ANNUAL REPORT 2014 A letter from Cornerstone of Hope’s CEO & Founder, Mark Tripodi When our son Bobby died in May of 2000, I remember thinking, “I want to meet other parent’s that have lost a three year old son!” My heart was searching for an exact match; I didn’t think anyone else could understand my grief or my situation unless they fit “my criteria.” Obviously, I was sorely mistaken. I learned through my own grief process, as well as meeting countless individuals and families over the years, that “grief” does not discriminate. It does not matter the age, the relationship, the circumstances of the loss, or whether the death was expected or sudden. When you lose someone so close to you, the pain can be excruciating. Palpable. Even debilitating. This is why Cornerstone of Hope exists ~ to support those who need compassionate, excellent care. Each year it seems that God opens new doors to opportunities that I never thought would have been possible, and 2014 did not disappoint! Cornerstone was featured on Animal Planet’s hit television series “Treehouse Masters,” we partnered with Family Ministry Center to implement performing arts into our inner city program, Camp Heroes, and three counselors from the clinical staff started the EMDR certification process to better handle our increasing trauma caseload. Throughout the pages of this report, you will learn of some of the many things our team accomplished this year, and you will meet a few of the resilient families we served. As we continue to expand our outreach and partnerships in the community, our donors and volunteers have responded in an amazing way to allow for this growth. Your sacrificial support and trust in our services has been a true blessing! We had four of our parents pass away since the beginning of the school year and we suffered the great loss of a beloved third grade teacher in a car accident this fall. Many of us are hurting at our school. You assisted us as we worked through our grief by providing counselors for a staff in-service to inform teachers about grief, reactions students and staff may experience, and some ways we could help our students and each other. We were able to have two of your counselors facilitate a small grief group for eight students who have directly experienced the death of a parent or family member. It has given them an opportunity to talk about their feelings, work through their grief, and share their grief with others. Many of the students have told me how much they enjoy the group and the activities. It is especially important to have counselors available to them during the holiday season and I can see how the group experience has helped our students on their path of healing. It has been helpful to have your organization as a resource to offer to families in need of grief support. Cornerstone of Hope Columbus has been there for our teachers, our students, our school community, and for me, the school counselor. Both Shannon and Laura have been flexible, empathetic and great with the staff and the kids. I so appreciate your organization and the services you provide. World renowned treehouse builder Pete Nelson and his team from Nelson Treehouse and Supply were the architects behind this newly created therapeutic space in the trees. The eighteen day construction timeline ended with a community unveiling on November 17, 2013 and the premier of “Wild Butterfly Escape” on Animal Planet’s hit television series Treehouse Masters on January 24, 2014. Although the experience was filled with total excitement from start to finish, the actual episode did not capture the true meaning behind the treehouse which is known as Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse! When Lisa Kurtz Luciano: a business leader, philanthropist, dedicated wife, mother of eight and mentor, lost her battle to cancer, she left a surprise gift to Cornerstone from her family’s foundation. Lisa, knowing that her diagnosis was fatal, wanted to do something that would ultimately help her own children and other youth who experience the death of a parent.
