It is with the greatest of appreciation that I thank everyone who is a “friend of the Steuben County Humane Society.” We are truly blessed, because without the help of the community, we simply could not operate. Although we get some funding from the county and the city of Angola, the majority of our funding and support comes from donations, volunteerism, and fund raising. These efforts, in combination with keeping our operating expenses low, allow to focus on finding forever homes for the nearly one-hundred new animals we take-in every month. The Steuben County Humane Society was incorporated in 1972 by a group of concerned animal lovers, and received a Not for Profit Certification 501(C)3 in 1973. The current location was built in 1976. Before that the location was by Redington Heights down at the water treatment plant. Alice and Paul Eble were instrumental developing the shelter from 1972-2008 when they retired from their volunteer service. They are in their 90’s and still alive and well. They represent the foundation on which the shelter was born, and we honor them for their outstanding contributions to Steuben County. The mission of the Steuben County Humane Society remains homes for our animals, promote the humane treatment of animals, including spaying and neutering, and to assist in cruelty and neglect claims.” The Board of Directors is currently made up of 14 board members and 7 honorary board members. The shelter work team is made up of four full time employees and one part time Steve Mumby, President employee, all of which are dedicated beyond belief to the love and care of animals. I am thankful for being a part of the Steuben County Humane Society and for all it does to help animals find new homes. Our challenges are many, but we face each with enthusiasm and with our mission in full view. Our focus over the next several months will be to find funding to continue our spay and neuter program and make repairs to the shelter building, and to work on ways to improve laws to protect the rights of animals. On behalf of the entire board of directors thank you for caring and for supporting our shelter. Featured Pet Milly - Treeing Walker Coonhound Milly is a real sweet pea so snatch her up quick! She is spayed and up-to-date on all her shots. While Milly prefers to be the only dog in your life, she is willing to meet other pups. You never know, you might have her perfect match! She also requests a home without cats because they cramp her style. But don’t miss out! Milly is absolutely beautiful and sports a short tri-colored coat with a personality you’ll adore. Did You Know? 234 pets were adopted last quarter! 3rd Quarter 2012 Shelter Spotlight Featuring Patti Klaiss 1. How long have you been involved with the shelter? I have been at the shelter for almost 6 years. 2. What is your role at the shelter? I am the Senior Team Leader - the “go to” person when the rest of the team needs guidance. I consult with vets, Patti Klaiss, Sr. Team Leader approve adoption applications, answer emails, help spot clean in the afternoon, and make vet runs. I do whatever needs to be done like help clean in the mornings so that we open on time, teach biweekly volunteer classes, update pet biographies and write weekly reports. I spend my evenings on the shelter Facebook talking with volunteers, posting animals, and raising monies. I am a firm believer that I ask no one at the shelter to do anything I have not or would not do myself. I am out in the kennels cleaning every single day. I know all of the animals by name and their personalities. These furry friends have touched my soul. I work hard to ensure they are safe, healthy and get a wonderful home. This is more than a job to me. 3. Do you have any pets of your own? 5 dogs and 4 cats 4. What do you most enjoy about your job? Interacting with the animals, making a differance in their lives and watching them leave when they find a home. We could learn a few things from the animals . They have the ability to forgive and they adapt. Aluminum Cans During the past twelve months, shelter supporters have given over $9000 to benefit our animals just by recycling! If you’d like to help, simply drop off your aluminum cans in the wellmarked dumpster just outside the shelter building. We’ve made this easy while providing a great opportunity to recycle.
