Chairman’s Chat
Competition Secretary’s Notes
A warm welcome to all
our members whether
old or new.
We are obviously sorry that this is the first copy of The Flyer you
have received this year, but I don’t know where the time has gone.
Here we are already half
way through the year
and as I write, our most
recent televised event at
Silverstone having finished
less than 24 hours ago.
I know there were many frustrations with the
organisation at Silverstone, or rather lack of
it. Rest assured I will be voicing my concerns
to the circuit management. However I wish to
focus on the positives and there were many of
them.
Firstly our members having the opportunity
to race on the International Circuit, a rarely
available option.
Secondly our races going out live on television
(for the second time this year) and finally the
size of the grids we were able to produce and
the quality of racing. Motors TV were very
pleased indeed!
Some of you were a little concerned about
the large mixed grids and faster cars, but
overall most feedback has been very positive
with almost everybody having a battle with
somebody else right the way through the field.
One ongoing concern I have is the number
of entrants racing in the pre 83 series. The
committee is working hard to find ways of
improving the grids and is optimistic that
numbers will indeed grow. Those of you
registered please do try to turn out whenever
possible: There are only have three more
meetings on our calendar now.
Thank You to all our Sponsors
I would like to thank all our sponsors for their
continuing support: Autoglym, Thermex, SVG
Motorsport, Burton Power, Hammerite, SGSS
Design, Aford Awards and Berkshire Pallets.
We also extend a warm welcome to our new
sponsors this year Toyo Tires, Envirotec
and PRG Trailers. Their help is vital for the
future development of the club and greatly
appreciated by all the members.
Perhaps the brain was dulled somewhat by the excellent annual
awards bash in January: again well attended at a very good venue
and a fuller report is contained in this issue. Many thanks to all who
attended and kept me supplied with the brain-numbing nectar!
This year’s competition calendar was greeted with great enthusiasm
when announced back in November as one of the best in memory. It
is just a pity that good weather was not written into script.
It started of course at the Live Motors TV event at Donington Park in
March. It is obvious that to get on schedules such as these we have
to get good grids and so category amalgamation has proved to be
essential. Nonetheless despite not very good weather it was a good
meeting.
Sadly the Pre ’66 contingent was not happy being combined at
Donington and so were removed from the Silverstone event and had
their own races at Cadwell Park at the end of May.
We then moved up north to Croft and the weather followed us. Even
with the weather and smaller grids the action was good.
Just a few weeks later we, and the weather, moved down country a
bit to Snetterton. The short gap in the programme did have an effect
on the grid sizes but again there was some excellent racing.
You might expect that moving into the last month of the first half of
the year we would be greeted by wall-to-wall sunshine for the Live
Motors TV with Hammerite on the Silverstone International Circuit.
But no, all of Saturday morning was really miserable. That just
compounded the debacle over access and space in the garages and
paddock. The club is sorry about that but it really was outside our
control.
You should have seen the apology and explanation from Ian Watson
at BARC in a recent Hot News, but if not it is reproduced overleaf.
The TV events have proved very popular and competitive. Sadly
in those and at others there have been some incidents which are
simply not acceptable.
Letters have been sent to those involved and I emphasise again that
repetition could result in parties being asked to leave the club.
Now we move on to the Cadwell Classic Festival at the end of July,
Brands Hatch in September and finally Spa in October. You should
have seen in Hot News the differing regulations for racing at Spa and
you are urged to read them carefully.
We do need to decide by the end of July (not June as in a recent Hot
News) how many are committed to the event otherwise spaces will
have to be sold to other competitors.
That is all from me for now and I look forward to seeing you at
Cadwell.

Andy Johnson.

Helping Make The Biggest Smiles
When A Smile Is Much Needed
This year has seen many of our
members’ cars carrying a very
special logo supporting The Indee
Rose Trust. If you have not been
talked into carrying one by Colin
Gibbons or Sonia you soon will be!
Russell Dopson tells how it all
came about: “The Indee Rose Trust
was opened in September 2009 in
the memory of our beautiful fouryear-old daughter Indee, who was

Dear Competitor,
I write this letter to all of those who were competing in the recent race meeting organised
by the club at Silverstone on the International circuit, which did not run as smoothly as we
would have liked to see by any stretch of the imagination.
We always knew that the paddock was going to be particularly tight for space and despite
liaising with both Silverstone staff and security as well as employing a specialist parking
team we never got on top of the issue from the start of testing on Friday. Making use of this
purpose built facility merely proved that Formula One bears no resemblance to the
motorsport we are regularly involved with and perhaps we should not try to put the two
together again in the future.
There were a number of issues from signage to rubbish bins and from briefing notes to
judicial matters and it would be easy to point the finger at people, but to me that would
serve no purpose. On behalf of the club I must hold up my hand and apologise for the
inadequacies of the weekend and do everything to ensure that you are never put in the
same position again.
On a positive note I understand that there was some good racing and a large number of
people enjoyed the experience of driving this layout of the Silverstone circuit, which is one
that the club has not had access to in the past. I very much hope that you can reflect on
these positive aspects of the weekend rather than the negatives, put this weekend behind
us and move on.
May I thank you in anticipation of your continued support of the BARC and say that I look
forward to seeing you at an event soon.
Best regards
Ian Watson

tumour in January 2009 and sadly
passed away in June that year.
“We were determined to keep
Indee’s memory alive and were
blown away by her courage and
bravery while going through
treatment during which we also
had the pleasure of meeting other
children and their families going
through these horrific times.
“It was clear that it was the attitude
of these children that kept the
families going and so we set our
aims to ‘create smiles and memories’
and offer something to all the
families we have the pleasure of
helping”
The Indee Rose Trust creates unique
Treasure Boxes for children, offers
a well-deserved break by the sea
at Indee’s beach house retreat and
offers a one-off support grant to
help the family at this difficult time.
Treasure Boxes are sent on referral
from hospitals, social workers,
medical professionals and Internet
searches. They are “wish boxes”
requested from the child whose life
has been affected by the condition.
Each Treasure Box is unique and
tailor-made for the child and can cost
up to £400. They create the biggest
smiles when a smile is much needed.
Treatment is often harsh and the
child and family spend weeks in
hospital with little to look forward
too. “We have seen the smiles
created when we deliver the boxes”,
added Russell.
“More than 450 children a year are
diagnosed with brain and spinal
tumours and our ultimate goal is to
reach all these children every year.
We would like to thank everyone
that has helped us over the past four
years. Together we have created over
250 smiles and memories for these
lovely children.
“We must say a huge thank you
to Colin Gibbons for agreeing to
have Indee’s logo on his racing car.
We now have more than 100 cars
Nigel Vaulkhard
sporting Indee’s little man! Indee
drew the little man while in hospital
receiving treatment for her tumour
and the remarkable thing is that she
taught herself to draw again with
her left hand while being partially
paralysed by the effects of her brain
tumour. It makes us all so very proud
to see all the cars wearing Indee’s
logo”.

logos, contact Colin Gibbons

Former club member and racer
Nigel Vaulkhard died last month.
The 66-year-old co-founded the
World Touring Car and World

Bamboo Engineering in 2009 with
Richard Coleman.
Roger Stanford commented:
It was with great sadness that I was
informed of the sudden death of
Nigel. He was out mountain biking
with his sons, Ollie and Harry,
when he suffered a heart attack.
All efforts to revive him very sadly
failed.
Nigel was a valued member of our
club back in the ‘90s competing
in the ex-Andy Bacon A35 and
then moving upwards into a Lotus
Cortina. One could never mistake
Nigel’s Corty, not only for his often
spirited driving, but for its bright

When Nigel was around, one could
be sure there would be some good

will miss him.

Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Presentation

The club stand before the show opened.
The club took a stand at the
Race Retro show at Stoneleigh in
Warwickshire and a very worthwhile
investment of time and effort it once
again proved to be.
The committee is very grateful for
the two beautifully prepared cars our
members were happy to provide for
the stand and all of the effort put in
by volunteers in setting up the stand
and chatting to the many visitors.
Both the fabulous Texaco Sierra
Cosworth of Jim McLoughlin
and the immaculate A35 of Paul
Clayton pulled in lots of interested
spectators and coupled with Barry
Lee’s presence for most of the
weekend kept the stand looking very
busy indeed.
I think the two most heard phrases
of the three-day event had to be: ‘Is
it the actual car?’ and ‘My dad had
one of those’. No prizes for guessing
to which car each applied!
We had visits from many well-known
people in the field of motor sport
including Matt Neal and Steve
Berry to name but two. To me the
interest in the Texaco car was no
surprise, but I must admit to being
taken aback by the continued flurry
of questions about the little A35
and I think Paul hardly had time to
draw breath over the course of the
weekend as people were constantly
asking about the specification of
the car and availability of parts and
panels.
The committee was very encouraged
by the number of enquiries about
all of the club’s championships from
potential entrants. Let’s hope we see
some of them out on the starting grid!

Race one was a fairly straight forward
affair with Dave Howard’s big cat
dominating from start to finish
although easing off towards the
end allowed Mark Freemantle’s Mk1
Escort to close the gap to the Jaguar
steadily over the last few laps.
Race two saw the resumption of
similar battles through the field,
but this time it was Dave Howard
who succumbed to the pressure
of Freemantle’s Escort spinning off
before resuming to finish fourth. This
promoted Stephen Primmet to second
after he had seen off Mark Osborne
in the Dolomite who was left to
battle with the Jag, before eventually
securing a fine third place to match his
performance in the first race.
A special mention goes to Alan

Toyo Tyres Pre 2005 Production Touring Car Series
The 10 Pre 2005 contenders
combined with the Honda VTEC
Challenge cars faced wet conditions
for qualifying which saw Andrew
Busby (Peugeot 206) just 0.046s
ahead of Phil Waller (Peugeot 206)
and Steve Rowles (Proton Satria GT1).
It was cloudy but dry for the Saturday
afternoon first race but Busby and
Philip Burden (Peugeot 206) soon
hit problems and it was left to
Rowles and Waller to lead the 2005
contingent home just 0.127s apart.
James Fisher (BMW MINI) followed
4.960s back.
It was distinctly wet for the second
race on Sunday afternoon but it was
enlivened by Busby starting from the
back after the race one problems.
He was making steady progress
until tapped into a spin by one of the
Hondas.
Steve Rowles initially took the lead
but then Waller got by before Fisher
took the lead with a lap to run.

From Thoughts Of Being A Vet To
Finishing The Mille Miglia
Alan Greenhalgh
Fancy a different challenge? Try the ‘Mille Miglia’.
What my brother, Robin, and I
thought was a gentleman’s rally
re-creation of the great sports car
race that took place between 1927
and 1957 over a 1000 miles between
Brescia, Rome, Brescia, turned out to
be a balls out four-day dash through
some of Italy’s finest countryside,
national places of interest and
through crowds that I’ve only seen at
Jubilees and Royal weddings.
Stirling Moss set the record in
1955 at 10 hours 7 minutes in a
Mercedes 300SLR. That marque in
the form of the “Gull Wing” was
probably the most numerous on the
event, but we renamed them “Dull
Wings” due to the numbers. In fact
one got ‘written off’ in a head-on
with a BMW road car. I hope his
£million plus car was insured!
works in house, on cars of which
we can only dream. They are Mille
Miglia experts having campaigned
all Jaguar Heritage cars for a
number of years.
The Fantuzzi car wa

scrutineering.
Here we go.
So much for what I thought would
be a few hours’ driving followed by a
long lunch in the open!
We wanted to find what is known as
a ‘Golden Ticket’ car, ie one that had
originally competed in the MM rather
than a MM-eligible car. There are
only 75 - 100 left in the world. This
limited our choice somewhat as they
are worth a fortune. We looked at a
few 750cc models only fit for Italians
with 9” hips, a couple of supposedly
genuine cars for sale by less genuine
people then found an Alfa 1900Ti
raced in 1954 by Metardo Fantuzzi
who built Maserati and Ferrari racing
bodies in his Carroseria.
A deal was done with JD Classics
in Maldon to restore, prepare,
support and enter the car. JD
Classics premises are every petrol
head’s dream workshops. A band of
specialist enthusiasts carry out all

So along comes Thursday May 14th
and we all descend on Brescia, meet
up with the team and find out what we
have to do. All the cars are gathered
in the exhibition centre, where the
scrutineering and vehicle checks are
carried out. The cars and drivers are
then paraded around Brescia like
gladiators to the huge crowds of
enthusiasts. At around 19.30 we left
the start ramp and the accelerator
hit the floor and pretty much stayed
there for seven hours. 438 cars,
support cars and vans, mates in noncompeting super cars and the general
public followed. Anyone that had
a sticker on their car seemed to be
elevated to ‘beyond the law’ status.
Only in Italy would you have police
escort for cars travelling flat out
being encouraged to break every law
in the book with complete disregard
for all other road users. Through red
lights, over white lines we had the
rights of an emergency vehicle in a
hurry. Three-a-breast was standard
four-a-breast common all with oncoming traffic expected to peel out
of the way. Wacky races with millions
of pounds worth of cars on public
roads, through beautiful villages
up and down the mountains, tyres
screeching, drum brakes tested to
the max. Crazy, mad, irresponsible,
gruelling, but a great adventure.
My brother and I finished 196 out
of 438 and so top half. Spectators
were incredible. Out along the road
side all day and night, piazzas full

of enthusiasts and those that just
wanted to be part of the circus that
was passing through their bit of
Italy. Just absolutely amazing and a
huge party atmosphere.
This madness carried on for 16
hours on the Friday, only 13 hours
on the Saturday and six hours on
the Sunday. Approximately 14 hours’
sleep over the three nights. Talk
about the locals getting their pound
of flesh for allowing us to break all
the rules! The publicity and numbers
of people brought in to all the towns
we went through easily paid off.
Would I do it again! Maybe. In
Fantuzzi’s mother-in-law’s car?
Probably not.
It was very funny when we were
behind a red or silver slinky, noisy
two-seater. All the cameras in the
crowd went up, but then were
dropped for us to go past! We felt a
little like the ugly duckling amongst
such exotic machinery but the car
performed faultlessly and was
complimented on by many people.
Almost disbelief that our four- seater
had actually competed 60 years ago
and shared the anniversary with one
of its drivers.
That is the
business
background but
how about the
competition
activities.
‘I started in 1973 in the Triplex and
Britax Saloon car Championships in
a Mini. I then progressed to a Datsun
Cherry and then a Honda Civic. In those
days classes were defined by cost of
car. i.e. Class D up to £999.
After blowing all my money and more
I wasn’t able to save enough to do
racing until nearly a decade later.
In the early 80s I raced a Group A
Golf GTi prepared by Andy Rouse
Engineering and I am pleased to say I
was only 0.2 seconds slower than him
around Donington.
I did the 24hr race at Spa, and
competed at Zolder and Mettet, sharing
the car with Alan Minshaw. We were the
first British car home and 22nd overall
despite a fire during the night.
In the early 90s I campaigned the exSteve Soper Prodrive BMW M3 in the
Belgian Touring Car championships and
had various races in the Golf.
In the early noughties I returned to the
Spa 24hr and the Spa 24hr 2CV 200306 with a best finish of 14th overall
In 2012 I stupidly built a Vauxhall
Firenza for touring car racing when I
had vowed I would never build a race
car myself again. Anyway it continues
to be developed and it works and I am
enjoying it.
I am also sharing a Mini and a TR6 in
CSCC and HSCC.
My wife thinks I am irresponsible going
back to racing, but I keep reminding her
it is cheaper than a mistress. Her
reply is: “only for me”!
Certainly something that will evoke
memories until I’m in my box.

It does not quite have the following
of the Ferraris and Maseratis,
Jaguars etc. But then I don’t have
the budget either.
Alan Greenhalgh is a relative newcomer
to the club, but most certainly not to
the sport.
A 60-year-old company director Alan
is a welcome cheery character in the
paddock racing the bright yellow
Firenza in the Autoglym Pre ’83 Touring
Car Championship.
He is married with three sons, none
involved in motorsport. But Alan has
a serious background in the sport of
which many might not know. He told
Peter Edwards of his background from
potential vet to director of a machine
and factory re-location business, CTC
Europe. You just might have seen
their bright yellow trucks (just like the
Firenza) out and about.
I left school at 17 and started working
at London Zoo because I wanted to be
a vet, but that idea soon petered out.
I moved into business rising to sales
administration manager at 21 and then
decided to steer my career towards my
hobby, motor racing, and so went to
work for a small garage.
After a couple of years I was running
the business for someone and thought
that was pretty stupid so I set up my
own garage business. It was in my
mother’s garage at first. You can
imaging how pleased she was about
that! I then progressed until I had a
large garage in SW London. I did that
for five years or so then sold out. I
started a haulage business that very
soon turned into a machine moving
business because I bought a truck
with a crane on it. And here we are 30
years and more later having survived
all the recessions and provided my
family with a reasonable standard of
living enjoying the occasional extra
marketing activity in the
racing arena’.

wife Caroline.
