to forming, from firing to finishing, through testing and R&D.
Benefiting from a constantly positive atmosphere, the many and varied exhibitors drew an
outstanding response to what they had on offer.
Conference @ Ceramics Expo – already establishing itself as the leading free-to-attend event in its
field – was hailed as a great success and exceeded all expectations. It featured a 60+ speaker lineup full of experience and dynamism, with experts from organizations such as 3M, Rolls-Royce, GE
Aviation, NASA and other leading industry names. The conference examined the challenges and
opportunities facing the ceramic industry today, and how these impact advanced manufacturing.
This report documents in detail the extensive pre-show marketing campaign undertaken by Smarter
Shows in the run-up to the show.

key element of the Ceramics Expo experience was its free-to-attend, twin-track
conference. This began with a plenary session, The Future of the Ceramics Industry,
featuring leaders from Alfred University, Morgan Advanced Materials and NASA’s Glenn
Research Center. This mix of academia, manufacturing technology and R&D reflected
many of the sessions this year and led to an interesting spectrum of approaches,
experiences and solutions.
The attendance throughout the three days was testament
to the high quality of speakers, relevance of the program
and general high standard of organization. “The lectures
were really interesting; we’re actually going to talk to
some of the presenters and maybe there’s an opportunity
for working with them later,” said Kayleigh Porter of
Ceramic Micro Devices Group, Technology Assessment
and Transfer Inc.
“The attendance
throughout the
three days was
testament to the high
Major topics up for discussion included ceramics for
quality of speakers,
energy applications; thermal ceramics; advanced
ceramics in the auto industry; ceramic matrix composites;
relevance of the
testing and QA issues; additive manufacturing; nextgeneration refractories; ceramic/glass optical properties;
ceramic coatings; supply chain management; near-net program and general
shaping; nanoceramics; bioceramics; and high-temp
high standard of
manufacturing. It was clear that this was all very well
directed, as not only were many sessions full, with all seats
organization”
taken, but some also had rows of delegates standing at
the back to make sure they could participate.
The position of the conference section – an open floor event held immediately behind the expo in the
same hall – made this a highly accessible forum. It proved to be a dynamic set of presentations, very
much enhanced by vibrant Q&A sessions. “I got to meet several great panelists along with the people
that were actually in the audience. I really enjoyed cross-networking with a lot of not only industry
specialists but also prospective new customers,” said Josh Pelletier, Technical
Manager – Refractory, Kerneos.
The subject matter, something long in the planning, was all tightly
focused, with Track One addressing applications issues and Track Two
looking at the manufacturing angles. More than 60 invited speakers
took part, and due to their hard work in preparation and the
engaging atmosphere, there was excellent interaction right across
the conference. “My conference speaker experience was very
good,” said Rich Keller, Product Engineering Director, Ignition,
Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “The session was well attended. It went
very well.”
This was a thorough examination of exactly what ceramic and
glass materials can contribute to the future of established and
emerging industries; how advanced research programs are
pushing things forward; current expectations in terms of fabrication
and performance; challenges facing the ceramic and glass
community; and the demands on materials science, manufacturing,
supply and quality assurance.

“I was here last year and it has grown in the
right direction. We are in the powder and
raw material business and we see more and
more ceramic manufacturers present here
with high-quality applications. So that is very
interesting for us”

Melissa Fauth, US Sales Director, Fritsch Milling and Sizing
“We have been very impressed by the whole event, from the stand
organization, to the meetings and seminars and, more importantly,
the standard and volume of new and old customers we have
managed to spend time with. It is bigger and better than last year
and we have already rebooked for next year.”
Rodrigo González, Vice President, Ceramics Business Unit, Nutec Bickley

year. There was a lot of interest in our products… we have had a
lot of inquiries. All in all, a very good exhibition.”
Phil Green, Sales Director, IPS Ceramics
“It’s been great. I have met a lot of customers here and seen a
lot of our suppliers here as well, and it is well worth my time. A lot
of vendors and suppliers here that we get to talk to; some of the
papers were really good. Hopefully they will continue this for years
to come.”
Wesley King, VP Sales and Marketing, Fusion Ceramics Inc

“The experience [of speaking at the conference] was very good.
The session was well attended. The material that I presented as
well as Charles and Jing was very nicely dovetailed, so I think it
went very well.”
Rich Keller, Product Engineering Director – Ignition, Federal-Mogul Powertrain

INDUSTRY SHOW AND CONFERENCE MORE THAN DOUBLES SIZE TO 95,000 SQ FT OF
EXPO SPACE IN 2016
American Ceramic Society Bulletin, December issue
The American Ceramic Society and its partner Smarter Shows (Bath, U.K.) are gearing up for the second annual
Ceramics Expo at the IX Center in Cleveland, Ohio, April 26–28 2016.
Adam Moore, Ceramics Expo event director, says, “Last year 2,117 attendees came to visit 190 vendors. Enthusiasm
has been growing ever since, and, in 2016, we expect well in excess of 3,500 attendees to visit 300 exhibit booths
showcasing a variety of technical ceramic materials and the entire supply chain—from raw materials to products to
manufacturing and test equipment.”
As demand for technical ceramics, glass, and refractory materials grows throughout North America, visitors to
Ceramics Expo will experience a “who’s who” of leading ceramic manufacturers and suppliers. Building on last year’s
popular technical conference, Ceramics Expo’16 will have a free-to-attend twin-track conference focusing on ceramics
and glass material manufacture and applications.
Why should you come to Ceramics Expo? To spend three days in one location to visit 300 vendors offering products
and services along the entire value chain—that’s one unique business opportunity!

Analytical methods for all industries
Particle and process measurement technology is an integral part of the
range of products at POWTECH. At the trade fair, manufacturers will find
numerous analytical methods for a wide variety of bulk solids, from pressure measurement technology to equipment for measuring temperature
or moisture. The range of particle analysis technology extends from
simple laboratory sifting equipment to the sizing of coarse granules to
laser diffraction systems and systems based on dynamic light scattering
and output particle sizes in the micro- and nanometre range. There is a
growing demand for optical methods to determine the particle shape to
optimise the consistency and flow behaviour of a product.

Ceramics Expo 2016 to Make Economic Impact on
Cleveland
Cleveland, Ohio, March 14, 2016—Industry exhibitions often elicit ho-hum
reactions, but this is not the case for Ceramics Expo 2016, a Cleveland, Ohiobased trade show that is anticipated to double in size this year.
Billed as “the industry’s only two-track, free-to-attend commercial and
manufacturing series of conference sessions”, Ceramics Expo 2016 is attracting
visitors from throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Event Director Adam
Moore reports that “in under a year we have grown this expo from 140 to over
250 exhibitors. We are on course to boost visitor numbers by more than 70%
over last year.”
What does this mean for the City of Cleveland? Approximately 2,100 visitors
attended Ceramics Expo 2015; 3,600 are anticipated this year. “Not only will
this have a major impact on hotel, catering, entertainment and transit, but with
the manufacturing and research relationships fostered by the event, business
dollars will also continue to flow into Cleveland and the surrounding area.”
According to figures generated by Destination Cleveland, the city’s
convention and visitors’ bureau, Ceramics Expo 2015 generated in excess
of $3.3m for the city’s economy. The organization projects figures rising to as
much as $5.6m with this year’s exhibition.
Crucial to manufacturing, technical ceramics play a major role in raising the
performance levels of complex components utilized by industries including but
not limited to automotive, medical, electronic, defense, aerospace and more.
All are part of Northeast Ohio’s increasingly growing high-technology sector.
An impressive roster of industry leaders will be leading conference sessions
including: Don Bray, Vice President, Technology, North America, Morgan
Advanced Materials; Dr Charles Compson, Global Technical Director, Almatis
Inc; Doug Freitag, Technical Director-US, Advanced Ceramics Association; Dr
Johannes Homa, CEO, Lithoz; Dr Tracy Albers, President/CTO, Rapid Prototype

in Brighton, United Kingdom. Smarter Shows
organizes industry-leading exhibitions annually
in Europe and North America.
We are the organizer of The Battery Show in Novi, Detroit, which
is co-located with Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo

the addition of Critical Power Expo alongside the show. The
event is the largest battery technology event outside of Asia,
attracting over 300 exhibitors and over 4,000 attendees. The
Battery Show has quickly established itself as the must-attend
exhibition dedicated to advanced battery technology, with
more qualified buyers and decision makers than any other
battery event in North America.
Smarter Shows also organizes Space Tech Expo in Long Beach,
California, which is now in its fifth year, bringing together global
decision makers involved in the design, build and testing
of spacecraft, satellite, launch vehicle and space-related
technologies. Space Tech Expo is co-located with Aerospace
Electrical Systems Expo.
